Janice E. Manon

MARGARETVILLE — Janice E. Manon, 53, died Saturday, Feb. 10, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital from a lengthy illness.

Janice was born May 19, 1947, in the town of Roxbury, the daughter of John E. and Mary (Vansteenburgh) Sprague.

Janice had been employed at the Country Store in Margaretville, the Margaretville Central School and the NBT Bank.

Janice was a member of the United Methodist Church. She enjoyed working on arts and crafts, and she enjoyed the outdoors with her flowers.

She is survived by her mother, Mary Sprague; three daughters, Tammy Nobile, Patricia Berghammer and Lisa Labumbard; four brothers, Clayton, Hector, Victor and Asher Sprague; seven sisters, Cheryl Sprague, Frieda Manon, Ruby Sprague, Betty Martin, Shirley Yeary, Beatrice Moore and Doris Coss; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Janice was predeceased by her father, John E. Sprague; two sisters, Eleanor Decker and Beryl McGregor; and two brothers, John Sprague and Mitchell Sprague.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 200l, at the United Methodist Church, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. George Carpenter officiating.

Burial will be in Halcottsville cemetery at a later date.

Contributions in memory of Janice Manon can be sent to the Memorial Fund of the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville, N.Y. 12455.

Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Beatrice A. Rock

STAMFORD — Beatrice A. Rock, 88, of Worcester, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001 at Robinson Terrace.

Beatrice was born March 23, 1912, in Charlotteville, the daughter of Harvey and Florence (Fox) Wilsey.

Her family moved to Tuscan, near Worcester, in 1924.

Beatrice married George L. Rock at the family homestead on Oct. 18, 1933. He died Jan. 3, 1999.

She was a farmer's wife while raising a family. Later she worked at Astrocom and in the cafeteria at Worcester Central School. After retirement she took care of her flower gardens.

Mrs. Rock was a member of the Worcester Second Baptist Church, Worcester Grange No. 1274, Pomona and State Grange and the National Grange.

Mrs. Rock is survived by her daughter, Doris Rock of Philadelphia; a son and daughter-in-law, Arnold and Sandra Rock of Worcester; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Russell; a sister, Marion Ryder; and two brothers, Cleo and Kenneth Wilsey.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday, Feb. 13, from noon to the funeral service time at 1 p.m., at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, pastor of the Worcester Second Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will take place at the Maple Grove Cemetery later in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to the Worcester Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 191, Worcester, N.Y. 12197.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Gladys M. Cerone

SCHENECTADY — Gladys M. Cerone, 76, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at Kingsway Arms Nursing Center.

Gladys was born Jan. 10, 1925, in Albany, the daughter of William and Madeline Dillenback.

She was formerly of Valley Road, in Colonie.

Gladys was educated in Albany schools. She spent her life as a housewife.

She is survived by her husband, Lewis J. Cerone; two daughters, Donna (Walter) Williams of Clifton Park and Madeline (the late Joseph) Orlando of Oneonta; three sons, Vito and Barbara Cerone of Rotterdam, Frank J. and Julie Cerone of Glenville and Lewis J. Cerone and his companion, Tracey LaForest, of Colonie; six grandchildren, Shari Cuomo, Christopher Cerone, Kimberly Shaw, Katie Marie Cerone, Hillary Cerone and Nicholas Cerone; and three great-grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her brother, William Dillenback; her sister, Barbara "Kate" Boni; and her late husband, Vito Cerone.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 14, 10 a.m., at the Demarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave., Schenectady, followed by burial at Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Colonie.

The family would prefer that all memorial contributions be made to Our Lady of Assumption Church, 3034 Ford Ave., Schenectady, N.Y. 12306, Community Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union St., Schenectady, N.Y. 12308 or to a charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements are by Demarco-Stone Funeral Home, Schenectady.

Kathryn M. Scott

SIDNEY — Kathryn Mae Scott, 83, of Sidney, passed away Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001 in Montgomery, Ohio.

She was born April 8, 1917, in Brooklyn, Pa., the daughter of the late Victor and Pearl Squirees Wilbur.

