Alberta MacDonald

HALCOTTSVILLE — Alberta K. MacDonald, 74, of Main Street, Halcottsville, passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at her home.

She was born Feb. 12, 1927, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Alfred Glass and Elizabeth Herman.

She first married Eddie L. McKenzie. He died Feb. 6, 1967. She then married Roderick C. MacDonald II. He died May 20, 1994.

She worked for the United States Naval Guard in  Texas.

She moved to New York State and took minor children in her home. For the past 26 years she has been a family care provider.

Alberta also ran the Hamlet House Antique business in her home.

She has been a resident of Halcottsville, for 38 years.

She is survived by three daughters, Mary Waterman, Stewart, Fla., Judith Robertson, Halcottsville, and Lynette Morse, Denver; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one niece, Nancy Slauson, Halcottsville; two nephews, Robert Little, Wisconsin and William Little,  Pennsylvania.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 16, 2001, at 3 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, with Vincent Piliero, Elder, officiating. Burial will be in Halcottsville Cemetery, Halcottsville.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, June 15, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Stanley N. Huestis

NEW LISBON — Stanley N. Huestis, 82, of New Lisbon, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at M.I. Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born Dec. 11, 1918, the son of Charlie and Nellie (Dodge) Huestis.

Stanley worked as a truck driver for the town of New Lisbon. He was also a long distance truck driver and had in his early years delivered milk to the local railroad stations.

He loved the outdoors, gardening and picnics.

He is survived by his children, Robert, Stanley, Lyle, Francis; his stepdaughter-in-law, Carol; his grandchildren Vickie, Jodie, Marshall, Janet and John; five great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Amelia Fuller and Ruth Cooper; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

He was predeceased by his brother, Charlie Huestis; and one great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, June 18, 2001, at 3 p.m. at the Burlington Flats Cemetery, with the Rev. Douglas Burleigh officiating.

Wilhelmina George

ONEONTA — Wilhelmina A. George, 93, of Oneonta, passed away on Thursday, June 14, 2001, at A.O. Fox Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born on July 19, 1907 in Brooklyn, the daughter of the late Rudolph and Elizabeth Kramer Albrecht. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Edward F. George Sr. in 1982; a son, Edward F. George Jr. in 1994; and a sister, Elizabeth as an infant.

She is survived by a son, Thomas C. George and his wife, Connie of Oneonta; six grandchildren, Wayne (Eleana) George of Bay Shore, Heather (Al) Medina of Ronkonkoma, Michael (Karen) George of Nashua, N.H., Russell (Tracey) George of Ronkonkoma, Tom (Jessica) George of Marlborough, Mass., and Vanessa (Matt) George of Laurel, Md.; five great-grandchildren, Cristina, Erika, Ricky, Kyle and Harrison; one sister, Augusta A. Unger of Mineola; many nieces and nephews; one special nephew, Richard Unger of Chicago, Ill.; and the family dog, Oreo.

Mrs. George was a summer resident of Worcester from 1960-1967, coming from Queens. She and Edward permanently relocated to Oneonta in 1973, where they both resided until their passing.

Before marrying Edward on March 30, 1930, in Brooklyn, she was a graduate of New York City schools, and the Katherine Gibbs School of Business.

Wilhelmina was a great cook who loved listening to old records, watching movies and taking care of her parakeet.

She was also a member of the Lutheran Church of the Atonement in Oneonta.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Monday June 18, 2001, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Jack Stennett, of the Lutheran Church of the Atonement, officiating. Interment will follow in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Atonement, 1 Center St., Oneonta, or the charity of one's choice in Wilhelmina's memory.

Leona M. Nelson

SCHENEVUS — Leona M. Nelson, 82, died Monday, June 11, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta. She was a resident at the Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born June 16, 1918, in Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Adelard and Marguerite (Desjardin) Charbonneau.

She married Ralph Nelson in 1937, in Derby, Vt. He died Nov. 15, 1993.

Mrs. Nelson moved to Schenevus in 1961. She and her husband owned a dairy farm in Schenevus.

Mrs. Nelson was a member of the Schenevus United Methodist Church, the Methodist Women's Club, Truth Seekers and Young at Heart Club.

Over the years, she was a loving foster mother and enjoyed crocheting and knitting and has made many beautiful afghans and crafts.

She is survived by her son, Robert, and his wife, Betty Nelson, of Crossville, Tenn.; three daughters, Rita Nelson of Oneonta, Doris and her husband, Werner Moennich, of Morris and Freda Treadwell of  Jefferson; five grandchildren, John, Bryan and Rebecca Treadwell, Kelly Thompson and Kimberly Moennich; a sister, Rita Desjardin of Waterbury, Conn.; two sisters-in-law, Albertine Charbonneau of Vermont and Margaret Hanssen of New Rochelle; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by five brothers, three sisters and a son-in-law, Richard Treadwell.

