Mary Lee Lindsay

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Mary Lee Lindsay, 73, of Cooperstown, died early Friday morning, March 30, 2001, at her home.

She was born on Jan. 2, 1928, in St. Charles, Mo., a daughter of the late Sigvald F. and Mary Lucille (Redden) Udstad. She married William C. Lindsay in 1951, in Berwick, Pa.

Mrs. Lindsay attended grade school in Berwick, Pa., and graduated from high school in  Washington, D.C. She then attended the Knox School for Girls in Cooperstown and graduated in 1948.

For a period of time she was employed by the New York State Historical Association at The Fenimore House and, for many years, by the Cooperstown Color Center as a decorator.

A very well known figure at Christ Church in Cooperstown, she was a devoted member who will be sorely missed by her family and many friends.

Mrs. Lindsay is survived by her husband, Bill, of Cooperstown; her son, Creighton Lindsay, and his wife, Deborah, and their two children, Sophia and Claire Lindsay, of Corvallis, Ore.; and her brother, Sig Udstad of New York City.

A memorial service with a celebration of the Holy Eucharist will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, at Christ Church, Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas C. Smith, rector, officiating. A reception will follow in the Christ Church Parish House.

Committal services and entombment will take place at a later date in the Columbarium Wall in the churchyard at Christ Church.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or to Christ Church, 69 Fair St., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Gottardo DalCanton

FRANKLIN — Gottardo (Angelo) DalCanton, of Franklin, N.Y., formerly of Cliffside, N.J., died on Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Delaware County Countryside Care Center in Delhi, N.Y.

He was born in Quero, Italy, on July 26, 1898, the son of Gioviruis and Berlou Dalcanton. He and his wife, Amelia, were married 79 years ago in Italy and moved to Cliffside to live and raise their family. Amelia DalCanton died on Oct. 21, 2000.

He was a retired mason and was a member of Local 38 in New Jersey.

He was pre-deceased by his son, Jon DalCanton in 1993; grandson, Steven DalCanton in 1992; and his daughter, Clara DalCanton.

He is survived by his son and daughters-in-law, Lino and Louise DalCanton of Franklin, N.Y. and Josephine DalCanton of Bogato, N.J.; three grandchildren, John and Colleen DalCanton of Flower Mount,  Texas, James and Cathy DalCanton of Fairlawn, N.J. and Jean and Larry (DalCanton) Abowitz of Marlboro, N.J.; eight great- grandchildren, John and Jessica DalCanton of Flower Mount,  Texas, James, Cortney and Brianna DalCanton of Fairlawn, N.J. Chelsey and Eric Abowitz of Marlboro, N.J., and Joey Hamm of River Edge, N.J.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday April 3, 2001, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Fairview Mausoleum in Fairview, N.J.

The funeral will be in the chapel on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Father Frank of Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Fairview, N.J., officiating.

Entombment will follow in the Orchid Section of Fairview Mausoleum in Fairview, N. J.

Arrangements were entrusted to Nick E. Ferrentelli and Arthur N.  Jones and the Dorothy Memorial Homes of Afton and Bainbridge, N.Y.

George N. Stalbird

HAMDEN — George N. Stalbird, 82, a Delaware County native and long time Hamden resident, passed away Thursday night, March 29, 2001, at the home of his sister in Unadilla, after a short illness.

The son of the late John N. and Hattie M. (Miller) Stalbird, he was born Aug. 11, 1918, at Colchester Station and received his education in the Hamden District School.

A World War II U.S. Army veteran, George never married and was a carpenter by trade most of this life until his retirement.

Surviving are three sisters, Rhoda Gardepe of Countryside Care Center, Delhi, Josephine Morris of Mount Marion and Mildred (Albert) Nichols of Unadilla; his close friend, Edna Bryden, of Hamden; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Phillip, Lester and Walter Stalbird; and a sister, Elizabeth Rodes.

Friends are invited to attend funeral services at 1 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.

The Rev. Bert More will officiate and military honors will be accorded by the Donald W. Gleason Post 190 American Legion.

There are no calling hours. However, the family will receive friends after the service.

Burial will be at a later date in the family plot at Hamden Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet and Son, Delhi.

Kenneth Wessbecker

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Kenneth Edward Wessbecker died Thursday, March 22, 2001. He was 72.

He was born on Oct. 24, 1928, in the Bronx and resided on Long Island before moving to Richfield Springs.

Mr. Wessbecker was the owner of Figurine Enterprises Inc. Before this, he was a bus driver with the MTA on Long Island.

He served with the United States Navy during World War II.

Survivors include his daughter, Jennifer Samolewicz and her husband, Chris, of Somerset, N.J.; his sister, Dorothy Wessbecher of New York; and his brother, Francis Wessbecher of New Jersey.

