Bernard Johnson

CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. Bernard (Bunny) E.  Johnson Jr., 58, passed away Saturday, June 30, 2001, at his residence.

He was born April 27, 1943, in Cooperstown, the son of Bernard and Annie B. (Hull) Johnson.

He had resided in Cherry Valley for 30 years and worked as a self-employed carpenter.

He was a member of the Cherry Valley Fish and Game Club, and he enjoyed hunting and outdoor life.

Survivors include a son, Jeffrey  Johnson and his wife, Jean, of Sharon Springs; a daughter, Jody and her husband, Darrell Hotaling, of Sharon Springs; grandchildren, Steven and Sadie Hotaling, Felicia, Stacey and Jeffrey Johnson; former wife, Sue Wilcox/Klemarow of Sharon Springs; a nephew, Jaird Johnson; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Johnson, both of Cherry Valley; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Van Johnson; and sons Jerry  Johnson and Jeremy Johnson.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with Pastor Lyman  Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the South Valley Cemetery, South Valley.

Calling hours will precede the funeral from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 3, at the funeral home.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Anna M. Mills

WEST WINFIELD — Anna M. Mills, 87, passed away, June 30, 2001, at Faxton Hospital.

She was born Dec. 31, 1913, in New York, the daughter of Emil and Annie Stichweh Henning.

Anna received her education in New York city schools, and in March 1954, married Thomas Mills, in Rockland County. Mr. Mills died in 1986. Anna and Thomas came to this area from Congers in 1984.

Mrs. Mills worked as a bookkeeper for Mount Ivy Sand & Gravel, in Mount Ivy.

Anna was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Burlington Flats, and the West Exeter Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

She enjoyed visiting with friends and family, her flower garden and her dog, Alex.

Surviving is her daughter, Ethel Mills, of West Winfield; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews Jayne and Joseph Sugar and their daughter, Emily Jo Sugar, of South New Berlin, and James and Debbie Henning and their children, Kelsey and Bryant Henning, of South Spring Valley.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Amelia Horr; and a brother, John Henry Henning.

Anna's family wishes to offer special thanks to all of the ladies who provided "in-home care" for the past four years, especially Norma Young.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Burlington Flats. Interment will be in West Winfield Cemetery. Calling hours are this evening, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Wilcox-Dimbleby Funeral Home, 365 W. Main St., West Winfield.

Please consider memorial gifts to the West Exeter Fire Department or St. John's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund in her name. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Bruce Ostapeck

FLY CREEK — Bruce Ostapeck, 60, of Fly Creek, died Saturday, June 30, 2001, at Bassett Healthcare.

He was born in Englewood, N.J., on Aug. 27, 1940, the son of Peter and Lady (Janson) Ostapeck.

Bruce graduated from Cliffside High School and then went on to Farleigh Dickison and Uppsula colleges, majoring in theology.

He married Aida Pantoja on March 2, 1985, in Yonkers.

Bruce owned and operated his own business, SF Industries, for many years, starting out in Bogota, N.J., where he lived for 15 years, and then moving to Cooperstown in 1985.

He was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening, loved watching basketball and football, playing the piano and continuing in his theological interests.

Bruce is survived by his loving wife, Aida, of Fly Creek; his mother, Lady Ostapeck of Fly Creek; and his father, Peter Ostapeck of New Jersey.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 5, 2001, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, with the Rev. John Rosson and the Rev. John Roos officiating.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, July 4, 2001, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be sent to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or to the Louis Busch Hager Cancer Treatment Center, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Eugene D. Rames

COBLESKILL — Dr. Eugene Duston Rames, M.D., of Legion Drive in Cobleskill, died Thursday, June 28, 2001, from injuries received in a car accident.

Dr. Rames was born in Russellville, Ark., on July 20, 1922, son of James Lee and Eugenia Duston Rames.

He was a graduate of Brown University and Harvard Medical School. He served his internship and residency in Minneapolis. He was a board-certified intern and had practiced in Cooperstown, Hawaii and Oneonta, before retiring from practice in Albuquerque, N.M., and residing in Cobleskill and Cooperstown.

