Donald M. Laird

MOUNT UPTON — Donald M. Laird, 69, passed away Feb. 5, 2001, at his home.

He was born May 27, 1931, in Johnstown to the late William C. and Sophia Valachovic Laird.

Don served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War.

He was employed as a senior manufacturing electrical designer for E.C.D of Bendix when he retired in 1986.

Mr. Laird was a member of the American Legion Post #183, Sidney, and the USS Cabot Association.

He is survived by his wife, Bettye Laird of Mount Upton; three sons, Donald Laird Jr. and his wife, Jenny, of Mundelein, Ill., Michael Laird and his wife, Maggie, of Piney Flats, Tenn., and Timothy Laird of Essington, Pa.; two brothers, Richard Laird and his wife, Mary Lou, of Gloversville and Carl Laird and his wife, Jean, of Daytona Beach, Fla.; three sisters, Arlene Lansing and her husband, Henry, of Hemit,  Calif., Virginia Sackett and her husband, Nelson, of Johnstown and Jeanette Kretser and her husband, Roger, of Fort Plains; four grandchildren and one great-grandson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Donald's brother, William Laird, and a sister, Cecile Hurley, predeceased him.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held today at Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Gordon Polenz, pastor, will officiate.

Friends called from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. The American Legion, Post #183, held a service at 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, or to Sacred Heart Church.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

William W. Demlin

SPRINGFIELD CENTER — Mr. William Warren Demlin, 71, formerly of Locust Valley, Long Island, and Wilton, Conn., passed away on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2001, in Albany.

He was born Nov. 26, 1929, in Flushing, Long Island, the son of Warren H. and Ruth (Morris) Demlin. He was raised in Douglaston, Long Island.

On Sept. 22, 1956, he married Barbara Calhoun Metzger of Locust Valley, Long Island.

Mr. Demlin was a US Army veteran during the Korean Conflict. He was a mason.

He worked as a graphic designer and art director in New York City and Connecticut for several advertising agencies. He was IBM's art director for the office-product division on East 57th St., New York City.

He attended the Art Students League and Pratt Institute and won many awards from the Art Director's Club.

In 1983, he and his wife opened an antique shop in Springfield Center. He was very active in the business after his retirement from advertising.

Besides his wife of 44 years, Barbara Demlin, he is survived by a son, Christopher H. Demlin of Springfield, and a brother, Warren H. Demlin Jr. of New York City.

Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley, and inurnment will be in his family plot in Cyrwyd, Pa.

Contributions in Mr. Demlin's memory may be made to the heart or diabetic associations.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Vurla J. Kane

BRADENTON, Fla. — Vurla "Rustie" Kane, 63, of Bradenton, Fla., and Bainbridge, N.Y., passed away unexpectedly Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, in the Manatee Memorial Hospital, Bradenton.

She was born Aug. 28, 1937, in Bainbridge, N.Y., the daughter of the late Lawrence and Louesa Bennett Sherman.

On Jan. 24, 1959, she married Delmar Kane in Bainbridge, N.Y.

Vurla is survived by her husband of 42 years, Delmar Kane of Bradenton and Bainbridge, N.Y.; two daughters, Daryle Parker and her husband, Terry, of Unadilla, N.Y., and Celinda Kane of Schenectady, N.Y.; and two granddaughters, Joy and April Parker of Unadilla, N.Y.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, N.Y., with the Rev. Sundar Samuel, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Bainbridge, N.Y., officiating.

Burial will be held in the spring in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge, N.Y.

At the family's request, there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the Spinal Cord Society, 24 Davis Ave., Albany, N.Y. 12203.

Alma C. Downs

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — Alma C. Downs, 75, passed away on Feb. 5, 2001.

Alma was born in Milford, N.Y.

She moved to New Port Richey, Fla., in 1984 from Franklin, N.Y.

She was a retired quality-control inspector for Corning Glass in Oneonta, N.Y., for 15 years.

She was of the Methodist faith.

She is survived by her husband, Richard; two sons, David R. of Bradford, Pa., and Paul W. of Spring,  Texas; two daughters, Linda J. Schoenfeld of Cazenovia, N.Y., and Jennette L. Dunivan of Humble,  Texas; one brother, Gordon Cox of Eniclaw, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were made by the National Cremation Society, New Port Richey, Fla.

Carlton M. Irons

VENICE, Fla. — Carlton Marion Irons, 93, formerly of New York, died Feb. 6, 2001.

