Vilnis Viksne

COOPERSTOWN — Vilnis Viksne, 52, of Susquehanna Avenue, Cooperstown, died unexpectedly Tuesday night, June 19, 2001, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born on Nov. 7, 1948, in Karlsruhe, Germany, a son of the late Ludolph and Austra (Palavince) Viksne.

He married Paula Lev on April 16, 1974, in Akron, Ohio.

Vilnis came to the United States at the age of 12 and settled in the state of Delaware where he graduated from high school. He later received a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Delaware.

During the Vietnam Conflict, he served as a medic in the U.S. Army.

A self-employed general contractor, Vilnis and his family began the process of moving from Collegeville, Pa., to Cooperstown six months ago. A multi-talented individual, his true passion was inventing, as well as creating stained-glass works of art.

Vilnis is survived by his wife of 27 years, Paula, of Cooperstown; one daughter, Pamela Reeves of Norristown, Pa.; two sons, Brian Viksne of Cooperstown and Christopher Viksne of Collegeville, Pa.; three granddaughters; and one sister, Inta Huffman of Akron, Ohio.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in  Pennsylvania.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Mystic Seaport Museum, 75 Greenmanville Ave., P.O. Box 6000, Mystic, CT, 06355-0990.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Bill Toliver

DELHI — William Grant (Bill) Toliver, 78, a longtime Delhi resident, passed away Tuesday night, June 19, 2001, shortly after arrival at O'Connor Hospital.

The son of the late Blanche P. Toliver, he was born Aug. 24, 1922, in Oneonta, and received his education at Delaware Academy in Delhi.

During World War II, Bill served in the U.S. Army 3rd Tank Division, under Gen. Patton, attaining the rank of sergeant, and was a veteran of "the Battle of the Bulge."

Subsequently he was employed as a custodial worker for many years by several Delhi businesses until his retirement, and for the past five years had been residing at Countryside Care Center.

Well-known in the community, he was a sports enthusiast, a Dallas Cowboys and NASCAR fan.

Bill will be remembered for his friendly smile and pleasant disposition.

There are no immediate survivors.

Friends are invited to call on Friday, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home.

Graveside services with military honors will be conducted at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 23, in the veterans plot at the Woodland Cemetery in Delhi by Donald W. Gleason, Post 190 American Legion, of which Bill was a longtime member. Burial will follow.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet and Son in Delhi.

Cordelia A. Pecor

NORWICH — Cordelia A. Pecor, 102, of Norwich, passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at the Valley View Manor Nursing Home in Norwich.

She was born May 13, 1899, daughter of the late Joseph and Clara Charlan in Richmond, Vt.

Cordelia married Clayton Pecor on Nov. 24, 1916. He predeceased her on Nov. 15, 1965.

Mrs. Pecor was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #277 in Sidney.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Clayton and Frances Pecor Jr. of Dover Plains; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marjorie and Russell Ogden of Berlin, Md., and Connie and Duke Leizear of Unadilla; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was also predeceased by three sons, Norman, Herman and Reginald and a daughter, Arlene Kilmer.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 23, 2001, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 3 p.m., with the Rev. James Hundley of Norwich officiating.

Friends may call Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday prior to the service.

Burial will be in Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla on Monday.

Arrangements by C.H. Landers Inc. in Sidney.

Michael Grimaldi

HARPERSFIELD — Michael Grimaldi, 79, died Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.

He was a resident of Harpersfield for 19 years, relocating from Queens after retiring from his profession of 60 years as a barber.

Michael is survived by his wife of 56 years, Rose Sasso; a daughter, Linda Muller and her husband, John of Harpersfield; a granddaughter, Jamie Muller, and a grandson, Jeston Muller, both of Harpersfield; and a special friend, Jackie Reich of New Jersey. Also surviving are three brothers and three sisters, in addition to many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford, on Friday, June 22, 2001, from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, June 23, 2001, at 11 a.m.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the William A. Tari Funeral Home in Stamford.

Elisabeth Hartwell

BERKELEY,  Calif. — The committal service for Elisabeth "Rusty" D. Hartwell, who passed away on Nov. 3, 2000, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 25, 2001, at the Charlotteville Cemetery.

She is survived by her brother, Rex Hartwell; a sister-in-law, Lynn Hartwell; three nephews, Rex, John and Bob Hartwell; as well as long-term friend, Lois Young.

A native of Argentina, Ms. Hartwell owned and operated "Designs in Wood" for 20 years and was a former active member of the Camp Fire Girls, Girl Scouts and American Camping Association.

