Mabel T. Smith

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Mabel T. Smith, 91, of Woodside Hall in Cooperstown, formerly of Lake Street, died Monday evening, July 9, 2001, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born on Dec. 1, 1909, in Middlefield, a daughter of Jay and Eliza (Fort) Tyler.

She was married to Leland M. Smith on June 20, 1932, in Cooperstown. Leland died on May 30, 1981.

A lifelong area resident, Mabel graduated from Westford Union School in 1928, and attended the Richfield Springs Teacher's Training School. For a time she taught elementary education in a one-room school house in the town of Westford. From 1953 until her retirement in 1973, Mabel was employed at Cooperstown Central School, in the custodial department.

During the summers, she was employed by the Steven C. Clark Sr., Steven C. Clark Jr. and the F. Ambrose Clark families in Cooperstown.

Mabel will be remembered for her hard work and dedication to her family.

She was an active member of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church and, for many years, taught Sunday school at the church.

Surviving are a son, Ronald L. Smith, and his wife, Barbara, of Valatie; three daughters, Glenda Prior, of Valatie, Beverly Payne, of Pawling, and Carol Penk, and her husband, Albert, of Selkirk; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a grandson, Page Payne Jr., and a brother, Claude Tyler.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 12, 2001, at the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. M. Lynn Snyder, pastor of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, July 12, from noon until service time, when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to the Tribute Fund, Bassett Hospital, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Clarence Glenn Cooke

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Clarence Glenn Cooke, 84, a resident of Montgomery, Ala., died Thursday, April 5, 2001.

Mr. Cooke was born April 1, 1917, and raised in Morris. He graduated from Morris Central School in 1937.

Mr. Cooke was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

As a devoted Christian, Mr. Cooke was an active member of Eastern Hills Baptist Church from 1967 through the late 1990s. He participated in Carpenters for Christ and Prison Ministries. He also donated his time to the Lauback Program, helping individuals learn to read and write.

Mr. Cooke is survived by his wife, Bess Keith Cooke; three sons, Ronald Cooke (Sheri), of Orlando, Fla., Rodney Cooke (Katherine), of Mobile, Ala., and Kevin Cooke (Pamela), of Montgomery, Ala.; one brother, Stanley Cooke Davis, of Ft. Edward; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by daughters, Mary Beth Cooke and Robyn Thompson; and a brother, Kenneth Cooke.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 7, 2001, at 2 p.m. from Leak-Memory Chapel, with Dr. Rick Marshall and the Rev. Larry Armstrong officiating. Burial followed in Greenwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Robert N. Jones, Robert Culpepper, Wesley Cooke, Lucas Cooke, Wayne Keith, Charles Keith and Keith Cooke.

Visitation was held Saturday, April 7, 2001, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Leak-Memory Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to your favorite charity.

Arrangements were by the Leak-Memory Chapel.

Lois June Lyons

HARPERSFIELD — Lois June Lyons, 69, of Harpersfield, passed away Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

She was born Aug. 9, 1931, in Rockland County, the daughter of James E. and Lillian (Osborn) Osborne.

Her husband, Frances Herbert Lyons, and her grandson, Ellsworth Charles Lyons Jr., predeceased her.

She had been employed by the Grand Union Company in Airmont as a meat cutter, before moving to Harpersfield.

Mrs. Lyons is survived by a son, Ellsworth (Chuck) Lyons, and his longtime companion, Heather Conlin, of Harpersfield; a daughter, Donna Bev, and her husband, Randy, of Fallsburgh; and grandchildren, Garrett Lyons, Trever Lyons, Johnathan Conlin, Ronald Medico, Samantha Medico, Jennifer Medico, Ricky Medico, Roy Medico, Vanessa Lyons, Rebecca Lyons, Veronica and mother, Julia Lyons; and many loving friends.

She was known to all as "Ma."

A special thank you to her dearest and closest friends: Ruth Morrell, Bonnie Simmons, Phil Simmons, Howard Conlin Sr., Nora, Emma, Mrs. Pricilla Fuller, Dr. Mulik and his staff and all the friends from Clapper Hollow.

Funeral services will take place on Thursday, July 12, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Hobart, with the Rev. Bert More officiating. Calling hours will be on Wednesday, July 11, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Ellsworth Lyons.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home in Hobart.

Sheryl Howard

WEST LAWN, Pa. — Sheryl Jean Howard, 46, of 124 West Lawn Ave. in West Lawn, Pa., and formerly of New York, died Saturday, July 7, 2001, at 1:30 p.m. in her residence, of natural causes.

She was the wife of Russell L. Howard.

Born in North Tonawanda, she was a daughter of Doris (Warrender) Mixon, of North Tonawanda, and the late Elvin Mixon.

