Erford W. Olds
OXFORD Erford W. Olds, 81, formerly of Morris, died May 14, 2001, at the New York State Veterans' Home in Oxford.
He was born on Feb. 15, 1920, in Norwich, the son of William and Edna (Hackett) Olds.
Erford was a lifelong resident of Morris and owned and operated a large dairy farm until his retirement.
He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II, stationed in Biloxi, Miss.
He was a member of the American Legion in Gilberts-ville.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Olds of Otego; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Esther E. Butler of Bainbridge and Betty and Richard Walton of Gilbertsville; his brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Sylvia Olds of Tampa, Fla.; and his aunt, Dorothy Gassler of Utica. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Gertrude Washbon, on Feb. 5, 1970, and his nephew, Richard Freeman Walton, who was killed in the Vietnam War on Feb. 5, 1970.
A memorial service with full military honors will be held in Hillington Cemetery, Morris, at a later date.
Mildred Whitaker
COOPERSTOWN Committal and burial services for Mildred Whitaker, who died March 2, 2001, will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Christ Church in Cooperstown.

Henry Howe Dayton
PENSACOLA, Fla. Henry Howe Dayton, 82, of Homestead Village, Pensacola, Fla., died Friday, June 1, 2001.
He was born in Jefferson, N.Y., on Delaware Head Farm and was a 1936 graduate of Stamford Seminary. He graduated from Cobleskill Ag & Tech in 1939.
Mr. Dayton served as a B-17 pilot in the Army Air Force 194143, and was a member of the Stamford VFW.
Following the war Hank was a dairy farmer and maple producer in Stamford, N.Y., where he served on the Board of Directors and as President of the Schoharie County Maple Festival. Mr. Dayton also served as an Elder of the Hobart Presbyterian Church in Hobart, N.Y.
After retirement he moved to Bardstown, Ky., where he lived for 17 years and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bardstown.
He was married to the late Martha Danforth Taylor.
Survivors include two daughters, Rachel Pace of Louisville, Ky., and Ruth Triolo of Albany, N.Y.; a son, Russell Taylor Dayton, of Odessa, Fla.; a sister, Lucille Turner, of Horseheads, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; and his dear friend, Evelyn Caple Smith, of Pensacola, Fla.
Burial services will take place at the Stamford Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 25, 2001, to be followed by a memorial service and reception at 2 p.m. at the Hobart Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. John Stephenson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in his memory be sent to Schoharie County Maple Festival, care of Jerald Lape, P.O. Box 45, Warnerville, N.Y. 12187.

Mary Squaires
CAMILLUS Mary Squaires, 66, of Camillus, went to be with the dear Lord on Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at the Community General Hospital, Syracuse.
She was born on May 29, 1935, daughter of the late Roy and Ruth Gibbons Dewey in Guilford.
Mary married Theodore Squaires on Nov. 30, 1974, in Guilford.
She was employed as a bus driver for the East Syracuse Minoa School District until she retired after 19 years.
Mary loved bowling and always looked forward to seeing the children in the morning.
She is survived by her son, Kenneth, and Helen Merwin, of Lafayette; grandson Jason Merwin, of Liverpool; two granddaughters, Caitlyn and McKenna Merwin of Lafayette; a sister, Gertrude Pierce-Boyd, of Guilford; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Roy and Eliza Dewey of Unadilla, Fred and Frances Dewey of Hubbardsville, and Raymond and Helen Dewey of Norwich; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Manuel and Alpha Dewey.
Funeral and committal services will be held Saturday, June 9, 2001, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. Mary Ann Linder, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Mount Upton, officiating. Calling hours will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Richard J. McHale
CARNEY'S POINT, N.J. Richard John McHale, 63, of Carney's Point, N.J., and formerly of Oneonta, N.Y., passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 5, 2001, in Carney's Point.
He was born on Dec. 31, 1937, in Oneonta, the son of Richard Sr. and Doris McHale. He was predeceased by his father.
He is survived by his mother, Doris Valentine of Otego; his sister, Susan McDonough, and her husband, William, of Oneonta; one niece; one nephew; and their children; a special friend and companion, Virginia Stuck, of Carney's Point, N.J.
Richard was raised and educated in Oneonta.
He loved playing basketball, baseball and bowling while in school.
He was employed with Onyx Co. in New Jersey, handling hazardous waste materials.
Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Oneonta at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, Richard's family has requested that expressions of sympathy be made to the American Heart Association, Mid-State Region 26 S. Washington Ave., Binghamton, N.Y., or the charity of one's choice in memory of Richard.

Janette B. Riedel

Ethel 'Ma' Swantak
SOUTH KORTRIGHT Ethel "Ma" Swantak, 72, of South Kortright, passed away Thursday, June 7, 2001, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.
She was born Feb. 13, 1929, in Bovina Center, the daughter of Andrew and Sophie (Larsen) Reinertsen.
She attended grade school in Bovina Center and graduated from Andes Central School.
She was an active member of the Church of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus in South Kortright and belonged to the Altar Rosary Society.
On Oct. 11, 1947, Ethel married Frank A. Swantak. Together they operated a dairy farm in South Kortright, and she kept a home that was always open, particularly the kitchen, 24 hours a day, especially for a "sweet treat." Her family affectionately called her "Ma" and knew her to enjoy many hobbies, including crossword puzzles and feeding the birds.
Her husband, Frank, at home, and a son, Allan, and his wife, Elaine, survive Ethel. She had a great love for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Nancy Boest and her husband, Bill, Beverly Soule and her husband, Jon, David Swantak and his wife, Gena, Chad, Jesse and Dylan Boest, Courtney and Kyle Soule, and Tyler Swantak.
Three sisters, Thelma Andresen of Afton, Gladys Lay of Bovina Center and Edna Kelly of Delhi; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Reinertsen of Bovina Center and Eleanor Hopkins of New London; and many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
She was predeceased by five brothers, Leif, Carl (Art), Robert (Mike), Walter and Sigurd.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, June 9, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Stamford, with the Rev. John Burns officiating.
Calling hours will be today, June 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., and the family will be in attendance at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.
Burial will follow the service at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Bloomville Emergency Squad, Bloomville.

