Ernest F. Sloan

GILBERTSVILLE — Ernest F. Sloan, 83, of Gilbertsville, died Monday, May 14, 2001.

He was born July 8, 1917, in Davenport, the son of Frederick and Liddie (Banner) Sloan.

He graduated from Charlotte Valley Central School.

He married Beatrice Rudolf on Oct. 16, 1943, in Davenport. She died Dec. 20, 1989.

He owned and operated the Ox Bow Farm in Gilbertsville, and also his own saw mill.

He was well known for his love of his workhorses, his appaloosa and his jenny mule. He also shod horses for many of the local farmers. Ernie sawed the logs and built the log home on his property across the street from the Ox Bow Farm.

He was an avid square dancer and in his younger years had called square dances. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Ernie is survived by his daughter, Patricia Mills, and her husband, Thomas, of Delhi; his grandchildren, Aaron, Andrew and Adam Sloan and Michael, SarahJane, Trecia, and Daniel Mills; his great-grandchildren, Michaela and Mya Mills; his stepgreat-grandchild, Katje Mills; and his daughter-in-law, Pati Sloan.

A son, Ronald, who died in 1991, predeceased him.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, May 17, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, with Branch President Herbert Baldauf of the Delhi Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints. Interment will follow in the Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville. Calling hours will be from noon until service time at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to the Gilbertsville Fire Department or the Gilbertsville Emergency Squad in his memory.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Ruth M. Howe

BAINBRIDGE — Ruth M. Howe, 77, of County Road 39, Bainbridge, went to the arms of the Lord from her home on Tuesday morning, May 15, 2001.

She was born in the town of Milford on July 17, 1923, the daughter of the late Maurice and Blanche Houghteling Rowland.

On Oct. 15, 1944, she married Stuart O. Howe. They shared 56 wonderful years together.

She was a homemaker who devoted herself to her family and was loved by all. She was an avid bowler in the Tri-Towne Area.

Ruth for several years served on the Delaware County A.R.C. Board, Walton.

She is survived by her husband, Stuart O. Howe, Bainbridge; son and daughter-in-law, Lauren and Fay Howe, Otego; granddaughter and her husband, Deborah and Jace Hurlburt, Guilford; grandson and wife, David and Michelle Howe, Guilford; sister, Marion Barton, Garland,  Texas; two sisters-in-law, Betty Ackeret and Vivian Peck, both of Sidney. Also surviving are several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her son, Duane; her infant brother, Alton; and her twin brother, Harold.

In keeping with her wishes, there will be no calling hours or formal funeral service.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 18, 2001, from the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney, with the Rev. Michael Amos, pastor of the Fellowship Baptist Church, Unadilla, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in her name may be directed to Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, N.Y. 13815.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Bertha Terpening

CHERRY VALLEY — Graveside memorial services for Bertha B. Terpening, 92, who passed away Oct. 12, 2000, will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2001, in the South Valley Cemetery, South Valley, with the Rev. Alan Miller officiating. Burial will follow.

There will be a celebration of life at Brazie's Oak Ridge Lodge, South Valley, immediately after the graveside service.

Arrangements were by the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Charles Eggloff Sr.

WORCESTER — The committal service for Charles G. Eggloff Sr., 77, who died March 11, 2001, will be held at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, May 19, 2001, at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester, with the Rev. Susan Strang, pastor of the Worcester First Presbyterian Church, officiating and military honors presented by the Worcester American Legion Post 1584.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Robert Douglas Bagg

ONEONTA — Memorial services for Robert Douglas Bagg, 78, who died in Punta Gorda, Fla., on Oct. 31, 2000, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 19, 2001, at the First Presbyterian Church in Oneonta.

