Evelyn DeBrock

DELHI — Evelyn DeBrock, 41, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at home.

She was born April 12, 1959.

Her occupation was housekeeping at Mountainside Adult Home in Margaretville.

Evelyn is survived by three children, Brent D. Hull of Delhi, Melinda Stiber of Roxbury and Kallie Christine Hull of Delhi; and one grandchild.

Burial will take place at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Robert L. Chapin

PITTSFIELD — Robert Low Chapin, 83, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Robert was born May 19, 1917, in New Berlin, the son of Ray and Elizabeth (Low) Chapin.

He married Frances Parker, his wife of 58 years, Oct. 24, 1942.

He attended district school and graduated from New Berlin Central School in 1936.

Robert enjoyed his job as a farmer. He was a member of the local Grange and Eastern Milk Producers organizations. He was also a former councilman for the town of Pittsfield.

Robert is survived by his wife, Frances; two daughters, Erma Runion and her husband, Steve, of Norwich and Sharon Chase and her husband, Marcelle, of Cazenovia; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Donald (Martha) Chapin; granddaughters, Stephanie English of Boston, Mass., Vanessa English of Louisville, Ky., Renee Runion of Norwich and Nicole Chase of Cazenovia; a great-granddaughter, Megan Roberta Hefferman of Boston, Mass.; and a niece and a nephew.

He is predeceased by one daughter, Roberta English; and a brother, Donald Chapin.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. following calling hours on Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at the Dakin Funeral Home. The Rev. Charles  Taylor of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, New Berlin, will be officiating.

Calling hours will take place before the funeral Friday from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Burial will be held at St. Andrew's Cemetery, New Berlin.

Contributions may be made in his memory to the Pittsfield Emergency Squad, county Road 80, New Berlin, N.Y. 13411.

Edith W. Johnston

SIDNEY — Edith W. Johnston, formerly of Hancock, died Feb. 12, 2001, at The Hospital Nursing Care Facility in Sidney, where she had been residing. She was 99.

Mrs. Johnston was born Jan. 16, 1902, in Callicoon to Richard and Dora Wormuth.

She married Harvey Johnston in 1919.

Mrs. Johnston worked as an assembler for Scintilla before her retirement.

Mrs. Johnston was a member of the Riverside Alliance Church, Walton, the Women's Relief Corps., Hancock, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion, Hancock.

She is survived by her children, Charlotte McCabe of Walton, Doris Ferrara of Sidney, Harvey Johnston of Walton and William Johnston of West Melbourne, Fla. Many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews, also survive her.

Family members who predeceased her include her husband, Harvey; her son Roscoe; and her grandson Roscoe.

Her life was celebrated at a private family service Tuesday evening at Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home, Walton.

Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery in Hancock.

Verner B. Marble

BALTIMORE, Md. — Retired Sgt. Major Verner B. Marble, 80, formerly of Oneonta, N.Y., died Feb. 7, 2001, at Baltimore, Md.

Verner was born in Milford, N.Y., and attended area schools until he entered the army in 1939.

The army was his home for the next 35 years; he retired in 1974.

Verner is survived by his wife, Gloria; two daughters, Cindy and Tammy and their husbands of Baltimore, Md.; a sister, Pearl Whiting of Maryland, N.Y.; a brother, Raymond Marble of Oneonta, N.Y.; and numerous nieces and nephews, all living in the Oneonta area.

Arrangements were made through the Louden Park Funeral Home of Baltimore, Md.

Verner will always be remembered for his quiet, good-natured ways.

Augusta L. Granger

AFTON — Augusta Lawson Granger passed away Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at her home. After a very lengthy illness with Alzheimer's disease, Gussie slipped away peacefully into the presence of the Lord, with a gentleness that matches the way she lived her life. Although the last years of her life were impacted by her illness, those around her could still sense the gentle sweetness that she always demonstrated. We will all miss Augusta, who has been a wonderful wife, mother and friend.

Augusta Thorman Dracup was the third child born to Henrietta and William Dracup in Jamestown, on Oct. 13, 1916.

