Lilia C. Veen

DELHI — Lilia (Nault) Carmody Veen, 88, of Delhi, died May 11, 2001, at Delaware County Countryside Care, Delhi.

She was born Feb. 23, 1913, in Manchester, N.H., the daughter of Adelard and Bernadette (Crevier) Nault.

Her first marriage was to John Carmody from 1931 until his death in 1937. She married George Veen on May 26, 1940, and he predeceased her Nov. 21, 1997.

Mrs. Veen lovingly cared for her home and worked at Victory Markets in Delhi.

She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and a member of the Altar Rose Society of the church. She enjoyed many years of bowling.

Survivors are her two sons, Howard (Grace) Carmody, Sun City, Ariz., and Thomas (Cecile) Carmody, Chippley, Fla.; a daughter, Elizabeth (John) Truscott, Delhi; a brother, John Nault, Delhi; and a sister, Joan Farrow, Lakewood,  Calif.; 19 grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will take place on Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Delhi, with Fr. James McDevitt, celebrant. Calling hours will be today, May 14, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi. Burial will be at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Legion Auxiliary, Delhi, St. Peter's Catholic Church, Alzheimer's Association or Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Christopher Warrell

COOPERSTOWN — Dr. Christopher J. Warrell, 72, of Cooperstown, died following a brief illness Sunday morning, May 13, 2001, at his home.

Chris was born on June 22, 1928, in Jersey City, N.J., a son of the late James and Martha (Millar) Warrell.

He married Lois Florence Robinson on Jan. 26, 1951, in Merrick, Long Island.

A native of Long Island, Chris graduated from high school in Valley Stream, and went on to graduate from Hofstra University.

From 1950 until 1952, he proudly served his country as a corporal in the United States Army during the Korean War.

In 1969, he received his doctorate in education from New York University.

He spent his professional life on Long Island, in the field of education, holding many administrative positions during his career. For 14 years he served as superintendent of schools for the North Shore Central School District, retiring in 1984.

Chris and his wife, Lois, moved to Cooperstown in 1989. A Master Gardener, he greatly enjoyed gardening as well as playing golf.

A civic-minded individual, Chris willingly volunteered his time and talents to several community organizations. He was currently serving as president of Friends of Bassett as well as chairman of the Otsego County Planning Board.

He was also a devoted member of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church where he was currently serving on the Board of Trustees, of which he was formerly chairman. He was also actively involved with the Cooperstown Rotary Club, and was a member since 1967 of Spartan Lodge No. 956, Free and Accepted Masons in Baldwin, Long Island.

Chris is survived by his wife of 50 years, Lois; two daughters, Debbie Crandall of Westboro, Mass., and Susan Fowler and her husband, Norman, of Fairport; two grandchildren, Jenna and Jonathan Crandall of Westboro, Mass.; his stepmother, Margaret Warrell of Providence, Rhode Island; and one aunt, Hilda Smith, of Oriskany.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., with the Rev. Jeffrey Hale, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Lakewood Cemetery, Cooperstown.

A Masonic Service will be conducted by Brothers of Otsego Lodge No. 138, Free and Accepted Masons, during the funeral service at the church on Wednesday morning.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut St., Cooperstown, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday evening, May 15, 2001, when Chris' family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, Chris' family would appreciate expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts to either the Cooperstown United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 66 Chestnut St., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326 or the Friends of Bassett, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Ervin E. Weaver

MILFORD — Committal services and burial for Ervin E. Weaver, 69, of Milford, who died Feb. 8, 2001, will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 17, 2001, in Hartwick Cemetery, with the Rev. John S. Dawson, chaplain for Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, officiating. Military honors will be accorded by members of the Cooperstown Veterans Club.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Edward E. Hughes

HOBART — Mr. Edward E. Hughes, of 13 River St., Hobart, passed away on May 13, 2001.

Mr. Hughes was born on April 3, 1931, in New York City, the son of the late Enoch and Isabelle Hughes.

Mr. Hughes was a member of the Class of 1949 at Watervliet High School, Watervliet, and the Class of 1954 at the State College of Forestry at Syracuse University.

He moved to the Delaware County area in 1963, to become the first professional Ski Patrolman at the Scotch Valley Ski Center.

Mr. Hughes worked for the State Department of Transportation as a Civil Engineer for 15 years. He next worked for the New York State Thruway Authority in Albany, in a like capacity, for an additional 15 years and retired in 1996 as an Assistant Chief Engineer.

