Veronica Butler

HOBART — Veronica (Vera) Butler, 91, of Hobart, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Jan. 29, 1910, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Thomas and Bridget (Harrison) Butler.

Vera lived in Elizabeth, N.J., for 72 years. For 40 years she taught elementary education for the Elizabeth School System; she held a bachelor's degree from Newark State Teachers College and a masters degree in education from Rutgers University. She was a member of the New Jersey Retired Educators Association and several organizations of Saint Genevieve's RC Church, Elizabeth.

She relocated to the Hobart area in 1993. Vera's great affection for the South Kortright/Hobart/Stamford area is evident in the establishment of three separate charitable trusts, each directed to the betterment of the greater Hobart community.

In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to either the "Butler Christmas Feeling Fund" or the "Butler Fund for South Kortright Schools," care of Mrs. Evelyn Goodspeed, NBT Bank, Box H, Hobart, N.Y. 13788.

Miss Butler is survived by Patrick Ryan and Colm Ryan of Hobart; a cousin, Sister Margaret Harrison, Sparkhill; and a niece, Elizabeth Wilbert of Pompton Plains.

A cousin, Maureen Ryan, and three brothers and three sisters predeceased her.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 9, 2001, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Stamford, with the Rev. Fr. Anthony Ligato as the celebrant. Calling hours will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. Burial will be in the spring at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Apolonia Duran

GILBOA — Mrs. Apolonia Duran, 89, of Bull Hill Road, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at the home of her daughter in Mesa, Ariz.

Mrs. Duran was born in Shenandoah, Pa., on Feb. 15, 1912, a daughter of John and Mary Feler Domanski.

She was the widow of Michael J. Duran Sr., who died Feb. 25, 1999.

She was a communicant of St. Catherine's Church in Middleburgh.

Surviving Mrs. Duran are her daughters, Deanna Flynn of Fountain Hills, Ariz., and Barbara Bailey of Mesa, Ariz.; a son, Michael James Duran of Derwood, Md.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 3, 2001, at St. Catherine's Church, Main Street, Middleburgh. The Rev. Fr. Thomas Holmes will be celebrant. Burial will be in Middleburgh Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Catherine's Church, Main Street, Middleburgh, N.Y. 12122.

Funeral arrangements are by the Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, Middleburgh, and the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, Cobleskill.

Helen M.  White

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Helen M.  White, 87, of Cooperstown, died Wednesday night, March 7, 2001, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born on Dec. 14, 1913, in Owego, a daughter of Leon and Eva Legge Marble.

She married Daniel M.  White on Oct. 13, 1945, in Owego. Mr.  White died on Oct. 7, 1972.

Raised in Owego, Helen graduated from the Owego Free Academy on June 26, 1933.

She was first employed as a waitress at the Green Lantern near Owego and later worked for IBM during its early years. In 1945, she and her husband moved to an area outside of Bainbridge and then, in 1950, moved to Cooperstown, where she was employed for many years as a secretary for the 4-H Division of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Otsego County.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, where she sang in the choir and was active in the women's guild. A longtime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, she became a member of Owego Chapter No. 519, O.E.S., in 1942 and served as Matron in 1945. She transferred her membership to the Otsego-Hartwick Chapter No. 201, O.E.S., in Cooperstown on Dec. 10, 1952, and remained an active member of this chapter until her death. In April of 2000, she was awarded her 50-year membership pin.

Helen is survived by her son, Edwin J.  White, Major United States Air Force Reserve (Retired), and his wife, Enid K.  White, of Salisbury, Md.; two grandsons, Bryan D.  White and Christopher J.  White, both of Salisbury, Md.; one brother-in-law, Paul Hammond, of Florida; five nieces, Paula Britton of Florida, Lori Reedy of Raleigh, N.C., Wendy Swatling of Elmira, Susan Karlsen of Brockport and Linda Warfle of Florida; and two nephews, Kevin Marble of Vermont and Larry Marble of Florida.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 10, 2001, at the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas M. Deer, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery. An Eastern Star service will be conducted by members of the Otsego-Hartwick Chapter No. 201, Order of the Eastern Star, during the funeral service at the church on Saturday morning. Helen's family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time on Saturday morning in the Prayer Room at the church. Immediately following the services on Saturday morning, all attending are invited to join Helen's family for a time of food and fellowship in the Fellowship Hall at the church.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the American Heart Association, Heart Gifts Processing Center, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, N.Y. 13220-3049 or the American Diabetes Association, New York State Memorial Processing Center, P.O. Box 31160, Hartford, Conn. 06150-1160.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Harriett E. Stevens

ANDES — Harriett Elizabeth Titch Moore Stevens, 71, a housewife, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

Harriett was born on Beech Hill, Andes, on Aug. 8, 1929, to Florence and Leland Titch.

She graduated in 1947, from Andes as the valedictorian of her class. She attended nursing school in Binghamton.

She married Jerry Moore of Afton in April 1949; he predeceased her in a tragic accident in May 1949. She married Leonard Stevens in 1955; he currently resides in their home on Tremperskill Road, Andes.

