Douglas M. Hovey

SIDNEY — Douglas M. Hovey, 73, of Sidney, died unexpectedly Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was employed as an electroplater at Bendix Corp., which is now Amphenol Corp., for 32 years. He also owned and operated Hovey Equipment, an outdoor-power-equipment business, for many years.

He was born in Guilford and lived most of his life in the town of Unadilla.

He served in the United States Army from 1946 to 1948, most of that time in Germany.

He was a member of the Fagan Flyers.

Mr. Hovey is survived by his wife of 53 years, Irmgard M. Hovey of Sidney; his daughters, Shirley Duval and her husband, Stephen, of Escondido,  Calif., and Sheryl Hovey and her husband, Jeff Feldmesser, of Oakton, Va.; and three grandchildren.

At the request of Mr. Hovey, there will be no calling hours or formal services. A private burial will be held later at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Steven Koren Jr.

MIDDLEFIELD — Mr. Steven Koren Jr., 18, passed away Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Steven was born May 17, 1982, the son of Steven and Ruthann (Zupo) Koren of Middlefield.

Steven attended Cherry Valley-Springfield School, lived at home and loved to play baseball.

He was employed by the Doubleday Cafe in Cooperstown.

Steven will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends.

He is survived by his parents, Steven and Ruthann (Zupo) Koren of Middlefield; his fiance, Kimberly Couse of Portlandville; one half brother, Michael A. Zupo of Cooperstown; two half sisters, Donna M. Koren of Otego and Stephanie J. Koren of Cherry Valley; one sister, Denise M. Koren of Middlefield; his grandmother Betty L. Koren of Middlefield; his great-grandmother, LuLu M. Day of Laurens; his grandmother Helen F. Zupo of Milford; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Steven was predeceased by his grandfather Stanley L. Koren; his grandfather Michael Zupo; an uncle, Michael D. Zupo; and an aunt, Alecia M. Griffin.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Helen Pust

COOPERSTOWN — Helen Pust of Cooperstown died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, in the Clark Burn Unit of Syracuse University Hospital.

She was born May 9, 1920, in Brooklyn, a daughter of Louis and Mary (Curl) Pust.

Before living in Cooperstown, Miss Pust was employed by the Credit Bureau of Greater New York. In Cooperstown, she was employed at Bassett Healthcare in the billing department.

She was a communicant of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, where she was a Eucharistic minister. She was also very active as a volunteer of the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital Auxiliary and a fund-raiser for the Red Cross. Her other activities included volunteer work at the Farmers' Museum and the Glimmerglass Opera.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Evelyn Yankovich of Schenectady; a brother, Richard Post of East Brunswick, N.J.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, with the Rev. John Rosson, pastor, officiating.

Calling hours will be on Saturday, Feb. 24, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when the family will be in attendance.

Interment will be at a later date in the family plot in Cherry Valley.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mary Imogene Bassett Tribute Fund, care of Jack Thompson, 1 Atwell Rd., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326, or the American Heart Association, 59 Court St., 4th Floor, Binghamton, N.Y. 13901.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Lewis 'Fritz' Backus

BAINBRIDGE — Lewis R. "Fritz" Backus, 72, of Bainbridge, died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at Wilson Memorial Hospital,  Johnson City.

He was born July 25, 1928, in Cannonsville, son of the late Arthur and Katherine Short Backus.

Fritz served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.

He married Helen Frank on July 15, 1951, in Bainbridge.

Fritz was employed as an inspector for E.C.D. of Bendix, Sidney, when he retired, in 1989.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Fritz also supplied many people in the area with firewood.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Helen Backus of Bainbridge; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Theodore and Marilyn Backus of Anchorage, Alaska, and Frank Backus of Bainbridge; one daughter and son-in-law, Lee and Everett Brown of Bainbridge; three grandchildren, Joyce Brown of Charleston, S.C., Bill Brown of Mount Upton and Justin Backus of Anchorage, Alaska; three sisters, Isabel Walley of Deposit, Margaret Ford of Afton and Veda Walley of Sidney.

Six brothers and four sisters predecease him.

Graveside committal services will be held in Glenwood Cemetery, Afton, in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bainbridge Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

George Merwin

DAVENPORT — George Merwin, 86, born Jan. 8, 1915, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was a lifelong resident of Delaware County. George and his wife, Josephine, who predeceased him, operated a farm in East Meredith from 1949 until 1966.

