An honorably discharged United States Army veteran, he served proudly in Korea during the Korean War.

For many years Bill was associated with his father and grandfather in the family lumber business, A.T. Schooley Lumber Company of Richfield Springs. He then went on to work for Titan Homes, retiring in 1986.

He was a former member of the Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department.

Surviving him are several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Elizabeth Frederick

NORWICH — Elizabeth May Frederick (nee Stark) passed away on Monday, Dec. 18, 2000.

She was born in Norwich in September 1960, to Vincent and Marjorie Stark (nee Johnson). Elizabeth was followed by Stephen Stark of Clarence and Nathan Souders of Las Vegas, Nev., by way of their common mother. Elizabeth is also the older sister of Marney Smith (nee Stark), Lisa Stark and Jonathan Stark, all of Florida, by way of their common father. Beth is also survived by a former stepfather, Allan Conway of Oneonta.

Beth was raised in Norwich as part of a large extended family. Beth's mother, Marjorie Johnson, currently of Phoenix, Ariz., is the youngest of seven children born to the late Fred and Verna Johnson, originally from Gilbertsville. The  Johnson children include Doris (husband Roy) Seeley of Oxford, Ralph  Johnson of Harpursville, Jean (husband the late Victor) Markiewicz of Windsor Locks, Conn., the late Donald (wife the late Margie)  Johnson of Bainbridge, Anna (husband Thomas) Kennedy of Norwich, Charlotte (husband Don) Wenzel of S. New Berlin.

Beth's father, Vincent, currently of Gilbertsville, is the second child of four of the late Frank Start and Laura Van Dusen (nee Stark) of Oneonta. Vincent's older brother, Howard Todd, by their common mother is the current mayor of Morris. Vincent's younger sisters are Diane Cardwell (nee Stark) of New Jersey and Cindy Young (nee Stark) of Franklin. Vincent is cousin of Marjorie Chomyzak (nee Stark), the former Mayor of Norwich.

Beth is survived by many cousins, several in and about the central New York area, including Jackie Bowman, Earnie Cook, Jane Cook, Vickie Hendrickson, Larry Kennedy, Annette Monday, Thomas Cook, Gary, Tim and Brian Moore, Diana Keeney, Elaine Rohinski, Laurie Howard, Verna Broekhuizen, Mark Johnson, Lloyd Bradford and Linda Bradford.

Many of Beth's early years, in the 1960s and 1970s, were spent at her maternal grandmother's home at the top of Miller Hill at 23 Pleasant St. in Norwich, which served as the extended family's hub and haven. Here beloved Grandma  Johnson led the family for many years following the death of her own husband.

Beth attended and graduated from Gibson Elementary School in 1972. While there, she participated in kickball, choir and the crossing guard. In junior and senior high school, Beth was active in the Color Guard, choir, various school musicals and, later, the ski club. She also swam competitively at the YMCA.

For employment during her time in Norwich, Beth often baby-sat for families that will remember her well. In addition, she worked for two years during high school at the local McDonald's. Beth graduated from Norwich Senior High School in 1978, with a Regents diploma.

She pursued her further education at the State University College at Oswego and graduated from that institution in 1982, with a degree in sociology and criminal justice. While in college, Beth worked at the campus information desk. At that time, Beth was also involved as a member of Phi Lambda Phi sorority as their informal social director. After graduation, Beth returned briefly to Norwich, where she worked at Victory Markets.

In early 1983, Beth moved with her brother Stephen to Buffalo, where he had transferred as part of his undergraduate education. At that time they shared a large house with one of Beth's college friend's from Oswego and one large rat. Beth worked briefly for Wegman's Super Markets and then for Denny's restaurants. Shortly thereafter, Beth became a manager for Denny's and worked in that capacity for five years throughout western New York.

It was at Denny's that Beth fatefully met her future husband, Mark Frederick, who was also a manager at the time. Few observers would have guessed at the time that Beth and Mark would one day marry.

Beth left Denny's in 1989 and joined Empire Savings and Loan in their downtown Buffalo branch. Empire was eventually acquired by M&T Bank. Beth continued to work for M&T until she relocated to Phoenix, Ariz., in 1994. In Phoenix, Beth worked as a nanny for a young widowed mother, Judy Hunt, who was seeking to complete her medical education. At that time, Beth was involved in medical missions to Mexico and worked toward completing her master's degree through Phoenix Seminary.

Beth returned to western New York in January 1997 and was married to Charles Mark Frederick of Buffalo in August of that year. In Buffalo, Beth was actively involved in her church, First Free Methodist, and various volunteer activities. At the time of her death, Beth was employed at Catholic Charities of Buffalo, where she worked as a home care coordinator.

Through her life Beth traveled in wide circles and deeply touched many lives. She will be greatly missed.

The family is currently planning a celebration service to be held on April 14, at the First Baptist Church, Norwich.
