Elizabeth Whitehead

SIDNEY — Elizabeth Whitehead, 89, formerly of Afton, passed away Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at the Skilled Nursing Facility in Sidney.

She was born Oct. 5, 1911, daughter of the late Louis and Elizabeth McEvoy Bretz in Hempstead.

Elizabeth married Eugene Whitehead on Oct. 5, 1929. He predeceased her on Feb. 4, 1984.

She is survived by her daughter, Betty Jean Hadden, of Sidney; and grandchildren, Kal Hadden of Chenango Bridge, Karen Hadden Wolf of Cedar Grove, N.J., and Kim Hadden of West Caldwell, N.J.; great-grandchildren, Michael and Patrick Wolf and Courtney Hadden; two sons, Louis Whitehead of Bainbridge and Steve Whitehead; five more grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Friday, July 6, 2001, at Glenwood Cemetery in Afton at 2 p.m.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad.

Georg Truby

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Georg Roy Truby, 48, passed away Monday, May 28, 2001, in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Georg was born in Torrington, Conn.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving in the Vietnam War.

He moved to Florida four years ago from Hartwick, N.Y.

He enjoyed Harleys, cooking, woodworking, gardening and his many friends.

He will be forever missed by his fiancee and best friend of 18 years, Peggy Sue Minnich. Also surviving are his father, Warren Truby; two sons, Adam Church and Jessie Truby; three daughters, Heather Freeburg, Aura Truby and Cherokee Truby; two brothers, Ed and David Truby; his grandson, Jeremy, and son-in-law, Randy Freeburg.

A beautiful memorial service was held in Daytona Beach, where he was honored by the Patrick Air Force Base color guard and was fondly remembered by many friends and co-workers.

A second memorial service will be held in Cooperstown in the fall.

Robert W. Beebe

COOPERSTOWN — Robert W. Beebe Jr., 56, of Leatherstocking Street in Cooperstown, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at home.

He was born on Sept. 26, 1944, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, a son of Robert W. Sr. and Ellen (Knapp) Beebe.

Raised in the town of Springfield, Bob graduated from Springfield High School with the Class of 1962. He then attended Delhi Agricultural and Technical School, graduating in 1964, with a degree in business administration.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam era and was involved in the 1968 Tet Offensive. Following his honorable discharge from the military he returned to Cooperstown and started his employment as a bartender at the Cooperstown Vets' Club, a position he held until his death. For brief periods of time he was also employed as a bartender at The Bold Dragoon, as well as for Erastus Bouton at his greenhouse in Oaksville.

Bob was a member of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown.

He also enjoyed attending sporting events at Colgate University in Hamilton.

Bob is survived by his mother, Mrs. Ellen Beebe of Cooperstown; two sisters, Charlotte Patrick and her husband, Lee, of Lexington, Ky., and Janet Easton of Largo, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Karen Beebe of Roscoe, Pa.; one niece, Ellen Beebe; and three nephews, Nicholas and Andrew Beebe and Trevor Easton.

He was predeceased by his father, Robert W. Beebe Sr., who died March 14, 1996; and his brother, Wayne Beebe, who died Dec. 6, 1999.

A military honors service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 6, 2001, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, conducted by members of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday morning from 10 a.m. until service time when Bob's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Cooperstown Fire Department, P.O. Box 1, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

James A. Perry

OTEGO — Mr. James A. Perry, 80 years, of Otego, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at Wilson Memorial Hospital,  Johnson City.

He was born Feb. 11, 1921, in Dolgeville, the son of John H. and Florence J. (Egelston) Perry.

Jim graduated from Poland Central School.

He married Eva E. Barriger, who predeceased him on May 20, 1985.

James served in the United States Army during World War II.

He was a lathe operator at Bendix-Scintilla, Sidney, retiring Feb. 25, 1983. He also worked for the former GLF Feed and Farm Store in Otego.

Jim was an active member of the Otego Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon of the church and also a Sunday school teacher.

He is survived by eight stepchildren and their spouses, James Carney of Utica, Mrs. William (Marion) Massey of Bridgewater, Mrs. Walter (Edith) Dennison of Richfield Springs, Mrs. John (Peg) Gardner of Sauquoit, Mrs. Claude (Eva) Davis of Edmeston, Mrs. Chet (Alberta) Seaman of Mohawk, Mrs. Ray (Isabelle) Eaton of Herkimer, and Mrs. Richard (Sandra) Havens of Poland; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a best friend and companion, Margaret Crandell of Otego and her children, Linda Perry, Rose Cotten, Helen and Richard Stanets, Mike and Richie, and Jake Crandell. He also is survived by several nieces and nephews.

James was predeceased by a stepson, John Carney Jr.; a sister, Elsie Barley; and a brother, John Perry.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 6, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Otego Baptist Church, Main Street, Otego, with the Rev. Craig Merritt, pastor of the Otego Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at the Otego Evergreen Cemetery.

