Stanley Harrington

ONEONTA — Stanley E. "Stan" Harrington, 69, of Oneonta, passed away on Sunday, June 3, 2001, at his home in Oneonta.

He was born on Oct. 10, 1931, in Oneonta.

He was predeceased by his parents, David and Martina Jensen McKie, and two brothers, Norman and Albert Harrington.

He is survived by his wife, Emily Harrington of Oneonta; six daughters, Patty Vallese and her husband, George, of Binghamton, Janet De-Ritis of Endicott, Theresa Preston and her husband, Dennis, of Greene, Debbie Negros of Binghamton, Linda Zaverton of Chenango Bridge, and Rosy Scarcella and her husband, Tony, of Apalachin; two sons, Edward Harrington of Windsor and Albert Harrington of Windsor; two stepsons, Gilbert Pigeon of Oneonta and Donald Pigeon of Oneonta; his sister, Mildred Harrington of Windsor; 13 grandchildren: Christine Hanyon and her husband, Mark, Paul Ranucci, Jennifer Vallese, Armand DeRitis, Lorie DeRitis, Lena Bengamin, Marie Harrington, Flora Negros, Johnathon Ne-gros, Nichol, Anthony, Angela and Jamie; and two great-grandchildren, Jenna Hanyon and Kayla Ranucci.

Mr. Harrington was born and raised in Oneonta.

He attended Oneonta Schools prior to joining the United States Army.

He was employed with Crowley in Binghamton for more than 13 years until 1986. After Crowley, he was a custodian for the First Presbyterian Church of Oneonta. Most recently, he retired from painting and the many other trades he practiced.

He enjoyed art, especially painting and sculpting. He was also an avid sportsman, participating in hunting and fishing.

He was loved by his family and will be deeply missed.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2001, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Royal Mattoon officiating. Interment will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 a.m. prior to the services.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Cancer Society, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905 in Stan's memory.

Verda M. Ford

NORWICH — Verda M. Ford, 87, a lifelong resident of South New Berlin and most recently of the Chenango Valley Apartments, Norwich, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Wilson Memorial Hospital,  Johnson City, after a brief illness.

She was born July 8, 1913, in the town of New Berlin, the daughter of Emory and Florence (Butler) Manwaring.

She married Merritt L. Ford on Sept. 25, 1935. He died March 5, 1992.

She spent her childhood in the South New Berlin area.

She was a graduate of South New Berlin School and the Utica School of Commerce, Utica.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandra and Eugene Attleson of Cortland and Anne and Andrew Sebeck of Gilbertsville; one son, Emory, and Susan Ford of Florence, Mass; seven grandchildren, Mark, Steven and Andrea Sebeck, Sheila and Eric Attleson, Kelly Ford Lim and Kendra Ford; four great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Alicia, Ellison and Alexa; one sister-in-law, Anita Peet, Oneonta; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a sister, Ione Dixson, Nov. 2, 1963.

Verda worked for AAA in Norwich for 19 years, retiring in 1978. She was a lifetime, dedicated and founding member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, South New Berlin, where she served the church in many capacities as altar guild member, vestryman and ECW.

She was a 62-year member of the Fortnightly Study Club of South New Berlin and received the Federation of Women's Club Dedicated Service Award in 1996. She also belonged to the Hobby Club. Verda was an outstanding cook, an avid reader and a community volunteer.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 7, 2001, at 1 p.m. at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, South New Berlin, with the Rev. Charles  Taylor of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, South New Berlin, officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, South New Berlin. Calling hours will be Wednesday, June 6, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church Organ Fund, North Main Street, South New Berlin, N.Y. 13843 or the Merritt and Verda Ford Scholarship Fund, care of Unadilla Valley Central School, 1 School St., New Berlin, N.Y. 13411.

Louise Benjamin

ARLINGTON,  Texas — Louise Benjamin of Arlington,  Texas, passed away Sunday, April 15, 2001.

She was born Theresa Louise Ferrusi on Aug. 22, 1922, in Munsville, N.Y.

She spent most of her life in central New York. She was a housewife and cared for foster children for more than 15 years. She was a member of the Garrattsville United Methodist Church.

She married Sidney Benjamin on Dec. 6, 1940.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Sidney Benjamin; her daughter, Nancy Eckert; and her sister, Jetty Potter.