He served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force in World War II. Dr. Rames was a member of several medical associations and was also a member of Cobleskill Lodge 2040, SPOE.

He was married in 1984, in Laurens, to Marion Haith Barber.

Survivors include his wife, Marion Rames, of Cobleskill; three sons, Peter Rames of Albuquerque, N.M., Richard Rames of Minneapolis and Steven Rames of San Francisco; two daughters, Sarah Farfield and Joanne Rames, both of Albany; two stepsons, Timothy M. Wales of Delmar, and Michael Wales of Rancho Santa Marguerita,  Calif.; a brother, Stanley Rames of Hot Springs, Ark.; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, 1 Chapel St. in Cobleskill.

There will be no calling hours.

Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

Robert Lee Sammis

COOPERSTOWN — Robert L. Sammis Jr., 68, of Cooperstown and formerly of East Northport, Long Island, died Saturday, June 30, 2001, at home on Lake Road from cancer.

Bob was born on June 10, 1933, in East Northport, Long Island, the son of Robert and Jenny (Nielson) Sammis.

He married Teri M. Paczkowski on Aug. 2, 1952, in Brooklyn.

Bob retired from the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners in 1995, where he had worked as a carpenter, foreman and project manager. Since his retirement, he managed the trolley system for the village of Cooperstown.

He was a proud member of the Cooperstown Fire Department Engine Company #1 for 30 years. Bob was also a member of the Cooperstown American Legion Post #0579 and Tin Can Sailors Inc. as a result of his service in the United States Navy from 1951-1955.

Bob enjoyed painting and fishing, especially while wintering in Panama City Beach, Fla.

He is survived by his wife, Teri; his daughters, Lyn Weir of Massachusetts and Teriann Sammis of Michigan; his sons, Jon Sammis and wife, Kathy of Massachusetts and Tony Sammis and his wife, Kristy, of  Texas; and grandchildren, Nick and Kate Weir and Zachary and Alex Sammis.

He was predeceased by a son, Robert L. Sammis III.

Contributions in Bob's memory can be made to the Cooperstown Fire Department, P.O. Box 1, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326 or to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Eleanor V.  Schmidt

ROXBURY — Eleanor V.  Schmidt, 85, of Roxbury, passed away Sunday, July 1, 2001, at the Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville.

She was born Nov. 27, 1915, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Herman Wagner and Carolyn Friedrich.

She married Harold  Schmidt on June 16, 1940, at Lake Ronkonkoma. He died Nov. 16, 1954.

She was a homemaker. Eleanor lived in Bovina for nine years, before moving to Roxbury in 1987.

She was an avid reader who enjoyed all types of puzzles and knitting. She also loved dogs.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Charles Messmer of Roxbury; one nephew and two nieces.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, with the Rev. Charles Gockel officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Calling hours are from 10 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at 11 a.m.

Contributions may be made in memory of Eleanor  Schmidt to the Humane Society of Central Delaware County, Route 10, Bloomville Road, Delhi, N.Y.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

John P. Olson

SUN CITY WEST, Ariz. — John P. Olson, 75, of Sun City West, Ariz., formerly of Delhi, N.Y., died on Saturday, June 30, 2001.

He was born Sept. 25, 1925, to Margaret (Steiden) and Oscar Olson in Oak Park, Ill.

He married Faith (Fay) Peterson 49 years ago on April 26, 1952.

He was a World War II veteran, serving with the occupation forces in Japan as an E-7 Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army's Company B, 62nd Signal Battalion, 9th Corp.

He attended Wright Junior College and the University of Chicago where he obtained his MBA.

He began his career as a food service manager for Montgomery Ward in Chicago. He later worked in a similar capacity for RCA and the Boston Naval Shipyard, among others. In 1973, he joined the management (Hotel and Restaurant) faculty at the State University College of Technology at Delhi. While at Delhi Tech, he was active in the College Campus Ministry as treasurer, College Assembly, was advisor to the Green Key Honor Society and was instrumental in establishing the Phi Beta Kappa chapter on campus. He retired from Delhi Tech as professor in 1989.

