Frank J. Wening

STAMFORD — Frank J. Wening, 93, of Stamford, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Sara's Senior Care, where he was resident for several years.

He was born March 21, 1907, in Verden, Germany. He immigrated to the United States in 1929, settling in Cincinnati, Ohio.

He later moved to New York City and worked for many years as a meat cutter, VFCW Local 174, which he joined in February 1946.

Frank was a veteran of the United States Army, where he served as a cook in the Army Engineers during World War II. He served from October 1942 until he was honorably discharged in February 1946.

He married Elizabeth Spahr in New York City. They owned a farm in  Jefferson for many years, later moving to Stamford. Elizabeth died in 1972.

His sister-in-law, Maria Schmitz of Stamford, survives him.

His mother, father and many brothers and sisters predeceased him.

His remains will be interred in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Stamford sometime in the spring.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Marcia J. Kraynak

WARREN — Marcia Jean Kraynak, 48, of Hoke Road, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, in her home.

She was born on Feb. 22, 1952. in Rutland, Vt., daughter of the late John and Rachel Stevens.

Marcia was raised and educated in California.

On Feb. 15, 1985, she married Douglas James Kraynak in Tribes Hill. Since 1985, they lived in the town of Warren.

Mrs. Kraynak loved her home and was a friend to many; she will never be forgotten. She had a strong belief in God and lived a Christian life.

Surviving besides her husband of 15 years, Douglas, are two brothers, William Stevens of Dallas,  Texas, and Lawrence Stevens of Arizona; three sisters, Judith Krona of Fort Johnson, Barbara Gross of Fultonville and Babe Pryne of St. Augustine, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. in the family home at 303 Hoke Road, town of Warren. The Rev. James Barnes will officiate.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Flora J. Sherwood

ROXBURY — Flora J. Sherwood, 78, of Roxbury, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, in Roxbury.

She was born Sept. 5, 1922, in Union Grove, the daughter of John and Julia (Vausse) Davis.

She married Harvey Sherwood on Aug. 9, 1939, in Margaretville. He died Oct. 2, 1999.

Flora was a very active person working on the family farm in the Vega Valley. She also worked at the Roxbury Central School in the cafeteria and was employed at the Ben Franklin Variety Stores in Stamford and Margaretville.

She was a lifelong area resident.

She was active in the Roxbury American Legion Auxiliary and the Delaware County American Legion Auxiliary.

She was a member of Roxbury Senior Citizens Club, being a former treasurer, the Denver-Vega Card Club, Denver-Vega Home Bureau, Republican election inspector for many years in District #2, Halcottsville Methodist Church and Sunbonnet Quilt Club.

Flora will be remembered for her passion and support of the students at the Roxbury Central School and her attendance at many athletic events, traveling miles to show her support to the students. She belonged to Ronnie Smith Fan Club.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Kathy Sherwood of Verona and Rande and Sue Sherwood of Vega; grandchildren, Chris and Stephanie Sherwood, David and Kelly Sherwood, Jennifer and Ryon Rossi, Michael, Rachel, Bobby and Karey; great-grandchildren, Carly, Caleb and Carin Sherwood, Emily Rossi and  Taylor Palmer; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Francis and Betty Sherwood of Vega, Julian and Pat Sherwood, also of Vega, and Dorothy Davis of Stamford; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four brothers and five sisters.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at the United Methodist Church, Roxbury, with the Rev. George Carpenter and the Rev. Phyllis Skidmore officiating.

Burial will be held at the Vega Cemetery, Vega.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Contributions may be made in memory of Flora Sherwood to the Roxbury Athletic Association, in care of Tom Faraci, Roxbury Central School, Roxbury, N.Y. 12474.

Arrangements are by Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Claudia B. Decker

SIDNEY — Claudia B. Decker, 79, most recently of Sidney and formerly of Franklin, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001.

She was born Sept. 2, 1921, in Cannonsville, the daughter of Arthur and Kathryn (Short) Backus.

She married George B. Decker Sr., on Dec. 11, 1938. He died on Sept. 18, 1993.

Claudia retired in 1976, after 10 years of employment, as a ward clerk at The Hospital in Sidney.

She was a member of the Franklin United Methodist Church.

Claudia was Mother to everyone. Affectionately known as "Ma," the lady with the glowing smile, she was held in high regard by her children, grandchildren and her many friends.

During her husband's prolonged illness in earlier years, Claudia supported her young family by baking and delivering bread. But through all the trials and tribulations, she maintained a sense of humor and a zest for life.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, George B. and Jean Decker Jr. of Summerfield, Fla., Arthur B. Decker of South New Berlin, Warren D. and Jane Decker of Ocal, Fla., Lawrence J. and Janice Decker of Bainbridge, Lewis W. and Terri Decker of Baltimore, Md., Thea M. Green of Sidney, Ruth E. Marshall of Franklin and Elaine C. and Scott Parker of Morris; 26 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; a brother, Lewis Backus of Bainbridge; and her sisters, Isabelle Walley of Deposit, Veda Walley of Sidney and Margaret Ford of Afton; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by two grandchildren; six brothers and three sisters.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at 2 p.m. in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin. Burial will be in the spring in the Glenwood Cemetery, Afton.

