Dwight P. Dreste

STAMFORD — Dwight P. Dreste, 52, of Stamford died Thursday, June 14, 2001, after a long stay at Albany Medical Center.

Dwight worked with the underprivileged youth at St. Mary's Boys Home in Syosset, N.Y.

After moving upstate to Stamford, he worked at Project Independence in Hobart and later worked for the Upstate Home for Children in Oneonta, N.Y.

He dedicated his life to helping others and had a heart of gold. He will be missed by all.

Dwight is survived by his wife, Joanne Dreste; daughter, Jennifer; his mother, LaHoma Dreste; and sisters, Lorena Reid and LeVone Rosenberger.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. on Monday, June 18, 2001, at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St. in Stamford.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday. Please call the Funeral Home at 652-5007 for time of service.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, under the direction of William A. Tari.

John H. Owen

WILMINGTON, N.C. — John Hewitt Owen, formerly of Cooperstown, died Monday, June 11, 2001, in Wilmington, N.C.

The funeral Mass was celebrated Wednesday, June 13, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Southport, N.C.

Mr. Owen was a lawyer in Cooperstown, former Otsego County public defender and a retired New York state administrative law judge.

Survivors include his wife, Eileen Charles Owen of Bronxville, N.Y.; a daughter, Mary Kathryn Owen of Westchester, Pa.; five sons, John H. Owen of Stedman, N.C., Christopher T. Owen of Brooklyn, N.Y., Brendan P. Owen of Manhattan, N.Y., Timothy E. Owen of Charlotte, N.C., Michael D. Owen of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and a granddaughter, Megan S. Owen of Stedman.

Memorial contributions may be made to ALS Foundation, 21021 Ventura Blvd., Suite 321, Woodland Hills, CA 91364 or Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center, 1406 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, N.C. 28401.

John A. Whiteman

Arizona — John A. Whiteman, 81, of Arizona, formerly of Oneonta, N.Y., passed away on Monday, June 11, 2001, in Arizona.

He was born on Aug. 10, 1919, in Oneonta, the son of the late John William and Marie Stewart Whiteman.

In January 1941, he married Muriel Lundholm.

He is survived by a daughter, Jean Sawyer and her husband, Jim, of Oneonta; Muriel Lundholm Whiteman of Oneonta; grandchildren, Jane E. Sawyer Pidgeon and John E. Sawyer and his wife, Penny; great-grandchildren, Ryan P. and Matthew C. Pidgeon, Brandon Hansen and Emily E. Sawyer; one sister, Sarah Thornborough and her husband, Ernie; one niece, Kathleen Castrovinci and her husband, Jerry; one nephew, Timothy Thornborough and his wife, Karen; great-nieces, Kari, Kristi and Jeni; and great-nephew, Jason.

Mr. Whiteman was a Class of 1938 Oneonta High School graduate who worked for Bendix (ECD) in Sidney, for many years as a quality control analyst.

He was a 65-year charter member of the IOOF Centennial Lodge #447. Prior to that he was a member of the IOOF Junior Lodge. He was appointed Grand Lodge Guardian in 1963, and held many offices associated with Lodge #447. In addition he held membership in Canton David E. Wilber #4 and Royal Rebekah Lodge #161.

He was known as the "oldest paperboy" for the Arizona Republican Newspaper, and retired in August 2000, due to declining health.

He loved to work with wood, and was known for his "green thumb" with his garden and greenhouse.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 25, 2001, at the First United Methodist Church, Chestnut Street, Oneonta with the Rev. Joseph Fiske officiating. Interment will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in John's memory.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Alma C. Downs

FRANKLIN — A memorial service for Alma C. Downs will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2001, at 4 p.m. at the Franklin United Methodist Church in Franklin. Alma passed away Feb. 5, 2001, in New Port Richey, Fla., due to complications from surgery.

Jacob (Jerry) Landy

HICKSVILLE — Dr. Jacob (Jerry) Landy, 84, of Hicksville, died Sunday, June 10, 2001.

He was a loving and devoted husband to Libby, whom he married in 1941.

He is also survived by his loving children and their spouses,Bonnie and Martin Ackley of Otego, Michael and Anne Landy of Rockaway Beach, James and Beverley Carlsen-Landy of Allen,  Texas, and Victoria and J. Lynn Green of Fort Worth,  Texas. He was a cherished grandfather of Kris, Jeff, David and Erik Carlsen-Landy and Danielle and Jeremy Green. He was stepgrandfather to Cindy Peck, Cheryl Rotolo and Nathan Kox.

He was a retired art history professor at City College of New York.

He loved all types of music, gardening, carpentry and electrical work.

Memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia Foundation, the Candlelighters of Greater Fort Worth,  Texas, or the Childhood Cancer Foundation.

Norman G. Perry

GREAT FALLS, Mont. — Norman Gene Perry, 58, of Great Falls, Mont., and formerly of Laurens, N.Y., died Friday, June 15, 2001, at his home.

He was born March 19, 1943, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in  Johnson City, N.Y., the son of John H. and Pauline (Tillie) Perry.