He was born April 11, 1907, in Burlington, N.Y., the son of Elwin Marion and Hattie Wart Irons.

He lived in the Cooperstown-Oneonta area. After 44 years with the New York Telephone Co., he retired to Venice, Fla. He was a Mason, a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and for many years he was a driver for Meals on Wheels.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Gertrude; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Hilda Irons of Huntington Beach,  Calif.; a daughter, Doris Treadway of Rome, N.Y.; seven grandchildren and their spouses; and 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Harold Irons of Mesa, Ariz., and a niece, Rowena Burgess of Hartwick, N.Y.

Carlton's two sisters, Minnie Mead and Fannie Irons, predeceased him.

His family and friends will always remember and cherish his good nature and wonderful sense of humor.

There will be no local services. Inurnment will be in Hartwick Seminary, N.Y., at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to The Shriner's Children's Hospital.

Sophia B. Puylara

ONEONTA — Mrs. Sophia B. Puylara, 74, of Oneonta, passed away Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at her home.

She was born June 16, 1926, in Oneonta, the daughter of James and Fannie (Shaffer) Sobers.

She married Carl A. Puylara in Unadilla on Dec. 16, 1947.

Sophia attended schools in Oneonta and Sidney. She was a homemaker and assisted her husband Carl in the management of Galinn's Jewelry Store, of which she was a corporate officer. Sophia was also a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oneonta.

Sophia is survived by her husband, Carl Sr.; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Carl Jr. and Susan Puylara, John Puylara and Alfred and Patricia Puylara; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joanne and Lloyd Boyd and Denise and Thomas (Todd) Pettit, all of Oneonta; nine grandchildren, Erika, Alexis, Kerry Ann, Daniel, Brooke, Michael, Alfred Jr., Rebecca and Anjaela; brothers, Carl Sobers and John and Norma Sobers of Oneonta; a sister, Aurilla Stringer of Florida; a brother-in-law, George Smith of Oneonta; a sister-in-law, Edna Sobers of Oneonta; and many nieces and nephews.

Sophia was predeceased by two sisters, Evelyn Cornel and Rachel Smith, and three brothers, Alfred, Fred and James Sobers.

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

At Sophia's request, she will be cremated and graveside services will be announced at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, Main Street, Oneonta.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Thomas R. Wyman

UNADILLA — Thomas R. Wyman, 69, of Unadilla, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born March 26, 1931, in Jersey City, N.J., the son of Raymond and Rose (Sesta) Wyman.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953.

He was married to his wife, Lee, on July 15, 1967, in New York City.

Thomas has been a resident of Unadilla since 1975 and was a former policeman for the city of New York and a retired employee of the EPA of New York City.

He was a 24-year member and past exalted ruler of the BPOE Lodge 2175 of Sidney and was a former district Americanism chairman and district deputy grand exalted ruler during 1999-2000. He was also a member of the Sidney American Legion Post 183.

Thomas is survived by his wife, Lee Wyman, of Unadilla; his mother, Rose Cusumano of Florida; his daughters, Susan Wyman Chambers of Unadilla and Karen Wilcox of Morris; his sons, Chris Redmond of Germany and Joseph Redmond of Oneonta; his brothers, Raymond Wyman and Joseph Cusumano, both of Florida; his grandchildren, Kristi, Joey, Brian, Cathie, Christopher, Candice, Michael, Cassie and Courtenay; also several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Matthew.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, with the Rev. Gordon A. Polenz, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be later in Brookside Cemetery, Gilbertsville.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla, on Monday, Feb. 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., when the family will be in attendance. A Lodge of Sorrow will be held at 6:45 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad or the American Heart Association.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Ervin E. Weaver

MILFORD — Ervin E. Weaver, 69, of Milford, died Thursday evening, Feb. 8, 2001, at home.

He was born on July 29, 1931, in North Carolina. He married the former Joyce L. Hall on Dec. 13, 2000, at their home in Milford.

Ervin moved to the Milford area from  South Carolina in 1993 and was employed by the Lake Front Restaurant in Cooperstown, where he served in many kitchen-related capacities.

Known as "Bionic Man" and "Magic" by his friends, Ervin was an avid outdoorsman, especially enjoying fishing, boating, and taking walks in the woods. He was also fond of vegetable and flower gardening, roses being his favorite. A true Southerner at heart, his favorite Southern food was bean soup and corn bread.

