William F. Vail

FRANKLIN — William F. Vail of Franklin, died unexpectedly on April 11, 2001. He was 15.

William was a student at Delaware Academy where he played soccer.

He was born in Walton on Aug. 3, 1985, to Thomas J. and Susan J. (Taylor) Vail.

He is survived by his father and mother; and his sister, Kendra.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at the First Congregational Church, North Street, Walton.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Treadwell Emergency Squad, Roaring Brook Road, Treadwell, N.Y. 13846 in his name would be appreciated.

Irene E. VanNatten

HOWES CAVE — Irene E. VanNatten of Howes Cave died Monday, April 16, 2001, at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County, Cobleskill, where she had been a patient for nine days.

Mrs. VanNatten was born Oct. 5, 1904, in the town of Summit, daughter of Marvin and Martha Ryder Zeh.

She was married in Summit in 1928, to Earl J. VanNatten. He died in 1974.

Mrs. VanNatten had lived most of her life in Howes Cave, but since February 1999, had been a resident at Marchand Manor, Sharon Springs.

She had been an active member of the Cobleskill Senior Citizens, a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Community Hospital at Cobleskill and a member of the Farm Bureau.

Mrs. VanNatten is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Glenn E. and Doris VanNatten of Cobleskill; two grandchildren, Dean VanNatten of Saratoga and Diane VanNatten of Palmyra, Pa.; three great-grandchildren, Caitlin Irene, Christopher and Carol VanNatten, all of Saratoga; five nieces, Helen Couch of Goodyear Lake, Sandra Cronkite of Palantine Bridge, Elaine McCafferty of Howes Cave, Fredia Bates of Knox and Lucille Lions of Worcester; four nephews, Maurice Bradley Jr. of Summit, Paul Bradley in Florida and Marvin and Burnett Zeh, both of Oneonta.

Services will be held Thursday, April 19, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, 1 Chapel St., Cobleskill, with the Rev. James Bowen officiating. Interment will be in Bramanville Cemetery, town of Cobleskill. Visiting hours will be Wednesday 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Schoharie County Council of Senior Citizens, Inc., 122 E. Main St., Cobleskill, N.Y. 12043.

Jean Friedlander

DELHI — Jean Friedlander, 96, of Delhi and formerly of the Bronx, passed away on Friday, April 13, 2001, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

She was born in Poland on Feb. 28, 1905.

She was predeceased by her husband, Louis Friedlander, in 1947, and six of her siblings.

In the United States she is survived by two daughters, Roslyn Weiss and her husband, Arnold "Arnie," of Delhi and Judith Berger and her husband, Norman, of New York City; and one granddaughter, Linda Blocker, and her husband, Dr. Seth Blocker, of Margaretville. One brother, of Israel, and his family, also survive.

Mrs. Friedlander was a four-year resident of Delhi, coming from the Bronx. She was born in Poland and immigrated to the U.S. in her late teens. During World War II, she lost most of her family to the Holocaust.

In her early years, she was a seamstress who loved making clothing for her daughters.

She will be remembered as a survivor who loved her family dearly, and had a profound belief in God.

Private graveside services at Temple Beth El Cemetery, Oneonta, will be at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the O'Connor Hospital, Route 28, Delhi, N.Y. 13753 in Jean's memory.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Josephine A. Hood

CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. — Josephine A. Hood, age 86, of Crystal River, Fla., died on Sunday, April 15, 2001, at the Life Care Center in Lecanto, Fla.

Born March 19, 1915, in Red Lodge, Mont., she came to Florida four years ago from Denver,  Colo.

Mrs. Hood taught school at the Oneonta High School.

Mrs. Hood was a retired school teacher for the New York State School System and a member of the Retired Teachers Association.

She was of the Catholic faith.

Surviving are her husband of 21 years, Lester J. Hood of Crystal River, Fla.; two sons, Charles Hale of Elizabeth, N.J., and Paul Hale of Logan, Utah; one daughter, Sharon Hale of Los Angeles,  Calif.; two brothers; one sister; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service for Mrs. Hood will be conducted on Friday at 11 a.m. April 20, 2001, at the Strickland Funeral Home Chapel in Crystal River, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, West Central Florida Chapter, P.O. Box 2070, New Port Richey, Fla. 34656-2070.

Strickland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ivah S. Reploeg

WORCESTER — Ivah S. Reploeg, 89, died Monday, April 16, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

Arrangements are pending with the E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Emily Bachmann

TODDSVILLE — Emily Bachmann, 87, of Toddsville, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Bassett Hospital.

