Elsie E. Wheat

HAMDEN — Elsie E. Wheat, 99, a longtime Hamden resident, passed away Friday night, March 9, 2001, at Countryside Care Center, Delhi, where she had been a resident since November.

She was born June 18, 1901, in the town of Colchester, the daughter of George H. and Alice P. (Hunter) Bull.

A graduate of Downsville High School and the last surviving member of the Class of 1922, Elsie received her teacher training at Oneonta Normal School and subsequently taught for two years at Upper Gregory Hollow School, Downsville, before her marriage to Irving H. Wheat on Oct. 1, 1924, at her family's home.

The couple moved to Hamden in 1927, where they later purchased a dairy farm on Basin Clove Road, which they operated for many years. Mr. Wheat died Jan 9, 1977.

A longtime active member of the DeLancey United Presbyterian Church and the Women's Christian Temperance Union, Elsie will be remembered for her steadfast spiritual faith.

Surviving are five sons, the Rev. George D. Wheat of Grand Island, Neb., Ralph I. Wheat of Rocky Ford,  Colo., the Rev. Gerald R. Wheat of Arlington, Va., Bruce E. Wheat, presently residing at the Countryside Care Center, and Carlton R. Wheat, at home in Hamden; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Erma Hathaway of Barton, Vt.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a son, Donald C. Wheat, in 1944.

Friends are invited to call Friday, March 16, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home at 2 p.m. Saturday by her sons, the Revs. George and Gerald Wheat and the Rev. Joe Bokel, chaplain of the Countryside Care Center. Burial will be later in the family plot in Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Contributions may be made to the DeLancey U.P. Church Basement Fund.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

Irma G. Pierce

WALTON — Irma G. Pierce, a lifelong resident of Walton, died on Friday, March 9, 2001, at Delaware Valley Hospital. She was 66.

Mrs. Pierce was a farm wife who also had worked for the Delaware County ASCS office and was a seasonal employee of the Green Thumb Greenhouse in DeLancey for the past 24 years.

Mrs. Pierce was born Feb. 5, 1935, in Walton, to Henry and Blanche Bailey Grotevant.

On Oct. 17, 1953, she married Leo E. Pierce.

Mrs. Pierce was a 4-H leader for 27 years, the treasurer of the Walton Historical Society, secretary of the Walton Grange and a weather observer for Mundale.

She is survived by her husband, Leo; her children, Linda (Kermit) Mott of Deposit, Mike (Lisa) Pierce of Florida, Leona (Steve) Jump of Masonville, Mark (Lisa) Pierce of Walton and Lorinda (Brian) Backus of Trout Creek; 10 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. She is also survived by her sisters, Julia (Richard) Welch, Bernice Scott, Beatrice (Lynn) Bennett and Marion (Al) Barber; a brother, Raymond Grotevant, and sister-in-law, Wanda Grotevant; her husband's sisters, Clara (Leon) Dart, Charlotte Cash and Marion Pierce; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Family members who died earlier include her parents, Henry and Blanche Grotevant; her sister, Frances Beardslee; her brothers Roy and Alfred Grotevant; and a special granddaughter, Brianna Backus.

Service will be Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Chapel, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, where family will receive friends this evening from 6 to 9. Interment will be at Walton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Walton Emergency Squad, the Walton Historical Society or the Walton Grange #1454 in her name would be appreciated.

Werner V. Naujeck

ONEONTA — Werner (Warren) V. Naujeck, 52, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., passed away on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale.

He was born Jan. 13, 1949, in Oneonta, the son of Bruno P. and Sophie (Dragaseck) Naujeck.

He married Joanne R. Dunwald in 1972. She survives.

Werner was employed by Albertson Liquor Store in Fort Lauderdale, where he served in the capacity of store manager.

He served in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1971.

Besides his wife, Joanne, he is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Patricia Naujeck of Oneonta; three nieces, Laurie K. Naujeck of Las Vegas, Nev., Jeanne Anne Naujeck of Baltimore, Md., and Michelle M. Naujeck of Boston, Mass.; and a cousin, Joseph Kapusta of Ravena.

He was predeceased by a brother, Erich E. Naujeck, in 1981.

A private committal service for Werner and his father, Bruno P. Naujeck, who died on Feb. 14, 2001, will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons, later in the spring.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Helen Scott

GLENMONT — Helen Scott, 74, passed away at home on Friday, March 9, 2001, after a long illness.

Helen was born on Oct. 24, 1926, in Cherry Valley. Mrs. Scott was the daughter of the late Gifford and Mary (O'Neil) LaMont.

Helen was a graduate of the Albany Business College. After school she owned and operated her own restaurant in Canajoharie.

She lived with her husband, the late Walter Scott, for many years in  West Virginia, then moved back to Glenmont four years ago, after his death.

Helen is predeceased by one daughter, Helen M. Bradley.

She is survived by her daughter, Gail Voorhees of Glenmont, and four grandchildren, Robert Voorhees, Katherine Voorhees, Paul Moore and Shawn Moore.

