Timothy J. Doyle Sr.

ONEONTA — Timothy J. Doyle Sr., 37, of Oneonta died unexpectedly, Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, in Morris.

He was born July 31, 1963, in Utica. He is the son of Robert and Joyce (Birrenkott) Doyle.

Tim graduated from Oneonta High School and attended Mohawk Valley Community College.

He owned and operated Wise Guys Pizza in Oneonta and Colliersville.

He is survived by his parents, Robert and Joyce Doyle of Bella Vista, Ark.; six sons, Timothy J. Doyle Jr. of Rochester, Andrew Hawkins and Cody Doyle of Oneonta, Zachary, Kyle and Tyler Doyle of Garrattsville; his sister and brother-in-law, Anne and Kenneth Buckwheat of Woodstown, N.J.; a niece, Melissa Buckwheat of Woodstown, N.J.; two nephews, Ryan and Colin Buckwheat of Woodstown, N.J.; two aunts, Beverly and Ralph Buechner of Mount Horeb, Wis., and Mrs. Elinor Fredigke of Chicago, Ill.; and several cousins.

There will be a get-together for family and friends on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at 3:30 p.m. at the home of Bonnie Webster, Butternut Ridge, Morris.

Lewis R. Roberts

ONEONTA — Mr. Lewis R. Roberts, 71, of Oneonta, died Wednesday evening, Nov. 29, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Nursing Home.

He was born Dec. 18, 1928, in Middlefield, the fifth son of Reuben DeWitt and Frances Phoebe (Grant) Roberts.

Lewis was a dairy farmer, helping his parents run the family farm. He enjoyed traveling.

He is survived by two half-brothers, Frank Graham of Little Falls and Claude Graham of Cherry Valley; and several nieces and nephews.

Lewis was predeceased by two-half brothers, Alex and John Graham.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht, pastor of the Otego United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the spring at the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Frank E. Bedford

SYRACUSE — Frank E. Bedford, 75, of 7060 N. Manlius Road, Kirkville, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse.

Born in Delhi, he formerly resided in North Syracuse before moving to Kirkville 29 years ago. He retired in 1987, after 31 years with Carrier as a machinist.

He was an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Loie, died in 1992.

Surviving are two sons, Frank Marshall Bedford of Hastings and Jeffery L. Bedford of Syracuse; his companion, Elizabeth Kretchik; three sisters, Ruth O'Dell of Oneonta, Theresa Shaw of Delhi and Dorothy Ogborn of Kirkville; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Delaney & Greabell Funeral Home, 241 Kinne St., East Syracuse. Burial will be in the spring at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery in Oneonta. Calling hours will be Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made to the SPCA, 5878 E. Molly Road, Mattydale, N.Y. 13211.

James H. Constable

GREENE — James H. "Jim" Constable, 91, of Greene and formerly of Oneonta, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton.

He was predeceased by his parents, Archie and Lucy Constable; brother, Max; sisters, Alta McCaffrey and Anne Budine; son-in-law, William J. Davis.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Constable, Greene; daughters, Jane Devereaux, Walla Walla, Wash., and Roberta Davis, Greene; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He graduated from Walton High School in the Class of 1927, after which he worked in the Walton Bank for two years. He then attended and graduated from Cornell University with a degree in floraculture and horticulture.

He married Mary Scott on April 8, 1933.

He was superintendent of grounds at Homer Folks Tuberculosis Hospital in Oneonta for 11 years.

Jim and Mary purchased Reynolds Greenhouse in Oneonta in 1946, and operated it until 1972. He then became superintendent of Oneonta Plains Cemetery for 18 years, until his retirement at the age of 81.

He was an active 60-year member of the Elm Park United Methodist Church in Oneonta, where he held many offices. He was a 50-year member of the Oneonta Masonic Lodge. He was a member of Queen May Court of the Amaranth, Binghamton. He was a Boy Scout leader in Oneonta. He visited many botanical gardens in the United States and in Canada.

Funeral and committal services will be held today at 3:30 p.m. at the Root Funeral Home, 23 N. Chenango St., Greene, with the Rev. David A. Rockwell, pastor of Nimmonsburg United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the Elm Park United Methodist Church, Chestnut Street, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Milton R. Simonds

BAINBRIDGE — Milton R. Simonds, 97, of Bainbridge, passed away Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.

He was born Sept. 15, 1903, the son of the late Romane and Ada May Miles Simonds in Norwood.

Mr. Simonds married Mabel Holman on March 23, 1923, in Adams. She predeceased him on Feb. 28, 2000, after 76 years of marriage. They moved to Bainbridge in 1924, and lived in their first house for 72 years.

Mr. Simonds was a chemist for the Bordens Chemical Co., when he retired after 45 years.

He was honored as the Man of the Years in 1970, in Bainbridge. He was a member of the Bainbridge Fire Department for 17 years and was the assistant fire chief. He was the assistant director of civil defense. Mr. Simonds was a member of the Bainbridge Rotary Club, the Bainbridge Sportsman Association and the Chenango County Sportsman Association, as well as a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, having been a vestryman and warden. He was the past chairman of the Bainbridge Planning Board. Mr. Simonds served as a village of Bainbridge trustee for 10 years and was the mayor from 1952-54 and 1956-60.

