Margarethe Hewitt

NORWICH — Margarethe Evelyn Hewitt, 88, longtime resident of Elm Street, passed away Friday afternoon, Dec. 1, 2000, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital of Norwich.

Born on Feb. 16, 1912, in Detroit, Mich., Margarethe was the daughter of Herman R. and Martha P. (LaBuschewsky) Fischer.

She received her education in the Detroit school system and was married to John Stuart Hewitt in Detroit on June 27, 1936. In 1946, Margarethe and John moved to Norwich, where John took employment with the Norwich Pharmacal Co. as head of the Pill and Tablet Manufacturing Department.

Margarethe became actively involved in the community, where she taught craft classes, became a leader of the pre-teen Girl Scouts and participated in the PTA. She also enjoyed giving time to such projects as the Migrant Workers Housing Program and Chenango Memorial Hospital's auxiliary program, the Pink Door.

A longtime member of the Christ Lutheran Church, Margarethe was an active participant in the Lutheran Church Women, had served on the church council and was actively involved in other church activities such as the suppers and funeral luncheons.

Margarethe is survived by her children, the Rev. Martin A. Hewitt of Spokane, Wash., Joan H. Mushtare of Unadilla and Kathleen M. Hewitt of San Ramon,  Calif.; by six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and by her sisters, Charlotte A. Davis of Detroit and Esther V. and Reginald Dryden of Detroit.

Margarethe was predeceased by her husband, John Hewitt, on Sept. 19, 1989; and by her brother, Edward Fischer. Margarethe's sister, Elenora Fischer, passed away on Dec. 3, 2000.

Funeral services for Margarethe will be held on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at 3 p.m. from the Christ Lutheran Church of Norwich, with the Rev. Jean Vargo presiding. Interment will be in the Glen Eden Cemetery of Livonia, Mich. Friends are invited to call at the Lutheran Church from noon until the service.

Memorial contributions may be made in Margarethe's memory to the Christ Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 94 North Broad St., Norwich.

Arrangements are by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, Norwich.

Katherine L. Wood

NEW BERLIN — Katherine L. Wood, 91, of New Berlin, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at the Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin.

She was born June 15, 1909, in Pittsfield, the daughter of Glenn and Anna (Prisco) Moore.

She married Floyd C. Wood on June 23, 1928, in Montrose, Pa.; they were married for 55 years. He predeceased her Jan. 2, 1983.

She is survived by one daughter, Mary L. Sutton of New Berlin; one son, Richard G. Wood of Hartford, Ky.; 12 grandchildren, Susan Strait, Pat Davis, Deanne Ray, Ike Wilcox Jr., Mike Wilcox, Randy Wilcox, Kathy Schmitt, Sharon Miles, Debbie Tilbe, Rick Wood, Tom Wood and John Wood; several great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one daughter, Lena Ann Wilcox.

She was a homemaker most of her life, working at the Coates-Variety Store for just a few years.

She was a member of the I.O.O.F. and Victory Rebekah #426 in South New Berlin and the New Berlin Women's Bowling Association, holding many offices.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at 1:30 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Beverly Butler of the First United Methodist Church, New Berlin, officiating.

Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

Calling hours will be held before the service from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the Chase Memorial Nursing Home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

George Pittet

SIDNEY — George Pittet, 72, of Sidney, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born Feb. 18, 1928, the son of the late Louie and Madelyn Favreau Pittet in Holyoke, Mass.

George served his country in the United States Navy.

He married Effie York in September 1948 in Sidney.

George was employed as toolmaker for E.C.D. of Bendix, Sidney, and he retired after 42 years.

He is survived by his wife, Effie Pittet of Sidney; two daughters, Paula Pabst of Sidney and Christine Steele of Sidney; brother, Marcel "Louie" Pittet of Fort Myers and Florida; two granddaughters, Shelly Finch of Unadilla and Jamie Barton of Watertown; two great-grandchildren, Andrew James Finch and Katie Marie Finch.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad or the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Don Strobel

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Don Strobel of Las Vegas, Nev., died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000.

He was born Feb. 17, 1941, son of Byron and Florence Strobel.

Don is survived by stepfather, Maurice Wilber of Morris; children, Cristin Shepler, Dana Strobel and Whitney Parker of Norwich; brothers, Sarg Strobel of Norwich, David Wilber of Oneonta and Terry Wilber of Unadilla; and sister, Susan Fountas of Florida.

Don graduated from Morris Central School, where he was an outstanding basketball player.

Don was a veteran of the United States Air Force.

He loved camping and traveling to various places in New York.

Don was an active member of the Elk's Lodge #2353.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.

