Frederick Beecher

WALTON — Frederick Russell Beecher, age 100, of 139 North St., Walton, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at his home.

He was born on May 12, 1900, at Rock Valley, a son of Charles and Kathryn Beecher.

On June 9, 1921, he married Minnie Alma Hoolihan in Goulds. They lived several years in Rock Valley, near Hancock and then moved to Walton in 1937.

Mr. Beecher was employed at the GLF Feed Store in Walton and also operated several different dairy farms in Rock Valley and Walton.

He particularly enjoyed gardening, mowing and building. However, deer hunting and watching televised baseball were his favorite hobbies. In later years Mr. and Mrs. Beecher enjoyed using their travel trailer and taking many senior citizen trips. Fred was known for his quiet sense of humor and towering strength of character. He immensely enjoyed his 100th birthday party in May 2000.

Fred Beecher is survived by five daughters, Viola and Charles Fiumera of Walton, Wenona and Donald Hovey of Cooperstown, Virginia Beecher of Utica, Althea and Lawrence Gennarino of Oneonta and Carol and Charles Brown of Morrestown, N.J.; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Charles Beecher of Walton. His special longtime friends were Evelyn and the late Graham  Jackson of Walton.

He was predeceased by his wife of 78 years, Minnie Alma Beecher in 1999; and twin sons, Hilton and Milton Beecher.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner North and Delaware streets, Walton, where friends may call on Friday, April 13, 2001, from 1 to 3 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Service 10 a.m. Saturday, April 14, 2001, at the United Methodist Church, North Street, Walton, with the Rev. Earl Pomeroy officiating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church or to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Steven L. Miller

ROCHESTER — Steven L. Miller, 80, of Rochester, formerly of Portlandville, passed away March 18, 2001, in Rochester Memorial Hospital.

He was born Aug. 18, 1920, in Portlandville, the son of Steven and Elizabeth (Balos) Miller.

He married his wife, Diana, on Aug. 5, 1950, in Rochester.

He was a graduate of Batavia School For The Blind.

He was a former employee of Kodak Film, Krypstar and Rochester Memorial Hospital.

He loved gardening. He was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta and Church Of The Assumption Of Our Lady in Fairport.

Mr. Miller is survived by his loving wife, Diana; one daughter, Lynda Horrocks, and her husband, Michael, of Fairport; a granddaughter, TerryLynn Hamilton; a grandson, Christopher Horrocks; two brothers, George Miller of Oneonta and John (Joe) Miller of Milford; two brothers-in-law, Andrew (Jack) Simcox of Portlandville and George Leonard of Bayonne, N.J.; and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three sisters, Mary Lynch, Anna Simcox and Theresa Leonard; and two nephews.

Mr. Miller was laid to rest in  White Haven, on March 20, 2001.

Marie Whitaker

GREENE — Marie Nahow Whitaker, 86, a dedicated school teacher for 20 years at Cayuga Heights Elementary School in Ithaca, passed away April 3, 2001, in Greene.

Marie Whitaker was the widow of Clair Laverne Whitaker of Ithaca.

She was born Oct. 10, 1914, in Albany, and graduated Siena College cum laude in June 1946, and Cornell University with a master's in education in September of 1960.

She married Clair Whitaker on May 14, 1944.

Marie Whitaker had a career with the federal government for 12 years. She moved with her family to Ithaca in 1953, where she became a teacher. Marie resided in Ithaca until a year ago, when she moved to Greene to be with her oldest daughter, Pamela Coviello.

Marie Whitaker was involved in many community groups in and around Ithaca. She was active in the Republican Women's Organization, the First Presbyterian Church of Ithaca, the educational scholarship program of P.E.O., the Garden Club, the Women's Community Center and the Antique Club. She was also an active volunteer for a variety of other charitable organizations.

Marie Whitaker is survived by two daughters, Pamela W. Coviello of Greene and Candace W. Fleece of South Pasadena,  Calif.; four loving grandchildren, Derek Coviello, Garth Coviello, Lindsay Fleece and Jesse Fleece; two sisters, Olga Murray and Kathleen Kammer; and her brother, Colonel Theodore Nahow.

She was much loved by many and will be missed.

A graveside service will be held May 18, 2001, at 1:30 p.m. in Trout Creek Cemetery, Trout Creek.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Association in lieu of flowers.

Arrangements are by Root Funeral Home, 23 N. Chenango St., Greene.

Howard S. Dunbar

SIDNEY — Howard S. Dunbar, 78, of Sidney, passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at Wilson Memorial Hospital,  Johnson City.

He was born Oct. 21, 1922, son of Howard S. and Leah (Clayson) Dunbar Sr. in Buffalo.

Howard married Marian  Jackson on Aug. 16, 1947, in Genesee. She predeceased him on Oct. 23, 1966.

He graduated from Kenmore Senior High School in 1940, and attended State University College of Education, Brockport, and graduated from 1944, with his B.A. and received his B.S. at Alfred University. Mr. Dunbar received his M.S. from Syracuse University in 1950.