She was born Oct. 27, 1913, in Luce, Minn., daughter of Bertha Barmettler and Gustave H. Bachmann.

She lived a full and satisfying life making people happy.

Emily is survived by her brother, James; and sister, Elaine of Minnesota; and by her beautiful cat, Boots.

She was predeceased by her dogs, Brandy and Princess, whose remains will be interred along with hers in Minnesota.

Friends can meet at her apartment in Toddsville to share stories and remember her on Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at 7 p.m.

Julia Mathey

KINGSTON — Julia Pierce Mathey, 93, a four-year resident of Hutton Nursing Home and a former resident of Cooperstown, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at the Kingston Hospital.

She was born in New York City on March 18, 1908, a daughter of the late John and Hilda Lehto.

She enjoyed a professional dancing career in New York City theaters, including Radio City Music Hall, before becoming a NYC elementary school teacher in the 1930s. Her favorite class was always first grade until she retired in 1968.

She was the widow of the late Jules Pierce and Frederick B. Mathey.

She is survived by a son, Ronald J. Pierce of Stone Ridge; a stepson, Bill Mathey of Orlando, Fla.; and two stepdaughters, Mary Beth Meusgeier of Homer and Lynda Clifton of Scottsdale, Ariz. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and several stepgreat-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Sunday, June 3, 2001, at the Marbletown Reformed Church, Stone Ridge. The Revs. Robert and Joan Mitchell will officiate.

Arrangements are by the George J. Moylan Funeral Home Inc., Route 209, Stone Ridge.

Peter Densberger

HARPERSFIELD — Peter F. Densberger, 52, of Harpersfield, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born Dec. 29, 1948, in Hackensack, N.J., the son of Richard and Ruth (Albrechtson) Densberger.

Mr. Densberger lived in this area for 15 years, owning and operating his own silk screen-printing company, Cardinal Design, in South Kortright.

Two daughters, Marlena and Kelly; one brother, Richard Densberger Jr. of Hillsdale, N.J.; one sister, Jody Tarallo of Syracuse; and two nephews and a niece survive him.

Calling hours will take place on Thursday, April 19, 2001, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Delaware County Food Bank, 56 Main St., Delhi, N.Y.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

William F. Vail

FRANKLIN — William F. Vail of Franklin died unexpectedly Wednesday, April 11, 2001. He was 15.

He was born in Walton on Aug. 3, 1985, to Thomas J. and Susan J. (Taylor) Vail.

William is survived by his parents; a sister, Kendra; maternal grandmother, Arvie  Taylor of Sarasota, Fla.; and paternal grandmother, Violet Vail of Walton.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at the First Congregational Church, North Street, Walton, with Rev. Paul Cronin officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Treadwell Emergency Squad, Roaring Brook Road, Treadwell, N.Y. 13846 would be appreciated.

Funeral arrangements are by Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, Walton.

Katherine Matuljak

COBLESKILL — Katherine Matuljak, 83, of Pleasantview Drive, Cobleskill, died Friday, April 13, 2001, at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County at Cobleskill.

Mrs. Matuljak was born in Illinois on March 23, 1918, daughter of Alex and Katy Pavic Usalatz and was a longtime resident of Worcester and Cobleskill.

She was the former owner and operator of The Kaymat Shop in Cobleskill and the A. & A. Pub in Gloversville.

She was married on Sept. 24, 1956, to Alfred Matuljak. He survives.

Other survivors are daughters and sons-in-law, Katherine and Robert Frase of Cobleskill and Virginia and James O'Connor of Worcester; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Pemberton of Richmondville; and a brother, Michael Usalatz of Worcester. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

At a later date a graveside service in Maple Cemetery will be conducted by the Rev. Joyce Allen of the United Methodist Church of Worcester.

Peter Glance

OCALA, Fla. — Peter Glance, 83, a retired employee for Michigan's Department of Natural Resources, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at Sylvia's Hospice House.

A native of Saginaw, Mich., he moved to On Top of the World in Ocala in 1988.

Mr. Glance was a United States Air Force veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Glance of Ocala; sons, Peter Glance of Bangkok, Thailand, and Terry Glance of Oneonta, N.Y.; a daughter, Susan Hammill of Atlanta, Ga.; sisters, Tillie Schultz of Vassar, Mich., Frieda Shillaire of Milford, Mich., and Esther Crowley of Ocala; a brother, Harvey Reisig of Saginaw, Mich.; and two grandchildren.