The family will receive friends in the social hall of the church one hour before service time.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Jacob Mravlja

DECATUR — The committal service for Jacob Mravlja, 92, who died March 22, 2001, will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 19, 2001, at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Worcester, with the Rev. Edward J. Ryan, retired, officiating.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Helen R. Weber

HARTWICK — A graveside service for Helen R. Weber, 88, who died Feb. 21, 2001, will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, May 19, 2001, at the Schenevus Cemetery, with Henry Geerken officiating.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Steven L. Robinson

MILFORD — Committal and burial services for Steven L. Robinson, who died Feb. 23, 2001, will be held on Friday, May 18, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Maryland Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Lida Mattlage

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Lida Bennison Mould Mattlage, 81, died March 22, 2001, at Hospice of The Treasure Coast after a prolonged illness.

Mrs. Mattlage was born May 26, 1919, in Ithaca, N.Y., the daughter of John F. and Edna (Doherty) Bennison.

She was the first wife of Herbert Jay Mould of Westford and Worcester, and is survived by their son, Jay Franklin Mould of Port St. Lucie, Fla.

She was also married to Douglas M. Roy in the late 1950s, William Baxter in the mid 1960s and Rudolph Mattlage from 1977 to 1981.

Mrs. Mattlage received a B.A. in English and education from Columbia University in New York and an associate's degree in business administration from the Harvard Business School, The College of Banking and Finance, in Boston.

Mrs. Mattlage was an executive secretary, administrative assistant to various company presidents and performed other clerical management duties. She also obtained a Florida Real Estate License and worked as associate for several realtors in Port St. Lucie and Boca Raton, Fla.

She has lived in various towns in Florida since 1969. She left Patterson, N.J., and moved to Pompano Beach, Fla., then made her way north to Port St. Lucie, where she resided for the last 20 years.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 21, 2001, at the Westford Cemetery, with the Rev. Joyce Allen, pastor of the Worcester United Methodist Church, officiating.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Mattlage to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Florence Allen

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Florence Youmans Kay Allen, 100, of St. Petersburg, Fla., died May 11, 2001, at Westminster Shores Health Center.

She was born in Oneonta and moved to St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1974, from Babylon.

She was a retired personnel manager for a New York City Bank.

She was an alumna of Adelphi University, Garden City.

She was member of the Rufus King Chapter of the NSDAR and also the Jamaica Chapter No. 211 O.E.S. She was a member of the St. Petersburg First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She belonged to the St. Petersburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Gamma Fraternity, Panhellenic Association, Friday Evening Club, Goodwill Industries Suncoast Auxiliary, United Nations Association (USA), and League of Women Voters.

She is survived by a stepdaughter, Barbara Allen Georgetti of Seaview, N.J.; several nieces and nephews, including William S. Torrey of Clearwater, Fla., June Torrey Christensen of Northport, Fay Torrey Blair of Warrensburg, Katherine Marshall of Winter Park, Fla., Ken Torrey of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Jim Strohman of Franklin, Ohio; several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Services were held in St. Petersburg, Fla., under the direction of the John S. Rhodes Inc. Funeral Home.

A graveside committal service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 18, 2001, at the Elk Creek Cemetery, with the Rev. Rodney  Johnson of Middlefield officiating.

Local arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Walter Hubiak

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Walter Hubiak, age 80, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, May 15, 2001, in the Mohawk Valley Nursing Home, Ilion, where he had been a patient since May 11.

He was born on July 9, 1920, in Woodside, Pa., son of the late Thomas and Katie Okomo Hubiak.

He is survived by his wife, Madalyn; two sons and their wives, Walter and Margie Hubiak and Ronald and Diane Hubiak; two grandchildren, Chad Hubiak and Michelle Hubiak Hoag; five great-grandchildren, Elijah and Chayndell Hoke, Shailynne Hoag, all of Richfield Springs, and Michael and Lori Hubiak, along with their mother, Antoinette Hubiak Eddy; two brothers and their wives, John and Mildred Hubiak and Joseph and Rose Hubiak of VanHornesville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Shannon Hubiak, and three sisters, Helen Hunt, Mary Oeser and Anna Kuzemchak.

Most of Walter's life was spent on the family farm on Chyle Road. He retired in 1979, moving to the Edick Road, town of Springfield, residence in 1984.

