Richard D. Ives

BAINBRIDGE — Richard D. Ives, 68, of 117 West Keech Road, Bainbridge, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at his residence.

He was born Jan. 14, 1932, in the town of Coventry, the son of the late Arthur J. and Eva Haight Ives. He was first married to Sandra Alford in August 1956; she passed away on Nov. 4, 1957. He later married Emily Searles on Feb. 17, 1961, and she passed away June 18, 1988. On Jan. 6, 1989, he married Alberta Pope in Afton.

Dick was employed by Agway Energy Products of Afton for more than 27 years. He retired on April 1, 1992.

He is survived by his wife, Alberta Ives of Bainbridge; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Alice Barnhart of Sidney and Jeanne and Bruce Gorton of Bainbridge; a brother and sister-in-law, Louis and Virginia Ives of Rochester; three stepsons and a daughter-in-law, Thomas and Sharon Hartwell of Martinsburg, W.Va., Terry Hartwell of Milwaukee and Ronald Hartwell of Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Lou Anna Ives of Greene; four stepgrandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Two brothers, Clayton and Roger Ives, predeceased him.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Douglas Horne, pastor of the Afton and Nineveh Presbyterian churches, officiating. Burial will be in the Glenwood Cemetery, Afton.

Friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at the funeral chapel, with his family in attendance.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Bainbridge Emergency Squad or Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, N.Y. 13815.

Ward V. Baulch

BURLINGTON FLATS — Ward Vaughn Baulch, 87, of Burlington Flats, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at Fox Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born in the town of Exeter, the son of Edgar and Doris (Joslyn) Baulch.

His mother died when Ward was 1 year old, and he was raised by his grandparents, Jay and Viola Joslyn.

He married Wilma Cole in Burlington Flats and, on Dec. 12, they had been married 66 years.

He had operated his own trucking business for many years and had also been employed by Earl Chase & Sons as a mechanic and driver. He had most recently been employed by the Otsego County Highway Department, retiring after more than 15 years of service.

Ward was of the Methodist faith and is survived by his wife, Wilma, of Burlington Flats; a daughter, Janet Fikes, and her husband, Arleigh, of Burlington Flats; his grandchildren, Cindi Sue Patafie of Clinton and Terry Fikes and his wife, Nanette, of Burlington Flats. His great-grandchildren include Steve and Kevin Patafie and Cassandra and Matthew Fikes. He is also survived by a sister, Elouise Leaman of Orange City, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Sarah Baulch of Burlington Flats; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Lysle Baulch, who died in 1992.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Baulch residence, at 150 Arnold Road, Burlington Flats, with the Rev. William Highfield officiating.

Calling hours were Friday afternoon and evening at the Baulch residence.

Friends are asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations in his memory be made to the American Legion Post of Edmeston or the Edmeston Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

John J. Barry

EAST WORCESTER — John J. Barry, 75, formerly of the Bronx, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at his residence.

He was born on Dec. 6, 1925, in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland, the son of Patrick and Susan (Spillane) Barry.

John married Mary J. Horkan on April 21, 1951, at St. Brendan's Church, the Bronx.

Mr. Barry served with the U.S. Army occupation force in Germany from 1951 to 1953.

He was employed with Con Edison, the Bronx, for 41 years, retiring in August of 1989.

In 1990, he and his wife moved to East Worcester.

Mr. Barry was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Worcester, and the Schenevus VFW Post 2752.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary J. Barry; his five daughters, Susan Ward, Maureen Spulka, Kathleen Boothroyd, Theresa Genovese and Sheila Romine; 11 grandchildren; a brother, Maurice Barry, and sister, Mary Tangney, both of Ireland; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, and Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, Worcester. A vigil service will be held at 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Worcester, with the Rev. Edward J. Golding as celebrant.

Burial with full military honors will take place in the spring at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Worcester.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mr. Barry to the American Heart Association, 120 Lomond Court, Lomond Place Office Park, Utica, N.Y. 13502.

Funeral arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

James Honeywell

DELHI — James W. Honeywell, 85, of New Berlin, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at A.O. Fox Hospital.

He was born June 18, 1915, in Delhi, the son of Warren W. Honeywell and Maude (Capach) Honeywell.

He is survived by his loving wife, Billie; sister, Mary Dodds of Florida; six children, Jim and Toni Honeywell of Silver Springs, Md., Marsha and Neil Foote of Morris, John and Terry Honeywell of Chestertown, Md., Jeff Honeywell of California, Linda and Andy Sherman of Remsen and Mike and Betty Taranto of New Berlin; 14 grandchildrcn and four great-grandchildren,

He attended Delaware Academy in Delhi. After graduation in 1933, he attended Syracuse University and was graduated in 1937 with a BA degree, and in 1939 with a degree of LLB.