John Green

WEST BAINBRIDGE — A memorial service for John Green, who passed away Nov. 26, 2000, will be held at the West Bainbridge Baptist Church on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at 2 p.m. Friends and relatives are cordially invited.

Shirley Green

WESTFORD — Shirley Green, 84, passed away, Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

He was born May 18, 1916, in Maryland, the son of Ernest and Ione (Chamberlin) Green.

He was a graduate of Schenevus High School, Class of 1935.

He married Margaret Kennedy on Aug. 6, 1939, in Oneonta.

Always a man of the land, he started his farming career with his uncle, Ray Green. In 1946, he and Margaret bought the Patrick farm and began a successful dairy farming business to be joined later in partnership by his son, Timothy, and wife, Barbara.

Shirley was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. These close family ties will always be cherished by his loved ones.

He was a very inspirational agricultural and community leader for many years. With the loyal support of his wife, Margaret, his community services included: a Draper Central School Board member for 28 years; a justice of the peace for the town of Westford; a committeeman for GLF, later Agway; an Agway director for 18 years, from 1967 to 1985; he served as a committeeman for the  Texas City Refining Co.; a member and past president of the Schenevus Rotary; and a member of the Schenevus Valley Masonic Lodge No. 592.

In 1937, Shirley served as the youngest master of the oldest Grange in Otsego County, the Elk Creek Grange. He was also a trustee, secretary-treasurer of the Elk Creek Cemetery Association; a member and past president of Otsego County Farm Bureau; a member of the Westford United Methodist Church; a member and past chairman of Otsego County ASCS Committee; and in 1963, took part in the People to People Goodwill Delegation to Russia, England, Germany and Poland.

Shirley is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Margaret; son and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Barbara Green; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Robert Milavec; grandchildren, Kristin (Ronald) Spranger, Kimberly Green-Phillips, Kelly Green, Timothy Green II, Lauren (Gregg) Milavec-Horhota and Jeffrey (Leisa) Milavec; and great-granddaughter,  Taylor Spranger.

Also surviving are David and Cathy Craig, Ellen and Nelson Giron, Tom and Melanie Craig, Karyn Craig, Melissa Marling and Barry Rucker; a brother, Wendall Barnard of Norwich; and many cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents; grandchildren, Kathryn Lynn Green and Kevin Michael Green; and stepmother, Mabel Green.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus. There will be a Masonic service at 8:30 p.m.

The funeral service will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, officiating.

Burial will follow at the Elk Creek Cemetery, Elk Creek.

In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Westford First Responders, P.O. Box 187, Westford, N.Y. 13488, Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155 or the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Ernest Spencer

ANDES — Ernest Spencer, 64, of Andes, died unexpectedly at home on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000.

Ernie was born June 4, 1936, in Walton, the son of Pearl Spencer.

He married Marcia Brisbane in October 1964 in  Pennsylvania; she survives.

Ernie was a heavy equipment operator for the town of Andes for 28 years.

He was a member of AARP and enjoyed baby-sitting his grandchildren.

In addition to Marcia, he is survived by a son, Ernest E. of Andes; two daughters, Connie Spencer and Richard Peck of Andes and Donna Spencer and Ken Weaver of Andes; four granddaughters, Meghan and Marissa Peck and Cheyenne and Laurynn Weaver; a brother, Francis Spencer of Walton; and a sister, Beverly Walker of Camden. Also surviving are four sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at 11 a.m. at Jester & Stanley Funeral Home, Andes, with the Rev. Daniel McCollister officiating. Burial will be in Shavertown Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday at their convenience; the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Margaret M. Buell

WILLOW GROVE, Pa. — Margaret M. Buell, 84, of Willow Grove, died at her home Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, after a four month illness.

Both her career and service focused on the needs of others. Before her retirement, Mrs. Buell served as director of nursing at Germantown Hospital from 1966 until 1981.

Mrs. Buell, daughter of Fred and Eleanor Potter, was born July 17, 1916, in Franklin, N.Y. From the time she was a little girl, she knew she wanted to be a nurse and worked at a summer boarding home to earn money for her education.

She was committed to nursing and served faithfully for 38 years.

After graduation from Syracuse Memorial Hospital in 1938 with a diploma in nursing, she served as a head nurse in the pediatric department of Syracuse Memorial Hospital, night supervisor at the City Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y., and head nurse and supervisor at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, N.Y.

In 1941, she was married to Andrew L. Buell, who was killed in 1945 during the Battle of the Bulge; at the time, their daughter, Audrey, was 21/2 years old.

Mrs. Buell was offered a position in 1946 at Norton Memorial Infirmary in Louisville, Ky., as the assistant directory of nursing.