Calling hours were held Thursday, June 14, 2001, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. with the family in attendance 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus.

The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, June 15, 2001, at the Schenevus United Methodist Church on Main Street, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, officiating. Burial will follow at Schenevus Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Schenevus United Methodist Church on Main Street in Schenevus, C.H. Graham Hose Co., P.O. Box 116 in Schenevus, or the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St. in Schenevus.

William G. Estes

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — William G. Estes, 54, of Annapolis, Md., died Friday, June 8, 2001, in Annapolis, Md.

He was born July 21, 1946, to Lionel R. and Doris (Spafard) Estes.

He graduated from Walton Central School in 1964, and the State University College at Oswego.

He was a former industrial arts and driver's education teacher, and was most recently employed as a senior sales consultant.

Mr. Estes is survived by his father, Lionel of Walton; his son, Casey of Phoenix, Ariz.; his brother, John D. of Liverpool; a sister, Dianne E. Leonard of Pittsford; a niece, Julie Leonard; a nephew, Christopher Leonard; and his dog, Shane.

He was predeceased by a nephew, Scotty Leonard.

There will be a graveside service Monday, June 18, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Walton Cemetery, with the Rev. Paul Cronin of the First Congregational Church of Walton and the Rev John Currie officiating.

Local arrangements are with Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the American Diabetes Association, Central New York Region, 1603 West Genessee St., Syracuse, N.Y. 13204-1949 would be appreciated.

Bessie Bullis

ONEONTA — Bessie Deat Houck Bullis, 84, of Oneonta passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born Oct. 14, 1916, daughter of the late Edwin and Lottie Wheeler Houck in Fly Creek Valley.

Bessie married Clayton Bullis on April 17, 1934, in Laurens. He predeceased her on Feb. 3, 1981.

Mrs. Bullis is survived by two sons, Barry Bullis of Oneonta and Randy Bullis of Hartwick; six daughters, Caroline Finch of Bainbridge, June Anderson of Oneonta, Ruth Martin of Kingston, Shirley Oliver of Sidney Center, Joyce Bullis of Treadwell and Penney KleinGardner of Sidney; sister-in-law, Doris Houck of Norwich; 23 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was also predeceased by a son, Gene Bullis; a brother, Edwin Lee Houck and a sister, Winifred Reynolds.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 16, 2001, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. in Sidney at 11:30 a.m., with the Rev. Donna Joy Schmid, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Sidney Center, officiating. Friends may call Friday. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery in Oneonta.

Norma Osterwald

SUN CITY CENTER, Fla. — Norma J. Osterwald, 73, of Sun City Center, Fla., passed away peacefully at her home Wednesday, June 13, 2001.

She was born in Sidney, N.Y., Jan 2, 1928, the daughter of the late James H. Greene and Louise (Van Tassel) Greene.

Norma had previously been employed by the Bendix Corp. in Sidney, and after moving to Florida in 1970, she was employed by the Gulf Stream Council Boy Scouts of America, retiring as office manager in 1991. She was awarded the Silver Beaver Award on April 23, 1990.

She is survived by her husband, Carl, of 54 years; a son, Thomas W. Osterwald and his wife, Jan, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Mark Everman of Tampa, Fla.; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Janet Greene of Sidney, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Family Funeral Care, 1851 Rickenbacker Drive, Sun City Center, Fla., with the Rev. James L. Niemeyer officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Gulf Stream Council, Boy Scouts of America, 8335 North Military Trail, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., 33410.

Arrangements are by the Family Funeral Care, Sun City Center, Fla., (813) 634-9900.

Walter Starkweather

GILBOA — Walter I. Starkweather, 63, died suddenly Wednesday, June 13, 2001.

He was a lifetime area resident. He was born April 7, 1938, to Lena and Walter Starkweather of New Kingston.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Geraldine (Dauley); six daughters, Mary of Gilboa, Connie of Gilboa, Nancy of North Blenheim, Christine of Grand Gorge, Judy of Roxbury and Corrina of Gilboa; a brother, James of Stamford; three sisters, Anna McCumber of Stamford, Daisy Wagner of Walton and Muriel Duncan of Tennessee; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Friends may call Friday, June 15, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 16, 2001.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Veronica F. Nagel

HAMDEN — Veronica F. Nagel of Hamden died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at Wilson Memorial Hospital,  Johnson City. She was 83.

Mrs. Nagel was born on March 29, 1918, in Hackensack, N.J., to John and Christina (Kurchewski) Banicki.

She was married to John G. "Jack" Nagel on April 21, 1935, in Haverstraw. He predeceased her on April 8, 1989.

