Clarence D. Palmer

NORWICH — Clarence D. Palmer, 77, of Locust Street, Norwich, formerly of the Oneonta and Franklin areas, passed away Tuesday evening, Feb. 27, 2001, in Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

Born in Oneonta, Clarence grew up in the Franklin area and attended the Franklin school. Following his schooling, he worked for a brief period for the Scintilla in Sidney before entering the military. He served his country in the Navy during World War II, from 1942 until 1945, when he was honorably discharged.

Returning home, he returned to work for the Scintilla and subsequently worked at the West End Body Shop in Oneonta.

Eventually Clarence and his wife bought a farm in  Jefferson that was small and run down; through their hard work over the years, they turned the farm into a very productive and prosperous dairy, which they ran for more than 20 years.

Following the sale of the farm, Clarence and his wife moved to Florida for a short time, but returned to Oneonta and eventually moved to Norwich, 12 years ago.

A man who really wasn't into retirement, Clarence enjoyed the outdoors, liked his hunting and fishing and was content to tinker around his home.

Born Dec. 30, 1923, in Oneonta, Clarence was the son of Clarence and Agnes (Eckert) Palmer.

On Jan. 14, 1945, in Oneonta, he married Mary Drake, who survives. Also surviving are his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Leslie and Kay Drake of Otego, Ivan Drake of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Florence Robinson of Otego.

Clarence was predeceased by his sister, Barbara Palmer.

Funeral services for Clarence will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Calvary Baptist Church of Norwich. The Rev. William Chapman and the Rev. Brian Conover, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church, will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in the Mount Hope Cemetery of Norwich. Friends may call at the R.J.