He is survived by his two sons, Owen of East Meredith and Douglas of Davenport; two brothers, Kenny of Harpersfield and Irving of  Jefferson; a sister, Elizabeth Bonney of Schenectady; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the William A. Tari Funeral Home, 40 Main St. (corner of Liberty Street), Stamford, today from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Feb. 23, at 1 p.m.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari

Austina Coon-Maxson

ONEONTA — Austina Coon-Maxson, 88, formerly of Homer, died on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta, where she had resided since 1995.

She was born May 3, 1912, in Cortland, the daughter of Clair and Ethyl (Brown) Barber, and had been a lifelong resident of Homer before relocating to Oneonta to be closer to her family.

Austina was a longtime and active member of the Scott United Methodist Church and a former member of the Cortland County Republican Party and the Rebekah Lodge #147, Scott.

She was employed for several years as a cook at Leonard's Coffee Shop in Homer.

Surviving are a daughter, Shirley J. (James) Campbell of Milford; a son, Alfred E. (Nancy) Coon of Scott; her son-in-law, Richard  White Sr. of Scott; and a brother-in-law, Malcolm (Dorothy) Coon of Scott. Also surviving are seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, Austina was predeceased by her first husband, Gauis C. Coon; her second husband, Minturn L. Maxson; a daughter, Mrs. Arlene  White; and two sisters, Cora Anderson and Lucy Wadsworth.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. at the Donald L. Barber Funeral Home Inc., 5016 North Main St., Homer, with the Rev. John Kloetfer officiating. Interment will be in Atwater Cemetery, Homer, when the weather permits.

In keeping with Austina's wishes, there are no calling hours.

Memorial contributions in her name may be directed to the Scott United Methodist Church, 6816 state Route 41, Homer, N.Y. 13077.

Helen R. Brady

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Helen Ryan Brady, 92, of Lake Street, passed away on Thursday morning, Feb. 22, 2001, in her home.

She was born on March 6, 1908, in Danbury, Conn., daughter of the late Frank P. and Elizabeth Walsh Ryan.

Helen was raised in Danbury, graduated from Danbury High School and Danbury Norman School.

On Oct. 26, 1935, she married Owen P. Brady Jr., in St. Francis of Assisi Church, New York City. It was a loving and devoted union of 64 years until his passing on Jan. 11, 1999.

For 14 years she was the assistant librarian for the Richfield Springs Elementary School Library, retiring in 1977.

She had a strong belief in God and lived a devoted Catholic life. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs. She also belonged to the Richfield Springs Garden Club. Her favorite pastime was playing bridge, and she belonged to three bridge clubs in Richfield Springs.

Surviving her are two sons, Michael E. Brady of Carlsbad,  Calif., and O. Patrick and his wife, Hope Brady, of Loudonville; two daughters, Carol and her husband, John "Pete"' Clark, of Brewster, Mass., and Kathleen Brady Steckloff of Jacksonville, Fla.; one daughter-in-law, Barbara Brady of Syracuse; a sister, Katherine Hanford of Lakeworth, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, Owen, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and Harold Ryan.

The family will be present to receive relatives and friends at the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, today from 6 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs. The Rev. Terrance Healy will officiate. Interment in St. Joseph's Cemetery will be later this spring.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Memphis, Tenn. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Helen R. Weber

HARTWICK — Helen R. Weber, 88, of Hartwick, died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, in Astor, Fla.

She was born Aug. 16, 1912, in Brooklyn, the daughter of William and Rose (Langan) Rooney.

She married Robert Weber on Feb. 5, 1938. He predeceased her Oct. 17, 1978.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Helene and Robert Sellick of Hartwick; a brother-in-law, Charlie Dunne of Worcester; two nieces, Mrs. Patricia Fiederer and her husband, Herbert, of Worcester and Mrs. Regina Peterson of Venice, Fla.; and a nephew, William Dunne and his wife, Ann, of Worcester.

She was predeceased by her sister, Rose Dunne.

Mrs. Weber was a past nobel grand with the Rebeckah Lodge in Hartwick. She enjoyed reading, traveling and camping.

A graveside service will be held at the Schenevus Cemetery at a later date.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Martha H. Mosier

ONEONTA — Mrs. Martha H. Mosier, 85, of Oneonta, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady.

She was born Feb. 2, 1916, in Bronx, the daughter of Julius and Helga (Nielsen) Nelson.

