William A. Rickert

DELHI — Mr. William A. Rickert, 91, of the Country Side Nursing Home and formerly of Grand Gorge, died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at the nursing home.

Mr. Rickert was born in New York City on June 5, 1909, a son of Joseph and Helen  Schmidt Rickert. He was a retired retail hardware salesman.

Surviving Mr. Rickert is a sister: Edna DelaMotte of Whiting, N.J.

There are no calling hours or funeral services.

Cremation will take place at the Vale Crematory, Schenectady, and burial of ashes will be in Fair View Cemetery, Grand Gorge.

Arrangements are by the Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, a Golden Rule Funeral Home, 63 River St., Middleburgh.

John H. Stiegert

John H. Stiegert, 67, of Liverpool and formerly of Otego, died Friday evening, Dec. 22, 2000, at Crouse Irving Medical Center, Syracuse.

He was born July 27, 1933, in Staten Island, the son of John Leopold and Emily (Zelaski) Stiegert.

He married the former Mildred Veen on May 11, 1957, in Otego. She survives him.

John was a 20-year member of the United States Air Force, serving from 1953 to 1973. He served tours in Korea and Southeast Asia. Following his retirement from the Air Force in 1973, he and his family moved to Otego. There, John was involved in the construction and building trades for eight years and was a maintenance and grounds person for the Unatego Junior-Senior High School in Wells Bridge for 15 years, retiring from that position in 1995.

He was a member of the Oneonta V.F.W. and the Otego American Legion. In October 1998, John and his wife, Mildred, moved to Liverpool to be with their children and grandchildren,

John is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Mildred Stiegert of Liverpool; daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Joseph Licastri of Liverpool; and one son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Kim Stiegert of Liverpool; four grandchildren: Gabrielle and Tamara Licastri and Justin and Kathryn Stiegert, all of Liverpool. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and several cousins in Germany.

A Service to Celebrate the Life of John H. Stiegert will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, from the Otego United Methodist Church, Church Street, Otego. The Rev. Richard Breuninger of Oneonta and the Rev. Fred Albrecht of Otego will officiate. Burial will be later in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be given to the Otego Emergency Squad, River Street, Otego, N.Y. 13825 or to the American Cancer Society Southern District Office, 57 Front St. Binghamton, N.Y. 13905 in memory of John H. Stiegert.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego.

John Van Buren

John Van Buren, 81, of Tampa, Fla., and a resident of the Walton area most of his life, died Friday, Dec. 22, in Tampa.

He was born May 10, 1919 in Schipluiden, Netherlands, to Martin and "Mattie" Van Buren. He was married to Virginia Lee McCoy in 1941. She predeceased him in 1997.

He was also predeceased by his parents, his brother, Paul Van Buren, and his sister, Jessie Mogridge.

Mr. Van Buren was a member of the Northfield Community Church.

Survivors include his brother Ed Van Buren of Walton, a son, Robert Van Buren of Walton, and two daughters: Linda Strasbaugh and Mary Page of Tampa, Fla. He is also survived by several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mr. Van Buren was a farmer, sawyer and truck driver for Kraft Foods before retiring in 1981.

Services will be held Thursday, Dec. 28, at 11 a.m. at Lyon Brothers-Way Inc. Funeral Chapel, Walton, with Pastor D. Ripley of Northfield Community Church in charge.

Calling hours at the funeral chapel will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 27.

Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

Marian C. Lane

SIDNEY — Marian C. Lane, 81, of Sidney died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at her home.

She was born April 7, 1919, to Dr. David William and Mary Fyffe Clark.

She graduated from Walton High School in 1937 and from Mildred Elley Business School in Albany.

She was employed by the Walton Reporter, B.F. Goodrich, Albany, and NYSEG, Walton, before getting married to John Townsend Lane in 1943 at the United Presbyterian Church in Walton.

Mrs. Lane's consuming interests were God and the church, family and friends and the well-being of our country.