He was active in all of his church affiliations, including the First Presbyterian Church of Delhi, where he served as an elder trustee and pulpit nominating committee member. At his last church, Desert Palms Presbyterian, he served on the fellowship committee.

He was predeceased by daughter, Lori Ann, in 1962.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Faith (Fay), of Sun City West, Ariz.; daughters, Karen, and husband Vic Porto, of Delhi, N.Y., and Jennifer, and husband Wayne Hicks of Manlius, N.Y.; and sons, Larry Olson of Phoenix, Ariz., and John (Scott) and wife Melody Olson of Cary, N.C.; grandchildren, Francesca, Sicily and Ian Porto, Andrew and Aaron Hicks, Sarah, Jeremiah, Jonathan and Joshua Olson; and his sister, Marie Lange, of Huntley, Ill.; and brother, Thomas Olson, of Kent, Ohio.

Memorial services will be held at a later date in Delhi.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Sun Health Hospice Care, P.O. Box 2015, Sun City, AZ 85372-9950, or your local Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Anthony K. Bray

DELHI — Anthony K. "Tony" Bray, 47, of Delhi, died June 11, 2001, in Delhi.

Tony was born Feb. 26, 1954, in London, England, the son of George W. and Gloria A. (Francesca) Bray.

His parents died when he was a young boy, at which time he came to the United States, where he was raised by relatives on Long Island.

A 1972 graduate of Ward Melville High School in Setauket, he also attended SUNY at Stony Brook and Pinecrest Bible Training Center in Salisbury Center.

He married Janette D. Chapman on June 10, 1978, in Salisbury Center.

A Delhi area resident since 1975, he lived there since then, with the exception of 11 years when he resided in Statesboro, Ga.

For the past six years, he was employed as an assembly worker at Resources for Industry in Walton,

A member of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, in Delhi, Tony enjoyed Bible reading and also possessed an artistic ability revealed in his paintings and written poetry.

Surviving are his wife of 23 years, Janette D. Bray, at home; a son, Benjamin Z. Bray, presently a student at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy; a daughter, Gloria A. Bray, of Delhi; and several cousins.

Friends are invited to attend funeral services at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 5, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home in Delhi, with the Rev. Joseph Manerowski, the Rev. Douglas Harding and the Rev. Jay Francis officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery in Delhi.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday before services, and the family will be in attendance after 1 p.m.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet and Son in Delhi.

Robert Lee Sammis

COOPERSTOWN — Robert L. Sammis Jr., 68, of Cooperstown and formerly of East Northport, Long Island, died Saturday, June 30, 2001, at home on Lake Road, from cancer.

Bob was born on June 10, 1933, in East Northport, Long Island, the son of Robert and Jenny (Nielson) Sammis.

Ross C. French

UNADILLA — Ross C. (Tom) French, 89, of Unadilla, died Sunday, July 1, 2001, at Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin.

He was born Sept. 5, 1911, in Bainbridge, the son of Frank and Ina (Miller) French.

He was married to Alberta Goodrich on April 10, 1943, in Great Bend, Pa.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945.

Ross has been a resident of Unadilla most of his life and was a retired truck driver for Carleton G. Whitaker Inc., of Deposit. He also was a dog-control officer and court bailiff for the town of Unadilla for many years.

He was a member of Joyce-Bell Post #578, American Legion of Unadilla and a former member of the Unadilla Fire Department.

Ross is survived by his wife, Alberta French, of Unadilla; a son and daughter-in-law, Chester and Donna French, of Unadilla; a daughter, Madeline Jackson; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son, Frank French, in 1980.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 13, 2001, in Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Unadilla, with the Rev. R. Michael Amos, pastor of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Unadilla, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Fire Department Rescue Truck Fund.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home in Unadilla.