Ervin's wife and friends wish to thank everyone from Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care for their kind, considerate and understanding care.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce, of Milford; his sons, Homer, Patrick and Michael of California, David and Donnie of Reno, Nev., and Kenny of New Jersey; his daughters, Brenda and Jennifer of Minneapolis, Minn.; several grandchildren; several brothers and sisters in  Pennsylvania; and his special kids, Cindy Nichols and Stephanie McAdams of Oneonta and Roger Scanlon of Westville.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John S. Dawson, chaplain for Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, officiating.

Burial will take place at a later date in Hartwick Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday afternoon from 1 p.m. until service time.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Edwin S. Peet

UNADILLA — Edwin S. Peet, 92, of Unadilla, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, peacefully at his home.

He was born in the town of New Lisbon on Aug. 15, 1908, the son of John Z. and Lizzie (Gardner) Peet.

Edwin married the former Dorothy Byam on Oct. 10, 1943, in Rochester. She survives him.

Ed worked in various jobs in the Oneonta area and at Scintilla in Sidney for about 10 years. After his retirement he enjoyed many years of gardening and traveling with his wife, Dorothy. More recently they spent many hours revisiting their trips through photos and brochures.

He'll be fondly remembered for sharing his many vegetables with family and neighbors of Miles Avenue, Oneonta.

Edwin was of the Methodist faith and most recently attended service at the Unadilla Methodist Church.

Ed is survived by his wife, Dorothy Byam Peet of Unadilla; a sister, Sarah Baulch of Burlington Flats; as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was predeceased by his son, John, his brother, Lester, and his sister Ruth Williams.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to contribute to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820, or to the Unadilla Emergency Squad, Unadilla, N.Y. 13849, in memory of Edwin S. Peet.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Lucy B. Forman

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Lucy B. Forman, 89, of Cooperstown, formerly of Richfield Springs and Cherry Valley, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at The Meadows.

She was born Sept. 30, 1911, in Cherry Valley, the daughter of Chester and Ida Boies.

She was predeceased in death by her beloved husband, Clifford M. Forman, friend and partner in life and business.

She enjoyed membership in the Order of the Eastern Star and local bridge groups.

She is survived by her son, Clifford N. Forman, of Cooperstown; granddaughters, Kathleen M. Harrison of Blacksburg, Va., and Sandra L. Greenlee of Newport, Va.; great-granddaughters, Samantha V. Callahan of Narrows, Va., Sasha C. Harrison of Charlottesville, Va., and Safia J. Harrison of Blackburg, Va.; and a great-great granddaughter, Alaura V. Callahan of Narrows, Va.

A private funeral will be held for family members.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Forman's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation, Northeastern New York Chapter Leatherstocking Region branch, P.O. Box 1364, Oneonta, NY 13820.

She was loved and will be missed by all those who knew her.

Angelo J. Pugliese

COOPERSTOWN — Angelo J. Pugliese, 81, passed away peacefully Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001.

He was born March 1, 1919, to Maria Angelo Ruggerio and Felice Pugliese.

Angelo was a lifelong resident of Cooperstown, a graduate of CCS class of 1939 and a member of our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church, the Mohican Club and the VFW.

The first to enlist in Otsego County, he was a WWII staff sergeant in the Army Air Corps. Angelo served in the American and European African Eastern Campaign. Upon being honorably discharged, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.

He met his wife of 55 years, Paulette M. Bonnet, in Algiers, Algeria.

Angelo was a certified mechanic and a fixture at the Alfred Corning Clark Gymnasium from 1957 to 1987, where he touched the lives of many children in Cooperstown.

His memory will live on in his children, Mary Murdock, Rose Dorsman and Ralph Pugliese. He was a generous father-in-law to Bill, Bill and Susan. Angelo was a proud grandfather of Todd, Melinda, Scott and Brent Murdock and Craig and Garrett Dorsman. Angelo was a cherished great-grandfather of Sumer and Mya Murdock. He was a devoted brother to Rose Bridge and Carmel Pugliese. His life of joy was also shared with many nieces and nephews.

Because Angelo was an avid sports fan and believer that children truly make a difference in the world, memorial contributions may be made, in lieu of flowers, to ACC Gymnasium for children who need to receive the gift of pleasure, fun and play. Please send donations to Clark Scholarship, P.O. Box 850, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326 in his memory.

The family will be receiving family and friends on Tuesday, Feb. 13, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

The Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 14, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, Elm Street, Cooperstown, with the Rev. John Rosson and Rev. John Roos officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