Doris E. Thorn
ONEONTA Doris E. Thorn, 78, of Oneonta, died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.
She was born June 17, 1922, in Oxford, the daughter of Fred and Flossie (Ketchum) Finch.
She married S. Richard Thorn on Sept. 30, 1956.
Doris worked as a desk clerk at the Oneonta Hotel for more than 12 years. Before that she managed May's Dress Shop and worked at ECD Bendix.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, S. Richard Thorn, of Oneonta; her children and their spouses, Sharon Cottle of Oneonta, Delores and George Smith of Maryland and Douglas and Jackie Cottle of Norwich; her grandchildren, Desiree Cottle, Lisa Knapp and her husband, Jesse, Stephanie Laymon and her husband, Timothy, George Smith III, Chris Smith and David Smith; her great-grandchildren, Kevin, Cole and Katie Laymon and Jordyn and Loryne Knapp; a sister, Irene Hoffman of Milford; along with several nieces and nephews and special friends.
She was predeceased by a sister, Thelma Meyers.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Frank McCracken officiating. Burial will follow in the Milford Cemetery, Milford.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Ambrose Smith
BAINBRIDGE Ambrose Smith, 74, of Bainbridge, died June 6, 2001, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City.
He was born Sept. 19, 1926, son of the late Leon and Viola Baldwin Smith in Cooperstown.
Ambrose served his country in the United States Army.
He married Hedy Schwarz on Jan. 27, 1973, in Guilford.
Ambrose had been in business for more than 40 years, owned and operated Smith Auto Sales and later the Village Pawn and Bargain Shop in Bainbridge. He was known as a character; Ambrose had a great sense of humor and loved jokes.
He is survived by his wife, Hedy Smith, of Bainbridge; four sons, Ambrose and Dara Smith Jr. of Bainbridge, Arthur Smith of Bainbridge, Douglas Smith of Bainbridge and David and Maryellen Smith of Bainbridge; two daughters, Sharon Sanford of Bainbridge and Roseanna and Gary Davidson of Binghamton; stepdaughter, Diana Chamberlin and Diane Curd of Marion, N.C.; four brothers, Willard and Alcina Smith of Windsor, Raymond and Betsy Smith of Kirkwood, Richard and Joanne Smith of California and Vernon Smith of Greene; several grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins; a sister-in-law, Anna Carmody; and Lucy, Ambrose's new puppy that was his pride and joy.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Elma and Leta.
Upon Ambrose's request, there are no services.

Catherine Blau
ONEONTA Catherine Blau, 78, of Oneonta, passed away Thursday, June 7, 2001, at A.O. Fox Hospital, Oneonta, after a brief illness.
She was born June 26, 1922, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Otto and Evelyn (Sartory) Blau.
Miss Blau was a supervisor in the dry cleaning industry in New York City. Before her retirement and during World War II, she worked in Brooklyn, in the defense program.
She has been a resident of Oneonta for the past 15 years and previously lived in Brooklyn.
Catherine is survived by one brother, Leonard Blau of Oneonta; two nieces, Diane Welton-Calchi of Davenport and Arleen Goscinski of Long Island; a great-niece and a great-nephew, Lauren and John Welton; and a great-great-niece, Juliette Welton.
She was predeceased by a brother, John Welton.
A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. Royal Mattoon, pastor of the Oneonta Wesleyan Church, officiating. The final resting place will be in Brooklyn.
There will be no calling hours.

Robert Placek
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. Robert George Placek, 82, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Armstrong Road, Shelton, Conn., beloved husband of Genevra B. Placek, went to be with his Lord on June 5, 2001.
He is survived by nine children: Richard, Craig of DeLancey, Bruce and Keith Placek, James and Terry Lester, Cheryl Gagner, Christine Kiser, and Patricia Moore; and by his two "Florida Kids," Bonnie and Jerry Compton. He also is survived by 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Wayne Lester, in 1992.
Bob was born on May 11, 1919, in Bronxville, N.Y.
He served as a tech 4 in the Army from 1942 to 1945, and earned medals for American service, Asiatic Pacific service and good conduct. He retired from Bunker Ramo/Allied in 1985 after 16 years of service.
He was a member of Palm Lake Christian Church in St. Petersburg, where a memorial service will be held today, June 8, 2001, at 11 a.m.

John W. Tierney
OXFORD John W. Tierney, 84, of Sidney Center, passed away June 7, 2001, at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.
He was born Feb. 27, 1917, to the late Walter and Katherine Shegda Tierney in New York City.
John served his country in the United States Marine Corps during World War II.
John married Jean Swierczek on Oct. 13, 1941, in New York City. She predeceased him in 1965.
He was a self-employed painter for Airel Spray Painters in New York City.
John is survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law, John and Annie Tierney of Sidney, Lawrence Tierney of Sidney Center and Robert Tierney of Vestal; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Robert Baumann of Sarasota, Fla., Denise and Ronald VanLoan of Sidney Center; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He is predeceased by a brother, Alex Woods, and two sisters, Anna Kelm and Mary Bielawski.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 11, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford
Friends may call Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, N.Y.