Kathryn married Edwin M. Scott on Sept. 21, 1941, in Providence, Pa. He predeceased her on Sept. 17, 1998.

Mrs. Scott had been the clerk for the village of Sidney for 30 years when she retired in 1979. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Sidney as well as the Women of the Moose #502, Sidney.

She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Edith and Calvin Moore of Cincinnati, Ohio; two nieces and their husbands, Marilyn and Jack Baity of Cayuga and Barbara and Paul Galloway of Pottstown, Pa.; three nephews and their wives, Jeffrey and Joyce Wilbur of Factoryville, Pa., Jerry and Susan Wilbur of Exeter, Pa., and James and Janet Steele of Nicholson, Pa.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Robert Pope, interim pastor of the First Congregational Church of Sidney, will officiate.

Friends may call Friday; the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad or to the First Congregational Church of Sidney.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Rebecka Webb

PITTSFIELD — Rebecka "Becky" Webb, 55, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001.

She was born Oct. 14, 1945, in Leonardsville, the daughter of Stephen Nahlik and Edith Brown.

Rebecka was married to David Webb on Feb. 20, 1965, at the United Methodist Church, New Berlin.

Rebecka attended Edmeston Central School and was a graduate of New Berlin Central School. She was a machine operator for the Kraft Dairy Group in South Edmeston. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in New Berlin.

She is survived by two sons, Gerald David Webb of Pittsfield, and Terry Charles Webb of Edmeston; a sister, Gail Bizub of Sarasota, Fla.; and two brothers, Stephen P. Nahlik of Earlville and David L. Nahlik of New Berlin.

She is predeceased by one son, Michael S. Webb, and her father, Stephen Nahlik.

Calling hours will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

The funeral will take place Tuesday, Feb. 13, at 2 p.m., at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Beverly Butler of the First United Methodist Church officiating.

Interment will take place at Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

Memorial donations may be made to the Pittsfield Emergency Squad or to the Chenango Area Hospice.

Walter Merwin

JEFFERSON — Walter (Bud) Merwin, 80, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001.

He was born Oct. 2, 1920, in Davenport, the son of Walter C. and Cornelia (Place) Merwin.

He married Louise Anderson in Cobleskill on Oct. 26, 1979. His previous marriage was to Harriet B. Walker in 1943; she predeceased him.

Mr. Merwin was a self-employed plumber in the area for many years and worked for George Pogue.

Survivors include his wife, Louise, at home in  Jefferson; a son, Steven Merwin of Oregon; two grandchildren; three sisters, Jennie Vogel of West Davenport, Eva Sutton of  Jefferson and Marion Lewis of Binghamton; and four stepchildren, Billy Miller, Viola Slater, Joyce Walker and Howard Wayman.

He was predeceased by one son, John Walter Merwin, in 1965.

Graveside services will be in the spring at Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the  Jefferson Emergency Squad or the  Jefferson Fire Department.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

William Robertson

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — William Mills Robertson, 88, passed away on Sunday evening, Feb. 11, 2001, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born on May 31, 1912, in the town of Warren, son of the late John S. and Catherine Mills Robertson.

A lifelong area resident, he was educated in Mohawk schools.

On May 31, 1936 he married Bernice Martin in the Methodist Church Parsonage, Mohawk.

Bill started out working as a farmer, then went to work for the highway department in the towns of Columbia and Warren. The last 10 years of his working career were spent with the Herkimer County Highway Department; he retired in 1974. He was an honorably discharged member of the U.S. Army National Guard.

Surviving, besides his wife, Bernice, of 64 years, are two daughters and their husbands, Shirley and Stephen Wacyk of Hatfield, Pa., and Barbara and Frank Kasprowicz of Richfield Springs; six grandchildren, Sandra Truax of Leonardsville, Kelly Stone and her husband, Jeff, of Schuyler Lake, Terry Ward and her husband, Matt, of East Herkimer, James Truax and his wife, Marleen, of Kentucky, Craig Wacyk and his wife, Ursula, of Sellersville, Pa., and Marsha Hirst and her husband, Scott, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; sixteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one brother-in-law, Joseph H. Pickett Sr. of Ilion; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, John Robertson; and four sisters, Anne Zehms, Ernily Mead, Elizabeth Tibbets and Genevieve Pickett.