Friends may call at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until service time at which time the family will be present.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Otego Baptist Church, 101 Main St., Otego, N.Y. 13825 in loving memory of James A. Perry.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Wilson Memorial Hospital for their loving care to Jim.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.

Karla Mary Snyder

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Karla Mary Snyder, age 45, of Lakeview Avenue, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 3, 2001, in her home.

Daughter of the late Karl and Mary Vertucci Brown, she was born on July 23, 1955, in Richfield Springs.

She graduated from Richfield Springs High School, Class of 1973. She furthered her education at Cazenovia College, where she received a two-year degree in early childhood education.

From 1975 until 1982, Karla had owned and operated the Peppermint Patty Nursery School in Richfield Springs.

On Oct. 11, 1980, she married Gary W. Snyder in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs.

In 1988, she worked as a special education teacher for the Pathfinder Village in Edmeston, retiring in 1990.

Her interests were with the Jordanville Public Library, where she held summer reading programs. She also did volunteer work for the American Cancer Society.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs.

Surviving are her beloved husband of 20 years, Gary; one brother, Gerard J. Brown of Richfield Springs; her mother-in-law, Mildred Paine of Herkimer; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Frank E. Snyder.

Funeral from J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 W. James St., Richfield Springs, will be held on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Terrance Healy officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Jordanville Public Library. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Andrew S. LaFever

BINGHAMTON — Andrew S. LaFever, 60, of Castle Creek Road, Binghamton, passed away Sunday, July 1, 2001, at Saranac Lake doing what he loved most, canoeing.

He was predeceased by his father, Edwin.

He is survived by one son, Christopher A. LeFever, Binghamton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Maureen and Christopher App, Castle Creek, and Lorie and Richard Judd, Chenango Bridge; six grandchildren, Christopher and Nicole LeFever, Gretchen and Krystal App, Chantelle and Savanah Judd; his children's mother and friend, Janice Allen, Binghamton; his mother, Thelma Andreson, Afton; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald and Charlene LaFever, Norwich, and James and Marlene LaFever, Sidney Center; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley and Jerry Young, Delaware, and Christine and Gary Wilson, Sidney; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was a member of Roofers Union Local 203 for 37 years. He was an avid canoeist and participated in the General Clinton Canoe Regatta since 1963.

He loved all children and especially enjoyed his grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. from the Wm. R. Chase & Son Funeral Home, 737 Chenango St., Port Dickinson. Burial will be in Glen Castle Cemetery.

James V. Meehan

MARGARETVILLE — James V. Meehan Jr., 60, of Margaretville, passed away July 3, 2001, at Kingston Hospital, Kingston.

He was born Nov. 4, 1940, in Brooklyn, son of James V. Meehan Sr. and Dorothy Cooper.

He married Catherine P. Hoffman on Aug. 18, 1962, in New Hyde Park.

He was a well-known carpet installer for many years before moving to the Margaretville area and starting his own business as Carpet by Jimmy, which is now being operated by his son.

Jim will be remembered for his sense of humor, his love for his family and the enjoyment he received from traveling and deep sea fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine P. Meehan, Margaretville; son, James M. Meehan, Margaretville; daughter, Lorriane Meehan, Kingston; mother and father, James and Dorothy Meehan; two brothers, Dennis and Paul Meehan; one sister, Laura Giordano; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 6, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Calling hours will be held at noon on Friday until service time at 1 p.m.

Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Clara Bishop Scavo

ONEONTA — Funeral services for Clara Bishop Scavo, age 82, of Schenectady, and previously of Oneonta, who died Jan. 22, 2001, will be held at graveside in Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, on Friday, July 6, 2001, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Robert Longobucco, associate pastor of the St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, officiating.

Paul Eugene Orr

PRINCETON, N.J. — Paul Eugene Orr Jr., 89, a resident of Princeton, N.J., for 50 years, died June 28, 2001, at home.

He was born on Dec. 17, 1911, in Atlanta to Seabie (Adams) and Paul Eugene Orr.

He was married to the late Margaret (Campbell) Orr for 51 years.

Survivors include his son, Paul E. Orr III of South New Berlin, and daughter-in-law, Dorothy Sanders Orr of Princeton Junction, N.J.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia (Orr) and James J. O'Brien of Medway and Dennis Village, Mass., and Pamela (Orr) and John R. Marck of Acton, Mass.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He also leaves one brother, Samuel B. Orr of Tucson, Ariz.; and a sister, Cynthia (Orr) Clement of Spanish Fort, Ala.

He also was the brother of the late Charles A. Orr and Seabie (Orr) Carver.

Mr. Orr graduated from Flushing High School in Flushing. While in high school, he was very active in Boy Scouts and attained the rank of Eagle Scout. To accomplish this, he blazed a portion of the Appalachian Trail in the  White Mountains of New Hampshire.