A lifetime member of the NRA, Mr. Hughes was also an active member of the Elks BPOE #2480 and served as an active member of the Army Reserve for 12 years.

Mr. Hughes is survived by his wife, Marguerite Simmons Marquit Hughes; brother Jack and Janet of Port Angeles, Wash.; brother Jim of Albuquerque, N.M.; and sister Florence and Peter McElligott of Niskayuna. Other survivors include a son, Paul, and Leila Marquit; and daughter, Rosemary, and Roger Harris; as well as several nieces and nephews; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A sister, Isabelle Hughes Gijanto, predeceased him.

There will be no funeral.

A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family at a future date.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Jane E. Bordinger

NEW LISBON — Jane E. Bordinger, 43, of New Lisbon, died Monday, May 14, 2001, at her residence.

She was born Feb. 7, 1958, in Oneonta, the daughter of Chauncey C. and Martha (Murphy) House Jr.

She married Douglas J. Bordinger on Sept. 12, 1998.

Jane most recently was employed as a teaching assistant by ONC BOCES at the Oneonta High School. Prior to that she was a day care provider, a licensed beautician, and an area bartender for many years.

Jane was a lover of life. She especially enjoyed the students of the trust program, and fondly referred to them as her boys. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping, fishing and gardening. She truly had a green thumb. Her dog, Gabe, was very special to her, also.

She is survived by her husband, Douglas J. Bordinger of New Lisbon; her daughter, Shelby Jo Bordinger of New Lisbon; her mother, Martha D. House of Oneonta; her brothers and sisters and their spouses, Russell and Ginny House of San Diego,  Calif., Harold and Phyllis House of Milford, James and Peggie House of Oneonta, Michael House of Belleville, Ill., Mary Colone of Oneonta, Robert House of Oneonta, Joseph and Pat House of Omaha, Neb., Thomas and Renee House of Oneonta, William and Karen House of Traverse City, Mich., JoAnn and Michael Snyder of Oneonta, and Pamela and James Reda of San Diego,  Calif.; along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is also survived by her mother and father-in-law, Edward and Jean Bordinger of Oneonta; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Ed and Tammy Bordinger and Jeff and Tresha Bordinger.

Since there will be no calling hours, a service to celebrate the life of Jane E. Bordinger will be held at noon on Thursday, May 17, 2001, in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

John E. Vienna

OTEGO — John E. "Jack" Vienna, 72, of Otego, died Sunday, May 13, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born on Aug. 16, 1928, in Manchester, the son of Leon and Jane (Murray) Vienna.

He married Barbara A. Bowers on Nov. 18, 1950, in Ovid.

Jack was a veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Navy.

He retired from the New York State Electric and Gas.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, the Oneonta Elks Club, the Oneonta Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion in Manchester.

Jack served as an Otego Town Justice and chairman of the Board of Assessment Review.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara (Bowers) Vienna of Otego; a son, Kevin R. Vienna of Coronado,  Calif.; three daughters, Carol A. Vienna of Gulfport, Fla., Susan V. Dolan of Endwell, and Amy K. Vienna of Fort Mill, S.C.; a sister, Norma Doody of Shortsville; a brother, Tom Vienna of Edgewater, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

Jack was cremated, and there will be no calling hours.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at 2:30 p.m. in the Sacred Heart Church, 15 Liberty St., Sidney, with the Rev. Gordon Polenz, pastor officiating.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Sacred Heart Church, 15 Liberty St., Sidney.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Marie Groesser

COOPERSTOWN — A memorial service for Mrs. Marie Groesser, 87, formerly of Toddsville, who died March 5, 2001, will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 20, 2001, at the Hartwick Seminary Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Paul R. Messner, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Dorothy Woudenberg

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — A graveside committal service for Dorothy Woudenberg, age 68, who passed away on Dec. 15, 2000, will be held on Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at 2 p.m. in Twilight Rest Cemetery, Monticello, town of Richfield, with the Rev. Ronald Woudenberg officiating.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Marilyn E.  Schmidt

ONEONTA — A graveside committal service for Marilyn E.  Schmidt, who died on Dec. 21, 2000, will be held on Friday, May 18, 2001, at 1 p.m. in the Glenwood Cemetery (use back entrance), Oneonta, with the Rev. Spencer C. Vangulick, pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Edwin S. Peet

