Dorothy M. Hutton

DOWNSVILLE — Dorothy M. Hutton, 75, of Downsville, passed away April 10, 2001.

She was born in Binghamton on Dec. 2, 1925, the daughter of John S. Mallery Sr. and Jennie L. France Mallery.

She graduated from Albany High School, Albany, in 1944, and began her training for a career in nursing in the Cadet Nurse Corps. After working as a registered nurse in Albany hospitals, she resumed her education at Russell Sage College in Troy, and received a bachelor's of science degree in nursing education. She then worked to train nurses in the Albany area and at Trudeau Institute, Saranac Lake.

Dorothy was married to Gerald O. Hutton of Hyndsville and Newcomb on July 14, 1960, in Albany. They moved to Cairo and then to Downsville, following Gerald's career changes. Dorothy and Gerald were summer residents of the Adirondacks at their camp on Eagle Craig Lake, near Tupper Lake.

In 1970, Dorothy became an instructor at the State University College of Technology at Delhi, in the LPN program. She continued in this program and retired as an associate professor in 1988.

After retirement, she was active in the NYS Retired Teachers Association and served as regional health care coordinator. She was a member of the Colchester Community Church in Downsville, where she served as a choir member, the Order of the Eastern Star, Long Lake New York Chapter; and the DAR.

She is survived by her husband, Gerald D. Hutton; a brother, John S. Mallery Jr. of Long Lake; a brother-in-law, Les Brown of Cobleskill; and nieces and nephews, Lucinda Mallery of Ithaca, Susan Gurian of Tenafly, N.J., Judith Duffy of Hood River, Ore., Margaret Mallery of Kentfield,  Calif., Timothy Mallery of Williamsport, Pa., Lesley Ann Nelson and Dale Gensch of Albany.

Funeral services will be held from the Colchester Community Church, Downsville, on Saturday, May 5, 2001, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Maybelle Renzi, of the Colchester Community Church, officiating.

Interment will be in the Seward Center Cemetery, Seward.

Friends may call at the Knorr Funeral Home, Downsville, on Friday evening, from 7 to 9 when the family will be in attendance.

Persons wishing to do so may contribute to the Downsville Emergency Squad Memorial Fund or the Colchester Community Church in her memory.

Barbara E. Shields

SIDNEY — Barbara E. Shields, 73, of Sidney, died Monday, April 30, 2001, at Countryside Care Facility, Delhi.

She was born Sept. 23, 1927, daughter of Herbert and Iris Constable Elderkin in Walton.

Barbara graduated from Walton High School and attended Syracuse University. She retired as a typesetter from the Tri-Town News, Sidney.

Barbara was a member of the Women of the Moose #502, Sidney and the Charles L. Jacobi Post #183 American Legion Auxiliary, Sidney. She loved gardening and making quilts.

She is survived by her mother, Iris Elderkin of Walton; two sons, Andrew and Kathlyn Shields of Rochester and Mark Shields of Albuquerque, N.M.; two daughters, Mary and Harry Paul of Unadilla and Susan McLean of Juneau, Ark.; a brother, John and Elizabeth Elderkin of Walton; two sisters, Pauline and Richard Claire of Bainbridge and Phyllis and Donald Howe of Walton; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is predeceased by longtime companion, Marvin Stoutenberg; father, Herbert Elderkin; and sister, Jacqueline Baird.

Funeral and committal services will be held Thursday, May 3, 2001, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. John Dawson officiating.

The family will begin to receive visitors at 9 a.m. before the service on Thursday.

Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Sidney Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Elizabeth Coleman

COOPERSTOWN — Elizabeth A. Coleman, 84, died Sunday evening, April 29, 2001, at The Meadows.

She was born in Cooperstown on July 2, 1916, a daughter of Lewis and Carrie (Vunk) Averell.

Elizabeth has been a lifelong area resident and attended Cooperstown High School. She was a technician for

Central Services at Bassett Healthcare for 28 years before failing health caused her to retire.

Elizabeth was an avid baseball fan — the N.Y. Mets were her favorite team. She also enjoyed reading and was dedicated to her family.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia McArdle of Cooperstown; two granddaughters, Cheryl Rock and her husband, Andrew, of Rochester and Stephanie Casey of Syracuse; three grandsons, Brian McArdle and his wife, Theresa, of San Diego,  Calif., Thomas McArdle and his wife, Anita, of Milford, Conn., and Niel Coleman of Florida; two great-granddaughters; and four great-grandsons.

She was predeceased by a son, Joseph Coleman; and a granddaughter, Susan McArdle.

A graveside service will be held at a future date at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or to the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 6931 Arlington Road, Bethesda, Md. 20814.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Harold A. Smith

NORWICH — Harold A. Smith, 78, of  Woods Corners, Norwich, former partner of the R.D. Smith and Sons farm equipment business, passed away Saturday evening, April 28, 2001, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital of Norwich.

