Catherine Eldred

FRESNO,  Calif. — Catherine "Patty" Donlin Eldred passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at the age of 75.

Catherine was born in Oneonta, N.Y., attended the Benedictine Nursing School in Kingston, N.Y., and worked as a registered nurse. She was employed by Homerfolks Tuberculosis Hospital and Broome County (N.Y.) General Hospital.

She lived in Oneonta until 1960 and in upstate New York until 1977, when she moved to California. She lived in Fresno for the past year.

Catherine is survived by three children: Nancy Dunkly, a homemaker and church pianist, of Elk Grove,  Calif., her husband, Doug, and their two children; Robert Eldred, a financial planner, of San Francisco; and Steven Eldred, an attorney, of Fresno, his wife, Janine, and their two sons. She is survived by her ex-husband, John Eldred of San Jose; her brothers, Martin Donlin and his wife, Marge, and George Donlin, and their children, both of Oneonta.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her younger brother, John Donlin.

The family would like to thank the staff at Horizon Health and Sub-Acute Center and the St. Agnes Hospice, especially Debbie Baker, R.N., for their compassionate care and support.

Remembrances may be made to any local hospice program in Catherine's memory.

Charles J. Zolon

MELROSE, Mass. — Charles J. Zolon, the father of Delhi resident Virginia Altmann, passed away in Melrose-Wakefield Hospital in Melrose, Mass., early Wednesday, May 30, 2001, following a lengthy illness. He was 85 years of age.

Born in Cambridge, Mass., he was the son of the late Charles A. and Alexandra (Blaguszewska) Zolontkowski.

He lived in Woburn, Mass., for a number of years and also lived in Jamaica Plain and Roslindale. For the past six years he made his home in Wakefield.

Mr. Zolon worked as a chef at The Lobster House in downtown Boston for a number of years and later worked as a caterer.

He was the former husband of the late Virginia L. (Randall) Zolon, who died in 1976.

He was also predeceased by his brother, Walter Zolontkowski.

Surviving are three daughters, Virginia L. Altmann of Delhi, N.Y., Nancy J. Tourkantonis and her husband, Arthur, of Woburn, Mass., and Lynne P. Freitas and her husband, Jim, of Medford, Mass.; a son, Kenneth R. Zolon, and his wife, Phebe, of Cambridge; and a sister, Mary T. Curll of Cambridge.

He was also the grandfather of Christopher Altmann and his wife, Kim, of East Meredith, N,Y., Scott Altmann and his wife, Lucia, of  Washington, D.C., Randy Bennett and his wife, Beth, of Worcester, Mass., and Jimmy and Angela Freitas of Medford; and great-grandfather of Tyler, Sydney, and Kyle Bennett of Worcester, Mass. He was the uncle of Fred Curll and his wife, Ann, and Charles Curll.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.

Donations may be made in Mr. Zolon's memory to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, Mass. 01701.

Arrangements are by the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main St., Woburn, Mass.

Ora T. Dibble

SUMMIT — Mrs. Ora T. Dibble, 86, of Eden Park Health Facility, formerly of Summit, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill following a long illness.

Mrs. Dibble was born Oct. 16,1914, in Summit, the daughter of Hugh and Ora (Woodbeck) O'Neil.

Mrs. Dibble retired in 1972 from the Ace Glove Factory, where she was a seamstress from 1941 to 1953.

Mrs. Dibble worked on small motors at General Electric in Schenectady for most of her married life. She lived in Summit and assisted in the daily operations of her husband's dairy farm.

Mrs. Dibble attended St. Anna's Catholic Church and the United Methodist Church, both in Summit.

She was predeceased by her husband, Omar Dibble, who died Aug. 5, 1974, and a son, Robert J. Dibble, who died July 3, 1981.

Survivors include three sons, Roger Dibble of Hartwick, Lawrence Dibble of Summit, and Vic Dibble of Charlotteville; two sisters, Edna Reed of Schoharie and Margaret Szymanski of Scotia; a brother, Patrick O'Neil, of Stamford; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

A funeral liturgy will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 4, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 68 Elm St., Cobleskill. Officiating will be the Rev. John Roos.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 3.

Burial will be in Summit Cemetery, Summit.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Capital District Chapter, 85 Watervliet Ave., Albany, N.Y. 12206-2083.