Local arrangements are with the E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Carmen A.E. Caiazza

WORCESTER — The committal service for Carmen A.E. Caiazza, who died Feb. 17, 2001, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 23, 2001, at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester, with the Fr. Edward Golding officiating and full military honors presented by the Worcester American Legion Post 1584.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

John Marsico

WALTON — John Marsico, 82, lifetime resident of Walton, passed away Thursday, June 21, 2001, at Countryside Care Center in Delhi.

He was born in Walton on Oct. 18, 1918, the son of John and Catherine (Thomas) Marsico.

He has been a resident of this community his entire life.

He was married to Doris Budine on May 5, 1941, in Walton.

He retired from the Delaware County Highway Department as an equipment operator.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II.

He was a member of the Truman C. Toby Post 32 American Legion in Walton, and an honorary member of the Walton Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Marsico, at home; one son, John Marsico II of Walton; one daughter, Nancy Condon of Walton; and one sister, Josephine Lindhurst of Kingston; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by four sisters, Mary Guarino, Madeline Olson, Theresa Lurenz and Lena Stingone.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 23, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Clark & Winter Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St. in Walton, with the Rev. Edward J. Ryan, of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, officiating. Interment will be in Walton Cemetery.

Friends may call at Clark & Winter Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St. in Walton, Friday evening from 7 to 9, when the family will be in attendance.

Sandra Marzulla

BOSTON — Sandra Lynn Davis Marzulla, born Sept. 30, 1962, went to the open arms of her dad and mom, Lester and Beatrice Davison June 19, 2001, after a lengthy stay at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

Sandy was raised in Hancock, N.Y., and then moved to Masonville, N.Y., after marrying Jodi Marzulla, devoted friend and husband.

Sandy is survived by her loving husband, Jodi; daughter, Sarah Jane; son, Brian Joseph; sister, Donna Reiser and family, Dave, Mike and Joe; brother, Timothy Davis and family, Darlene, Branden, Ryan and Timmy; loving uncle and aunt, William and Lucy Walker; treasured friends, Bev and Jerry Goodrich and T.G. and Larry Armour; and many other friends and family.

Sandy loved and embraced those around her and was always there for those in need.

A memorial service will be held at the Masonville Federated Church in Masonville on Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at 11 a.m. The women of the Federated Church invite family and friends to a luncheon at the church following the memorial.

Family and friends who wish to donate money in lieu of flowers, may donate to the Shannon House, 76 Seawall Ave., Brookline, MA 02446, in Sandy's memory. The Shannon House staff are angels in their own right, providing a home environment and support system for all families in need. They were a great blessing to Sandy, Jodi and their family during their stay in Boston.

Georgia K. Slawson

BALLSTON SPA — Georgia K. Slawson, 84, of Ballston Spa, formerly of Sidney, passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at Maplewood Manor in Ballston Spa.

She was born Feb. 21, 1917, daughter of the late Harris O. and Annie Trotter Edwards, in Arlington, Tenn.

Georgia married William H. Slawson Jr. on March 1, 1944, in Clarksville, Tenn. He predeceased her on July 29, 1961.

Mrs. Slawson was employed as an assembler for E.C.D. of Bendix in Sidney, when she retired after 38 years.

She was also a member of the United Methodist Church of Sidney.

Mrs. Slawson is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Susan Slawson of Saratoga Springs and Gary and Linda Slawson of Binghamton, five grandchildren, two great-granddaughters, two great-grandsons, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is also predeceased by two brothers, Dumas and Willie; and two sisters, May and Jewel.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 23, 2001, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St. in Sidney, at 11:30 a.m. Calling hours begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The family will be in attendance at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad.

Wayne G. Bryden

WALTON — Wayne G. Bryden, of Walton, died on Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at Albany Medical Center in Albany. He was 77.

Mr. Bryden worked as a dairy farmer in Chambers Hollow all his life.

Mr. Bryden was born Feb. 6, 1924, to James and Sylvia Shaw Bryden.

He graduated from Delaware Academy in Delhi in 1942.

On Oct. 24, 1954, he married Grace Champlin in Downsville.

Mr. Bryden was a member of the Hamden Presbyterian Church, the Walton Grange and the Delaware County Jersey Cattle Club.

Mr. Bryden is survived by his wife, Grace; two daughters and one son and their spouses, Ruth and Michael Lucas of Jacksonville, Fla., Laura and Brian Pikard of High Falls, and Perry and Judy Bryden of Burtonsville, Md.; a sister-in-law, Edna Bryden of Hamden; six grandsons; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his five brothers, Jerald, Ivan, Knox, Robert and Merwyn.

