Herbert A. Liddle

DELHI — Herbert A. Liddle, 79, of Andes Road, a native and longtime businessman, died Monday, April 23, 2001, in Arcadia, Fla.

The son of the late Leland and Lillian (Allen) Liddle, he was born April 29, 1921, in Delhi and was a 1941 graduate of Delaware Academy. He married Eva Sanford on April 2, 1943, in South Kortright and has lived in the Delhi area all of his life.

He owned and operated his own business, Herbert Liddle Trucking, doing local and long-distance hauling as well as selling fuel and masonry products. "Herbie" retired in 1984 after 40 years in business. Subsequently he bought and sold antiques in the summer, spending the winter months in Florida.

He was a member of the United Ministry of Delhi and the Oneonta Moose Lodge, and especially enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbors.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years Eva S. Liddle; a son, Timothy Liddle of Port Crane; a daughter Kerry (Harry) Gracey of Delhi; a brother, Richard (Wilma) Liddle of Zephyrhills, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Charlotte Schneider, and a brother, Clifford Liddle.

The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 29, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where funeral services will be conducted by Charles Cook at 11 a.m. Monday, with burial following in the Woodland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family will appreciate memorial contributions to the United Ministry of Delhi or the American Diabetes Association, 356 North Midler Ave, Syracuse, N.Y. 13206.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet and Son, Delhi.

Richard H. Winne

COLONIE — Richard Henry Winne, 57, of Colonie, loving father of Richard, Faith and Alisabeth Winne, passed into eternal life on April 27, 2001, at Saint Peter's Hospital.

Born in Oneonta on May 11, 1943, to the late Russell and Zuella Winne, he was a graduate of Oneonta High School and Colgate University. He earned his master's degree in history at the University of Wisconsin.

He retired from the state of New York in 1998.

As a 10th generation descendant of Peter Winne, who arrived in the Americas in 1652, he was a member of the Dutch Settlers Society of Albany since 1973. During his time as a member he served as president (1979-81), 1st vice president (1978-79, 1990-91), trustee (1984-89), chairman of the Nominating Committee (1984-90) and chairman of the Parade Float Committee (1986-City of Albany 300th Anniversary Parade; 1988-City of Watervielt 200th Anniversary Parade).

He was also a member of both the Sons of the American Revolution (1973-current) and the Holland Society of New York (1973-80).

He was involved with numerous school functions while his children were still in school, including: Christ the King Bingo Team #2 (1981-90), Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons Bingo Team #2 (1990), and the Christ the King School Board (member 1988-90, moderator 1990).

Also during the 1980s while his children were involved in Pop Warner Football, he acted as: Federation secretary (1988-91), New Scotland Association commissioner (1987-90), and Guilderland Association commissioner (1986). While attending Pineview Community Church he was a Pioneer Boys Club leader (1981-86). He was also a neighborhood collector for the Heart Fund, Cancer Fund, March of Dimes and the Leukemia Fund while living in Colonie. He was currently attending Colonie Christian and Missionary Alliance Church and St. Paul the Apostle Church.

He is survived by his three children, Richard Henry Winne II, Faith Joy Winne and Alisabeth Marie Winne; his brother, Peter Russell Winne of Hacienda Heights,  Calif.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Friends and family may call at the home of Richard Winne, 100 New Shaker Road, Colonie, on Tuesday, May 1, 2001, between 7 and 9 p.m. The funeral proceedings will be held at the convenience of the family at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Charles R. Kodra

SOUTH VALLEY — Charles R. Kodra Sr., 65, of state Highway 165, died Friday, April 27, 2001, at the Bassett Healthcare facility in Cooperstown.

Mr. Kodra was born June 24, 1935, in Dorloo, the son of Michael and Frances (Kaneg) Kodra Sr.

He was a lifelong area resident of Dorloo, moving to South Valley in 1993. Mr. Kodra had owned the Kodra ranch, a dairy farm, in Dorloo, for many years. He was a member of the Slovene National Lodge Association.