Helen R. Brady

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — A graveside committal service for Helen Ryan Brady, 92, who passed away on Feb. 22, 2001, will be held today, June 2, 2001, at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Richfield Springs. The Rev. Terrance Healy will officiate.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Deanna Wallace

NEW BERLIN — Deanna (Miller) Wallace, 43, of New Berlin, N.Y., and formerly of Morris, N.Y., and Brownsboro, Ala., died Friday, June 1, 2001, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born in Sidney, N.Y., on July 8, 1957, the daughter of Ronald and Luella (Dixson) Miller.

She had resided in New Berlin for the past five months and before that she had resided in Brownsboro, Ala., for several years, where she worked as a day-care teacher at Abundance of Love Daycare.

She was a member of the Shiloh Methodist Church in Brownsboro, Ala.

Deanna is survived by her children, Ashley Ellen Kent, Joshua Lee Kent and Thomas Anthony Wallace, all of New Berlin. She is also survived by her father, Ronald Miller of Morris; her brothers, Joseph Miller and his wife, Cindy, of New Berlin, Randall Miller and his wife, Jean, of Ellenville, N.Y., Ronald and Matthew Miller and a sister, Olivia Miller, all of Morris. Several aunts, uncles nieces and nephews also survive her.

Visitation will be on Sunday, June 3, 2001, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.

Funeral services will be private.

The family requests no flowers. Those who wish to do so are asked to donate to a scholarship fund to be established for her children. Donations may be sent to Joseph Miller, 24 Cushman St., New Berlin, N.Y. 13776.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home, Morris.

Marian E. Finch

SIDNEY CENTER — Marian E. Finch, 87, of Sidney Center, N.Y., died Friday, June 1, 2001, at the Valley View Manor Nursing Home, Norwich, N.Y.

She was born May 26, 1914, in Oneonta, N.Y.

She was married to Elwood M. Finch, Sept. 4, 1934, in Montrose, Pa. Mr. Finch died Nov. 6, 1984.

Mrs. Finch has been a resident of Sidney Center since 1934 and was a member of the Sidney Center Historical Group and the Sidney Center Rod and Gun Club.

She is survived by a daughter, Charlene Rutenber of Krum,  Texas; her sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Dorothy Finch of Sidney Center, Ernest Finch of Williston, Fla., Gordon and Carole Finch of Sidney Center, Donald and Susan Finch of Sidney Center, and Warren and Sondra Finch of Sidney Center; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Sidney Center, N.Y.

Friends may call at the funeral home, Monday, June 4, 2001, at their convenience. The family will be in attendance from 5 to 7 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Robert J. Simonds

ONEONTA — Robert J. Simonds, 54, of Oneonta, died unexpectedly at his camp in East Worcester on Thursday, May 31, 2001.

He was born April 12, 1947, in Oneonta, the son of Francis and Frances (Beams) Simonds, and attended Oneonta High School.

He married Sue Ann Graves on July 10, 1977.

Robert served in the United States Army.

He was employed at Corning Inc. for 34 years.

He was a member of the East Worcester Fish & Game Club and had a love for the outdoors, especially fishing, and he enjoyed stock car racing.

Robert was a loving husband, father, brother and friend who will be deeply missed.

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Sue Ann Simonds of Oneonta; daughter, Corinne Simonds of South Salem; two stepdaughters, Christine LaMonica of Brooklyn and Stephanie LaMonica of Portland, Ore.; sisters, Peg, Nancy, Belva and Dorothy; brothers, John, Don, Russell and Paul; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Barbara; and a brother, Gordon.

Robert will be cremated at the Hillington Crematory, Morris.

The family will receive friends today, June 4, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, when those who wish may call.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the East Worcester First Responders, P.O. Box 781, East Worcester, N.Y. 12064 in loving memory of Robert J. Simonds.

Robert's family strongly urges all men to see their doctors regularly and to have yearly physicals.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Benjamin H. Green

NORWICH — Benjamin H. Green, 73, passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at the Valley View Manor Nursing Home, Norwich.

Born Feb. 13, 1928, in Clayville, he was the son of Leander and Ruth Green and attended local schools.

He had worked for the I.L. Richer Co. in New Berlin, until his retirement.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Roger Nurry of North Carolina; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Benjamin Jr., and Kathleen Green of Sherburne, and Jeffrey Green of South Hamilton; two sisters, Musa Hawes of Pittsfield, and Joyce; two brothers, Daniel Green of Pittsfield, and Richard Green of  Pennsylvania; six grandchildren, Tanya Hendricks, Eugene Ryan, Kimberly Whirlou, Karie Ekert, Danielle Green and Nicole Green; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Lee Green.

Graveside services were held at 9 a.m. Thursday, May 31, 2001, in the Burlington Flats Cemetery. There were no calling hours.