He began his teaching career at Barker Central School from 1944-45, then at Alfred-Almond Central School from 1945-46. In 1946 Mr. Dunbar moved to Sidney and was employed by Sidney Central Schools as a teacher and principal for Masonville Elementary School from 1946-55. Mr. Dunbar then took the position of principal of the Pearl Street Elementary School, Sidney, in 1955, and remained there until he retired in 1980. He was also an instructor for the adult education program from 1949-1961.

Mr. Dunbar was also involved in professional affiliations such as an officer for the Sidney Central School Faculty Association, a delegate to the Delaware County Teachers Association, a delegate to the House of Delegate, New York State Association of Elementary principals, area representative of Delaware County, board of directors NYS Teachers Association.

He had numerous theatrical performances for the Tri-Town Theater. Mr. Dunbar was member of Sidney Rotary, having received the Paul Harris Fellowship in 1978, and was a district governor from 1974-75. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons Scriba Lodge #414, Constantia. He was also an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Sidney.

He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Judith  Jackson Dunbar and James Beebe; good family friend, Alvin W. Edson; and several cousins.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 14, 2001, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Sidney, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Michael Shank, Vicar officiating. Friends may call Friday, the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. Friends may also call Saturday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney, at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church or the Sidney Public Library.

Serelia Gregory

ONEONTA — Serelia Gregory, passed away on Monday, April 9, 2001, at A.O. Fox Hospital, Oneonta.

Mrs. Gregory was born on July 2, 1917, in West Davenport, the daughter of the late Deforest and Lena Stenson Adee.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold S. Gregory in 1986, and a great-granddaughter, Jessica Sarah Gregory in 1988.

She is survived by a son, Wayne Gregory, of Oneonta; a daughter, Kathleen Brenes, and her husband, Frank, of Long Island; seven grandchildren, Neil Brenes and his wife, Leilany, Leane Nuce and her husband, Russell, Shane Gregory, Kimberly Gregory, Joshua Gregory, Shannon Gregory and Chelsea Gregory; one great-grandchild, Isabella Nuce.

Mrs. Gregory was a lifetime resident of the area. She owned and operated the "Needlekraft Studio" in Oneonta, and in addition, worked as a bookkeeper with Gregory Plumbing & Heating and other area businesses for many years.

She was an avid crafter who enjoyed needlepoint.

She was a member of the West Oneonta Baptist Church, where at one time, she played the organ and sang in the choir. She loved her family dearly.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, April 12, 2001, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. John Dougherty of the West Oneonta Baptist Church officiating, Spring interment will be in Charlotte Valley Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday (today) at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the West Oneonta Baptist Church, 2845 Route 8, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in Mrs. Gregory's memory.

Doris S. Estes

WALTON — Doris S. Estes, age 75, a lifelong Walton resident, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

She was born June 4, 1925, in Walton, to Nathan and Sara Amy (Way) Spafard.

She was a cheerleader and graduated from Walton High School.

On Sept. 19, 1945, she married Lionel R. Estes in Walton.

Mrs. Estes worked as personal secretary for Thomas O'Neil at Walton High School and later as personnel associate for The College Association at Delhi, retiring in 1988.

She was a member of The First Congregational Church in Walton for more than 50 years. She will be remembered for her devotion to her family, her love of her garden and flowers and as an avid sports fan, especially basketball and tennis. She would often be seen walking her little white dog, Toby, on the neighborhood streets.

Doris S. Estes is survived by her husband, Lionel, at home in Walton; her children, William Estes of Annapolis, Md., Diane Leonard of Pittsford and John Estes of Liverpool; a sister, Marion Gavett of Bloomville; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Genevieve; a brother, Henry; and grandson, Scotty Leonard.

A memorial service will be held at The First Congregational Church, North Street, Walton, at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 12, 2001, where the family will greet friends following the service. The Rev. Paul Cronin and the Rev. John Currie will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the American Diabetes Association, 1701 North Beauregard St., Alexandria, Va. 22311 would be appreciated.

Arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way Inc., 102 Delaware St., Walton.

James Webster Sr.

CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. James Lawrence Webster Sr., 76, passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2001, after a short illness.

He was born in South Valley on April 29, 1924, the son of Ronald S. and Madge (Folmsbee) Webster.

In November 1942, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served until October 1945 in the 409th AAF Base Unit. He returned from Europe after V-Day July 1945, and married Myra Ruth Mabie on Aug. 6, 1945, at Perth. He was honorably discharged with a rank of technical sergeant on Oct. 8, 1945.

He and his wife started out married life living in Cherry Valley, where he worked at Glensfoot Farm. In October 1950, they moved to Unadilla, where he worked at Scintilla. In August 1952, he and his family moved to Mail Hill, South Valley, where he was a farmer until May 1969. After farming 1970, he worked for the Otsego County Highway Department, Cooperstown, as a truck driver. He retired from the county in 1986. In 1973, he and his wife moved to a home in Cherry Valley, where he grew and sold strawberries for several years.