Friends may call Friday evening from 7 to 9 at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home in Franklin at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin or Sidney Emergency Squads or the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Thomas D. Lynch

ONEONTA — Thomas D. Lynch, 93, of Oneonta, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born July 11, 1907, in Caribou, Maine, the son of David and Roseanna (Thibodeau) Lynch.

He married Ethel Hecox on June 14, 1930. She died on June 21, 1996.

Mr. Lynch retired in 1973, after 37 years of service with the United States Postal Service in Oneonta.

An area resident since 1929, he was a member of St. Mary's Church, Oneonta.

In the year 2000, the Jubilee year for Roman Catholics, Mr. Lynch was featured in an article on aging published in the Albany Diocese newspaper, the Evangelist.

He is survived by his children, Thomas D. Lynch and his wife, Kay, of Walnut Creek,  Calif., and Nancy Anne Lynch of Oneonta; his grandchildren, Beckie Kinghorn, Frances Lynch, Shauna Eisenmann, Amy Lynch and Kathleen Miller; along with five great-grandchildren; a sister and two brothers, Isabelle Martineau of Hampstead, N.H., and George and Edward Lynch, both of Methuen, N.H. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a son, William John Lynch; two brothers, the Rev. John Lynch, S.M., and Ernest Lynch.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating. Burial will be later in the spring at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call today at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's School Building Fund.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home in Oneonta.

Jeffrey Jon Davis

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Jeffrey Jon Davis, 35, of Richfield Springs and formerly of Morris, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, in Richfield Springs.

He was born Oct. 24, 1965, in Cooperstown, the son of N. Van Davis and Marion (Ray) Davis.

He was a graduate of Morris Central School and also of Elmira College where he attained his degree in marketing.

Jeff had been employed by various employers and most recently was employed at the Otesaga of Cooperstown.

He enjoyed water sports, snowmobiling, the great outdoors and especially working with his hands.

He is survived by his sisters, Jeanne Hengey and Bruce of Telford, Pa., Pamela Cole and her husband, David, of Westford, Susan Shisler and her husband, David, of Colorado Springs,  Colo.; his companion, Lana Smith of Richfield Springs; three nieces, Sandra Cole, Erin MacDonald and Amanda Knowles; a nephew, Darrick Cole; an aunt, Sarah Espy of Wilmington, Del.; a grand niece; three grand nephews; and four cousins.

Jeff was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Van Edward (Pete) Davis; two nephews, Scott MacDonald and Damian Cole; and an aunt, Margaret R. Stuart.

A memorial service for Jeff will be held Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Zion Episcopal Church in Morris, with Deacon Millie Williams officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Fairview Cemetery in Bridgewater.

Calling hours will be private at the Johnston Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to contribute to the American Cancer Society or the charity of one's choice in Jeff's memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Belvia West

LAURENS — Belvia West, 91, of Laurens, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

Belvia was born in Gilboa, Sept. 5, 1909, the daughter of Jeremiah and Myrtle (Reed) Snyder.

She was a resident of Stamford for 50 years, relocating to Laurens in 1970.

Belvia was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Laurens American Legion Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kourtney; and eight brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her sister, Gloria S. Peterson of Beaver, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the William A. Tari Funeral Home, 40 Main St., corner of Liberty, Stamford, from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001.

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Wayland Bray officiating.

Interment will be in the Stamford Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Belvia West Memorial at the United Methodist Church of Stamford.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Evelyn Straus

STAMFORD — Evelyn Straus, 92, of Stamford, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at the Robinson Terrace in Stamford.

She was born May 24, 1908, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Leckie) Molitor.

Evelyn was an area resident for 14 years, relocating from Woodhaven.

She was predeceased by her husband, Richard, in 1989, and her son, Harold, in 1993.

Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Evelyn Adams of Key West, Fla.; her son, Richard Straus and his wife, Catherine, of Stamford; and four grandchildren, Tracey Adams of Key West, Fla., Richard and Adam Straus of Latham, and Emily O'Sullivan of East Quague.

She was a former member of the Harpersfield Senior Citizens Club.

In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Sacred Heart Food Pantry.

Interment will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Stamford.

Services will be private.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the William A. Tari Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford.

Lenore W. Sloan

MESA, Ariz. — Lenore W. Sloan, 81, passed away Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, in Mesa, Ariz.

She was born Sept. 21, 1919, in Glens Falls, N.Y., to Ernest Wilkins and Mary Underwood.

She received a bachelor of education at the State Teachers College in Oneonta, N.Y., and taught at Gilbertsville Central School for many years. After retirement, she moved to Arizona in 1982, from Morris, N.Y.

She was a member of Zion Episcopal Church, Morris.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Adolphus W. Sloan.

She is survived by a son, Douglas Sloan of Watertown, N.Y.; and a daughter, Mary Jane Sloan Mitchell of Pine City, N.Y.

Graveside services are to be held in the spring at Hillington Cemetery in Morris.