UNADILLA — Edwin S. Peet of Unadilla died Feb. 8, 2001. A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 19, 2001, at 2 p.m. from the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, with the Rev. Donna Joy Schmid, pastor of the Unadilla United Methodist Church, officiating.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

William Schooley

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — A graveside committal for William Schooley, age 74, who passed away on Jan. 5, 2001, will be held on Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at 1 p.m. in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Clauson Soule

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — A graveside committal for Clauson Soule, age 74, who passed away on Jan. 5, 2001, will be held on Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at 1:30 p.m. in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Gilbert Ivan Risley

ONEONTA — Committal services for Gilbert Ivan Risley, who passed away on Nov. 30, 2000, will be 2 p.m. on Friday, May 18, 2001, at the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

William E. Forrest

BAINBRIDGE — William E. Forrest of Bainbridge died on Monday, May 14, 2001, at his residence after a long illness.

He was born an July 2, 1929, in Bovina Center, in Delhi, the son of Norton C. and Anna (Gladstone) Forrest.

He married Marilyn Lee Price on May 6, 1956. He and his wife, Marilyn, resided for the last 45 years in the Bainbridge area.

He grew up on a jersey dairy farm in Bovina Center. He celebrated his 50th class reunion from the Delaware Academy in 1997, and his 50th class reunion from the NYSI, Cobleskill, in April 1999, where he received his Associate's Degree in dairy industry and agricultural business in 1949.

He was briefly employed in the dairy industry and then was a member of the United States Army (Korean Conflict) from 1950-1952. He was discharged November 1952 as a SFC, Regional Hdg, 39th Infantry Reg.

He started working with Bendix Corp., in Sidney, in January 1953. He was employed at Bendix for 32 1/2 years in management, retiring in 1986.

He and his family also owned and operated Jericho Jersey, a 120-cow jersey farm.

He was a member of Bendix Management Club; the Delaware County, the Chenango County and the New York State Jersey Clubs; and the American Jersey Cattle Association. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #806 Bainbridge. He also held several offices in local dairy organizations.

Surviving is his wife, Marilyn, of Bainbridge; a daughter and son-in-law, Janie Lee and Richard Glotzer of Oneonta; two sons and daughters-in-law, Scott and Diana Forrest and Kip A. and Deborah Forrest, all of Bainbridge; two granddaughters, Anna and Erin Glotzer of Oneonta; three grandsons, Tyler, Dylan and Kevin Forrest, all of Bainbridge; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary and William Inman of Bovina Center; three sisters-in-law, Mary Forrest Merando of Livingston Manor, Nancy Inman of Orangevale,  Calif., Marjorie Lewis and a brother-in-law, David Price of Bainbridge; also several nephews, nieces and cousins.

A daughter, Ellen, predeceased him.

There will be no visiting hours or funeral.

There will be a graveside service with full military honors at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, 2001, in Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht of the Otego United Methodist Church officiating.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Bainbridge Emergency Squad.

Arrangements were entrusted to Nick E. Ferrentelli and Arthur N.  Jones and the Dorothy Memorial Homes of Afton and Bainbridge.

Robert James Eldred

COOPERSTOWN — Robert ("Bobby") James Eldred, 54, of Cooperstown, passed away Monday evening, May 14, 2001, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on Nov. 29, 1946, in Utica, a son of Ronald L. and Betty (Bird) Eldred, who survive.

Raised in Cooperstown, Bobby graduated from Cooperstown High School in the Class of 1964.

He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1968, during the Vietnam era. Following his honorable discharge from the military, he lived in the Albany area and was a manager for several business concerns, including retail stores and a collection agency.

Bobby moved back to the Cooperstown area 15 years ago and was a self-employed contractor.

An avid hunter, he was a member of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 and the Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post No. 579 in Cooperstown.

Bobby is survived by his daughter, Marcy B. Eldred and his granddaughter, McKenna George, both of West Sand Lake; his father and mother, Ronald L. and Betty Eldred of Cooperstown; one brother and sister-in-law, Stephen J. and Bonnie Eldred of Cooperstown; his former wife, Jean Eldred of West Sand Lake; many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles; and many other relatives and loved ones.

He also leaves behind two special friends, Nancy Kennedy and Margo Watts, both of Cooperstown.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday evening, May 18, 2001, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John P. Rosson, pastor of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, officiating. A military honors service will be conducted this same evening by members of the Cooperstown Veterans Club.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