Born in West Davenport, Harold was the son of Raymond D. and Ethel (Stark) Smith.

Harold is survived by his wife, Mae Smith of Norwich, two children, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services for Harold will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2001, at 1 p.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Rebekah Sweet, pastor of the Broad Street United Methodist Church of Norwich, officiating. Interment will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery of Norwich.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Broad Street United Methodist Church, 74 North Broad St., Norwich, or to Chenango County Area Agency on Aging Nutrition Program (60 plus meals), 5 Court St., Norwich, N.Y. 13815.

Harold E. Burrows

DELHI — Harold E. Burrows, 65, of Ridge Manor, Fla., a former Elk Creek, Delhi, resident, and Meredith town justice, died Monday evening, April 30, 2001, at his home following an extended illness.

The son of Nelson E. and Pauline D. (Bouton) Burrows, he was born March 1, 1936, in Milford, and grew

up in Delhi, where he was a 1954 graduate of Delaware Academy, subsequently receiving a
degree in criminal justice from Empire College — SUNY.

Harold enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving from 1954-1958, and later married Margo Kathmann in Delhi on May 15, 1960.

He owned and operated a dairy farm on Elk Creek and later was employed for 12 years as a counselor with the New York State Department of Youth and for five years as an employment counselor with the Delaware County Department of Social Services, retiring in 1993.

During those years, Harold was an active volunteer in the Delaware County "Big Buddy" program and was a recipient of the Honorary Youth Award.

A Florida resident since 1993, he was noted for community service there and cited as "Ridge Manor Volunteer Citizen."

Harold was also an active member of Christ Lutheran Church, Brooksville, Fla., and had a love of the outdoors and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Margo K. Burrows at home; three daughters, Kim Terry of Ridge Manor, Fla., Amy (Richard) Hood of Davenport and Lisa (Richard) Sackett of Delhi; four grandchildren, Corey, Kaci, Danielle and Ethan-Jon; his mother, Pauline Burrows of Delhi; two brothers, Gerry (Marilyn) Burrows of New Baltimore and Allan (Lynda) Burrows of Penfield; three sisters, Dawn (Clive) Wart of Oneonta, Linda (Kenneth) Ogborn of Davenport and Delores (Rodney) Greene of East Meredith; a special aunt, Irene Rider of Delhi; his mother-in-law, Gertrude Kathmann of Ridge Manor, Fla.; a brother-in-law, William (Marsha) Kathmann of Delhi; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends are invited to call Thursday evening, May 3, 2001, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi. Private funeral services will be conducted on Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, by the Rev. John Priest, pastor, with burial following in the Woodland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions to the Hospice of your choice will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet and Son, Delhi.

Clifford D. Bramley

MARGARETVILLE — Clifford D. Bramley, 76, of Margaretville, died March 2, 2001, in Sumter, S.C.

Clifford was born Feb. 3, 1925, in the town of Andes, the son of Allie and Alfreda (Ruff) Bramley.

A graduate of Andes Central School in 1943.

He married Frances Barker at St. James Episcopal Church on Aug. 20, 1948. They celebrated their 50th anniversary at Temmings Hotel Andes in August of 1998.

He entered the New York State Police in 1952, and served for 26 years. He also served with the fire police in Margaretville, and as a Middletown town justice.

Clifford was also a member of St. Margarets Episcopal Church of Margaretville.

He is survived by his wife, Frances, of 52 years; a daughter and son-in-law, Freda and Roland Skala of Sumter, S.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Roban Bramley of New Paltz and Richard and Donna Bramley of San Angelo,  Texas; five grandchildren, Jessica and Jeffery Skala of Sumter, Kyle and Sean of New Paltz and Jason of San Angelo,  Texas; a brother, Donald Bramley of Andes; and three sisters, Virginia Jakszewski of Waynesboro, Va., Betty Gallup of Unadilla and Barbara and brother-in-law, Gar Gladstone, of Norwich.

Funeral service will be Saturday, May 5, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Jester-Stanley Funeral Home in Andes with the Rev. R.L. Donahue officiating. Burial will follow in Andes Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, May 4, where the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorials to the Margaretville Fire Department in the name of Clifford D. Bramley are appreciated.

Carlton M. Irons

HARTWICK SEMINARY — A committal service for Carlton M. Irons, who died Feb. 6, 2001, will be on Saturday, May 5, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery, with the Rev. Laverne Saxer, pastor of the Hartwick Christian Church, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Charles B. Coffin

COOPERSTOWN — Charles Barker Coffin, 85, of Oneonta, passed away early Tuesday morning, May 1, 2001, at The Meadows.

He was born in Schenectady on Sept. 2, 1915, the son of Edwin and Alicia Coffin.

Charlie graduated from high school in Schenectady and attended Green Mountain College.

He traveled the North East as a salesperson in his early career, before settling in as a stockbroker in the Capital District until his retirement in the 1970s.