She was employed in the health-care industry for 16 years, the last five years as a registered nurse with Berks Visiting Nurses in Wyomissing, Pa., last working in 1999.

She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in West Lawn, Pa.

She graduated from North Tonawanda High School; Baptist Bible College in Clark Summit, Pa., with a bachelor's degree in religious education; Gateway Technical Institute in Kenosha, Wis. with an LPN degree; and the State University College of Technology at Delhi with her R.N. degree.

In addition to her mother and husband, she is also survived by her maternal grandmother, Violett (Lyle) Warrender, of North Tonawanda; a foster daughter, Wendy Heath, of Syracuse; a foster son, James Northrop, in New York state; a brother, Craig Mixon, of Columbia, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, July 12, 2001, at 4 p.m. in Antioch Baptist Church (West Lawn Boro Building, Banquet Hall) 103 Woodside Ave., West Lawn, PA 19609.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made in Sheryl's memory to her church.

Jessica Bookhout

SWIFTWATER, Pa. — Jessica Dawn Bookhout, 3, of Swiftwater, Pa., died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Hershey Medical Center.

Born in East Stroudsburg, Pa., she was the daughter of Shawn and Jill (Dilello) Bookhout.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a sister, Danielle Bookhout, at home; maternal grandparents, John and Dawn Dilello, of Oneonta; paternal grandparents, Marion Bookhout, of Hobe Sound, Fla., and Benjamin Bookhout, of Oneonta; great-grandfather, Howard Truscott, of Hobe Sound, Fla.; great-grandmother, Carrie Bookhout, of Oneonta; aunts, Robin Winans, of Sidney, Julie Zaveral, of Mount Upton, and Jo Ann Winn, of Oneonta; uncles, Gary and Jay Dilello, of Oneonta, and Tom Bookhout, of Wichita, Kan.; and several cousins.

The Rev. John Charnock will conduct a memorial service at 3 p.m. Friday, July 13, 2001, at the Mount Pocono United Methodist Church.

Please make memorial donations to the Mount Pocono United Methodist Church, Pocono Boulevard and Church Streets, Mount Pocono, PA 18344; the Ronald McDonald House, 500 University Drive, Hershey, PA 17033; or the Easter Seals Society, 109 Seven Bridges Road, East Stroudsburg, PA 18301.

Cremation services were provided by Bolock Funeral Home at Routes 940 and 390 in Paradise Valley, Pa.

Melissa M. Ross

DOWNSVILLE — Melissa M. Ross, 41, of Downsville, passed away unexpectedly at her residence Saturday, July 7, 2001.

She was born April 7, 1960, in Syracuse, the daughter of Emory and Rose Mary (Tamblin) Ross.

Melissa was previously employed at St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse and has been a resident of Downsville for the past two years.

She is survived by a daughter, Rosie Hayden, of Syracuse; a son, Robert Ross, of Syracuse; a brother, David Groff, of Vestal; and a sister, Mary Ellen Stevenson, of Indiana.

Funeral services will be held later in Watertown. Burial will be at Redwood Cemetery in Thresa.

Funeral arrangements are by Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home in Oneonta.

David A. Novak

BATAVIA — Mr. David A. Novak, 51, of Batavia, passed away Monday, July 9, 2001, in the afternoon at Rochester General Hospital.

He was born Dec. 9, 1949, in New Berlin, the son of the late Joseph Novak and Elizabeth Lynn.

Mr. Novak had been employed by Diagnostic X-Ray Service Inc., in Williamsville, for the last year, and before that he was administrator and part owner of Batavia Nursing Home for 29 years.

He was a member of District 10 New York State Health Facilities Association being involved with the Convention Committee and the Executive Committee. He was a member of the American College of Health Administrators. He was a member of St. Cecilia's R.C. Church in Oakfield, a member of Batavia Kiwanis Club and past president. He initiated the Golden Olympics in the Genesee County area for the last 18 years. Mr. Novak was a director of the Genesee Orleans Home Makers Association and a board member of the Salvation Army in Batavia.

He was an avid motorcycle enthusiast having founded the Chapter P. Golden Wing Road Riders Association of Batavia, and he was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. He was a former member of the Batavia Chapter of Ducks Unlimited.

He was predeceased by his parents and son, Chad M. Novak, who died in 1989.

He is survived by his son, Matthew D. Novak of Batavia; daughter, Danielle L. Novak of Batavia; brothers, Joseph (Marci) Novak of New Berlin and William (Jayne) Novak of Manilus; sister, Barbara Rivas of Norwich; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Friday, July 13, 2001, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Gilmartin Funeral Home Inc., 329-333 W. Main St. in Batavia.

Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial on Saturday, July 14, 2001, at St. Cecilia's R.C. Church on Maple Street in Oakfield at 1 p.m.

Calling hours will be held Monday, July 16, 2001, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.

