Mildred Whitaker

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Mildred Whitaker of Cooperstown died Friday afternoon, March 2, 2001, at Bassett Healthcare.

Mildred Weeks was born on Aug. 3, 1905, in the village of Hartwick. Her parents were John Z. Weeks, a mechanical engineer, and May Lake Weeks, a dressmaker. Millie was the youngest child in her family, having two older sisters, Catherine and Anna May, and an older brother, Edwin.

The Weeks family lived in what is known as the  White House on Route 205. It was a roadhouse where stagecoaches would stop and change horses. On the route between Binghamton and Albany, following Otego Creek, passengers would have a meal or spend the night. Mildred's grandmother Donaldson, and Jerry Ellsworth's great-grandmother were sisters, and they grew up in the  White House. Just down the road from their house was the one-room schoolhouse, District School number 3, that Mildred and her brother and sisters attended. The stove that used to heat the schoolhouse is now at the Farmers' Museum.

At the end of World War I, Mildred's sister Catherine and brother, Edwin, found employment in Cooperstown. Her father was also working in Cooperstown, and so in the interest of keeping the family close and affording the younger children the opportunity to attend high school in town, the Weeks family moved to Cooperstown in 1917.

Millie enjoyed school and did well in math. Her math teacher, Helen Hale, said she could tell the students who came from district schools because they knew their arithmetic very well. As a teen, Mildred picked hops and remembers sitting down for meals with 30 or 40 hop-pickers at a time.

Dr. Mary Imogene Bassett was Mildred's doctor.

Esther McNellan, later Munford, was one of Mildred's schoolmates.

Mildred met Ernest Whitaker in high school. They dated, and they were married on Sept. 6, 1924. Although she didn't graduate with her class, Mildred received her certificate of completion of high school. The young couple lived on Walnut Street in Cooperstown, and Ernest worked at the Clark Gymnasium, achieving the position of Assistant Director. Mildred worked doing bookkeeping, first for Derrick Florist and later for Bundy & Cruttenden, both in Cooperstown.

The Whitakers raised two children. Their daughter, Alice, was born in 1925, and their son, Ernest, was born in 1935.

In the 1930s Mildred and her husband operated a grocery store on Chestnut Street across from the old high school (where the Cooper Lane Apartments are now). They ran the store for more than 15 years.

During World War II, Mildred worked for the Office of Price Administration (OPA). Following the war she served as secretary for Walter Littell, who wrote Alternate Opinion Editorials for the Freeman's Journal and Otsego Farmer.

Then for 25 years she served in the acquisitions department of the Baseball Hall of Fame as secretary to Ernest S. Lenigan, the museum historian. At the museum, she came in contact with many of baseball's immortals.

Mildred volunteered at Bassett Hospital for many years, was a longtime member of the Christ Episcopal Church of Cooperstown where she served in the nursery for many years, a member of the Cooperstown Women's Club, a member of the Otsego-Hartwick Chapter #201 Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Hartwick Senior Citizens.

She enjoyed knitting and sewing, reading, playing bridge and flowers and plants.

Besides her two children, Mildred is survived by six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four nephews.

A memorial service will be held later in the spring at the Christ Episcopal Church of Cooperstown.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