Ivah S. Reploeg

WORCESTER — Ivah S. Reploeg, 89, died Monday, April 16, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Jan. 24, 1912, in Worcester, the daughter of Wesley and Dora (Vroman) Somerville.

She was married to Ralph E. Finger on Aug. 31, 1940, in Long Island, until his sudden death in 1957. She then married Herman Reploeg in 1969 in Worcester. He predeceased her in 1984.

Mrs. Reploeg was a Worcester High School graduate, Class of 1932.

She lived in Long Island for 17 years and was employed by the Home Fire Insurance Co. in New York City for nine years.

In 1947, she moved back to Worcester and worked at the State University College at Oneonta in the Business Office from 1960 until her retirement in 1977.

She was member of the Worcester United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Woman's Club, Worcester Historical Society, Worcester Woman's Club and the SUCO Retirees Golden Alumni.

For the past several years she taught piano lessons and very much enjoyed her many students and their families.

She is survived by a daughter, Linda, and her husband, Paul Little, of Riparius; a son, Gary, and his wife, Vera Finger, of Warren, Pa.; three grandchildren, Jennifer and her husband, Kevin Wickes, of Aiken, S.C., Jonathan Little of Rochester and Elisabeth Little of Riparius; and five stepchildren and their families, Timothy Reploeg of Richmondville, John Reploeg of Florida, David Reploeg of  Pennsylvania, Stephen Reploeg of East Worcester and Anne Ferraro of Amsterdam.

She was predeceased by her parents, a daughter, Charlene Kathy Finger; a brother, Baxter H. Somerville; and a grandson, Benjamin Little.

Per Mrs. Reploeg's request, she was cremated and a memorial service will be at 2 p.m., Friday, April 20, 2001, at the Worcester United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Joyce Allen officiating. Following the service a reception will be held in the fellowship hall at the church.

Burial will take place at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester.

There will be no calling hours.

The family has requested in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Worcester Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 191, Worcester, N.Y. 12197 or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 3532 James St., Suite 104, Syracuse, N.Y. 13206.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester.

Paul R. Erikson

COOPERSTOWN — Paul Runar Erikson, 91, of Cooperstown, and formerly of Bayside, Long Island, died early Monday morning, April 16, 2001, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born on April 29, 1909, in Tjudo, Aland, Finland, a son of Erik and Victoria (Johansson) Eriksson.

He married Alice May Hillier on March 12, 1938, in the Church of the Transfiguration ("The Little Church Around the Corner") in New York City.

Raised and educated in Finland, Mr. Erikson, immigrated to the United States in 1929, aboard the steamship, Kungsholm. He settled in New York City and after studying to be an electrician, became employed by Klein Electricians in Brooklyn. During this time he performed many gas-to-electric conversions in buildings on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. He later became employed by ConEdison where he served for 30 years, retiring in 1974, as supervising foreman of the 59th Street Powerhouse in New York City.

Active for more than 60 years in Freemasonry, Mr. Erikson was raised in St. Nicholas Lodge No. 321, Free and Accepted Masons in Manhattan on Feb. 19, 1936. This lodge later merged with Continental Lodge No. 287, F.&A.M., in Manhattan. In 1986, he affiliated and became active with Otsego Lodge No. 138, F.&A.M. in Cooperstown. A member of Unity Chapter No. 328, Royal Arch Masons in NYC, he affiliated with Otsego Chapter No. 26, R.A.M. in Cooperstown in 1987, and that same year became a member of Otsego Commandery No. 76, Knights Templar in Cooperstown.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Alice, of Cooperstown; one daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Robert D. Manchester Jr. of Blythe, Ga.; four grandsons, Peter Pleuss and Erik Manchester, both of East Worcester, David van Gaasback of  Pennsylvania and Richard van Gaasback of California; three great-grandsons, Corbin Pleuss and Michael and Daniel van Gaasback; and one sister, Dr. Elsa Eriksson; and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Nellie Eriksson, both of Aland, Finland.

Mr. Erikson was predeceased by one daughter, Mrs. Carolyn Venita (Erikson) van Gaasback; two granddaughters, Jennifer van Gaasback and Denise Pleuss; one sister, Regina Eriksson; and two brothers, Ragnar and Helge Eriksson.

A Masonic funeral service, conducted by Brothers of Otsego Lodge No. 138, F.&A.M., will be held at 7:30 this evening, April 18, 2001, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Burial will take place at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, 2001, in Flushing Cemetery, Flushing.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