A memorial service will be held in New Jersey at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Juan Alksnis

ANDES — Juan (Janis) Alksnis of Andes, N.Y., died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville. He was 87.

He was born June 14, 1913, in Latvia.

Mr. Alksnis married Matilda Laucans in 1948 in Argentina. They lived in Andes since 1978.

He was a retired electronic engineer for Atlantic Audio Visual in New York City.

Survivors include his wife, Matilda Alksnis of Andes; two sons, Armis and Mario Alksnis of Latvia; and a stepson, Janis Luzdins of Andes.

Funeral services will be held in Latvia.

Arrangements are being handled by the Hynes Funeral Home of Margaretville, N.Y.

Sanford J. Barnes

MIDDLEFIELD CENTER — Sanford J. ("Sandy") Barnes, 75, of the town of Middlefield, died Saturday morning, March 31, 2001, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born on May 20, 1925, in Rotterdam, a son of William Henry and Cecile (Alvord) Barnes.

He married Vera Russo on May 25, 1946, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown.

Educated in district schools, Sandy attended Cherry Valley High School.

On Aug. 18, 1944, he was inducted into the United States Army and proudly served his country during World War II in Company B, 317th Infantry Regiment. He was held a prisoner of war during 1945 until he was liberated by the 4th Armored Division.

On April 17, 1946, he was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant.

Upon his return to the United States, he was employed by Johnson's Dairy. He later owned and operated a dairy farm in the town of Middlefield for nearly 30 years.

One of Sandy's greatest joys was serving as a bus driver for the Cooperstown School District for over 40 years, driving the same route for several generations of local children.

Sandy was a member of the Fiddlestick Riding Club, the Holstein-Friesian Association and the New York State Draft Horse Club. He was also a member of the Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post No. 579 in Cooperstown and the former Red Creek Valley Grange No. 1583.

Sandy is survived by his wife of 54 years, Vera, of the town of Middlefield; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Crystal Barnes of Fort Plain, and Robert (Matt) and Julie Barnes of Schuyler Lake; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia and William Arnold of Galway and Jo Ann and John Randall of Balston Spa; seven grandchildren, Patrick Arnold and his wife, Kim, of Broadalbin, Michelle Arnold of South Glens Falls, Alison Randall of Ithaca, Scott Randall of Loudonville, Shawn Barnes of Fort Plain, Adam Barnes of Fort Plain and Regan Barnes of Schuyler Lake; two brothers, Maurice Barnes of Contoocook, N.H., and Ivan Barnes and his wife, Barbara, of Ames; three sisters, Eliza Hoke of The Meadows, Ida Quaif of California and June Archangeli of Burdett; one brother-in-law, America Russo and his wife, Johnny Jo, of Paris,  Texas; four sisters-in-law, Rose Thayer of Cooperstown, Olympia Burns of Oneonta, Mary Hollister and her husband, John, of Holland Patent and Antonetta Russo of Bayshore, Long Island; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by one son, Timothy M. Barnes, who died Sept. 8, 1989, and two brothers, Marvin and Leland Barnes.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John P. Rosson, pastor, officiating. Burial with full military honors will take place at a later date in St. Mary's Cemetery, Index.

Immediately following the funeral Mass, all attending are invited to join Sandy's family for a time of food and fellowship at St. Mary's Parish Center.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Tuesday evening, April 3, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m., when Sandy's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the American Heart Association, Heart Gifts Processing Center, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, N.Y. 13220-3049.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Carl L. Richards

COOPERSTOWN — Carl L. Richards, 57, of Cooperstown, made his transition early Friday morning, March 30, 2001. He went peacefully while at home with his beloved wife, Jane.

Carl was born March 9, 1944, in Cooperstown, son of the late Harold P. Richards and Kathryn M. (Walrath) Richards.

He married Jane E. (Kuhn) Richards 27 years ago in Middleburgh. Their lives together were spent happily in Cooperstown.

An Air Force sergeant and Vietnam veteran, Carl was dedicated to the local VFW Post 7128 and American Legion Post 579. He spent much of his time volunteering for veterans' events and was a volunteer fireman for many years.

Carl loved the outdoors and spent many weekends strolling through the woods in Cooperstown, calling turkeys, hunting deer and fishing the streams and lakes with his brothers, friends and wife.

For the past 29 years, Carl worked at the Bassett Healthcare Center in the AC/Ref department, where he made many friends.

Carl was an exceptional man, well-known and respected. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his mother, Kathryn M. Richards; his best friend and wife, Jane; a daughter and future son-in-law, Rebecca and Brian Bullen of Minneapolis, Minn.; a daughter and future son-in-law, Christina and Lewis Phares; and his granddaughter, Cali M. Phares of Cooperstown.