His family will receive friends at Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Service Saturday at the Hamden Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Bert More officiating. Interment will be at Hamden Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Heart Association in his name would be appreciated.

Mary McRorie

COOPERSTOWN — Graveside services and burial for Mary Elisabeth ("Betty") McRorie, 81, who died April 1, 2001, will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26, 2001, in Lakewood Cemetery, with the Rev. Douglas S. Burleigh, pastoral care coordinator for Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, officiating. The burial procession will organize at the Gatehouse of the Lakewood Cemetery at 12:45 p.m. to proceed to the gravesite.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Cecil R. Reynolds

MILFORD — Cecil Richard Reynolds, 58, of Brooklyn, Iowa, and formerly of the local area, died suddenly on Thursday, June 21, 2001.

He was born in Oneonta on July 20, 1942, a son of Cecil and Clara (Kilts) Reynolds.

Dick married Dolores Alexander on June 20, 1987. He owned and operated Central Iowa Welding and machining in Brooklyn, Iowa, where he resided for the last 20 years.

He is survived by his mother, Clara; his wife, Dolores; two daughters, Nicole Reynolds and Lisa Grover; a stepson, Travis Alexander; stepsister, Joan Wing; stepbrother, Cecil Reynolds; three grandchildren, Josh, Judd and Jessica Grover; his special family, Dorothy and Ed Konchar and their family; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, Cecil, and his loving grandmother, Ella Kilts.

Funeral services will be held early next week in Brooklyn, Iowa.

Local arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Reta C. Owen

ROSCOE — Reta C. Owen of Livingston Manor, a lifelong area resident, died Sunday, June 24, 2001, at the Roscoe Community Nursing Home, Roscoe. She was 98.

The daughter of the late John and Eliza Hall Crook, she was born Sept. 10, 1902, at Seager in the town of Hardenburgh, Ulster County.

Mrs. Owen was a graduate of Margaretville High School, with a summer course at Oneonta Normal before teaching two years in a one-room school.

She married Bowman H. Owen on Aug. 29, 1923. They spent most of their married life working for the Balsam Lake Fishing Club in Beaverkill. For 25 of those years she was the manager and cook while taking care of the Club House at Balsam Lake. After Mr. Owen's retirement, they sold their new home and land to Zen Studies of Beecher Lake.

Survivors include two sons, Bowman G. Owen and his wife, Jeannette, of Livingston Manor, and Gail A. Owen of Livingston Manor; a daughter, Margaret Huggins and her husband, Kenneth, of Oneonta; 15 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband on July 19, 1982; and by a daughter, Catherine Owen, on Dec. 11, 1997.

Visitation will be Wednesday, June 27, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the Harris Funeral Home, Railroad Avenue, Roscoe.

Funeral services will be Thursday, June 28, 2001, at 1 p.m. in the funeral home. The Rev. Nelson Owen will officiate.

Burial will be in the Andes Cemetery, Andes.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Livingston Manor Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Main Street, Livingston Manor, N.Y. 12754 or the NAAWP (National Association for the Advancement of  White People) P.O. Box 10625, New Orleans, La. 70181.

Arrangements were made by the Harris Funeral Home, Railroad Avenue, Roscoe.

Leland Michaletz

AFTON — Leland P. Michaletz, 87, of state Highway 7, Afton, passed away unexpectedly Saturday morning, June 23, 2001, at his residence.

He was born April 25, 1914, in Litchfield, Minn., the son of the late John and Boldina Delzer Michaletz.

On June 21, 1954, he married Joyce Winner.

For more than 40 years, "Mike" was a driver for the Mirabito Fuel Group of Sidney. He retired in May 2000.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Joyce M. Michaletz, Afton; five sons, Harold and Leland Michaletz, both of Rocky Mount, N.C., Steven Michaletz, Afton, Daryll Michaletz, Endicott, and Brian Michaletz,  Johnson City; five daughters, Laura Wesner, Rochester, Shirley Cook, Berkshire, Karen Stone, Bainbridge, Vicki Michaletz, Endwell, and Shannon Michaletz, Bainbridge; and a sister, Evangaline Cuyle, Bainbridge. Also surviving are several grandchildren; great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mike was predeceased by three sons, Terry, David and Richard; four brothers, Orrin, Marvin, Leonard and John Michaletz; and one sister, Viola Hendee.

Graveside memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 29, 2001, from the Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht of Otego officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Afton or Bainbridge emergency squads.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.