On Feb. 2, 1963, Martha married Donald D. "Pete" Mosier at the parsonage of the Old Lutheran Church in Oneonta. Mr. Mosier died Sept. 18, 1977.

Martha was the director of the Purchasing Department at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, retiring after 27 years of service on March 1, 1979.

For 48 years she lived in East Meredith and moved to the Oneonta area in June 1996.

She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend who will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Richard T. and Charlotte Pedersen of Norcross, Ga., Peter J. and Lorina Pedersen of Plattsburgh and Norma Hawley of DeLancey; six grandchildren, Erika Riordan of Chicago, Ill., Victoria Oblinski of West Laurens, Martha Bordenger of Richmondville, Jonathan Hawley of DeLancey and Michael and Lorie Pedersen of Plattsburgh; two nieces and one nephew; and several great-nieces and

-nephews.

Martha was predeceased by her 3-year-old brother and a sister, Ellen Olsen.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at 3 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. Deacon Laura Roper will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in the spring at the East Meredith Cemetery, East Meredith.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Daryl W. Young

GILBOA — Daryl W. Young, 43, passed away Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Albany Medical Center following a strong and courageous three-year battle with silicosis.

Daryl was born March 22, 1957, in Stamford Hospital, the son of Helen Young and Moses Gideon Young.

Daryl graduated from the Gilboa-Conesville Central School in 1975, after which he began a career in the field of construction. He was very knowledgeable and experienced in many aspects of the field as a result of diversified employment, including tunnel construction in  Washington D.C. Through the years, Daryl had been employed by various companies, finally finding a home with Metzger Construction of Wappingers Falls, where he had been a dedicated employee for the past 12 years.

Upon his passing, Daryl is survived by three children, Jason, Jennifer and Amanda, and his granddaughter Destiny, all of Gilboa. He is also survived by four brothers, Gary, Dewey, Mark and Steve of Gilboa; two sisters, Barbara Risley of Delanson and Patricia Le Viness of Evans, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews.

Daryl was dearly loved by family and friends and will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

Friends may call at the William A. Tari Funeral Home, 40 Main St. (corner of Liberty Street), Stamford, on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, from 1 to 3 p.m. Services will follow immediately at 3 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Martha Vink officiating.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Bridget P. Donnelly

DELHI — Bridget Philomena Donnelly, 95, of Sara's Senior Care, South Kortright, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

She was born Nov. 1, 1905, in Ireland, daughter of the late Michael and Bridget Gilroy.

Bridget married Patrick Donnelly on April 30, 1931, in New York City. He predeceased her.

The Donnelly's owned and operated the Donnelly Bar and Restaurant in North Salem.

She is survived by a daughter, Margaret McNally of Sidney; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

A son, Michael F.; a daughter, Joan Theresa; six brothers; and six sisters predeceased her.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz officiating. Friends may call Monday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Burial will be in St. Lawrence O'Toole Cemetery in Brewster.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Church.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Harold Eastwood

GILBERTSVILLE — Harold L. Eastwood, 80, longtime resident of Guilford and Gilbertsville, and most recently of the Extended Care Facility of Community Memorial Hospital, Hamilton, passed away Thursday afternoon, Feb. 22, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital, New Hartford.

Born in Guilford, Harold spent his early years in that area, and worked for Dexheimer's Moving of Guilford before entering the military. He served his country in the United States Army from 1942 until his discharge in 1945. Returning home, he began a long career with Bendix of Sidney, working as a machinist, and retiring in 1983 after 35 years of service.

Harold was a member of American Legion Post 1339 of Gilbertsville for many years, and spent several years working as a substitute mail carrier in Mount Upton.

In 1949, Harold married Marion Carpenter, who predeceased him in 1994.

He lived in Gilbertsville from 1960 until 1996, when his health required him to move to the extended-care facility in Hamilton.

Born May 29, 1920, Harold was the son of Earl and Iva (Aldrich) Eastwood.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Kathy and Gary Fitch of Oxford, Joan and Keith Reihl of Sherburne, Harold E. Eastwood of Eaton and Norman and Linda Eastwood of Gilbertsville. Twelve grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins, also survive.

Harold was pre-deceased by his brothers, Francis and Kenneth Eastwood.

Funeral services for Harold will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at 10 a.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. Chaplain Nelson Park, chaplain of Fox Hospital of Oneonta, will officiate.

Interment will be at a later date in the Pioneer Cemetery of North Guilford.

Friends may call at the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home on Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to one's favorite charity.
