Esther M. Linder

HALFMOON — Esther M. Linder, 82, of Halfmoon, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at Samaritan Hospital in Troy.

Born in Harpersfield, she was daughter of the late James and Eva Chandler Hotaling.

She was educated in the Schenevus school system and resided in this area since 1951.

Mrs. Linder had worked at Standard Manufacturing Co. in Troy in her earlier years.

She was a communicant of St. Bernard's Church, Cohoes.

She was wife of the late Stanley J. Linder; mother of Cindy Linder-Cantwell of Waterford; and sister of Marguerite Coats of  Johnson City, Dorothy Gallagher of Otego, Archie Hotaling of Hartwick and the late Mabel Clark, Theron and Cylon Hotaling and Viva Cornell. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be held Friday at 8:45 a.m. from the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St. (Route 32), Waterford, and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Bernard's Church, Cohoes. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Waterford.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the S.P.C.A. of Upstate New York in care of the funeral home office.

William H. Suhr

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Mr. William H. Suhr passed away April 17, 2001, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, at the age of 86. He was a resident of Richfield Springs.

He was born in Ozone Park, Queens, the brother of the late John and Sarah.

He was a member of the Warren Grange, and Richfield Springs Sportsmen's Club.

Survivors include nephews, John, Bruce and Gregory Suhr; nieces, Jane Kilthau and Susan Jack; and devoted friend, Terri Levitsky.

Private family burial will be on Long Island.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Elizabeth Hoffman

ONEONTA — A graveside committal service for Elizabeth Miller Hoffman who died Nov. 25, 2000, will be held 2 p.m. Friday, April 20, 2001, at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, with the Rev. Gary Bonebrake, pastor of Main Street Baptist Church, Oneonta, officiating.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Ransom Barrett

MARGARETVILLE — Ransom (Steve) Barrett, 81, of Margaretville, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at his residence.

He was born March 24, 1920, in Andes, the son of Louis Barrett and Carrie Davis.

He graduated from Andes Central School in June 1938.

He married Betty Place on Jan. 12, 1944, in Margaretville.

He was in the United States Army Air Corps and served in World War II, Korean and Vietnam wars. Steve served from July 7, 1941, until April 7, 1968. He was an air craft mechanic and retired from military service in 1965.

He moved to Margaretville in 1982, from Wilmington, Del.

He was a member of Margaretville United Methodist Church and Middletown American Legion Post #216. He had served on the village planning board.

Steve volunteered for many community projects. He enjoyed gardening and feeding his birds.

Steve is survived by his wife, Betty Barrett; three sons, Bob and his wife, Dusty Barrett, Bill and his wife, Donna Barrett, and Don and his wife, Phyllis Barrett; brother, Bruce and wife, Glenna Barrett; sister, Virgina Barrett; sister-in-law, Marge Barrett; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Miller.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, April 22, 2001, at the United Methodist Church, Margaretville, with the Rev. Dr. George Carpenter, officiating. Burial will be in the Old Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville.

Calling hours are Saturday, April 21, 2001, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, when the family will be in attendance. Friends may call at their convenience on Saturday.

Contributions may be made in memory of Steve Barrett to the Margaretville Memorial Hospital or the Memorial Fund of United Methodist Church, Margaretville.

Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Maude Finkle

ANDES — Maude Eva Titch Finkle of Andes, died on Monday, April 16, 2001, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in  Johnson City. She was 79.

Mrs. Finkle was a housewife and mother.

She was born Dec. 24, 1921, in Bussy Hollow, town of Andes, to Harvey Leland and Florence Isabelle (Fletcher) Titch.

She was educated in Andes and graduated from Andes High School in 1939.

On May 11, 1943, she married Issac "Bob" Finkle in Shavertown.

Mrs. Finkle lived in Andes all her life.

She will be remembered for being an excellent mother, sister and neighbor.

She is survived by her husband, Bob of Andes; her sons, William and his family in Middletown and Theodore of Norwich; her daughter, Debbie Stanton of Walton; her sister, Helen Nichols of Walton; and nine grandchildren.

Family members who died earlier include her sister, Harriett Stevens.

A memorial service will be Sunday, April 22, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, North Street, Walton, with the Rev. Paul Cronin officiating. Burial will be in Shavertown Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the First Congregational Church would be appreciated.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, Walton.

Rudolph J. Burke

ONEONTA — Rudolph J. Burke, 87, of Oneonta, died Monday morning, April 16, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born June 28, 1913, in New York City, the son of John W. and Anna (Strobl) Burke.

He married the former Mildred Reed on May 15, 1937, in New York City. She died May 8, 1977.

Rudolph had been a salesman for the BSE Corp., Richmond Hill, Queens.

Previously living in the Bronx, he had been a resident of the Oneonta area since 1987.

Rudolph is survived by a daughter, Barbara Linsalata of Greenlawn; one sister, Mary Ebert of Cala Vasas,  Calif.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2001, from St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Walnut Street, Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert Longobucco, associate pastor, officiating.

At Rudolph's request he will be cremated following services and his cremains interred in St. Raymonds Cemetery, the Bronx, at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Kay Lynch

WALNUT CREEK,  Calif. — Kay Lynch, 70, passed away unexpectedly at her home in Walnut Creek,  Calif., on Friday, April 6, 2001.

She was born in Erie, Pa., on Feb. 23, 1931, to James Frederick and Mae Jenks.

A graduate of Oneonta High School in 1949, and the State University College at Oneonta, Class of '53, she married Thomas D. Lynch, Jr., formerly of Oneonta, on June 24, 1953.