Mr. Webster was active in Farm Bureau, Extension Service and administered programs for the ASC office in Cooperstown, and served as supervisor of the town of Roseboom. He was an active member of Whiteman, Hall, Snyder Legion in Cherry Valley and maintained contact with some of his war comrades via of being an active member of the 409th Bomb Squadron. He was a member of the First Christian Church, South Valley.

Survivors include his wife, Myra Mabie Webster of Cherry Valley; two daughters, Suzanne Tompson of Cherry Valley and Rebecca Lofstrom of Fort Plain; two sons, James Jr. of Austin,  Texas, and David of Princess Anne, Md.; grandchildren, Michael and Ronald Clapper and Matthew, Madeline, Miranda and Sarena Webster; stepgrandchildren, Kerry, Aaron and Caleb Lofstrom.

He was predeceased by a sister, Avis Huntington; and three brothers, Ronald Jr., Stanley and Edward.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 13, 2001, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Alan Miller officiating. Burial will be in the South Valley Cemetery at a later date.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, with a service at 7:30 p.m. by the Whiteman, Hall, Snyder American Legion Post #1360.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Webster's memory may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, N.Y. 13220 or the First Christian Church, South Valley.

Margaret C. Brown

BETHESDA, Md. — Margaret C. Brown, 92, of Bethesda, Md., died April 2, 2001.

She was born April 7, 1908, in Ashtabula, Ohio, and worked as a librarian in Warren, Ohio, and New York City.

She married Eugene J. Brown in 1935, and came to Oneonta in 1945, when Mr. Brown became general manager of the Oneonta Star.

She and Mr. Brown had a weekly interview and news program for many years on WDOS.

Mrs. Brown was active in civic affairs in Oneonta and was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

The Browns' moved to Danbury, Conn., in 1955, when Mr. Brown became publisher of the Danbury News-Times.

After her husband's death in 1990, Mrs. Brown moved to Bethesda, Md.

Survivors include her son, Jonathan of Alexandria, Va.; and four grandchildren, Senem of Istanbul, Turkey, Jack of Cairo, Egypt, Katharine of St. Andrews, Scotland, and Lucinda of New Haven, Conn.

Memorial donations may be made to the Southbury Public Library, Main Street, Southbury, Conn., 06488.

Evelyn Lipscomb

EAST WORCESTER — Evelyn Lipscomb, 88, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

She was born Dec. 25, 1912, in Manhattan, the daughter of Charles and Dorothy Prahlow.

She was predeceased by her husband, Albert Lipscomb.

She is survived by her children, Richard of Florida, Alberta of Arizona, Marilyn of Delaware, Beverly of Harrison and Walter of East Worcester; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Per Mrs. Lipscomb request, she was cremated and there will be no local services. Burial will take place at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix, Ariz., at a later date.

Contributions may be made to the Worcester Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 191, Worcester, N.Y. 12197.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Robert Cady  White

BEDFORD, Va. — Robert Cady  White, formerly of Sidney, N.Y., passed away in Bedford, Va., on Monday, April 9, 2001.

Robert was born in Hudson, N.Y., on April 15, 1913, to Ethel Downing and William Cady  White.

He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth in 1962; and his second wife, Anne; his brother, William; and sister, Dorothy.

He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Peter and Joyce  White of Star Lake, N.Y., and Jon and Hope  White of Irvine,  Calif.; his daughters and son-in-law, Lurinda  White and Susan and John Ford of Walton; six grandsons; two great-grandchildren; and a dear friend, Freida.

Mr.  White retired from Bendix, Sidney.

He was a member of the Sidney Elks Club and was a resident at the Elks National Home in Bedford, Va.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Special Care Fund, Elks National Home, Bedford, Va., 24523.

Graveside services will be held in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney, at a later date.

MacDonald Grant

UNADILLA — MacDonald Grant, 84, of Unadilla, passed away Friday, April 13, 2001, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born Aug. 4, 1916, son of Cary and Nellie Dagenkolb Grant in Russia, N.Y.

Mr. Grant served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as an examination specialist and retired after 34 years. Mr. Grant also once owned Grants Country Store in North Colesville.

Mr. Grant was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Unadilla.

He married Gwendolyn Brown Hood on Aug. 30, 1985, in Hendersonville, N.C.

He loved his motor home and he and his family traveled in it throughout the United States.

He is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn Brown Hood Grant, of Unadilla; a son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Patricia Grant, of Binghamton; two daughters and a son-in-law, Linda Hauer of Binghamton and Deborah and Robert Thompson of Lakeland, Fla.; a stepson and daughter-in-law, William and Vicki Hood, of Sidney; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Vivian and Stephen Quimby of Unadilla and Patricia and Robert Haks of Harpursville; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was also predeceased by his first wife, Frances; two brothers, Eric and Herbert Grant; and a sister and brother-in-law, Alice and John Vroman.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 16, 2001, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Donna Joy Schmid, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Unadilla, will officiate.

Friends may call Sunday, April 15, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Burial will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park, Vestal, N.Y.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Unadilla.

Arrangements are being handled by C.H. Landers Inc. Sidney.