The funeral service will be on Thursday at 11 a.m. in the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs. The Rev. George B. Greene, rector of St. Augustine Episcopal Church, Ilion, will officiate.

Interment will take place in Cedarville Cemetery later this spring.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Richfield Springs Emergency Rescue Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Mildred Gage

FORT PLAIN — On Feb. 10, 2001, we lost our beloved mother, grandmother and devoted friend, Mrs. Mildred Gage, 75, who passed away at her home.

She was born May 22, 1925, in Decatur, the daughter of Lorenzo and Cora (Coger) Clapper.

On June 20, 1943, she married Leslie Gage in Cherry Valley. He predeceased her July 9, 1998.

Mildred was a homemaker, a driver for The Daily Star, and a glove maker for Tops Lambskin Fashions in Chaseville.

She was one of Jehovah's Witnesses for 42 years.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Joyce Gage of Oneonta, Melvin and Pam Gage of Schenevus and Steve and Robin Gage of Fort Plain; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Elizabeth Gage of Arcadia, Fla., Valerie and Clifford Silvernail of Orlando, Fla., and Diane and Joe Hilts of Sharon Springs; twenty grandchildren; one great-grandchild; five brothers, Gordon Clapper of Altamont, David Clapper of Oxford, Ala., Claude Clapper of Canajoharie, Clark Clapper of Springfield Center and Ray George Clapper of Amsterdam; three sisters, Alta Harrington of Schenevus, Jean Handy of East Worcester and Dorothy Gage of Canajoharie.

She was predeceased by her husband and a sister, Golda Mae Coffin.

Cremation was at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at 3 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Palatine Bridge, with Mr. John Dohne of Fort Plain officiating.

There will be no public calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mildred's memory may be made to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Palatine Bridge, or the Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 North Main St., Gloversville.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Harriet E. Gesell

COOPERSTOWN — Harriet E. Gesell, 83, of East Meredith, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at Bassett Healthcare.

She was born June 4, 1917, in the town of Davenport, the daughter of George and Maribel (Shelley) Hitt.

Harriet married Wilbur M. Gesell on Oct. 28, 1940, in Oneonta. He died Dec. 28, 1996.

Harriet was a homemaker and had also assisted her late husband, Wilbur, in the operation of a dairy and crop farm on Gesell Road, near Meridale, for several years. She had been a resident of the Meridale area since 1940.

She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Sylvia Aneita Gesell of East Meredith; one brother, Ford Hitt of Norwich; one sister, Evelyn Quackenbush of Bloomville; two grandchildren, Yvonne Gesell of Unadilla and Darrell Gesell and his wife, Brenda, of East Meredith; and three great-grandchildren, Caitlyn Winfield and Jeffrey and Steven Tyler. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Gesell was predeceased by her son, Ronald Gesell, on April 1, 1994.

Funeral and committal services will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. The Rev. John Osterhout, pastor of the Meridale Community Church, will officiate.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m., when the family will be present.

Burial will be in the Ouleout Cemetery, North Franklin, in the spring of 2001.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes of Oneonta and Otego, N.Y.

Gladys Aspinwall

TAMPA, Fla. — Gladys Cook Aspinwall, 96, of Tampa, Fla., died Jan. 12, 2001, at St. Joseph's John Knox Retirement Village in Tampa.

She was born in Sidney, N.Y., the daughter of Leonard and Clara Ebert Daniels.

She was first married to Irvin Cook, in 1924. He died in 1964.

She then married Paul Aspinwall, in 1966. He died in 1985.

Gladys retired to Zephyrhills, Fla., in 1956.

Gladys is survived by one brother, Harry Daniels of Bainbridge, N.Y.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Paul, Carl and Elmer; and two sisters, Hilda and Marion.

Gladys was cremated in Florida and her cremains will be interred at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, N.Y. in the spring of 2001, when a graveside service will be held at the family's convenience.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego. N.Y.