Relatives and friends called Sunday, March 11, 2001, at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar. Funeral services were held Sunday. Interment will be at the Albany Rural Crematory, in Menands.

Contributions in Helen's memory can be made to the American Lung Association of New York State, 8 Mountain View Ave., Albany, N.Y. 12214-5055.

Shirley H. Webster

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Shirley H. Webster, 81, formerly of Cooperstown, died Thursday, March 8, 2001, at The Meadows.

She was born in Bridgeport, Conn., on May 27, 1919, a daughter of Alfred and Mary (Knickerbocker) Hitchcock.

Shirley graduated from Milford High School.

She married Charles D. Webster on Dec. 24, 1938, in Susquehanna, Pa.

She particularly enjoyed birdwatching as well as other animals but devoted her life to her children and grandchildren.

Shirley is survived by a sister, Helen Kachmar of Trumbull, Conn.; a son, Charles H. (Skip) Webster of Schenectady; one daughter, Dianna Webster of Florida; a stepdaughter, Barbara Kurkowski of Richfield Springs; four grandsons, Donald, Daniel, Charles and David Webster; and seven great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Howard B. Maxwell

LEWES, Del. — Dr. Howard Bowden Maxwell died peacefully at home in Lewes, Del., on Wednesday, March 7, 2001, after a long illness.

A committed educator, Dr. Maxwell believed, with Henry Brooks Adams, that "a teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops." His whole life reflected this philosophy. Following graduation from Gettysburg College in 1952, he was commissioned as a naval officer, serving during the Korean War. He then received his M.A.T. from Harvard University, following which he taught in the Newton, Mass., public schools for three years and then became the director of alumni relations at his alma mater. He left Gettysburg in 1962 to complete his doctorate at the University of Michigan.

After serving on the staff of the State University at Albany, as the coordinator of academic advisement, Dr. Maxwell became dean of students at Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y., rising to the position of vice president for educational planning. In 1973, he accepted an appointment as vice president of the Commission on Independent Colleges & Universities for the state of New York. After six years in Albany he was asked to become the president of the equivalent organization in New Jersey. He was "back again on campus" in 1984, when he accepted the position of president of the Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades in Media, Pa.

In 1989, Dr. Maxwell was asked to return as its president to Girard College, where he had been a student from age 7 until graduation from high school. This was the high point of his administrative career.

In retirement, his involvement with the Southern Delaware Academy of Lifelong Learning of the University of Delaware became the culmination of his commitment to education. He developed and taught courses on the American presidency, World War II, the American Revolution and the history of U.S. immigration and also chaired the Academy's Council from 1997 to 2000.

Dr. Maxwell was born in Wilkinsburg, Pa., the son of the late Paul and Sadie Heron Maxwell.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Moxey Maxwell of Lewes, Del.; his daughter, Alison Maxwell Kochie of Hockessin, Del., and her husband, John; a stepdaughter, Marcia Moxey Hodges of Fairfax, Va.; and a stepson, Thomas  Taylor Hodges of Wrightsville, Pa., and his wife, Dana.

His first wife, Anne Funk Maxwell, preceded him in death.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, King Charles & Laurel Streets, Rehoboth Beach, Del.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Howard B. Maxwell Endowment Fund at the Southern Delaware Academy of Lifelong Learning, University of Delaware, Lewes, Del. 19958. For information, call (302) 645-4111. Donations may also be made to the Delaware Hospice Southern Division, 600 S. DuPont Highway, Georgetown, Del. 19947.

Barbara Smith

ONEONTA — Barbara Elizabeth Smith, 76, of Oneonta, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at her daughter's home in Oneonta.

Born June 5, 1924, in Pittsfield, Mass., to Clark and Lydia (Carson) Boardman, Barb spent her formative years in Sheffield, Mass., and Albany before moving to Oneonta in 1948.

She married Rodger "Pete" Smith on Sept. 14, 1946, and enjoyed 52 years of marriage before his death in 1999.

Barb endeared herself to many while she worked at the Catalog Desk at the original Sears and Roebuck Store in Oneonta and later at the State University College at Oneonta, where she retired as manager of the Payroll Office in 1987.

She was a member of St. James' Episcopal Church.

Barb will be remembered for her sunny disposition and her desire to serve and nurture others. She dearly loved her children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors and courageously cared for her husband for many years during his extended illness. Her happiest moments were spent with her family and in her garden,

Mrs. Smith is survived by two children and their spouses, Peter and Diane Smith of Saratoga Springs and Susan and William Clemons of Oneonta; and four grandchildren, Shelby Smith of Saratoga Springs and Sarah, Ian, and Meredith Clemons of Oneonta. She is also survived by her beloved sister and her husband, Ruth and Tom Delaney of Clifton Park, and their son, Tommy.

A graveside service will be held at noon on Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at the Sheffield Center Cemetery in Sheffield, Mass. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family at St. James' Episcopal Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert Haskell officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or St. James' Episcopal Church.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home in Oneonta.

Helen C. Pink

ALBANY — Mrs. Helen Crain Pink, 78, passed away Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Oneonta Nursing Rehabilitation Center after a short illness.