Graveside service and burial will be held at the Fairview Cemetery on Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at 10:30 a.m.

Memorials may be made to the Camp Kiwanis or to St. Cecilia's R.C. Church, Maple Street, Oakfield, NY 14025.

Funeral arrangements are by the Gilmartin Funeral Home Inc., with local arrangements by the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.

Betty-Lou Daley

UNADILLA — Betty-Lou Daley, 48, of Unadilla, passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born March 4, 1953, in New York, the daughter of Constantino and Ray (Housmann) Boglioli.

She was married to William L. Daley Jr. on Dec. 4, 1976, in Sidney Center.

Betty-Lou has been a resident of Unadilla since 1969, and enjoyed gardening, baking, cooking, the outdoors and spending time with her grandson.

She is survived by her husband, William Daley of Unadilla; her sons and daughters-in-law, Gerard and Jacquelynn Boglioli of New Berlin, Shawn and Nicole Daley of West Townsend, Mass., and William Daley of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; a sister, Irma Cortese of Dallas; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Louis and Teresa Boglioli of Cape Town, South Africa, and Conrad and Carol Boglioli of Maryland; a grandson, Tyler Daley; and several nieces and nephews.

She was a past member of the Wells Bridge Fireman's Auxiliary and Women's Bowling Travel League and attended the former Wells Bridge United Methodist Church.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home in Unadilla on Friday, July 13, 2001, from 5 to 7 p.m., followed by funeral and committal services at 7 p.m.

Burial will be in Unadilla Center Cemetery in Unadilla.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home in Unadilla.

HARTWICK — A memorial service for Ford B. Risley will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2001, at the Hartwick United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Roger G. Yoder officiating.

All are welcome to join Ford's family and friends.

John P. Olson

DELHI — A memorial service for John P. Olson will be held Friday, July 13, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church on Clinton Street in Delhi.

A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.

Mildred Southworth

SPRINGFIELD CENTER — A memorial service to celebrate the life of Mildred Clark Southworth will be held Sunday, July 15, 2001, at 4 p.m. at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Springfield Center.

Helen Brigham

COOPERSTOWN — Helen Marjorie Brigham, 82, of Toddsville, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at her home.

She was born in Edmeston on Dec. 24, 1918, a daughter of William and Edith (Johnson) Walrath.

Helen grew up in the Edmeston and Burlington Flats area, attending schools there.

She married Lester A. Brigham on May 12, 1937. He predeceased her in November 1970.

She worked at Bassett Healthcare for eight years as a nurse's aide and then worked for Barbara Norton at the Edgewater Estate for 20 years.

Helen enjoyed crocheting, embroidery, and showed her love for her dog, as well as her love for her family.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Jane and Bernard Fahey of Jordanville and Judy and Dick Barley of Earlville; two sons, Lester Brigham of Toddsville and Warren Brigham and his wife, Sandra, of Cooperstown; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Shirley Walrath of Cooperstown, Billy and Marion Walrath of Maryland and Earl and Barbara Walrath of Hartwick Seminary.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Lester and Bob Walrath; two sisters, Kathryn Richards and Mary House; two children, Helen Gage and Richard Brigham; and one grandchild, Jason Fahey.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 14, 2001, at noon at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Jack Klosheim, pastor of the Community Bible Chapel in Toddsville, officiating. Calling hours will be on Saturday, July 14, 2001, from 11 a.m. to noon, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will follow the funeral service in the Hartwick Cemetery in Hartwick.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service of Cooperstown and Milford.

Everett Palmeter

ONEONTA — Everett E. Palmeter, 77, of Oneonta, passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in  Johnson City.

He was born on Sept. 4, 1923, in Binghamton, the son of the late Theodore E. and Bessie E. Totton Palmeter.

He was predeceased by a sister, Edith; a brother, Burton; and a daughter-in-law, Karen.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Arlene Stafford Palmeter of Oneonta; four sons, Mark and his wife, Kathy, of Schenevus, Bruce and his wife, Becky, of Oneonta, Randall of Oneonta and Rex of Oneonta; two daughters, Sharon "Bunny" Hudson and her husband, Bill, of Las Vegas and Rachel Palmeter of Wells Bridge; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces, and nephews.

Mr. Palmeter was a longtime resident of Oneonta, employed with the State University College at Oneonta, in their food service department, for over 20 years. He was also an employee with Greenthumb, assisting in their office.

He was a proud U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland. He received the World War II Victory Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal.

He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Sunday, July 15, 2001, at the Bookhout Funeral Home — 357
Main St. in Oneonta — with the Rev. William Bouton of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Committal services with military honors will follow in Ouleout Valley Cemetery in Franklin. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home on Saturday, July 14, 2001.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Chestnut Street, Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of Everett E. Palmeter.