He took the pre-law course at the University of Virginia and graduated from New York University School of Business with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1937. During that time, he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity and Beta Gamma Sigma honorary business fraternity.

Then he was associated with various insurance agencies and earned C.L.U. status. He lectured at New York University School of Business and wrote for various insurance publications.

In 1943, he began his 37 year association with Management Planning Inc. as its president and CEO. They were first located in New York City and relocated to Princeton in 1951.

During his Princeton years, Orr was involved in many organizations. He was president of the United Community Fund in 1961. In 1964, he received the Gerard B. Lambert Community Service Award. From 1963-1978, he served on the Palmer Square Inc. board of directors and from 1973-1982, on the board of Princeton Bank and Trust.

He had been a member of the Princeton Rotary Club since 1954, where he held many offices, including serving as president from 1968-1969; foundation trustee 1966-1978 and 1981-1982; foundation president 1970-1972; and honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. He frequently made presentations to the club, along with other members, on the financial prospects for the coming years.

The Nassau Club held many memories for him. Being a member of the "Saturday Lunch Bunch" meant so much. Herbert W. Hobler describes the group as "The Saturday Lunch Bunch whose weekly fellowship would reshape the world in their own image." Paul also enjoyed his long-time membership at Springdale Golf Club.

A memorial service for Paul Orr will be held on Monday, July 16, 2001, at 11:30 a.m. at the Mather-Hodge Funeral Home, 40 Vandeventer Ave. in Princeton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Princeton Hospice, 208 Bunn Drive, Princeton, NJ 08540.

Leta S. Camp

PITTSFIELD — Leta S. Camp, 92, of Pittsfield, died July 5, 2001, at the Chase Nursing Home in New Berlin.

She was born July 20, 1908, in Edmeston, the daughter of Irwin Stephens and Edna Rose.

She married Harold A. Camp on Nov. 20, 1940, in New Berlin. Her husband died Nov. 13, 1984.

She spent her childhood in Edmeston.

She graduated from Edmeston High School, Oneonta State Normal and Buffalo State Normal. Both are now part of SUNY.

She is survived by two sons, Lyle (Bobbie), of Greensboro, N.C., and James of Webster; grandchildren, Lisa (Lee) Sandridge, Jeremy, Cynthia (Gary) Rahn and Jason; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Caleb and Bethany; a stepgrandson; two stepgreat-granddaughters; a stepgreat-great-granddaughter; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She began teaching in a one-room rural schoolhouse and taught in three such schools, the last being Hobken, where she was the last teacher, due to centralization of New Berlin. She then taught in South Edmeston and moved on to New Berlin. She also taught in Gilbertsville and South New Berlin.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of New Berlin where she was a deaconess, missions treasurer for many years, Sunday school teacher and worked the Vacation Bible School program.

She belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star where she served as matron many years and was district deputy grand matron in 1965. She was a member of the Wharton Valley Grange, Otsego County Pomona Grange and State Grange. She was also a member of the Edmeston and New Berlin Senior Citizens clubs.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 7, 2001, at the First Baptist Church in New Berlin at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Conald Aubrey and the Rev. Allen Carpenter officiating.

Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery in New Berlin.

Calling hours are on Friday, from 6 to 9 p.m., at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.

Donations can be made to the American Heart Fund or the American Cancer Fund.

Patsy J. DeAndrea

FRANKLIN — Patsy J. DeAndrea, 78, of Franklin, passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was born Aug. 8, 1922, in Dumont, N.J., the son of John and Rose (Rucereto) DeAndrea.

He married Jean Sturcke on June 6, 1948.

Pat was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

In 1960, he moved to Franklin, where he opened and operated Pat's Luncheonette and Laundromat, and Pat's Fix-It Shop.

He was a member of the Franklin Catholic Community of Sacred Heart Church in Sidney; the Franklin American Legion, in which he served as chaplain for a number of years; and a former member of the Franklin Recreation Committee and the Franklin Bowling Team. He was also a member of the Franklin Rotary, and a Paul Harris Fellow.

Pat served as the Franklin town clerk for 16 years and was a councilman on the town board.

He is survived by his wife, Jean DeAndrea of Franklin; his children and their spouses, James and Denise DeAndrea of Oneonta, Paul and Linda DeAndrea of Franklin, Eileen and Todd Beverly of East Bloomfield and Celia and Kenneth Rankin of Webster; and his grandchildren, John, Elise and Patrick DeAndrea, William Beverly and Josh LeBeau.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 7, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Franklin United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Gordon Polenz, pastor of Sacred Heart Church and the Franklin Catholic Community, officiating. Burial will follow in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery in Franklin.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. on Friday in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home in Franklin. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. A vigil service will be held at 8 p.m., with the Rev. Michael Donnell, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, the Franklin Emergency Squad or the Franklin Rotary Club.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home in Franklin.