A resident of California since 1955, she initially taught school in the San Francisco Bay Area and, in later years, worked for the county.

Kay was a devoted wife and attentive mother and grandmother as well as a Bible student, gardener, gourmet and avid book collector. She was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years; daughters, Beckie Kinghorn, Amy Lynch, Shauna Eisenmann and Kathleen Miller, all of California; daughter, Frances Lynch of Portland, Ore.; six grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Lansing, and sister-in-law, Nancy Lynch, both of Oneonta; along with other relatives.

She was predeceased by a brother, George Jenks; and sister, Marion Jenks.

A private family service was held in Pleasant Hill, Ca., followed by cremation.

Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Oneonta, at a later date.

Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Unity School of Christianity, Unity Village, Mo. 64065-0001.

Mary Hoyt

HOBART — Mary Hoyt, 82, formerly of Hobart, N.Y., died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at New Milford Hospital in New Milford, Conn.

She was born July 19, 1918, in Culbertson, Mont., the daughter of Augustus and Blanche (Berry) McMullen.

Mrs. Hoyt lived with her daughter Dixie in Roxbury, Conn., for 25 years, previously residing in Hobart, where she lovingly cared for her family.

Survivors include a son, Robert B. Hoyt, of Spencerport, N.Y.; a daughter, Sandra Kimball of Liverpool, N.Y.; a daughter, Diane Churchill of Roxbury, Conn.; eight grandchildren; and 15 great- grandchildren.

She is predeceased by one daughter, Mary Colburn, and one grandson, Eric Kimball.

Funeral services will be Monday, April 23, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, in Hobart, with the Rev. Richard Elder presiding.

Graveside services will follow in Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

John H. Barrall

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Dr. John H. Barrall, 74, of Providence, R. I., formerly of Morris, N.Y., died Sunday, April 8, 2001, in Providence.

Dr. Barrall had a general practice in Morris from 1956 to 1961, following his internship at Greenwich Hospital in Greenwich, Conn.

He was born in Kingston, Pa., a son of the late Herbert M. and Anna (Davies) Barrall.

Dr. Barrall had a practice in obstetrics and gynecology in Providence for 30 years, retiring in 1996.

He was a member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church, the Sons of the American Revolution and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Besides his wife Elizabeth (Cronk) Barrall, he leaves a daughter, Allison Christopher of La Canada,  Calif.; four sons, Dr. David T. Barrall of Providence, J. Michael Barrall of East Hampstead, N.H., Andrew C. Barrall of Clifton Park, N.Y., and Matthew E. Barrall of Chicago; two brothers, the Rev. Herbert M. Barrall of Salem, Ore., and David D. Barrall of McKees Rocks, Pa.; and six grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Mary E. Lawry and Chester R. Barrall.

Douglas W. Shaw

NEW BERLIN — Douglas W. Shaw, 53, of New Berlin, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, in Norwich, N.Y.

He was born April 21, 1947, in Cortland, son of Kenneth and Leila (Butts) Shaw. He spent most of his childhood in the McLean area.

He was a member of the McLean Community Church, a past member of the McLean Fire Department and member of the Boy Scouts of America and Explorer Scouts.

A 1966 graduate of Dryden High School, he was a retired carpenter.

Mr. Shaw is survived by his longtime companion, Lisa Moore, a daughter and son-in-law, Shellie and Scot Cron of Raleigh, N.C.; a son, Jason Shaw, of Owego; a granddaughter Kaitlyn Cron of Raleigh, N.C.; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth Shaw Jr., in 1996.

A memorial service will be held Monday, April 23, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Wayne J. Andrews

ONEONTA — Wayne J. "Pete" Andrews, 73, of Oneonta, passed away Saturday, April 21, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was born July 6, 1927, in Amsterdam, the son of Joseph and Oleta (Babcock) Andrus.

He married Catherine T. McMahon on Oct. 2, 1948, in Troy.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy.

He retired in 1981, as an engineer on the Delaware and Hudson railroad, where he worked for more than 33 years.

Wayne was an avid sportsman, as well as being an accomplished amateur boxer both in high school and while he served in the Navy. He excelled in swimming and diving and participated in many diving events. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting,

A 52-year area resident, Wayne was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church and its Folk Group in which he played the banjo.

He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, the Norwich Banjo Club and the National Rifle Association.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine T. Andrews of Oneonta; his children and their spouses, Wayne J. and Christine Andrews Jr. of Meridale, Peter J. and Renee Andrews of Oneonta, Brian M. and Janet Andrews of Davenport, Christine T. Andrews and her husband, Aaron Harrison of Oneonta, and Catherine T. Andrews and her husband, Thomas D. O'Donnell of Mount Vision; his grandchildren, Steven, Michael, Jason, John, Dannielle, Caitlin, Phillip, Mark, Katie, Megan and Michelle Andrews, and Kristian, Matthew, Rachel and Aaron House; and three great-grandchildren, Nicholas Andrews, Jacob Joubert and Zellah House.

He is also survived by his brothers and sisters and their spouses, David and Frances Andrews of Davenport, Richard and Elaine Andrews of Oneonta, Donna Jean and Keith Ryder of Davenport, and Elizabeth Townsend of Oneonta; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Yazid Beit Donadelle.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at noon Tuesday, April 24, 2001, in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert Longobucco, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta on Monday evening from 7 to 9, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Wayne's family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the Otsego County Public Health Nurses and Aides, the A.O. Fox Hospital Staff, and the Oneonta Fire Department, for the loving care given to him during his prolonged illness.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Douglas W. Shaw

NEW BERLIN — Douglas W. Shaw, 53, of New Berlin, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, in Norwich.