His wife, daughters and future sons-in-law will always remember lessons learned from Carl, a devoted husband and father. His knowledge, strength and dedication to family are traits to be remembered and admired by all. He will always be near in memory and spirit.

Also surviving are brothers, Harry M. Richards of Florida, Harold M. Richards of Florida, Lawrence D. Richards of Cooperstown and Harry R. Richards of Cooperstown; several nieces and nephews; his many friends; and his two cats, Eve and Noel, whom he loved to spoil.

A service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, April 6, 2001, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown. There will be no calling hours. However, the family will receive friends after the service at the Cooperstown Vet's Club.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made in Carl's memory to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Services, Cooperstown and Milford.

Michael B. Gleason

SCHENEVUS — A Mass of Christian burial for Michael B. Gleason will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Schenevus.

SCHENEVUS — Michael B. Gleason, 57, of Schenevus, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at his home.

He was born April 12, 1943, in New York City, the son of Michael and Catherine (Lennon) Gleason.

He married Jacqueline C. Meerman on April 12, 1964, in Bergenfield, N.J.

In 1976, Michael and his family moved to Schenevus.

He was a self-employed brokerage operations consultant in New York City.

Michael was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Schenevus; a past member of the Stock Loan Association, New York City; the Dividend Association, New York City; and the Cashier's Association, New York City.

He was an assistant scout-master, an assistant coach and manager of the Little League and Pee Wee Football in Dumont, N.J. Michael was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting.

He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline; his children, John and his wife, MaryGrace Gleason, of West Islip, Michele and her husband, Rob Wright, of Worcester, and Dennis and his wife, Rebecca Gleason, of East Durham.

He was the beloved "Pop Pop" to his grandchildren, Emily and Claire Gleason, Michaela and Madison Wright and Liam and Shannon Gleason.

Also surviving are a brother, John Gleason; two sisters, Maureen Wood and Barbara Fagerman; his godson, Conor Gleason; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Dennis S. Gleason.

Calling hours will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home, Schenevus. There will be a vigil service at 8:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Schenevus, with the Rev. Edward Golding as celebrant.

Burial will be at the Schenevus Cemetery in Schenevus.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of Michael to the Schenevus Central School Music Department, 100 Main St., Schenevus, N.Y. 12155; the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155; or the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Carolyn K. Groat

WEST ONEONTA — Carolyn K. Groat, 70, of West Oneonta, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 14, 1930, in Dolgeville, the daughter of Charles and Ruth (Garlick) Knapp.

Carolyn married Russell Loren Groat on June 16, 1951, in Dolgeville. He survives her.

Carolyn was a 1952 graduate of State Teachers College at Oneonta, where she received her degree in elementary education. She had taught kindergarten and had left teaching to raise her family. Later she was a substitute teacher with the Oneonta City School District and BOCES until her retirement.

She had been a Cub Scout den mother and a member of the West Oneonta Fire Department Auxiliary, the Buckingham Ringers Bell Choir at First United Methodist Church, Oneonta, the Upstate Home Youth Bell Choir and the Oneonta Football Booster Club.

She had many interests, including camping, needlework, crafts, reading, collecting spoons and bird watching.

She is survived by her husband, Russell L. Groat, of West Oneonta; one daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and David Shinn of New Jersey; three sons and daughters-in-law, Edward L. and Dolores Groat, Russell J. and Victoria Groat and Steven C. and Christy Groat, all of Virginia; five grandchildren, Michele Kalteux, Sarah Groat, Ann Marie Burgess, Joseph Brame and David Shinn; two great-grandchildren, Christian and Catherine Burgess; and a sister and brother-in-law, Harriet and Lee Morrison of Plant City, Fla.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. John Dougherty, pastor of the West Oneonta Baptist Church, officiating. Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, today from 7 to 9 p.m., when the family will be present. Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy be given to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820, the West Oneonta Fire Department, West Oneonta, N.Y. 13861 or to the charity of one's choice in memory of Carolyn K. Groat.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Grace G. Adams

DELHI — Grace G. Adams, 80, a Delhi native, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Countryside Care Center, where she had been residing for the past year and a half.

The daughter of Walter O. and Grace (DeWitt) Adams, she was born July 26, 1920, in Delhi, where she grew up and received her education at Delaware Academy.

She later moved to New York City, where she lived for a number of years. Subsequently, Grace returned to Delhi, where she was employed as a food-service worker for the College Association at Delhi Inc. until her retirement.

Surviving are a daughter, Margaret Ann Daniels of Binghamton; a brother, Roy G. Adams of Delhi; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and in-laws.

She was predeceased by her sister, Sadie Adams Lollie; and her brother John Adams Sr.

Friends are invited to call on Tuesday morning, April 3, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. by Michael Crabtree of the Hamden Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, of which Grace was a member.

Burial will be at a later date in the Woodland Cemetery.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.
