Ethel H. Culbert

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Ethel H. Culbert, 83, of 23 Park St., died on Monday morning, Dec. 12, 2000, in Folts Homes, Herkimer.

A daughter of Wayne Harvey and Lillian Mutchler Hadcox, she was born on July 12, 1917, in Little Falls. A lifelong area resident, she was educated in Richfield Springs, graduating high school with the Class of 1934.

She had worked as a waitress in many of the Richfield Springs restaurants and for 23 years was employed as a bank teller with the State Bank of Albany. She retired in 1983 as the head teller.

She married Pulaski B. Culbert on June 20, 1942, in Christ Church, Herkimer. It was a devoted union of 34 years until his passing on Dec. 7, 1976.

She was a member of St. John's Church, Richfield Springs, and had served on the altar guild. She was a 58-year member of the Richfield Springs American Legion Auxiliary.

Ethel was gifted with many talents. Having a good perspective for tunes, she was a self-taught pianist. She enjoyed nature, especially birds and flowers and painting with watercolors.

Surviving are three sons and their wives, Charles F. "Fred" and Maureen Culbert of East Springfield, James P. and Phyllis Culbert of Midlothian, Va., and John E. C. and Paulette Culbert of Williamsburg, Va.; eight grandchildren, James Culbert, Christine Wright, Michael Culbert, Heather Culbert, Katherine Pawlak, David, Megan and Michelle Culbert; a sister, Lillian Young of Little Falls; and two nephews.

Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Hadcox.

There are no calling hours.

A reading of the burial office and celebration of Holy Communion from the Book of Common Prayer will take place on Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at 11 a.m. in St. John's Episcopal Church, Richfield Springs. The Rev. John Dixon Bartle, rector, will officiate.

Burial will take place next spring in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs.

Memorial donations may be made to the Richfield Springs Volunteer Ambulance Squad. Envelopes will be available at the church.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs.

Helen Schultz

OXFORD — Helen Schultz, 90, of Sidney, N.Y., and formerly of Bainbridge, N.Y., passed away Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at the NYS Veterans Home, Oxford, N.Y.

She was born April 8, 1910, the daughter of the late Ernest and Eva Toles Dana, in Cobleskill, N.Y.

Helen served her country in the United States Army, from 1942 to 1946, serving two years in England with the 52nd Division. She achieved the rank of captain.

She married Frederick R. Schultz on May 4, 1950, in Lake Placid, N.Y. He predeceased her on Oct. 20, 1984.

Mrs. Schultz was employed as a registered nurse at Syracuse Memorial Hospital and Will Rogers Hospital, Saranac Lake, N.Y., before retiring in 1976. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church, Syracuse.

Mrs. Schultz is survived by three nephews, Gary, Keith and Phillip Darling; three nieces, Susan Kreck, Marie Dana and Anne Gianetto; a brother, Floyd Dana, of Oneonta; her good friend of several years, Ronita Halbert of Sidney; and several great nieces, nephews and cousins. A sister, Marietta Darling, also predeceased her.

Upon Mrs. Schultz's request, there will be no services.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge.

Memorial contributions may be made the Sidney Emergency Squad. Funeral arrangements are being handled by C.H. Landers Inc. Sidney, N.Y.

Ronald Kacerosky

JEFFERSON — Ronald Kacerosky, 71, of  Jefferson, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta,

He was born Sept. 2, 1929, in New York City, the son of Edward and Anna (Kolhepp) Kacerosky.

He was raised in Bronx, N.Y. He settled in Westchester County, where be met his wife Lena McGugan, who survives.

A licensed refrigeration and air conditioning technician, he was employed at Rockefeller Center for 18 years. He then owned his own bowling alley in New Rochelle, N.Y.

He also worked as a chief engineer at Abbott House Group Home in Irvington, N.Y., for 10 years. He retired from there and continued to work, owning his own taxi service in Irvington for three years. Closing his business, he and his family moved to  Jefferson, N.Y., to fully enjoy his retirement.

His interests were his family, science-fiction movies, coin collecting and crossword puzzles.

Besides his caring wife; he is survived by two daughters, Donna Kacerosky of Davenport and Margaret Garrison of  Jefferson; and two granddaughters, Jessica and Brittany.

Private memorial services will be held at a later time.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Ottman Funeral Home of Cherry Valley.

Evelyn Edwards

CHERRY VALLEY — Evelyn Simmons Cole Edwards, 76, of Troy, formerly of Daytona, Fla., passed away Dec. 9, 2000, in Troy.

She was born Dec. 12, 1923, in Pleasant Brook, N.Y., the daughter of the late Harold and Dora (Countryman) Simmons.

Mrs. Edwards was raised in the Cherry Valley area and was a Cherry Valley Central School graduate of the Class of 1941.

She is survived by her son, Harold "Ike" Cole and his wife, Fay, of Richfield Springs, N.Y.; three daughters, Sharon Harrington of Cherry Valley, Donna Rich and her husband, John, of Ballston Lake, Tammy Flint and her husband, Keith, of Glenn Falls; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Raymond Cole, Jr.; her second husband, Raymond Edwards; and brothers, Howard and Leland Simmons.

Cremation will take place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley.

A Christian burial will take place in the spring in the Canajoharie Falls Cemetery, Canajoharie, N.Y., with the Rev. John Bartle of St. John's Episcopal Church, Richfield Springs, officiating.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home of Cherry Valley.

Elizabeth S. Signor

ONEONTA — Elizabeth S. Signor, age 72, died on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at A.0. Fox Memorial Hospital, after a lifelong struggle with rheumatoid arthritis.