She was a homemaker and active with her husband in politics. As a member of the United Presbyterian Church, she taught Sunday school and participated in various women's groups of the church.

In later years, she was an accountant at Lane's Pharmacy in Walton, endearing herself to customers and management alike for her caring and concern.

She was an avid reader and golfer; she enjoyed tennis, snowshoeing and bridge.

In 1983, the Lanes retired to Sidney to be closer to their family and were members of the United Methodist Church of Sidney.

Mrs. Lane is survived by her husband, John Townsend Lane of Sidney; her children, Nancy Jo of Grand Rapids, Mich., Mary Jean of Rochester, N.Y., and Linda Sue and Rick Winkler of Maryland, N.Y.; brother and sister-in-law, John and Jeanne Clark of Walton; grandchildren, Meredith and A.J. Herrmann of Oneonta; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, from C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the Sidney United Methodist Church, officiating.

Committal services will be held in Walton Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney United Methodist Church or Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Charles J. Lazeski

ONEONTA — Charles J. Lazeski, 82, of Oneonta died Monday, December 25, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born on Aug. 9, 1918, in Blossburg, Pa., the son of Andrew and Martha (Klugo) Lazeski.

He married Eleanor Tulecki on Feb. 15, 1947, in St. Casmir's Church, Elmira.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a radio operator technician in the Pacific Theater.

Charlie retired in 1981 as a transportation foreman at NYSEG in Oneonta, where he worked for 34 years.

He was a member of St. Mary's Church and a faithful usher for many years.

He also was a member of American Legion Post 259 and the NYSEG Quarter Century Club, along with being an amateur radio operator.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor E. Lazeski of Oneonta; and a sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Ralph Huff of Rochester. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church with the Rev. Robert Longobucco, associate pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in the spring in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

There will be no calling hours, and in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Wayne F. Jester

Wayne Frederick Jester, 73, of Oneonta, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, in the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Emergency Room, Oneonta.

He was born Feb. 13, 1927, in Oneonta, the son of E. Frederic and Clive (Bryant) Jester. He married the former Charlotte Neer, who survives him.

Wayne was a lifelong Oneonta area resident. He was a mail carrier for the Oneonta post office for 30 years, retiring in 1986. He had also worked for the Delaware & Hudson Railway for about 10 years. A veteran of World War II, he had served in the U.S. Navy from Feb. 12, 1945, through July 29, 1946.

In his earlier years, he played baseball with the Milford Macs and was player of the year in 1953. He enjoyed golf, bowling and fishing as pastimes and will be remembered as a wonderful father and husband.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte N. Jester of Oneonta; one daughter and son-in-law, Diane Marie Jester Bookhout and William Bookhout of Oneonta; one son and daughter-in-law, Douglas F. and Belinda Boger Jester of Greensboro, N.C.; five grandchildren, Brooks Jester, Daniel and Benjamin Bookhout and Matthew and Samuel Jester; four brothers and five sisters-in-law, Donald and Dolores Jester, Richard and Joan Jester, Rodney and Evelyn Jester, Bruce and Nancy Jester and Edith Jester; and four sisters and two brothers-in-law: Eunice Jester Bush, Beverly and George Wetmore, Nancy and William Rasmussen and Betsy Squaires. He was also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his twin brother, Warren Jester, and sister, Sally Jester.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. The Rev. Melvin Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, Oneonta, will officiate.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, after 3 p.m. Dec. 26, at their convenience until service time. Burial will be in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin, in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice in memory of Wayne Frederick Jester. For those who wish to attend, a reception will be held at the Neptune Diner, Route 23, Southside, after the funeral service.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Ada L. Stickles

BURLINGTON — Ada. L. Stickles, 90, of Burlington, N.Y., passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000 at Bassett Hospital.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harry R. Stickles.

Ada is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Kearney and Esther Stickles; her granddaughter, Kimberly Kucera and her family, David, Justin and Samantha; and her granddaughter, Heather Cornell, and her family, Jamie and Liam. She also is survived by a special friend, Debbie Rood; as well as many nieces and nephews.