She will be remembered for her love of family, her crocheting ability and her love of flowers.

Mrs. Nagel is survived by a son, Ronald and Audrey Nagel of Marlboro; a sister, Georgianna "Dolly" Coyman; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was also predeceased by her son, John III, two brothers and a sister.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, where friends may call Friday, June 15, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will take place Saturday, June 16, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of St. John the Baptist on Benton Avenue in Walton, with the Rev. Edward Ryan officiating. Burial in Hamden Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Walton Fire Department would be appreciated.

Grant Buckley

MERIDALE — Grant Buckley, 77, a longtime Meridale resident, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany.

The son of the late Cornelius J. and Lillian (Constable) Buckley, he was born Jan. 17, 1924, in Grand Gorge, and received his education at Roxbury.

Grant moved to Meridale when he was a young man and for more than 40 years was employed as a heavy equipment operator for the Delaware County Highway Department until his retirement.

He attended both the Meredith Baptist Church and the Meridale Community Church, and also enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking.

Surviving are his longtime companion, Yvonne A. Barkman of Meridale; a sister, Mildred Buckley of Albany; and several cousins.

Friends are invited to call today at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home in Delhi, where the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. and funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Mitchell Bush at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 16, 2001, burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Meridale Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet and Son, Delhi.

Rebecca Gross

GILBERTSVILLE — Rebecca Marie "Becky" Gross, 17, of Gilbertsville, died on Thursday, June 14, 2001, at A.0. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was born Feb. 23, 1984, in Oneonta, the daughter of Thomas N. and Debra (Wilber) Gross.

Becky was a junior at Gilbertsville-Mount Upton Central School. A lifelong resident of Gilbertsville, she was very active in school, church and the community. She played varsity softball, basketball and soccer in school. She was a member of Explorer Post 44 of the Gilbertsville Emergency Squad and Gilbertsville Fire Department. She was a major in Troop C Explorer Post of the state police and had attended the National Explorer Post Convention in Atlanta, Ga.

Becky was a member of the Gilbertsville Baptist Church and was a member of the Gilbertsville Baptist Youth Group. She was a first runner-up for the Gilbertsville Fire Department Queen and was also a past fire queen in 1999. She was a certified first responder for the Gilbertsville emergency squad and fire department, as well as being a member of the SADD chapter at school.

Becky is survived by her parents, Thomas and Debra Gross of Gilbertsville; three sisters, Leigh Ann Gross, Sue Ellen Gross, and Kaitlyn Gross and a foster sister, Ariel Mills, all of Gilbertsville; two brothers, Christopher and Dustin Gross of Gilbertsville; her maternal grandmother, Dorothy J. Wilber of Wells Bridge; aunts and uncles, James and Susan Wilber of Franklin, Kathy and Rick Pope of Rockdale, Sharon and Steve Herrmann of West Oneonta and Beth Fite of Boulder,  Colo.; and several cousins. She was predeceased by her maternal grandfather, Fred Wilber, and paternal grandparents Martha and Gordon Gross.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Monday June 18, 2001, at the Gilbertsville Baptist Church in Gilbertsville. The Rev. Randolph Palada will officiate.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego, N.Y., on Sunday, June 17, 2001, after 3 p.m. The family will be present at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, June 17, 2001.

Burial will be in the Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville.

Donations may be sent to the Becky Gross Memorial Fund, c/o Gilbertsville-Mount Upton Central School, 693 State Highway 51, Gilbertsville, NY 13776.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes of Oneonta and Otego.

Roderick Dorrance

BRADENTON, Fla. — Roderick C. Dorrance, 88, of Bradenton, Fla., and formerly of Roxbury, N.Y., and Hobart, N.Y., died Saturday, June 9, 2001, in Bradenton, Fla.

He was born Oct. 16, 1912, in Peterboro, N.Y., the son of John and Emma Dorrance.

In 1931, he graduated from Oneida High School and was a graduate of Colgate University in 1935. He pursued further education at Columbia University.

He married Shirley Pratt, who survives.

He was a teacher and former principal of the Georgetown Central School until 1948. He became principal of Roxbury Central School in 1948 continuing in that position until 1965, when he became assistant superintendent of schools in this area. He retired from that position in 1976, after which he and his wife moved to Bradenton.

Rod had been president of the Hobart Rotary Club, a past master of the S&N Masonic Lodge and mayor of Hobart for four years.

He was a member of the New York State Teachers Association for 15 years, and a lifetime member of the New York State Council of Superintendents.

Surviving are a son, Daniel Dorrance, a daughter, Deanna Cole, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

There will be a graveside memorial service at Peterboro, N.Y., on Saturday, June 30, 2001, at 2 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made in his name to the Memorial Fund of Gulf Lakes Estates, Bradenton, Fla., 34203.