He was admitted to the New York State Bar in September of 1939 and the Federal Bar in 1940 and was a member of the Chenango County and New York state bar associations. He had an individual practice in Delhi from 1939-1941, partnerships with Morse and Honeywell, New Berlin, from 1941-1962, Honeywell and Ingraham 1962-1976, Honeywell and Dowd 1976-1980 and counsel with Hubert L. Brown Law Offices 1980-1995. He numbered among his many clients seven central school districts, The Preferred Mutual Insurance Co., the I.L. Richer Co.Inc. and three Chase corporations, for which he was general counsel as well as a director. He served as attorney for both the village and town of New Berlin and was for many years New Berlin town historian. He was also, for many years, New York Tax Attorney for Chenango County.

His practice was interrupted for two years' service in the United States Navy. He enlisted as a seaman out of Sampson Naval Training Center, later attending Naval Midshipman's School at Northwestern University in Chicago. After being commissioned, he served on an amphibious landing craft in the Marianas Islands as officer in Charge of LCT 448 and was retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve as a lieutenant.

As a civic leader, he served in many capacities as American League Post commander and was also a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Cooperstown. He was a charter member and president of the New Berlin Rotary Club, Master of Phoebus Lodge, and District Deputy, Grand Master of the Broome Chenango District, also serving two years as chairman of the Chenango County Boy Scouts of America. He was a member and vestryman of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, and for a time was a director of Hartwick College Citizens Board. He was director, vice president and president of the Tri County Motor Club for many years.

For years he enjoyed boating and was a member and past commodore of the Otsego Boating Association. He and his wife, Billie, traveled intensively both in the United States and overseas. He enjoyed his family, fishing, golfing, four wheeling on the Foote farm, reading and having coffee with the "girls" on Saturday morning. He will be missed by all.

Calling hours were Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Dakin's Funeral Home.

The funeral was held Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at 1 p.m. at St. Andrew's in New Berlin, with Father Chuck  Taylor officiating.

Burial with full military honors will take place in the spring at St. Andrew's cemetery.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Jim to the American Cancer Society or St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.

Mahlon S. Briggs

DAVENPORT — Mahlon S. Briggs, 90, of Prosser Hollow, Davenport, died Dec. 30, 2000, at Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

He was born Nov. 11, 1910, in Stamford, the son of Caleb Whiting and Florence L. (Ruff) Briggs.

He married Marion (Beckwith) Briggs on Jan. 1, 1935, in Endicott.

Mrs. Briggs survives, as do his daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Francis Montgomery of Prosser Hollow; a daughter-in-law, Vernadine Briggs of Prosser Hollow; a son-in-law, Charles Cerosaletti of Davenport Center; three sisters, Mrs. Hugh (Helen) Spencer of Norwich, Mrs. Edna Goss of Prosser Hollow, Mrs. Anna Butler of Laurens; 12 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews,

Mr. Briggs moved to Davenport in 1936. He was a member of the West Davenport Methodist Church; president of Charlotte Valley Cemetery, West Davenport; belonged to Davenport Grange and was a trustee of a one-room school house on Prosser Hollow.

Along with owning and operating his own dairy farm and saw mill, he raised bees, grew potatoes and cauliflower and made maple syrup. Following his retirement, he and Mrs. Briggs made many enjoyable trips to their home in Florida.

Two sons predeceased him, John Paul Briggs, at birth, and Bernald Briggs Sr,; a daughter, Marilyn Cerosaetti; and two sisters, Elsie and Betty Briggs.

Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport, with the Rev. Olu Harding of West Davenport Methodist Church officiating.

Calling hours will be today, Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Charlotte Valley Cemetery, West Davenport, in the spring.

Contributions in his memory may be made to either the West Davenport Methodist Church or the Charlotte Valley Cemetery, West Davenport.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport.

Mary Hunt Russell

COOPERSTOWN — Mary Emilie Hunt Russell, 93, of Cooperstown, died Saturday evening, Dec. 30, 2000, at The Meadows.

She was born on Nov. 27, 1907, at the family homestead on Eggleston Hill in the town of Middlefield, a daughter of George and Karen (Bramsen) Hunt.

She married Clifford L. Russell on Oct. 28, 1928, in Milford. Mr. Russell died on June 8, 1982.

Mary was raised in the Milford area and attended Milford High School. Over the course of her life, she was employed by several area establishments, including The Inn at Cooperstown and Ellsworth and Sill, where she served as a clerk from 1945 to 1957. Her last place of employment was at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, where she was employed as a nurse's aide from 1962 until 1967.

She was of the United Methodist faith and was a member of the Pocahontas (Red Wing) Club in Cooperstown.

Mary is survived by two sons, Robert L. Russell, and his wife, Hazel, of Columbus, Ga., and William S. Russell, and his wife, Emma, of Big Bear City,  Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Thelma Kingsley, of Schenectady; nine grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and several cousins.

Graveside services will be private and at the convenience of the family in the spring at the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to The Tribute Fund, c/o Friends of Bassett, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326, or the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 322, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326-0322.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Howard S. Craig

WESTFORD — Howard S. Craig, 80, of Westford, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare Hospital in Cooperstown from a lengthy illness.

He was born July 27, 1920, in East Meredith.