She is survived by a son, Ronald Benjamin of Arlington,  Texas; a brother, Pat Ferrusi of Frankfort, N.Y.; a sister, Flora Buss of Moorsville, N.C.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She will be buried in Burlington Cemetery in New York, next to her beloved husband in early June. Friends and family are invited to attend the memorial service and participate in a celebration of life after the burial. The memorial service will be held Saturday, June 9, 2001, from noon until 3 p.m. at the Garrattsville Community House, with the Rev. Rodney Criswell officiating.

Donald VanDusen

ONEONTA — Donald VanDusen, 82, of Oneonta, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born May 12, 1919, in the town of Butternuts, the son of John and Elsie (Webler) VanDusen.

Don was a lifelong area resident. At one time he was a dispatcher for an Oneonta taxi company and also drove the bus for the Oneonta Green Thumb Program. He enjoyed gas engines and going to the gas engine shows and fishing.

He is survived by several nieces, nephews and friends.

Don was predeceased by three brothers, John Henry, Leo and Doyle VanDusen.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Thursday, June 7, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Norman Tiffany, retired Methodist minister, officiating. Burial will be private at the Sand Hill Cemetery, Unadilla. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 10 a.m. until service time, at which time the family will be present.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Thomas Perry Sr.

NORWICH — Thomas J. Perry Sr., 78, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.

He was born on Sept. 8, 1922, in Brooklyn.

Thomas served his country in the United States Navy during World War II.

He is survived by two sons, Timothy Perry of Sidney and Robin Perry of Guilford; two daughters, Jill Pinney of Sidney Center and Jenneen Bush of Sidney Center; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Thomas J. Perry Jr.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Center Emergency Squad or Sacred Heart Church, Sidney.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Miriam B. Brown

MOUNT DORA, Fla. — Mrs. Miriam B. Brown, 88, of Mount Dora, Fla., died Thursday, May 31, 2001, in Eustis, Fla.

Mrs. Brown was born on Dec. 14, 1912, in Taunton, Mass. She was the daughter of Guy E. and Faye Reed Barber. She was raised in Worcester, Mass.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in French from Middlebury College in 1933, and was granted a Master of Arts degree in French from Middlebury College in 1937.

She was a member of Delta Delta Delta National Sorority and the First United Methodist Church in Mount Dora, Fla.

Mrs. Brown was a teacher of high school French, having taught at Northfield Seminary in Massachusetts, and at Cobleskill, Cooperstown, Cherry Valley, Springfield and Ithaca, all in New York. She retired in 1972.

She moved to Central Florida in 1996, from Ithaca, N.Y.

Mrs. Brown was married on Aug. 9, 1941, to W. Dale Brown, who survives. She also is survived by her daughter, Faye B. Steuer, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; her son, Randall B. Brown, of Gainesville, Fla.; her daughter- in-law, Pia T. Brown, of Mount Dora, Fla.; her grandson, Evan R. Steuer, of Austin,  Texas; her granddaughter, Linnea R. Brown, of Orlando, Fla.; her niece, Sarah E. Cummings, of South Burlington, Vt.; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are under the direction of Allen J. Harden Funeral Home, Mount Dora, Fla.

Malcolm Lee Root

COOPERSTOWN — Malcolm Lee Root, 70, of Susquehanna Avenue in Cooperstown, died Monday afternoon, June 4, 2001, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born on March 10, 1931, in Cooperstown, a son of Kenneth W. and Harriet (Bundy) Root.

Raised and educated in Cooperstown, Malcolm graduated from Cooperstown High School with the class of 1948.

He served his electrician's apprenticeship with Langdon & Hughes in Utica.

In 1969, he began his career at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, retiring in 1992 as foreman of the electrical shop.

He also enjoyed rigging sound systems in the Cooperstown area for various organizations and their functions.

A longtime active member of the Cooperstown Fire Department, Engine Co. No. 1, he was a past chief and also served on the Cooperstown Emergency Squad. For many years Malcolm provided the Christmas lights that adorned the front of the firehouse.

An avid NASCAR fan, he often attended the Indianapolis 500 with friends from Cooperstown.

He was also a member of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church.