Although a shy child, Gussie excelled in her creative abilities with sewing and with her musical gifts of singing and playing the flute.

In August of 1941, she married Emmett B. Lawson in Jamestown. Gussie and Emmett raised three children and were happily married until Emmett's death in 1972.

Years later she met and married William F. Granger, in 1978. Gussie and Bill had many happy times together, traveling, enjoying their grown children and entertaining at their lake home. In 1989, she and Bill moved to Afton to live closer to his family.

Gussie was very active in the Zion Covenant Church of Jamestown, where she served as a deaconess and was a member of the Dorcas Women's Club. She was quietly devoted to her Christian faith.

Gussie was educated in Jamestown, graduating from Jamestown High School in 1934. She was a graduate of Jamestown Business College. Most of her adult life was spent being a wife, mother and homemaker.

Gussie was always ready to offer her services as a volunteer in many arenas. She was an active adult member of the Chautauqua County Girl Scouts, helping their summer camp to provide meaningful recreation for girls. The Jamestown YWCA also provided Gussie with opportunities to serve on their executive board in areas of finance She served on the Ladies Auxiliary for both the WCA Hospital and Jamestown General Hospital.

Her love of flowers and gardening brought her to the Garden Club, where she was also an officer. Gussie was also a member of the Norden Women's Club.

Aside from all of Gussie's obvious community volunteer work, those who knew her were frequently touched by her gentle, efficient manner. She was always ready to provide visitors and guests with a quick meal or a quiet conversation. One always felt welcome in her home, no matter the occasion. She truly knew how to make a house a home.

Survivors include her husband, William F. Granger at their home in Afton; her children, Bruce and Cindy Lawson of Chichester, N.H., and their children, Erika and Tom Frick and Amanda Lawson, Ann Lawson of Whitefish, Mo., and her son, Shae, and Sally and Ron Lawson-Peterson of Randolph; and her brother Daniel Dracup of Forestville. Also surviving Augusta are her stepchildren, Mary Jo Granger of Aurora and her three children and one grandchild, Robert G. and Linda M. Granger of Afton and their three children and Grayson W. and Renee Granger of Summerville, S.C., and their three children.

She is predeceased by her parents; her sisters, Henrietta and Charlotte; and her brother James.

The family wishes especially to acknowledge the multitude of caregivers who have so lovingly tended to Gussie during these past years of her infirmity.

Calling hours will precede the funeral at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at the C.H Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 3 p.m.

Immediately following the funeral service, the family would like to invite family and friends to a reception at the Jericho Tavern in Bainbridge.

A memorial service is being planned for family and friends in the Jamestown area in June of this year.

Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Jamestown, on Wednesday at 1 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy for Gussie may be made to The Alzheimer's Association, 919 N. Michigan Ave, Suite 1100, Chicago, Ill. 60611.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney, and Lind Funeral Home Inc., Jamestown.

Harold G. Elsass

WORCESTER — Harold G. (Jack) Elsass, 95, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at Fox Memorial Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, Worcester.

Joseph I. Marcy

MOUNT UPTON — Joseph I. Marcy, 57, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born Feb. 5, 1944, the son of the late Joseph and Roberta (Courtney) Marcy.

He was married to Kay L. Viele on Sept. 15, 1973, in Unadilla.

Joseph was a lifelong Sidney/Mount Upton area resident. A former employee of the Job Corps in Oneonta, he was an avid fisherman, hunter, golfer and card player.

He was a member of the Unadilla Rod and Gun Club, a former member of the Sidney Rod and Gun Club, Sidney Masonic Lodge and the NRA.

He is survived by his wife, Kay L. Marcy; his daughters, Patricia Marcy of Sidney, Kaye Lynn Ricci of Lexington, N.C., and Louise Marie Marcy of Guilford; his grandchildren, Jessica and Heather Mills and Ashley, Stephanie and Dennis Bishop; and his brother-in-law and wife, Richard and Norma Viele.

He is predeceased by his brother, Bruce Marcy.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at The Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Burial will be later in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from noon until service time at 2 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are by The Westcott Funeral Home Inc., Unadilla.