He had been a resident of Oneonta for the last seven years.

He loved traveling and photography. These loves lead to the collaboration with his wife, Margaret (Mattison) Coffin, on several books about Early American painted tinware. Charlie also loved boating and cars.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Margaret, who lives at United Helpers home in Ogdensburg; and four sons, Charles Jr. (Duke) and his wife, Candy, of Hillsville, Va., Christopher and his wife, Patricia, of Ogdensburg, Jonathan of Syracuse and Jeffrey and his wife, Lisetta, of Oneonta. He is also survived by a sister, Gertrude Jones, and her husband, Chuck, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Private services will be held by the family.

Persons wishing to recognize Charlie can contribute to the Enhanced Care Unit of The Meadows, 140 county Highway 33W, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Eurydice E. Arnold

PALM COAST, Fla. — Eurydice E. Arnold, 84, of Pennfield Lane, Palm Coast, Fla., passed away April 29, 2001, in Flagler Pines.

She was born in New York. She moved to Palm Coast five years ago from Inverness, Fla.

She was a retired credit manager from Nyack Hospital in Nyack, N.Y.

She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Inverness, Fla., and an associate member of St. Mark By The Sea Lutheran Church and the Telephone Pioneers or America. She was active in Girl Scouts and past president of the PTA in Congers, N.Y.

She is survived by her sons, James Robert of Maryland, N.Y., and Charles William of Pocomoke, Md.; daughters, Jennie Lee Shreve of Shelbyville, Ky., and Theckla Wetzler of Palm Coast; sister, Ann Sczerzenie of Utica, N.Y.; brothers, George Gazetas of New York, Leon Gazetas of Forest Hills, N.Y., and Aristides Gazetas of Vancouver, British Columbia; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren;

Alderson's Palm Coast Community Funeral Home, 220 Palm Coast Parkway, Palm Coast, Fla., was in charge of arrangements.

De Witt Osterhout

GRAND GORGE — De Witt S. Osterhout, 77, formerly of Grand Gorge, died Monday, April 30, 2001, at the Robinson Terrace Nursing Home in Stamford, following a long illness.

Mr. Osterhout was born in Lawyersville, on Nov. 7, 1923, a son of Stanley and Edith Abrams Osterhout.

He was a retired long-distance truck driver who had worked for several trucking companies, among them McIntosh Trucking of Hobart and McBride Trucking of Roxbury.

Surviving Mr. Osterhout are six sisters, Gladys Vrooman of Cobleskill, Dorothy Reynolds of Cobleskill, Gertrude Koenig of New Jersey, Marian McCoy of Schoharie, Margaret Keller of Middleburgh and Shirley Shafer of Middleburgh; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2001, at the Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 63 River St., Middleburgh, with the Rev. Jared Van Wagenen IV officiating. Burial will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Robinson Terrace Nursing Home Activity Fund, Route 23, Stamford, N.Y. 12167 or Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Katherine Matuljak

COBLESKILL — An interment service for Katherine Matuljak, late of Cobleskill and Worcester, will be held Friday, May 4, 2001, at 2 p.m. graveside in Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester.

Mrs. Matuljak died April 13, 2001, at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County, Cobleskill.

Walton Forsythe Sr.

ONEONTA — Graveside services for Walton G. Forsythe Sr., who died March 23, 2001, will be held on Monday, May 7, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, with the Rev. Joe Fiske officiating.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home.

George Monsell

HARTWICK — Mr. George Monsell, 88, passed away Dec. 6, 2000, at The Meadows, Cooperstown.

He was born July 22, 1912, in Cherry Valley, the son of William and Lesh Monsell.

He was a truck driver for Monsell Trucking, Hartwick.

Graveside funeral and committal services will be held on Monday, May 7, 2001, at 10 a.m. in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Marguerite Jones

MILFORD — A memorial service for Mrs. Marguerite Lyons Jones, who died Dec. 23, 2000, will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Milford, with the Rev. Nancy Kozlowski, pastor of the Milford United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Milford Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Katharyn Bowen

COOPERSTOWN — Committal services and burial for Katharyn W. Bowen, 68, of Cooperstown, who died Dec. 19, 2000, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2001, in Westville Cemetery, with the Rev. Jeff Hale, pastor of Cooperstown United Methodist Church, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Charles J. Sheldon

OTEGO — Charles J. Sheldon of Otego, died Nov. 24, 2000. A graveside service will be held 10:30 a.m. May 7, 2001, at the Otego Evergreen Cemetery, Otego, with the Rev. Stephen Miller of the First Christian Church, Otego, officiating.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes of Oneonta and Otego.

Kathleen Pirone

ONEONTA — A graveside service will be held for Kathleen "Kaye" Pirone of Oneonta, who died Nov. 24, 2000, on Monday, May 7, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Cook Cemetery, West Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.