Malcolm is survived by one brother, Charles C. Root, and his wife, Ruth, of Cooperstown; one sister-in-law, Helen Root, of Greene; and many nieces and nephews, including, Janice Root Tobin and her husband, Roger, Nancy Root Cooper and her husband, Marc, Kathy Root Carbonello and her husband, John, Harriet Root King and her husband, Donald, Robert Root and his wife, Nancy, James Root and his wife, Elizabeth, Karen Root Coldwell and her husband, Bruce, Kenna Root Payne and her husband, John, and Katha Root.

He was predeceased by one sister, Susan Root Fryling, who died on June 23, 1997; and one brother, Kenneth W. Root Jr., who died on Nov. 24, 1968.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 8, 2001, at the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jeff Hale, pastor, officiating.

Immediately following the funeral service the Cooperstown Fire Department's 1952 Mack, E4, will bear Malcolm to Lakewood Cemetery in Cooperstown for a private committal service and burial in the Root family plot.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 7, 2001. Malcolm's family will be in attendance from 7 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Cooperstown Fire Department, P.O. Box 1, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Emily L. Piscitelli

ONEONTA — Emily L. Piscitelli, 85, of 20 Gardner Place, Oneonta, and formerly of Seneca Falls, died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at the home of her son in Maryland.

Mrs. Piscitelli was born in Seneca Falls on Jan. 10, 1916, the daughter of the late Chester and Philomena Colapietro Mark.

She had resided in Oneonta for the past three years, moving from Seneca Falls.

She was retired from the Seneca Falls Central Schools, where she was a cafeteria manager.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Church, Seneca Falls, and St. Mary's Church, Oneonta.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Mary (William) Freije, of Whitney Point; two sons, James (Eileen) Piscitelli, of Maryland, and Mark (Ginny) Piscitelli, of Baldwinsville; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Phyllis and Marie Mark, both of Denver,  Colo.; three brothers, Albert Mark, of Syracuse, Donald (Josephine) Mark, of Whitesboro and Richard Mark, of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Michael Piscitelli, three sisters, and two brothers.

Friends may call at the Doran Funeral Home Inc., 4 E. Bayard St., Seneca Falls, on Thursday, June 7, 2001, from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 8, 2001, at 8:45 a.m. at the funeral home and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church, Seneca Falls, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by the Rev. David Gramkee, pastor. Burial will be in St. Columbkille Cemetery, Seneca Falls.

If desired, contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Dorotha VanVoorhis

BAINBRIDGE — Dorotha M. VanVoorhis, 99, of Bainbridge, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin.

She was born on Nov. 17, 1901, in Westford, the daughter of George and Eva (Barnard) Skinner.

She was the widow of the late Daniel J. McDonough Sr. and the late Leon VanVoorhis.

Mrs. VanVoorhis was a former resident of Worcester, Otego and Albany.

She owned and operated the McDonough Nursing Home in Worcester for many years, and was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Worcester.

She is survived by her son, James P. McDonough of Bainbridge; her grandchildren, Deborah Champlin, Joane Gill, Thersa Liddle, Patricia McDonough, Jeanette McDonough, Daniel McDonough, Michael Mc-Donough, Francis McDonough, Richard Watson, Sandra Rivino, Karen Harmon, Linda Herron, Diane Mathein and Mark Chamberlin; also several great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sons, Daniel and Francis McDonough; her daughters, Eileen Paris and Winifred Chamberlin; her brothers, Barnard, Maynard and George Skinner; and her sister, Frances Skinner.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 8, 2001, in Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Eleanor Ballantyne

ONEONTA — Eleanor L. Ballantyne, 70, of Oneonta, passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at the Green Manor Healthcare in Ghent.

She was born on Dec. 12, 1930, in Cortland, the daughter of Walter and Ethel Benjamin.

She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred Ballantyne and her father.

She is survived by her mother, Ethel Benjamin; her daughter, Myra Hood, and her husband, Ron, of Orlando, Fla.; her son, George Stalbird, of Binghamton; her stepdaughter, Pat Markham, of Oneonta; her grandchild, Judy Patricia Newman; and her great-grandchildren, Ashley and Aaron Newman.

Mrs. Ballantyne was a lifetime resident of the area.

She attended the First United Methodist Church, and was active in the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary Post 1206 for more than 36 years.

Services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 8, 2001, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. William Bouton of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Oneonta Plains Cemetery. The Ladies Auxiliary of the V.F.W. Post 1206 will hold services at 1:45 p.m. prior to services. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of services on Friday.