In 1950, she accepted a position as associate director of nursing at McKeesport Hospital in  Pennsylvania, and in 1957, she became director of nursing at McKeesport Hospital, a position which she held until she went to Germantown Hospital.

Mrs. Buell continued her education, while working, and received her bachelor's of science degree from Columbia University Teachers College in 1950 and master's of letters in nursing administration from the University of Pittsburgh in 1955.

She was active for more than 30 years in the Altrusa Clubs of McKeesport, Pa., and Philadelphia, Pa., serving at both the local and district levels to improve the quality of life for women and children.

After her retirement, Mrs. Buell served as a volunteer nurse with the Red Cross Blood Mobile and delivered Meals on Wheels in the Hatboro area.

Mrs. Buell became a member of the First Lay Ministry Team at Lehman Memorial United Methodist Church in Hatboro and ministered to church members who had lost their spouses. She was active in the United Methodist Women and served on numerous committees and commissions in the church.

She was also a member of the Walk To Emmaus of the Eastern  Pennsylvania Conference.

During the past year, Mrs. Buell's health did not permit her to be as active in her church as she would have liked, but she continued to serve as a prayer warrior, praying for those who were ill, had lost loved ones or had special needs.

In addition to her daughter, Audrey Buell; she is survived by a niece, Eleanor Funk of Maugansville, Md.; and nephews, Donald Potter, Franklin, N.Y., George Potter, Norwich, N.Y., Gary Potter, Beaumont,  Texas, Stuart Potter, Endicott, N.Y., and David Walrath and Charles Walrath, DeFuniak Springs, Fla.; and their spouses, children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Dwight, James and Stuart Potter Sr.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at noon at Lehman Memorial United Methodist Church, 300 South York Road, Hatboro, Pa. Friends will be received before the service from 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and are invited to a buffet luncheon in the church's Fellowship Hall after the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lehman Memorial United Methodist Church in Mrs. Buell's memory.

Helen S. Protzman

COOPERSTOWN — Helen Sango Protzman, 78, of Glen Avenue, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000.

She was born July 24, 1922, in West Winfield, to George and Mary Karaparo Sango.

She graduated from West Winfield High School and Bellevue School of Nursing and practiced as a registered nurse.

In June 1946, she married David Coates Protzman, and the couple moved to Brooklyn. Later they made their home in Jamaica and then moved to Cooperstown in 1968. There they owned and operated the Glensango Nursing Home for more than 25 years.

She is survived by her husband, David of Cooperstown; her son, Robin N. Protzman of Cooperstown; a sister, Katherine A. Katzeral of West Winfield; four grandchildren, Thomas L. Pavlot Jr., Delvena Rogers and her husband, Robert, Parker and Blake Protzman; three great-granddaughters,  Taylor and Morgan Royce-Pavlot and Olivia Rogers; three sisters-in-law, Nancy Sango of Clinton, Marie Sango of Utica and Ruth Sango of Massachusetts; several nieces and nephews; and a longtime special friend, Nancy Stalter.

She is predeceased by her daughter, Diane Pavlot and three brothers, George, Joseph and Nicholas Sango.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, West Main Street, West Winfield.

There will be no public calling hours and the burial will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to American Diabetes Association, 356 N. Midler Ave., Syracuse, N.Y. 13206 or Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, 507 Kent St., Utica, N.Y. 13599-1140.

Katherine Garlock

NEWPORT — Miss Katherine M. Garlock, 89, of Newport, and formerly of Oneonta, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at the Little Falls Hospital.

Born in Garrattsville on March 23, 1911, Katherine was a daughter of the late William and Ivah  Jackson Garlock.

She graduated from Morris High School and furthered her education at Morrisville College, from where she received her licensed practical nursing certification.

For 22 years, Katherine served as a nurse at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, from where she retired.

She was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church as well as the Retired L.P.N. Association, both of Oneonta.

Miss Garlock was a 13-year resident of Garden View Manor in Otego before moving to Valley Health Services in Herkimer one year ago.

Survivors include two nephews and their wives, Elbert and Helen Garlock and Douglas and Marie Garlock, all of Newport; one sister-in-law, Lucille Garlock of Skaneateles; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was predeceased by her two brothers, Carl and Elbert Garlock Sr.

Funeral services will be held at the Autenrith Funeral Home, Newport, on Saturday at 3 p.m., with the Rev. William H. Stubba, pastor of the Cold Brook United Methodist Church, officiating.

Spring interment will take place in the Newport Cemetery.

Calling hours at the funeral home will be one hour before the funeral on Saturday from 2 to 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please consider memorials to the Butternut Valley Cemetery Association, care of Ruth Miller, Garrattsville, N.Y. 13342.