It was Walter's request that there be no calling hours and that the funeral be private.

A graveside service in Lakeview Cemetery will take place at a later time convenient to the family.

Memorial donations may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 524 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Mildred Brownell

MORRIS — Mildred D. Brownell, 85 years old, of Morris, died May 15, 2001, in Morris.

She was born Dec. 5, 1915, in Burlington, the daughter of Irwin and Lena (Sitts) Davis.

She married Merle H. Brownell on June 18, 1988. He predeceased her Sept. 9, 1998.

She spent her childhood in the Burlington and Hartwick areas.

She is survived by her two stepsons, David and Kirsten Brownell, Boiling Springs, Pa., and Gerald and Elaine Brownell, Norwich; her two sisters, Edna Palmater and Irene Osborn of the Meadows; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one sister, Gladys Marr.

She was a Quality Control Technician for Smith Corona in Groton and Cortland for 27 years.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Morris and the Columbus Quarter Church in the town of Columbus.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 18, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Mark Norlund of the First Baptist Church, Morris, officiating.

Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

Calling hours will be Friday, May 18, 2001, from 10 to 11 a.m. preceding the funeral at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church, Morris, or the Columbus Quarter Church, town of Columbus.

Justine Sperbeck

DAVENPORT — Mrs. Justine "Betty" Sperbeck, 80, of Route 23, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta.

Mrs. Sperbeck was born March 27, 1921, in Sidney, the daughter of Sylas and Mabel (Hill) Osborne.

Mrs. Sperbeck had resided in Richmondville for most of her married life. While living there, she was a seamstress at the Ace Glove Factory for several years. Mrs. Sperbeck moved to Davenport 10 years ago.

She was predeceased by a son, Michael Sperbeck, who died in 1996.

Survivors include her husband, Freddie Sperbeck, whom she married April 16, 1949; two daughters, Susan Robinson of Woodbury, Tenn., and Kathy Hall of Nashville, Tenn.; two sons, Robert Sperbeck and David Sperbeck, both of Richmondville; a brother, Robert Osborne of Tokyo, Japan; and nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 18, 2001, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 68 Elm St., Cobleskill. Officiating will be the Rev. Charles Gockel of the United Methodist Church of Summit. Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, 2001, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Summit Cemetery, Summit.

Bernice A. Manzer

OTEGO — Graveside services for Bernice A. (Alger) Manzer, who passed away Feb. 16, 2001, will be held at 11 a.m. at the Alger grave site in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery on Saturday, May 19, 2001. The Rev. Craig Merritt will be officiating the service and will sing a duet with his wife, Kim, in Bernice's memory.

Family and friends are invited to attend a luncheon at the home of Bernice's son, George Miner, in Oneonta, immediately following the service.

Gladys Cook Aspinwall

TAMPA, Fla. — A graveside service for Gladys Cook Aspinwall of Tampa, Fla., who died on Jan. 12, 2001, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 17, 2001, at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht, pastor of the Otego United Methodist Church, Otego, officiating.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Florence Sinclair

CHERRY VALLEY — A memorial service for Florence W. Sinclair, who passed away March 28, 2001, will be held on Sunday, May 20, 2001, at 2 p.m. in the United Methodist Church, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Lyman  Johnson officiating.

Burial will follow in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley.

Arrangements were by the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Dorothy Robinson

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — A graveside committal service for Dorothy Robinson, age 77, who passed away on March 27, 2001, will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. James Barnes, pastor of the Jordanville Federated Church, officiating.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

William Robertson

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — A graveside committal service for William Robertson, age 88, of Richfield Springs, formerly of Ilion, who passed away on March 27 2001, will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2001, at 1 p.m. in the Cedarville Cemetery, with the Rev. George Greene, rector of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, Ilion, officiating.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

George W. Hull

AFTON — Graveside military and committal services for Mr. George W. Hull, 77, formerly of Cherry Valley and Fort Plain, who passed away Feb. 27, 2001, will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 21, 2001, in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley. Burial will follow.

Arrangements were by the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