Harriett was an avid gardener, craftsman and hunter, as well as a housewife and loving mother and grandmother.

Surviving besides her husband, Leonard, are three daughters, Florence Brundege of Walton, Harriett Gardner of Downsville and Rosemary Gladding of Oneonta; three sons, Leonard Stevens Jr. of Poughquag, Harvey Stevens of Massachusetts and Timothy Stevens of Walton; two sisters, Helen Nichols of Walton and Maude Finkle of Andes; 12 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 11, 2001, where the family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. (one hour before the service). Burial will be in the Afton Cemetery at a later date.

Arthur F. Earl

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. — Arthur F. Earl, 45, of 1530 Main St., Collegeville, Pa., and formerly of Afton, N.Y., passed away unexpectedly Thursday, March 1, 2001, at his residence in  Pennsylvania.

Arthur was born Feb. 1, 1956, in Sidney, N.Y., the son of Robert and Charlene Harris Earl.

He was employed by Baker Installation of McMurray, Pa.

He is survived by his mother, Charlene Earl of Sidney; a sister and brother-in-law, Karen Earl-Braymer and Thomas Braymer of Allentown, Pa.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ted and Carol Earl of Afton and Dennis and Nancy Earl of Wells Bridge, N.Y. Also surviving are several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

His father, Robert Earl, and paternal grandparents, Stanley and Clara Earl, predeceased him.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 17, 2001, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Burial will be at his family's convenience in the Sand Hill Cemetery, Wells Bridge.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the American Heart Association if desired.

Joan Davidson

CROSSVILLE, Tenn. — Joan Davidson died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at her home in Crossville, Tenn.

She was born in Plymouth, England, the daughter of Frederick Websdell and the late Carol Websdell.

She was retired from the Dallas,  Texas, district attorney's office.

Survivors in addition to her father of Myrtle Beach, S.C., include her husband, Gary Davidson of Crossville; a son, Robert Scott Van Zandt of Oneonta, N.Y.; two daughters, Tanya Pondolfino of Clearwater, Fla., and Yana Olive of Oneonta; two sisters, Deanna Keith of Myrtle Beach and Shirley Greenman of Aynor; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, March 12, 2001, at McMillan-Small Funeral Home, with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cumberland County, P.O. Box 542, Crossville, Tenn., 38557.

Marian Coons

ONEONTA — Marian Ida Coons, 84, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Nursing Home, Oneonta, after a lengthy illness.

Born March 25, 1916, in Stamford, N.Y., she was the daughter of Howard and Ella (Hoffman) Coons.

Marian was a resident of Oneonta for most of her life. In her earlier years she was employed at the Oneonta Glove Co. Later she became clerk/manager at R.E. Brigham Jeweler until her retirement in 1978.

Marian was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oneonta.

She is survived by a stepsister, Mrs. Darrell (Mabel) Myers of Port Ewen, N.Y.; a half sister, Marjorie Higgins and her husband, William, of Oneonta; two half brothers, Howard and his wife, Dolores, of Oneonta, and Robert and his wife, Betty, of Bowie, Md.; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and cousins.

There will be no calling hours.

The funeral service will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Burial will be at the Stamford cemetery.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home of Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

John Thomas Jr.

GILBOA — John Thomas, Jr., 60, of RD Gilboa, N.Y., passed away suddenly at the Bassett Hospital in Cobleskill, N.Y., on Thursday, March 8, 2001.

He was born in Manhattan, N.Y., on April 28, 1940, son of Frances Pekar Thomas and the late John Thomas Sr.

He was a former Plumber for O.S.I. Oil Service of Long Island.

Surviving are his mother, Frances Thomas, of RD Gilboa; three daughters, Vicky Thomas of Roxbury, N.Y., and Melisa and Jaline Thomas of Long Island; two sons, John and Peter Thomas of Long Island; 15 grandchildren; and a sister, Gertrude DeCesar.

He was predeceased by a son, Victor Thomas; and a sister, Jesse Vota.

Funeral services will be Saturday, at 7 p.m., from the Cunningham Funeral Home in Greenville, N.Y.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, before the service.

Spring interment will be in the Manorkill Cemetery.

Thomas Tamburro

UNADILLA — Thomas Tamburro, 67, of Parker Hollow Road, Unadilla, N.Y, died Friday, March 9, 2001, at The Hospital, Sidney, N.Y.

He was born May 21, 1933, in Jersey City, N.J., the son of Lardie and Clara (Ruff) Tamburro.

Thomas was a retired pipefitter with Local Union #274 of Ridgefield, N.J.

He was a former resident of Woodcliff, N.J., and a resident of the Unadilla area since 1990.

He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

Thomas is survived by his wife, Betty Tamburro of Unadilla; his mother, Clara Tamburro of Cresskill, N.J.; his sons, Thomas Tamburro of Waldwick, N.J., Michael Tamburro of Golden,  Colo., David Tamburro of Mount Holley, N.J., and Daniel Tamburro of Parkridge, N.J.; his daughter, Debra Grisler of Riverdale, N.J.; a brother, Alfred Tamburro of Cresskill, N.J.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 12, 2001, at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla, N.Y., with the Rev. Gordon A. Polenz, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, officiating.