He is the son of Carrie (Dibble) Craig.

Howard resided with the Peeters family in Westford for 40 years, and worked on the Peeters Farm for more than 25 years. Previously, he worked in Delaware County as a farm hand.

He was a member of the East Meredith Presbyterian Church, where his grandfather was once the minister.

He was an avid square dancer and enjoyed country music and baseball.

He is survived by his friends, Marian and her late husband, Herbert Peeters, of Westford and their family; John and Theodora Moore of Middlefield; Thomas and Barbara Bookhout of Maryland; and Ronald and Alberta Ross of Maryland, along with several other Peeters family members.

He was predeceased by his sister, Margaret Grube.

Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, Worcester.

The funeral service will be Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the funeral chapel, with the Rev. Susan Strang, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Worcester, officiating.

Burial will take place at the Westford Cemetery later in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of Howard to the Westford First Responders, P.O. Box 187, Westford. or the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus.

Mildred E. Mitchell

MORRIS — Mildred Edna Mitchell, 66, of Morris, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born Aug. 5, 1934, in Conschoken, Pa., the daughter of Walter and Edna (Buler) McIntyre.

She was married to Ralph Mitchell on July 12, 1952, in Marlton, N.J. He died July 25, 1995.

She was a homemaker and mother and had assisted at the Morris Library at one time. She was an avid bingo player.

She is survived by her children, Brenda Utter and her husband, Phillip, of Morris, Shirl Keator and her husband, Donald, of Edmeston, Carol Phelan and her companion, Jack Boone, of New Berlin, Susan Harp and her husband, Daniel, of Morris, Sharon Anson and her husband, Patrick, of New Berlin, Ralph Mitchell Jr. of Morris, Robert Mitchell and his companion, Dawn Adams, of Lurienburg, Mass., Kevin Mitchell and his wife, Billie, of Morris, Joseph Mitchell and his wife, Melissa, of Ft. Myers, Fla.; a brother, Walter McIntyre and his wife, Elaine, of Lansdale, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Marie McIntyre of Phillipsburg, N.J.; 17 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Kenneth Buler and Harry McIntyre.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris with the Rev. J. Mark Norlund officiating.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Those who wish to make donations can do so to the Morris Emergency Squad in her memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Percy Pugh

EDMESTON — Percy Frederick Pugh, 51, of Coontown Mt. Rd, West Edmeston, died Jan. 1, 2001, at home.

He was born June 13, 1949, in Cooperstown, son of Percy and Margaret (Shillieto) Pugh.

He married Debra (Love) Pugh on March 29, 1975.

Percy spent most of his life in the West Edmeston area. He was a graduate of the Edmeston Central School and the Utica School of Commerce.

He is survived by two daughters, Rebecca, of Boston, Mass., and Stacy, of Mayfield; one son, Gavin, of Middletown; his parents; four sisters, Mrs. Nancy and Steven Purdy of Morris, Mrs. Mary Lynne and Timothy Gress of LaGrange, Ohio, Mrs. Diane and Paul Mack of Richmond, Va., and Mrs. Carol and Rodney Pratt of Tucson, Ariz.

He was a self-employed woodworker and carriage maker. He also was a trustee for the West Edmeston Cemetery Association. Percy was a member of the Madison Mennonite Church. He served in the United States Army with duties of military police and clerk.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Madison Mennonite Church, with John Beiler of the Madison Mennonite Church officiating.

Burial will be in West Edmeston Cemetery, West Edmeston.

Calling hours will be today, Jan. 2, 2001, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

In Fred's memory, contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, or the West Edmeston Cemetery Association, West Edmeston.

Ruth A. Miller

WALTON — Ruth A. Miller, 84, of Walton, died Dec. 31, 2000 at Delaware Valley Hospital.

Ruth was born Sept. 30, 1916, in Brooklyn, the daughter of John and Edith Hartley Bolk.

She married George Patrick Miller on April 22, 1947. He predeceased her on April 17, 1955.

Before her marriage, Ruth worked for Mack Truck. She was office manager for Copiague Public Schools on Long Island until retiring. Also, she was Sunday School superintendant at the United Christian Church of Copiague and a choir member.

A Walton-area resident for the past 22 years, Ruth served as Sunday School superintendant of the United Presbyterian Church of Walton. At one time she enjoyed English-style horseback riding.

Surviving are two daughters, Barbara E. Miller of Walton and Mrs. Al (Pat) Grust of Walton; two grandchildren, Jennifer Grust-Lamoreaux of Walton and Heidi Grust-Rigas of Oneonta; and two great-grandchildren.

Her son, George Patrick Miller Jr., predeceased her.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday Jan. 3, 2001, at 1 p.m. at Clark and Winter Funeral Home, Walton, with the Rev. Dr, James F. Martin, pastor of the Walton United Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from noon until service time.

Burial will be in Long Island National Cemetery, in Farmingdale, L.I.

Memorials to the Alz-heimer's Foundation in the name of Ruth A. Miller will be appreciated.
