Wilhelm Certain

PINE HILL — Wilhelm B. Certain died Jan. 15, 2001, from complications during an operation to implant a pacemaker at Kingston Hospital.

A Pine Hill resident, he was 85. He regularly received dialysis treatments as a result of kidney disease.

Born on June 12, 1915, as Wilhelm B. Certain to Bertha and Elmer Certain in Sag Harbor, Long Island.

Wilhelm was the second of four boys. When he was a young child, his father died, resulting in the boys living much of the time with their uncle, an A.M.E. Zion Minister who served in numerous Long Island churches.

Wilhelm started school in Sag Harbor, but his uncle was often reassigned to numerous communities. After a year or two, the young Certain received his education from various Long Island schools, such as Riverhead, Hempstead and Westbury. In high school he excelled in football but was never able to play for one school.

On Sundays, Bill and his brothers did their part in helping with church service by forming a quartet known as the "Certain Brothers." Bill sang bass.

Wilhelm was a hard worker and held various jobs. One that occupied most of his life was traveling throughout the United States driving a truck.

Since a young man, Bill had an entrepreneurial spirit. In the late '30s he and his brothers opened one of the first truck steam-cleaning businesses on Long Island.

In the'50s and '60s he owned a restaurant and bar in Glen Cove, Long Island, "The Pelican Club." People still speak of the great pies they served, baked by Bill. Some knew him as Wilhelm, Bill, Daddy Bill, Pop Pop and Jumb. However, Dad was the name he probably loved most.

He bought a home on Roger Road in Bellmore, Long Island, where he lived with his wife, Octavia, and they raised two children, his son, William B. Certain, who passed away last year, and his daughter, Bernice, who is a resident of North Carolina.

He is survived by his brother, Noel; daughter, Bernice and her husband, Sam Fleming; nine grandchildren, Diane, Debbie, Denise, William, Amber, Anna, John, Wilhelm and Booker; and 19 great-grandchildren.

He traces part of his ancestry to some of Long Island's oldest residents, the Montauk Indian tribe.

In the '70s he married Paula Tullis, later to settle in Fleischmanns. Finally, Bill and Paula moved to his present home in Pine Hill, where they were in close proximity to his granddaughter Amber and former daughter-in-law, Karen. Paula passed away in September 1999.

In all of the communities he lived and worked he was able to easily make friends. Those of us who knew him remember a big man with a gentle kind spirit.

A memorial service will be held this spring on Long Island at a time and place to be announced and his ashes will be returned to Mother Earth overlooking the Great South Bay on the Shinnecock Reservation.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