Burial will be later in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call at the funeral home, Sunday, March 11, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Clarence Wilsey Sr.

JEFFERSON — Clarence L. Wilsey Sr., 80, died Friday, March 9, 2001, at his home in  Jefferson.

He was born Oct. 3, 1920, in  Jefferson, the son of Alvero and Cora (Eighmey) Wilsey.

Clarence was a United States Navy veteran, serving in World War II. He attained the rank of Seaman First Class.

Clarence was employed for the Town of Harpersfield for several years and was a self-employed logger.

Clarence was a member of the American Legion in Delhi. His CB handle was "Black Cat."

He is survived by his children, Don and his wife, Karen Wilsey, of Sharon Springs, Paul and his wife, Maureen Wilsey, of Cobleskill, Marion and her husband, Robert Chapman, of Tolland, Conn., Bob and his wife, Cathy Miller, of Sharon Springs, Betty Kinard of Cherry Valley, Blanch and her husband, Chuck Duncan, of Tennessee, Harry and his wife, Mary Rode, of Richmondville, Clarence Wilsey Jr. of Cherry Valley, Marshal "Mickey" Wilsey of Richmondville, Brenda Wilsey of Davenport, and Kelly and her husband, Jurgen Reichenberger, of Esperance; many grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; his lifelong friend, Judy Hamilton, of  Jefferson; two brothers, Veron "Shorty" Wilsey of Oneonta and Ralph Wilsey of Worcester; three sisters, Margaret Cannon of Oneonta, Clara Vitch of Arizona, and Dorothy Strobeck of Arizona; and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at the funeral chapel, with the Rev. Alan Miller, pastor of the First Christian Church of South Valley, officiating.

Burial with military honors will be held at the Summit Cemetery later in the spring.

Contributions may be made in loving memory to the Catskill Area Hospice, 1 MacAurthur Ave., Cobleskill, N.Y. 12043.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Wanda S. Battin

MOUNT UPTON — Wanda S. Battin, 69, of Creek-Fred Smith Road, Mount Upton, passed away at her residence Sunday morning, March 11, 2001.

She was born Sept. 27, 1931, in East Meredith, the daughter of the late Benjamin and Florence Decker Shelley.

Wanda married Mark Battin on Aug. 31, 1951. He survives.

Wanda graduated from Sidney High School in the Class of 1948 and continued her education in Syracuse, for public accounting. For the past 51 years, Mrs. Battin served the people of the Tri-Town area in the field of public accounting.

Her primary concerns in life were her family, friends and clients. She was raised in the Sidney United Methodist Church. Wanda was a member of Kiwanis International and a charter member of the Tri-County Kiwanis Club. She served her local club as a president and secretary. Other memberships included the Women of The Moose Chapter 502, Sidney.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Mark Battin of Mount Upton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Arnold and Ann Battin of Pinole,  Calif., and Alan and Melanie Battin of Unadilla; a daughter, Sheri Sutton of Sidney; two granddaughters, Brittany Sutton and Elizabeth Battin; a grandson, Nicholas Battin; a sister-in-law, Charlotte Battin of Dover, Del.; and a son-in-law, Norman Sutton; three nieces, Romona Boice of Poultney, Vt., Teresa Searles of Unadilla and Candy Osmundsen of Dover, Del.; and a nephew, Eric Battin of Dover, Del.

A sister, Beatrice Nichols, predeceased her.

Services will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday evening from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the Sidney United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will held at the convenience of her family in the East Guilford Cemetery, East Guilford. Friends are invited to call at their convenience Tuesday at the funeral chapel. The family will be in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Mount Upton Emergency Squad and the Fire Department, Mount Upton.

Chester T. Lavrik

FRANKLIN — Chester T. Lavrik, 66, of Franklin, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born Aug. 20, 1934, in Brooklyn, the son of George and Viola (Narkin) Lavrik.

He married Loretta Kirkpatrick on May 20, 1961, in Queens.

Chet served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and was discharged in 1957, as an Electrician's Mate 3rd class.

For a period of 32 years, retiring in 1990, he was employed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, assigned to Kennedy Airport.

Since 1976, Chet and his family spent their summers in Franklin and in 1996 moved here permanently.

He was a member of the Treadwell Fire Department. While living in the Long Island area, he was a member of Maria Regina Roman Catholic Church of Seaford and a life member of the North Massapequa Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife, Loretta Lavrik of Franklin; his children and their spouses, Elaine Lavrik of North Massapequa, Lisa and Edward Spradley of Bay Shore, and Gregory and Barbara Lavrik of Massapequa; and his five grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Adele and Richard Saxton of Port Charlotte, Fla., and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Wednesday, March 14, 2001, in the Maria Regina R.C. Church, Seaford, Long Island, at 9:45 a.m. Burial will be in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale.

Friends are invited to call at the William E. Law Funeral Home Inc., 1 Jerusalem Ave., Massapequa, on Tuesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.