He is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Milton and Dorothy Simonds Jr., North Fenton, Norman and Joan Simonds, Bainbridge, Benjamin and Peg Simonds, Bainbridge and James R. Simonds, Bainbridge; one sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Robert Nordman, Michigan; 21 grandchildren; a lot of great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, June Simonds, Bainbridge.

He is also predeceased by two sons, Charles and Donald Simonds. and two brothers, Ansil and Benjamin Simonds.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Bainbridge, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Linda King Watkins, vicar, officiating.

Friends may call at their convenience on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Burial will be in St. Peter's Episcopal Cemetery, Bainbridge.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter's Episcopal Church or the Bainbridge Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Margaret Smith

GREENE — Margaret (Badger) Smith, 77, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at her home.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Smith Sr., one sister and four brothers.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Jr. and Debbie Smith of Unadilla and Richard and Dawn Smith of Vernon; two daughters and sons-in-law, Harvey and Linda Stalker of Greene and David and Debra Neumann of Wadena, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Ida Henninge of Corporus Cristi,  Texas; two sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

To respect her wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral.

A graveside memorial service will be announced in the spring by the Root Funeral Home, 23 N. Chenango St., Greene.

Those wishing may make memorial contributions to Catskill Area Hospice of Oneonta, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Freda B. Townsend

SIDNEY — Freda B. Townsend, 90, of Sidney, passed on to peace after a long and courageous battle on Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

She was born Feb. 7, 1910, in Sidney Center, the daughter of Herbert H. and Lula Anderson Laraway.

Mrs. Townsend attended school in Sidney Center and Stamford.

She was employed in Alps Sweet Shop and E.C.D. of Bendix, Sidney during World War II.

She married Robert Townsend on Oct. 3, 1942. He predeceased her on Nov. 24, 1982.

Mrs. Townsend enjoyed knitting, crocheting and was an excellent cook and homemaker.

She is survived by her daughter, Leatrice C. Gregory, Sidney; three grandchildren, Allen and Sue Gregory, Sidney, Kevin and Beatrice Gregory, Hillsborough, N.C., and Amy and William Ryan, Loudonville; six great-grandchildren, Aaron, Jennifer and Kellie Gregory, N.C., Heather Gregory, Delhi, Erin Gregory, Sidney, Gregory Marshall, Loudonville; one sister, Charlotte McMullen, West Davenport; and several nieces and nephews.

At her request there will be no calling hours. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Evan R. Williams Jr.

STAMFORD — Evan R. Williams Jr., 76, of Robinson Terrace, Stamford, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 13, 1924, in Ilion, the son of Evan R. and Ina (Holt) Williams Sr.

Evan was married to Nellie Osborne on Aug. 25, 1946. Nellie died Aug. 15, 1998.

Evan was a manager for several food chains, both in New York and Florida, and for several years owned and operated the William's Superette in Edmeston.

Prior to his retirement, he was a security guard for Tindall Air Force Base in Panama City, Fla.

In 1989, Evan and his wife moved to Stamford from Port St. Joe, Fla., and on May 19, 1993, became a resident of Robinson Terrace, where he worked on the reception desk for several years.

He was a member of the Stamford Baptist Church, and was a member of and instrumental in the forming of the Port St. Joe Fire Department in Florida.

Evan is survived by daughters and son-in-law, Gail and Robert Prichard of Stamford, Donna Williams and Dawn Butler of Lynn Haven, Fla., and Cindy Kosier of Port St. Joe, Fla.; grandchildren, Rick, Wendy, Melissa, Paula, Michael, Jamie, Joe, Chris and Russ; great-grandchildren, Anthony, Patience, Molly Beth, Jordan Thomas and Devon Marie; a sister, Mary Williams of Ilion; a brother, Walt Williams of San Antonio,  Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services and a reception to follow will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Stamford Baptist Church, with the Rev. Waylen Bray, pastor, officiating. The burial will be at a later date in the Edmeston Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 W. Main St., Stamford, at their convenience Tuesday afternoon and evening. The family will be in attendance between 2 and 4 and 7 and 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Evan's memory to either the Stamford Baptist Church, Lake Street, Stamford, N.Y. 12167 or to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford-Grand Gorge.

Shirley Green

WESTFORD — Shirley Green, 84, passed away, Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

He was born May 18, 1916, in Maryland, the son of Ernest and Ione (Chamberlin) Green.

He was a graduate of Schenevus High School, Class of 1935.

He married Margaret Kennedy on Aug. 6, 1939, in Oneonta.

Always a man of the land, he started his farming career with his uncle, Ray Green. In 1946, he and Margaret bought the Patrick farm and began a successful dairy farming business to be joined later in partnership by his son, Timothy, and wife, Barbara.

Shirley was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. These close family ties will always be cherished by his loved ones.

