Linden Summers Jr.

HAMILTON — Dr. Linden Dulaney Summers Jr., 75, of Hamilton, and formerly of Cooperstown, died Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown from complications of diabetes.

Doc, as he was known by everyone, was born June 12, 1926, in Baltimore, a son of the late Mary Owings Summers and Linden D. Summers Sr.

He married Elizabeth (Betty) Jane Ranck of New Holland, Pa., on May 12, 1949, in Baltimore.

Doc served in the North Atlantic with the U.S. Merchant Marines as a medical officer during World War II.

Dr. Summers enjoyed a 50-year career as a clinical psychologist. From 1951-1961, he was director of the Mohican Reading School on Otsego Lake in Cooperstown.

He was a member of the senior attending staff in the department of pediatrics and psychiatry at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital from 1952-1957. From 1957-1961 he served as the school psychologist for the Cooperstown Central School.

Moving to Hamilton in 1961, Doc worked for Colgate University as a professor in the department of education, a position he held for the next 20 years. During this time he served as director of Colgate's Office of Educational Research.

From 1981, until his retirement in 1997, he was director of counseling and psychological services at Colgate.

Doc was an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Association's Church of the Larger Fellowship, serving on its board of directors from 1980-1989. He was chairman of the board from 1985-1987, and vice chairman from 1988-1989. In 1954, he helped establish a U.U. fellowship in Cooperstown, and recently was a friend of the U.U.