She was born Jan. 27, 1923, in the town of Middlefield, daughter of Anthony and Minni (Small) Crain.

On Oct. 20, 1951, she married John S. Pink Jr. He predeceased her on Sept. 30, 1990.

Mrs. Pink was a graduate of Cherry Valley Central School and worked for 42 years at G.E. in Schenectady, retiring in 1988.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Rose Pink of Cooperstown; a granddaughter, Darlene T. Pink; two great-grandsons, Andrew Burton and Matthew Burton of Cooperstown; two nephews, Richard Crain of Naples, Fla., and Robert Crain of Huntington Beach,  Calif.; and several cousins.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a granddaughter, Ann I. Pink; and three brothers, Warren Crain, Leon Crain and Leslie Crain.

A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Ron Fralick officiating, Burial will take place in the spring in the Springfield Center Cemetery, Springfield Center.

Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley.

In lieu of flowers, Helen's wishes were for any contributions to be sent to the Ann I. Pink Scholarship Fund, care of Cooperstown Central School, 39 Linden Ave., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326, or to Alpha Sigma Alpha-Epsilon Psi Chapter, Ann I. Pink Award, Plymouth State College, Plymouth, N.H. 03264.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Richard Price

INVERNESS, Fla. — Richard Charles "Pops" Price, 80, of Inverness, Fla., died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at Mariner Health Care Center.

A native of Brooklyn, he was born April 25, 1920, to the late Richard and Mary Manning Price.

He moved to Florida 10 years ago from Amityville, N.Y., where he retired as a supervisor of operations in the newspaper industry.

He was of the Catholic faith, a World War II Army veteran, and a life member of the VFW in Delhi, N.Y.

His greatest joy in life was his family. He loved watching two generations of his grandchildren grow and thrive. He welcomed his two great-granddaughters into his life with great joy. He was very proud of being a charter member of his Delhi VFW post. He lived every day to the fullest and was loved and cherished by his family and all who had the privilege to know him.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Edith Nitz Price, of Inverness; one son, Richard A., of Allen,  Texas; three daughters, Carole Ann Price of Germany, Kathleen I. Delaney of Setauket, N.Y., and Deborah J. Schoonebeek-Price of Oneonta, N.Y.; one sister, Helen Duffy, of Redlands,  Calif.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family of Richard C. Price will receive friends on Thursday, March 15, 2001, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home. Military graveside committal services for the urn will be conducted Thursday at 2:30 p.m. from Florida National Cemetery. Interment of the urn will follow.

Arrangements are by Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home With Crematory, Inverness.

Arthur Leonard

WEST WINFIELD — Arthur Leonard passed away March 10, 2001, at the home of his daughter in Richfield Springs.

He was born Sept. 9, 1906, in Pompey, the son of Lee and Gertrude Sharpe Leonard.

Arthur was a graduate of Lafayett High School and was married to Amy Congdon on Sept. 9, 1929. She died Oct. 31, 1998.

Arthur was the owner of a farm in Jordanville for many years and later in Herkimer County for many years.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He enjoyed woodworking but was limited because of being legally blind, but not in his mind.

He was a joy to all who knew him and will be greatly missed.

Surviving are his twin children, Donna and her husband, Langdon Ames, of Richfield Springs and Arthur Edwin and his wife, Rose Leonard, of Perth; grandchildren and spouses, Douglas and Linda Ames, Bradley and Ruth Ames, Gregory and Joan Ames, Sharon and Jim Decker, Carol and Tim Wright, Janet and Jim Sylvester, Timothy and Lori Leonard, Michael and Alicia Leonard, Amy and Eric Hine and Caryn and Chad Leonard; 24 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by five sisters and three brothers.

A funeral will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Wilcox-Dimbleby Funeral Home, West Winfield, with the Rev. Robert C. Calhoun officiating. Calling hour will be 1 p.m. until funeral time.

In lieu of flowers, please consider the West Winfield or Richfield Springs Ambulance Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Charles Egloff Sr.

WORCESTER — Charles G. Egloff Sr. (Charlie), a 14-year resident of Worcester, passed from life at the age of 77 on March 11, 2001.

He served in the United States Navy Armed Guard during World War II for three years on the SS Kenmore, the SS Vera Cruz and the SS George B McClellan.

Charlie lived in Lewisboro for 44 years, raising his six children while the owner of Charlie's Wheel Alignment.

He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the US Navy Armed Guard W.W. II Veterans.

He is survived by his wife, Susan; his brother, Arthur of Dobbs Ferry; six children, Charlie Jr. of Colorado, Ronald and his wife, Donna, of Lewisboro, Susan and her husband, John Blackwell, of Virginia, Richard of Lewisboro, Liza and her husband, Donald Mundy, of Milford and Barbara and her husband, Bill Cage, of Pawling; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The calling hours will be held at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester on Friday, March 16, 2001, from 3 to 6 p.m., with the funeral service starting at 5:30 p.m. with the Rev. Susan Strang, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Burial with military honors will be held at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester, later in the spring.

Donations may be made to the Louis Busch Hager Cancer Center, Atwell Drive, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Funeral arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.