He was a very inspirational agricultural and community leader for many years. With the loyal support of his wife, Margaret, his community services included: a Draper Central School Board member for 28 years; a justice of the peace for the town of Westford; a committeeman for GLF, later Agway; an Agway director for 18 years, from 1967 to 1985; he served as a committeeman for the  Texas City Refining Co.; a member and past president of the Schenevus Rotary; and a member of the Schenevus Valley Masonic Lodge No. 592.

In 1937, Shirley served as the youngest master of the oldest Grange in Otsego County, the Elk Creek Grange. He was also a trustee, secretary-treasurer of the Elk Creek Cemetery Association; a member and past president of Otsego County Farm Bureau; a member of the Westford United Methodist Church; a member and past chairman of Otsego County ASCS Committee and in 1963, took part in the People to People Goodwill Delegation to Russia, England, Germany and Poland.

Shirley is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Margaret; son and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Barbara Green; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Robert Milavec; grandchildren, Kristin (Ronald) Spranger, Kimberly Green-Phillips, Kelly Green, Timothy Green II, Lauren (Gregg) Milavec-Horhota and Jeffrey (Leisa) Milavec.

Also surviving are David and Cathy Craig, Ellen and Nelson Giron, Tom and Melanie Craig, Karyn Craig, Melissa Marling and Barry Rucker; a brother, Wendall Barnard of Norwich; and many cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents; grandchildren, Kathryn Lynn Green and Kevin Michael Green; and stepmother, Mabel Green.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus. There will be a Masonic service at 8:30 p.m.

The funeral service will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, officiating.

Burial will follow at the Elk Creek Cemetery, Elk Creek.

In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Westford First Responders, P.O. Box 187, Westford, N.Y. 13488, Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155 or the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Clyde A. Beckley

UNADILLA — Clyde A. Beckley, 77, of Sowles Road, Unadilla, and formerly of Otego, passed away Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at The Meadows, Cooperstown.

He was born Dec. 12, 1922, in Otego, the son of the late Lyle and Elizabeth (Foster) Beckley.

He was married to Doris Robinson on Nov. 1, 1947, in Walton.

Clyde was born and lived most all his life on a dairy farm on Mill Creek Road, Otego, until September 1995, when the farm was sold and he moved to Sowles Road, Unadilla.

He had been a patient at The Meadows since August 1997.

He was a graduate of Otego Central School, served as Otego town justice from 1952-1979, was a 50-year member and past master of the Otego Susquehanna Grange, a member of the New York State Holstein Breeders Association, a member of the NRA and a 50-year member of the Otego United Methodist Church, until recently transferring to the Sand Hill United Methodist Church.

Clyde is survived by his wife, Doris Beckley of Unadilla; three daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Jack Myers of Valatie, Linda and Claudio Mastroianni of Schenectady and Sally and David Smith of Blairstown, N.J.; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Susan Beckley of Cooperstown; his grandchildren, Heather Myers Blakely of Hurley, Barbie Beckley of Milford, Brenda Beckley of Cooperstown and Alex Mastroianni of Schenectady; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Beckley of Otego and Jessie Beckley of Penn Yan; a niece, Martha Leverock of Wells Bridge; and five nephews, Carl Beckley of Otego, David Beckley of Portlandville, Philip Beckley of Geneva, Dewey Robinson of Rumford, Maine, and Dale Robinson of Flat Rock, N.C.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Lynn, George and Glenn Beckley.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla, with the Rev. Norman R. Tiffany, pastor of the Sand Hill United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in the spring in Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, from 5 to 8 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sand Hill United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, care of Ruth Searles, 222 Sand Hill Road, Unadilla, N.Y. 13849.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Edna Shoemaker

SCHENECTADY — Mrs. Edna M. Shoemaker (Banks), 91, of Schenectady, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at the Glendale Nursing Home.

She was born June 5, 1909, in  Jefferson, to the late Marvin Banks and the late Anna Scott Banks.

She was employed by  White Sulphur Spring in the housekeeping department in Sharon Springs for many years.

She married Clifford Shoemaker, who predeceased her on April 11, 1994.

She was a former member of the Dutch Reformed Church in Sharon Springs.

She is survived by her children, Clifford Shoemaker of Mosheim, Tenn., Raymond Shoemaker of Delanson, Richard Shoemaker of West Berne, Rosella Jeffers of Middleburgh, Dorothy Weatherford of Schenectady, Betty Shaffer of Howes Cave and Jayce Ouellette of Cobleskill; siblings, Laura Buell of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Goldia Banks of Conesville, Marietta Banks of Stanford; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her siblings, Louis Banks, Chancey Banks, Charles Banks and Evelyn Wilday.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at the Bond Funeral Home, Schenectady, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be held Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Bond Funeral Home, Broadway and Guilderland Avenue, Schenectady, N.Y. 12306, with the Rev. Jan Hoffman of Scotia Reformed Church officiating.

Interment will be held in the Evergreen Memorial Park, Colonie.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Capital District Chapter, 85 Watervielt Ave., Albany, N.Y. 12206.

Arrangements are by the Bond Funeral Home, Broadway and Guilderland Avenue, Schenectady, N.Y. 12306.
