Jean Connolly

SPRINGFIELD CENTER — Jean Garnett Connolly, born on Aug. 11, 1924, 76 years old, died Jan. 15, 2001, at home at Harmony Row after a prolonged illness.

She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., to Catherine and Hugh Garnett and married, in 1943, to Wallace Michael Connolly until his death in 1995.

She is remembered with much love by her companion and caregiver, Hiram Ward, and her five children, Kenneth, Germaine, Michael, James and Jennifer.

Her career as a mother dominated her life; however, her interests and intelligence carried her into areas that ranged from creative writing, philosophy, psychology and gardening to architectural design. She built two houses during her life. As a young married woman with two babies, she designed a new home built to her specifications in New Jersey, where her family of five children were raised.

Following her husband's retirement, the couple took up residence on River Street in Cooperstown, where she was active in the Cooperstown Gardening Club as an African Violet expert. She also continued her intellectual activities as a lifetime member of MENSA, writing a column in the newsletter for the New York chapter of that exclusive society.

As primary caregiver for her husband, she nursed him in their home during his terminal illness. After her husband's death, she began the reconstruction of a one-hundred-and-fifty-year-old landmark in Springfield Center, at the north end of Lake Otsego. Harmony Row was a large tumbledown ruin with gaping windows and rotting clapboards on the village's main street. This local eyesore was painstakingly restored, refurbished and revitalized through Jean's energy and creative efforts. While giving life to the old building, she made friends throughout the town.

Her generosity and warmth are remembered by those who came in contact with her during her final years here in New York as well as family and friends scattered along the eastern seaboard.

Jean's memorial funeral Mass will be held at The Church of the Blessed Sacrament in Springfield Center on Saturday morning, Jan. 20, at 11 am. All are welcome.