Norman graduated from Laurens Central School the Class of 1961.

He joined the United States Air Force in August of 1967, until July of 1971, some of which he was in Korea. He joined the Montana Air National Guard, 120th Fighter Wing in 1971, after his discharge from the Air Force. He was an air technician in base supply until his retirement in December 1998.

He was a member of the Laurens Presbyterian Church and was active with the Lutheran Church in Great Falls. He also was a member of the Laurens American Legion, a member of the Elks Club for 25 years, The Scottish Rite, Algeria Temple, Master Mason for 28 years, and a life member of the Falcon's Retreat.

Norman was an avid all-season sports fan. He coached Little League and was a troop leader with the Boy Scouts for his sons.

He was an avid reader, enjoying history, military history and science, as well as everything John Wayne. He also enjoyed bowling, horses and spending time with his faithful companion and best friend "Bullet."

He was a loving son, father, brother, uncle and friend who will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his mother, Pauline Perry at Laurens; two sons, David Perry of Grand Forks, N.D., and Scott Perry of Great Falls, Mont.; a sister and brother-in-law, Deborah and Allen Dixon of Stafford, Va.; two nieces, Jamie and James Lowke of Florida, and Jeannie Lynne Dixon of Stafford, Va.; a nephew, John Allen Dixon of Stafford, Va.; two aunts, Janice VanDeBogart of Oneonta, N.Y., and Rose Elliott of Morris, N.Y.; an uncle, Paul Tilley of Suffern, Fla.; several cousins; and very special friends in Great Falls, Mont., Sharon and Rich Paul and their daughter, Dawn Charron.

Norman was predeceased by his father, John H. Perry on April 11, 1994.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Laurens Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Harry Myers officiating. Burial will follow at the Laurens Cemetery with the Laurens American Legion conducting military honors. The family will be present at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St. in Oneonta on Wednesday, June 20, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. The Laurens F&AM Lodge #548 will be conducting a Masonic service at 8 p.m.

The family would like to welcome friends and family to the Laurens American Legion following the services at the cemetery for a luncheon.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta.

Lizzie G. Miller

NORWICH — Lizzie G. Miller, 102, of Sidney, formerly of Greene and Walton, passed away Sunday, June 17, 2001, at the Gilmour Health Center in Norwich.

She was born Jan. 27, 1899, daughter of the late Augustus and Sarah Pangburn Gray in Hamden.

Lizzie married Walter L. Miller on Aug. 16, 1922, in Walton. He predeceased her on Feb. 2, 1966.

She was employed as a school teacher in the Downsville area and the Cherry Valley School District. Mrs. Miller taught Sunday school for many years in the United Methodist Church of Walton.

She was an avid gardener and New York Yankee baseball fan.

Mrs. Miller was the oldest living member of the United Methodist Church in Sidney.

She is survived by her daughter, Doris Frembes of Masonville; daughter-in-law, Azalea Mille, of Sidney; grandchildren, Kathleen, Sylvia, Donna, John, Louis, Jennifer, Charles, Bill and Lois; great-grandchildren, Christy, Lizzie, Joe, Danny, Sarah, Veronica, Jon and Christy; great-great-grandchild, Ethan; sister-in-law, Marjorie Gray of  South Carolina; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by eight brothers and sisters, Martin, Guy, Pangburn, Leon, Lloyd, Katie, Rhoda and Mary; and son, Lee Miller.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 21, 2001, at the United Methodist Church of Sidney, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. David Masland, pastor, officiating. Calling hours will begin at noon on Thursday in the church. Burial will be in Paige Cemetery in Downsville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church of Sidney.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Inc., 21 Main St. in Sidney.

Frances Ellmauer

ONEONTA — Frances Louise Ellmauer, 91 years, of Oneonta, died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born Dec. 20, 1909, in Pierstown, which is slightly North of Cooperstown, the daughter of Jesse C. and Luella (Gurney) Shepard.

She married Henry Andrew Ellmauer on May 5, 1934. Henry passed away April 12, 1988.

Mrs. Ellmauer received her elementary education in Otsego County in a one-room school built on a site that was a part of the family homestead. She received her high school education at Oneonta High School. Her three courses of higher education were received at the Oneonta Normal School, which later became the Oneonta State Teachers College.

She taught in Schoharie Central School from 1930-1934. Later, she taught for 16 years at the A.L. Kellogg School, which became Delaware Academy and Central School, where she retired in 1970.

Most of her life was spent on South Side Drive in Oneonta.

Mrs. Ellmauer was a member of the First Baptist Church, Elm Park Senior Citizen Club, the DAR, and various other senior citizen organizations, too numerous to mention. While a member of the Otsego County Senior Citizen Counsel, Henry and Frances were chosen king and queen of that group.

