Anthony Simonelli

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — We celebrate the return of light during this season, yet the days before the solstice are the darkest of the year. This year will be particularly dark, since the light that is Anthony Simonelli went out on Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at 7:15 p.m. in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Anthony was born in New York City on Jan. 19, 1915, and was the youngest and last surviving of seven brothers and sisters.

A lifetime resident of New York, he relocated to North Carolina with his daughter in 1999. He was an attorney for the city of New York until 1965.

Following retirement, he spent his life trying to help those he loved in any way he could.

He is survived by his children, Jeanne and Richard, and his grandchildren, Elanor, August and Rachel. During this year, he spent many happy hours visiting with each of them in North Carolina and New York.

His final illness was blessedly short. This last journey reunites him with his wife, Marie Di Meglio, to whom he was married for 57 years. We will certainly miss him, but he was at peace in the end.

We hope that those who knew him will remember him fondly, and drink a toast to his long life: Basta!