Verner B. Marble

Barry F. Wood

LAURENS — There will be a memorial service for Barry F. Wood on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Laurens. The Rev. J. Stennett, pastor, will officiate.

Barry died Feb. 4, 2001, as a result of a snowmobile accident in Otego. He was the son of Frank and Toni Wood of Laurens.

Ethel I. Renwick

LAURENS — Ethel I. Renwick, 66, of Laurens, passed away Thursday morning, Feb. 15, 2001, at her residence.

She was born Sept. 11, 1934, in Charlotteville, the daughter of David and Laura (Effner) Merwin.

She married John T. Renwick on Oct. 10, 1975, in Davenport.

She was of the Methodist faith.

Over the years, Ethel, along with raising her eight children and three stepchildren, operated an Atlantic service station in Oneonta as well as a used-car dealership in Davenport Center.

For years she operated an area flea market, for which she gained recognition as a skilled buyer and seller of antiques.

She is survived by her husband, John T. Renwick Sr. of Laurens; her children and their spouses, Patricia Ostrander of Oneonta, Dorothy and Jerry Tooley of Davenport, David and Mary Ostrander Jr. of  Jefferson, Daniel Ostrander of Binghamton, Douglas and Kathy Ostrander of Saltspringville, Anthony Ostrander of Roanoke, Va., Jody Ostrander of Delhi and John and Amanda Renwick Jr. of Laurens; her stepchildren and their spouses, Dorraine and Dale Young of Otego, Debra Renwick of Otego and Thomas and Barbara Renwick of Westville; 22 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and her brothers and sisters, David Merwin Jr. of Charlotteville, William Merwin of  Jefferson, Alice Morrell of Richmondville, Anna Hollenbeck of Sloansville and Elizabeth Pitt of Delhi. She is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins,

She was predeceased by her sisters Shirley Bonney, Jenette Stevens and Lucille Pitt.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at 1 p.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Harry G. Myers, pastor of the Laurens Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Burial will be in the spring in the Laurens Cemetery, Laurens.

Friends may call Monday at the Lester R, Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, from 7 to 9 p.m., at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Harold G. Elsass

MARYLAND — Harold George (Jack) Elsass, 95, a resident at the Ross Adult Home in Maryland and formerly of Worcester, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born June 6, 1905, in Albuquerque, N.M., the son of George and Nellie (Harbaugh) Elsass.

He married Emilie VanZandt on Aug. 12, 1931, in Schenectady. She predeceased him on July 20, 1999.

Mr. Elsass received his bachlor's degree in 1925 from Park College in Parkville, Mo. He then was employed by General Electric from 1928 to 1932. Mr. Elsass was a schoolteacher for a total of 381/2 years, nine years at the Maryland Union Free School, four years at Schenevus Central School and 251/2 years at Worcester Central School. In 1949 he received his master's degree from Albany State. He retired from teaching in 1972.

Mr. Elsass was active in the Boy Scouts of America for many years. He was the past president of the Worcester Fire Department, past president of the Worcester Teachers Association and past president and member of the Worcester Rotary Club.

He is survived by two nieces, Jean Kachoris of Detroit, Mich., and Carolyn Yates of Marshfield, Mo.; two nephews, Stuart Elsass of Missouri and Oliver V. Hall and his wife, Phila, of Maryland; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, Ralph Elsass.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co. in Worcester.

A graveside service will be held at the Maryland Cemetery later in the spring,

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Worcester Fire Department, c/o Roy Althiser, 26 Brookside Ave., Worcester, N.Y. 12197.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Alice Mildred Nellis

SCHENEVUS — We'd like to say fare-thee-well to Great, Great Aunt Alice.

Alice Mildred Nellis came into this world on July 1, 1900. Born on a farm in Hauppauge, Long Island, weighing in at 1 whole pound. She was kept alive on a stone fireplace, which served as an incubator.

The youngest and last survivor of 11 now joins her parents and her 10 brothers and sisters.

Without writing a book, we can surely say she has always been there for all generations. We
love you and we'll miss you — Donna, Diane, Douglas, Darial Dee and Dean Drysdale and Paul Klein and their many children.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.
