Dorothy Morris

STUART, Fla. — Dorothy (McMorris) Morris entered her final rite of passage on Thursday, May 10, 2001, at Stuart, Fla.

Dorothy was born Aug. 19, 1906, in Oneonta, N.Y., the daughter of Robert A. and Ida (Stronigan) McMorris.

She graduated from Oneonta High School and the New York State Normal School at Oneonta. In addition to her studies, she was active in the schools' music programs, specializing in piano, which she loved and at which she excelled. She accompanied the Oneonta Violin Quartet at concerts and over the radio, and was employed as pianist at the Oneonta Theater.

Dorothy's career as an elementary school teacher began at the Worcester Central School, and after an interruption of several years for the purpose of parenting, continued in the Oneonta City Schools until her retirement in 1971. She taught in several of Oneonta's grade schools, at one time teaching mornings at East End School and walking the three to four miles to River Street School to teach there in the afternoons. It was in her role as kindergarten teacher — her favorite assignment, which she filled for the last 20 years of her career — that she became best known and loved in the community. She retired from that position at Riverside Elementary School.

Dorothy joined the work force during World War II, serving as a gauge inspector at the Scintilla plant in Sidney, N.Y.

She married J. Reid Morris in Oneonta on Dec. 18, 1931. They retired to Stuart, Fla., in 1973, where Reid predeceased her in February 1979. During her close to 30-year residency in Stuart, Dorothy was an active member of the Monterey condominium community, where she acquired many staunch and loving friends, played golf, and was well known for her skill at bridge.

She was predeceased by her brother, Robert S. McMorris, in November 1988.

Dorothy is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Robert R. Morris of Stuart, Fla., and Fred and Tina Morris of Oneonta.

Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, Karen (Morris) Laskowsky, Gail (Morris) D'Allesandro, Robert R. Morris, Jr., Frederic Morris, Jr., David Morris, James Morris, Lori Jo (Morris) Stranagan, Rebecca (Morris) Ogborn, Wendy (Morris) LaGoy, Gabrielle (LaPotin) Giordano, and Nicole (LaPotin) Michaud.

Dorothy is also survived by 18 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are Ethel (Fisher) McMorris of Schenectady, sister-in-law; Robert F. McMorris of Schenectady, nephew; Christie (McMorris) Scofield of Scotia, niece; and first cousins Mary (Shearer) Bordinger and Bruce Shearer, both of Oneonta.

Dorothy will be lovingly remembered and missed by several generations of Oneontans who knew her for her exceptional dedication, sensitivity, rapport, and effectiveness as "their" teacher.

The sorrow felt at Dorothy's passing by her loving family will be assuaged by the many endearing memories she leaves behind, and the celebration of the gift her life has been to each and all. Her enduring wit and humor will be sorely missed.

A service will be held at Aycock Funeral Home in Stuart, Fla., on Tuesday, May 15, at 7 p.m. Services are pending at the Bookhout Funeral Home.