Mary "Betty" Kodra, whom he marred Oct. 17, 1959, died June 11, 1996. He was also predeceased by his son, Charles R. Kodra Jr., who died in February 1993.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Brett Sharpe of Esperance, and Frances and Leland Mabie of South Valley; a sister, Elsie Pochkar of East Worcester; a brother, Michael Kodra Jr. of Cobleskill; and four grandchildren, Jordon and Joslyn Mabie and Logan and Katelyn Sharpe.

A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 68 Elm St., Cobleskill. Officiating will be the Rev. Jared Van Wagenen IV of the Schoharie Reformed Church. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today, April 30, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Seward Valley Cemetery, Dorloo.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820, or the Cherry Valley Volunteer Emergency Squad, Cherry Valley, N.Y. 13320.

Frederick McCumber

MARGARETVILLE — Frederick C. McCumber, 85, of Margaretville, died April 29, 2001, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

He was born in Canada Hollow, town of Andes, Oct. 14, 1915, son of Ralph and Ruth (Muir) McCumber.

He married Virginia Bellows on Feb. 9, 1944, in Margaretville.

He was a T/Sgt. in the United States Army Air Corps. As an aircraft mechanic, he worked on P38 aircraft. He served from 1942-1945.

For 30 years he was associated with L. Bussy & Co. as worker and partner. Later he worked for the Town of Middletown Highway Department as a heavy equipment operator. He retired in 1978.

He was a lifelong area resident. He attended the United Methodist Church, Margaretville, was a 50-year active member of the Margaretville Fire Department, a 56-year member of Middletown American Legion Post 216, a 64-year member of Margaretville Masonic Lodge #389 and former treasurer of the village of Margaretville.

He was a talented craftsman, making many special projects. He enjoyed hunting, fishing gardening and playing golf. He looked forward to going to Myrtle Beach in the winter months.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia McCumber, Margaretville; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Steve Roeser, Fairview Heights, Ill.; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Shirley McCumber, Margaretville; he shared a special love with his grandchildren, Eric and Chris Roeser, Dallas,  Texas, Kaley McCumber, Travis Air Base,  Calif., Aleska McCumber, Margaretville; sister and brother-in-law, Emily and Karl Allme, New Kingston; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 3, 2001, at the United Methodist Church, Margaretville, with the Rev. Dr. George Carpenter officiating. Calling hours are Wednesday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville. Margaretville Masonic Lodge services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Contributions in memory of Fred McCumber may be made to the Ambulance Fund of Margaretville Memorial Hospital or the Margaretville Fire Department.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Sheila A. Hoke

MOUNT UPTON — Sheila A. Hoke, 45, of Mount Upton, passed away Sunday, April 29, 2001, at home with her loving family by her side.

She was born June 26, 1955, daughter of Alfred and Mary Meade  White in Norwich.

Sheila married Terry Hoke on Aug. 4, 1973, in Mount Upton.

She was employed by Preferred Mutual Insurance Co. of New Berlin as a claim representative.

Sheila was a member of the First Baptist Church of South New Berlin, where she taught Sunday School. She was also a past Daisy Troop leader.

She is survived by her husband, Terry Hoke, Mount Upton; mother, Mary Baldwin and Ardie Franklin, Norwich; father, Alfred  White, Virginia Beach, Va.; grandmother, Doris  White, Norwich; two daughters, Carrieann Hoke-Heath and Russell Heath, Mount Upton, and Cathy Hoke and Tim Thatford, Syracuse, (expecting their first child); five brothers, Rick and Sandy  White, Virginia Beach, Va., Rock and Carol  White, Virginia Beach, Va., John and Priscilla Baldwin, Norwich, Brent Baldwin, Virginia Beach, Va., and Paul  White, Virginia, Beach, Va.; four sisters, Liza  White and Andy Leed, Candor, Vicki and Bert Beames, Otego, Crystal  White, and Tammy and Jeff Henderson, Memphis, Tenn.; one grandchild, River Hoke Heath; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at the First Baptist Church of South New Berlin, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Daniel Age and the Rev. Ken Simpson officiating.

The family will receive visitors at 10 a.m., before the service, at the church.

Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Mount Upton.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, N.Y. 13815 or the First Baptist Church of South New Berlin.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Margaret A. Mabon

DELHI — Margaret Annis Mabon, 64, of Delhi, died April 28, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born Dec. 15, 1936, in Delhi, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (McDivitt) Mabon.

Miss Mabon graduated from Delaware Academy in the Class of 1955. In 1960, she graduated from Crouse Irving Hospital as a registered nurse. She continued to work there for a time; then at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City. She retired in 2000 after 19 years at St. Vincent Hospital in New York City.

It was at this time that she moved back to Delhi.

Margaret loved her flower gardens and collecting antiques. She traveled extensively around the world. Her family will always remember her keen sense of humor and the special care that she showed each of them.

She is survived by an uncle, Jim Oliver, Delhi; and cousins, Helen (John) Bramley, Delhi, William (Doreen) Laing, Bainbridge, Joyce (Martin) Freyer, Masonville, Gilbert (Ann) Laing, Earlville, Linda Davis, Otego, Daniel (Sandy) Laing, Kentucky, William R. (MaryLou) Oliver, Delhi, Roxanne (Larry) Hundycz, Fulton, and Gary M. (Kimberly) Oliver, Delhi.

Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Delhi, with the Rev. Arvid Whitmore officiating. Calling hours will be on Tuesday, May 1, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi. Burial will be at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in her memory may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Joseph V. Swantak

ONEONTA — Joseph V. Swantak, 78, of Oneonta, died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Oct. 28, 1922, in South Kortright, the son of Valentine and Laura (Kasmer) Swantak.

He was married to Wilma Odell, of Meridale, in June 1945.

Mr. Swantak was the owner-operator for more than 50 years of Joseph Swantak Inc., Oneonta, a regional wholesaler of farm equipment.

He was a lifelong area resident who enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma Swantak of Oneonta; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and David Robinson of Chester; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Nancy Swantak of Oneonta; and two grandchildren, Jennifer Robinson and Emma Swantak. Mr. Swantak is also survived by his brother, Frank Swantak of South Kortright; and four sisters, Mary Chapman of Bloomville, Jenny Meeghan of Stamford, Anna Hotaling of East Meredith and Helen Sega of Richmondville.

He was predeceased by three sisters and two brothers, Antoshia Swantak, Effie Ruparshuk, Sophie Cole, Stephen Swantak and Michael Swantak.

A memorial service will be held at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, on Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Sliter, pastor of the Aldrich Baptist Church, North Franklin, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be given in memory of Joseph V. Swantak to the Aldrich Baptist Church, Route 28, North Franklin, N.Y. 13820, or to the Meridale Emergency Squad, Meridale, N.Y. 13806.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Robert W. Utter

ONEONTA — Robert W. Utter, 81, of Oneonta, died Friday, April 27, 2001, at home, following a lengthy illness.

He was born Feb. 20, 1920, son of William and Izma (Bullis) Utter, and married Eleanor Weyher on May 10, 1947.

Mr. Utter was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II, where he served in the Pacific Theater of Operations.

An engineer with the Delaware & Hudson Railroad for 30 years, retiring in 1985, he was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and a former member of the National Guard.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor, of 54 years; his son, Steven Utter of Oneonta; his daughter, Susan Decker, and her husband, Duane, of Maryland; two brothers, Clayton and Joyce Utter of Oneonta and Wayne and Eleanor Utter of Valrico, Fla.; and four sisters, Kathleen Maggio of Valerico, Fla., Barbara Dorimus of Brandon, Fla., Betty and Earl Beardslee of Goshen, Ala., and Carol and Roger Ackley of Oneonta. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Alicia Kilts and her husband, Walter, and Kimberly and Mathew Decker. He has one great-grandchild, Joshua Kilts. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bob was predeceased by two brothers, Clifford, who died while serving in the Korean War, and Walter Utter.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at Plains Cemetery in Oneonta with the Rev. Norman Moran officiating. There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Katherine Matuljak

COBLESKILL — An interment service for Katherine Matuljak, late of Cobleskill and Worcester, will be held Friday, May 4, 2001, at 2 p.m. graveside in Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester.

Mrs. Matuljak died March 23, 2001, at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County, Cobleskill.