She is survived by her two daughters and son-in-law, Georgine and Kenneth Salisbury and Joyce Rowe; five grandchildren and their spouses, Galen Salisbury and his wife, Kimberly, Jeffrey Salisbury and his wife, Tami, Le Anne Putnam and her husband, Dennis, Bonnie Sue  Jones and her husband, Rodney, and Michael Rowe and his wife, Karen; nine great-grandchildren, Alison Salisbury, Andrew Salisbury, Christopher Salisbury, Matthew Salisbury, Tyler Putnam, Erik Jones, Tori Rowe, Kevin Rowe and Corrina Rowe; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Ellmauer was predeceased by her husband, Henry Ellmauer; her son-in-law, Claude Rowe Jr.; her sister, Marian S. Eldred; and her brother, Kenneth J. Shepard.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. William Lang, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Glenwood Cemetery in Oneonta. The family will be present at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St. in Oneonta, on Friday, June 22, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. Friends are also welcome to call at the First Baptist Church from 10 a.m. until service time.

It has been requested that, in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy be made to the First Baptist Church, 73 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of Frances Louise Ellmauer.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta.

Robert R. Reed

COOPERSTOWN — Robert R. Reed, 88, formerly of Malone, and Lakeland, Fla., died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at The Meadows.

Mr. Reed was born May 10, 1913, in Saranac Lake, the son of Dr. Smith W. and Margaret (Jenkins) Reed.

He graduated from Union College with a bachelor's degree in economics in 1935.

He married Virginia Moore on March 26, 1937, in Hamden.

Robert was educational director for Scintilla of Bendix Aviation (now Amphenol) in Sidney during World War II.

He later taught math at Clarkson College, Malone Branch.

From 1954 to 1965, he and his wife jointly owned and operated the Hotel Chateaugay in Chateaugay. He then became the first executive director of the Office of Economic Opportunity for Franklin County, from the office's inception until his retirement in 1984.

After several years in retirement in Lakeland, Fla., he and his wife returned to the Cooperstown area in 1995 to be near their family.

Mr. Reed is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Currier of Cooperstown and Marilyn Hopper of Windsor, Conn.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife in 1999.

The family will have a private service and burial at their convenience.

Ella M. Hubbard

FLAT CREEK — Mrs. Ella M. Hubbard, 92, of Flat Creek Road, entered the Kingdom of Heaven on Sunday, June 17, 2001, at Robinson Terrace Nursing Home in Stamford.

Mrs. Hubbard was born Dec. 21, 1908, in the town of Conesville, to William and Angeline (Bartly) Briggs.

She has lived her entire life in the vicinity.

In 1927, at the age of 18, she married Merel G. Hubbard and they have two children, Betty O'Hara of Prattsville and Merel G. Hubbard of Highland Mills.

She continued to maintain her family farm in Flat Creek.

Ella is a grandmother of nine, a great-grandmother of 17 and, most recently, the great-great grandmother of one.

Her life was one of true Christianity, living it honest and upright in all her dealings; she was kind to everyone.

She was predeceased by her husband, who passed away on Oct. 28, 1978.

A funeral service will be held at noon on Thursday, June 21, 2001, at Ella Hubbard's residence, Flat Creek Road in the town of Gilboa. Officiating will be the Rev. Charles Grant of the Flat Creek Baptist Church and the Rev. Paul Buhrke of the Broome Centre Chapel Church. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at the Palmer & Shaylor, Inc. Funeral Home, 63 River St. in Middleburgh. Burial will be in Gilboa Cemetery.

Walter S. Popek Sr.

ONEONTA — Walter S. Popek Sr., 86, of Oneonta, and formerly of Garfield, N.J., died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on Monday, June 18, 2001.

He was a loving and devoted husband to Gertrude (Leissner), to whom he was happily married for 61 years.

Survivors include his children and their spouses, Jane and Dr. Ken Deuel of Gulf Breeze, Fla., Ellie and Ernie Kinch of Walton and Peter and Connie Popek of Oneonta.

He was predeceased by his son, Walter Popek Jr. of Cooperstown.

He was a loving grandfather to Walter V. Popek of Knoxville, Tenn., Rachel Burtner of Walton, Jed Popek of Los Angeles, Allison Kinch of Walton, Jessica Popek of Knoxville, Tenn., Michael Popek of Portland, Ore., Kelly Popek of Oneonta and Lindsey Popek of Oneonta. "Poppy" also lovingly accepted and treated all of their friends as if they were his own grandchildren.

Mr. Popek graduated from Garfield High School and attended Rutgers University.

He spent his 44 working years at Tenneco Chemicals, serving as their main purchasing agent.

A lifelong avid sports follower, his all-time favorites were the Cleveland Indians, the New York Yankees, and individually Bob Feller, Ted Williams and "Pistol" Pete Maravich, all of whom he met in person.

Always outgoing, generous and friendly, Mr. Popek made friends wherever he went, and was very widely known as "Coach."

As secretary of the Fifth Quarter Club and the Boilermaker Club, he organized hundreds of fund-raisers, awards and banquets for high school sports programs in Garfield, getting many famous people to attend as guest speakers.

He enjoyed collecting many things, including toy trains, and was proud to be one of the founding members of the Train Collectors Association.

A private family service was held at Grummons Funeral Home with Fr. Paul Roman of St. Mary's Catholic Church officiating.

The family of "Poppy" Popek kindly requests any contributions be sent to Catskill Area Hospice in Oneonta.