At Ada's request, she donated her remains to medical research.

A memorial service will be held in the spring, Ada's favorite time of the year.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Catskill Area Hospice Inc. 542 Main St., Oneonta.

William A. Rickert

Edward A. Wildt

GLEN HEAD — Edward A. Wildt died on Dec. 25, 2000.

He was the beloved husband of Isabelle and loving father of George. He was the dear brother of Frederick, Richard, Robert and the late George.

He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours are Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Whitting Funeral Home in Glen Head.

The funeral service will be held Friday morning at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Nassau Knolls Cemetery, Port  Washington.

Contributions may be made to The Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 710 West 168th St., New York City, N.Y. 10032.

Meredith Bivins Sr.

ESPERANCE — Meredith T. "Pop" Bivins Sr., 83, formerly of Sanitarium Road, Esperance, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at the Robinson Terrace Nursing Home in Stamford, where he had been a resident since May of 1996.

Mr. Bivins was born April 30, 1917, in the town of Blenheim, the son of William and Lena (Grass) Bivins. He had attended the Wharton Hollow one-room schoolhouse.

Mr. Bivins had resided in Esperance for more than 40 years. He worked as an auto mechanic for various garages in  White Plains, Scotia, Schenectady and Schoharie County. He had also worked as a self-employed carpenter and had also worked at Harvest Homes in Delanson. He retired in 1974 and later tended bar at the Esperance Hotel and the Elks Lodge.

He was a member of Esperance Elks Lodge #2507.

He served his country during WWII in the Army, where he was a mechanic in the motor pool. He was stationed in Cairo, Egypt, until being honorably discharged as a corporal.

He is survived by three sons, Meredith T. Bivins Jr. of Graham,  Washington, Gary W. Bivins of Esperance and Richard P. Bivins of Loudonville; two daughters, Barbara Larkin of Esperance and Janice Wright of Central Bridge; two sisters, Laura Skinner of Endicott and Catherine Pummell of Stamford; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

"Pop" was pre-deceased by a grandson, Mark Benninger, in 1993.

A funeral and committal service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2000 at the Langan Funeral Home, 21 North Main St., Central Bridge.

Burial will be at a later date in the Sloansville Valley Cemetery. The Rev. Elizabeth J. Stewart, pastor of the Central Bridge United Methodist Church, and the Reverend Albert Motta, pastor of the Schoharie Valley Gospel Church, will co-officiate.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home in Central Bridge.

The Esperance Elks Lodge #2507 will hold an Elks service at 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Bivins' memory to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta.

David Lee Myers

LEXINGTON PARK — David Lee Myers, USN/Ret., 54, of Lexington Park, Md., died on Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital in Leonardtown, Md.

He was born on Oct. 4, 1946, in Fort Wayne, Idaho, son of the late John Fred and Agnes Maloney Myers.

Mr. Myers was a logistic analyst for Information Spectrum Corp. Previously, he was employed with Paul Beltway Plastic until 1996. He also served in the U.S. Navy and retired in 1983.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Rifenburgh Myers of Lexington Park, Md., whom he married on Sept. 11, 1966, in Richmondville.

He is also survived by two daughters, Denise Anne Gontarek of Leonardtown, Md., and Brenda Lee  Johnson of  Oklahoma City; a son, David Allen Myers of Lexington Park, Md.; and two sisters, Carole Anne Clarke of Newport News, Va., and Alta Huston of Frederick, Md.

Family and friends will be received on Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, in The Brinsfield Funeral Home Chapel, 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, Md. 20650.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at 11 a.m. in the St. Nicholas Chapel, Patuxent River Naval Air Base, Route 235, Patuxent River, Md. The Rev. Gatest Jones, chaplain, will be officiating.

Burial will follow at Charles Memorial Gardens, Leonardtown, Md.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Prostate Cancer Research Institute, 5777 West Century Blvd., #885, Los Angeles,  Calif. 90045.

Arrangements are provided by Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A., Leonardtown, Md.