Elizabeth (Bette) was born on Aug. 31, 1928, in Carbondale, Pa., the daughter of Joseph T. Syron and Helen (Mannion) Syron-Bellew.

She moved to Oneonta when she was 16 years-old and graduated from Oneonta High School in 1946.

She began a banking career that same year when she was hired by Citizens National Bank as a teller. She continued to work as the bank merged with National Commercial Bank and later Key Bank, N.A. She retired on disability in 1976 as head bookkeeper.

She married Joseph L. Signor at St. Mary's Church in 1950.

She was a member of St. Mary's Parish and a member of the Rosary Society.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph; a daughter and son-in-law, Catherine (Kitty) and Barry Townsend; two grandchildren, Scott and Rebecca Townsend, all of Oneonta; six brothers and sisters, Joseph and Joan Syron and Robert and Judy Syron, of Schenectady, James and Rita Syron, of Binghamton, Barbara and Paul Lambert, of Cooperstown, Michael and Karen Syron, of Oneonta and Mary Ellen and Frank Antonucci, of  Washingtonville. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Jane Wetmore, of Oneonta and Mary Klubko, of Bakersfield,  Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Joanne Signor Braman.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta.

Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made in Bette's name to the Arthritis Foundation or St. Mary's School Building Fund, 38 Walnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are provided by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Arthur C. Johnson

PINE HILL — Arthur C. Johnson, 89, of Pine Hill, N.Y., died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville, after a long illness.

He was born Sept. 7, 1911, in Jersey City, N.J.

Arthur married Edith C. Post on Jan 30, 1965, at Hacksensack, N.J.

He owned and operated Silver Stone Sport Supplies in Pine Hill, moving there in 1979 from Oak Ridge, N.J.

Arthur is survived by his wife, Edith, of Pine Hill; four nieces and two nephews.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at a later date. Burial will be private.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Nancy A. Searles

FORT PLAIN — Mrs. Nancy A. Searles, 64, of Old Fort Plain Road, Fort Plain, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, after a long illness.

She was born on Sept. 10, 1936, in Cooperstown, to Fred J. and Ida (Miller) Yager.

Mrs. Searles was educated in Cooperstown schools and was a nurse's aide at Arkell Hall in Canajoharie for 10 years, retiring in January of this year.

She was a 25-year resident of Fort Plain and previously resided in Hartwick.

Mrs. Searles was of the Baptist faith.

She was married to Donald G. Searles, who died earlier this year. Nancy was also predeceased by her first husband, Robert D. Bard, in 1990; two brothers, Fred Yager Jr. and Wesley John Yager; and three sisters, Josephine Graham, Ella L. Darrow and Grace E. Butler.

She is survived by her husband, Donald G. Searles; two sons, Robert C. Bard of West Winfield and Larry A. Bard of Hartwick; two brothers, Melvin E. Yager of Cooperstown and Steven D. Yager of Richfield Springs; four sisters, Virginia Fort of Hartwick, Frances Thayer of Mohawk, Dayle Chandler of Little Falls and Rose A. Pink of Cooperstown; two grandchildren, Alan R. Bard and Aaron M. Bard; a special niece, Darlene T. Pink; two special great-nephews, Matthew Burton and Andrew Burton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 14, at Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain, with the Rev. Judith Pratt of the Federated Church of West Winfield, officiating.

Burial will be in Canajoharie Falls Cemetery.

Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 13, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Edward F. Hunter

STAMFORD — Edward F. Hunter, 54, of Stamford, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at home.

He was born July 22, 1946, in Eddington, Pa., the son of Edward F. and Dorothy (Sottung) Hunter.

He had made his home in the Stamford area for the past 30 years.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Jones, of Stamford; his mother, Dorothy Hunter of  Pennsylvania; two sisters, Edie and Alan Mather and Eleanor Terneson of  Pennsylvania; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

His father, Edward F. Hunter, and a brother, Richard Hunter, predeceased him.

Mr. Hunter was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as a corporal specialist in the Vietnam conflict in Thailand from December 1965 until December 1967.

He was a 15-year independent owner/operator of a tractor-trailer.

He had a love of the outdoors and all animals and enjoyed many sports, including fishing, tennis and football.

Funeral services will take place on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, N.Y., at 11 a.m. with Pastor Elliot Oakes officiating.

Calling hours will be Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, and the family will be in attendance from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Grand Gorge, N.Y., after the service.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the R.A. Robinson Rescue Squad, Stamford, N.Y. 12167.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, N.Y.

Frederick Huneke

FAIR LAWN, N. J. — Frederick J. Huneke, 89, a resident of Fair Lawn, N.J., for 50 years, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at Valley Hospital, Ridgewood, N.J.

He was born in New York, N.Y.

A graduate of Harvard Business School, he was a sales manager for Kraft Foods Inc., Mountainside, N.J., for 40 years, retiring in 1976.

He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Fair Lawn, N.J.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian (nee Geschwinder) Huneke at home; two sons, Frederick W. Huneke of Delhi and Paul Huneke of Tinton Falls, N.J.; a sister, Eva Browne of Cranford, N.J.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Friday, at 10 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Fair Lawn, N.J.

Burial will be in George  Washington Memorial Park, Paramus, N.J.

Calling hours will be Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Vander Plaat Colonial Home Inc., 13-31 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn, N.J.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Memorial Fund, 22-15 Broadway, Fair Lawn, N.J. 07410.