Contributions may be made in his memory to the Valley View Manor Nursing Home, Park Street, Norwich, N.Y. 13815.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Burgess Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne.

Edith E. Whispell

ONEONTA — Edith Elizabeth Whispell, 66, of Oneonta, died peacefully at home with her family at her side, Sunday, June 3, 2001.

She was born Nov. 20, 1934, in Oneonta, the daughter of Harry and Ella Mae (Yager) Masker.

Edith was a lifelong Oneonta resident and had worked at the Oneonta Dress Company as a presser for many years.

She enjoyed bowling as well as art and drawing and taught Girl Scouts in Africa several years ago.

She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who will be deeply missed.

She is survived by three daughters, Sheila Whispell of Portlandville, Cynthia Whispell of Oneonta and Brenda Whispell Vaughan of Laurens; one son, Harry L. Whispell II of Oneonta; five grandchildren, April Hunter, Stephani Vaughan, Codie Lansdall, Woody Vaughan and Harry Whispell III; two sisters, Thelma Masker of Syracuse and Mildred Amatuccio of Poughkeepsie; and several nieces and nephews, as well as several great-nieces and nephews.

Edith was predeceased by three brothers, Howard, George and Samuel Masker; and one sister, Pearl.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 7, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Stephen D. Fournier, pastor of the Milford Center Community Bible Church, officiating.

The family will be present at the funeral home on Thursday from 1 p.m. until service time for those who wish to call. Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, and at that time the remains of Samuel Masker will be interred as well.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in loving memory of Edith Elizabeth Whispell.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Harold J. Morse

GLOVERSVILLE — Harold J. Morse, 81, of Gloversville, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville, after a short illness.

Mr. Morse was born in Denver on Jan. 26, 1920, the son of Charles and Carrie Hinkley Morse.

Mr. Morse graduated from Roxbury High School in 1938.

He retired from Catskill Craftsmen, Stamford, in 1982.

He was a member of the Gilboa Masonic Lodge and a former member of the Hobart and Roxbury fire departments and the Hobart and Roxbury Methodist churches.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia  Jones Morse; and three daughters, Barbara (Dennis) Hill, Harpersfield, Beverly (William) Yanno, Gloversville and Marie (Donald) Frederick, Lauderhill, Fla.

He is survived by grandchildren, Dwayne and David Hill, James Yanno, Gina Yanno King, Christopher, Donald and Michael Frederick; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son, James E. Morse, in Vietnam. He was also predeceased by three brothers and one sister.

Cremation was at Hillington Crematory, Morris.

The family will be receiving family and friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, June 4, 2001, at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury. A Masonic service will be held this evening by the Gilboa Masonic Lodge at 7:30.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, with the Rev. Richard A. Dykstra officiating. Burial will follow at the Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Roxbury Fire Department, Roxbury, N.Y. 12474.

Arrangements are by Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Ruth C. Eccleston

NEW BERLIN — Ruth Corrine Eccleston, 92, of New Berlin, and formerly of Morris, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at the Valley View Manor Nursing Home in Norwich.

She was born in Morris on Dec. 15, 1908, the daughter of Jonathan and Mary (Gardner) Turner.

She married Kenneth Eccleston on April 29, 1927, in Atlantic City, N.J. He died Feb. 10, 1999.

She had been employed by the H.W. Naylor Co. in Morris for more than 22 years.

She and her husband had resided in New Berlin, since 1985, and before that they were lifelong Morris residents.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Morris.

She was well-known for her knitting of mittens and then giving them to all the children in the area and also her pride in feeding and helping people in need.

Ruth is survived by her son, Carl Eccleston and his wife, Bernice, of New Berlin; two granddaughters, Carlette Brownell and her husband, Larry, of Amsterdam and Shari Eccleston of Wisconsin; three stepgranddaughters, Ann Downey and her husband, Dennis, of Norwich, Alice Church of Sherburne and Patricia James of New Berlin; one stepgrandson, David James of Morris; three nephews, Paul Knickerbocker and his wife, Helen, of Pittsfield, Milton Knickerbocker and his wife, Dorthia, of Morris and Charles Turner and his wife, Florence, of South Edmeston; along with 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Three sisters, Clara Carpenter, Emma Stebbins and Louise Knickerbocker; and two brothers, Fred and Harry Turner; predeceased her.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, with the Rev. Joseph Fiske officiating. Burial will be in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Those who wish may donate to the United Methodist Church of Morris or the Morris or New Berlin Emergency Squads in her memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.
