James M. Bartz

FERN PARK, Fla. — James M. Bartz, 77, died of congestive heart failure on Friday, July 6, 2001, at his home in Fern Park, Fla.

He was born on April 21, 1924, in Sidney Center, N.Y., the son of Jacob and Marjorie (Brown) Bartz.

A 1942 graduate of Sidney High School, he served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1943 to 1946 as a weather observer.

On June 26, 1948, Jim was united in marriage to Maxine Cronauer, daughter of Ellis and Dorothea (Brinkman) Cronauer, at the Sidney Center Methodist Church.

Jim received a bachelor's of arts degree from Hartwick College in 1961, a master's degree in education from the State University College at Oneonta in 1970, and studied at the Westminster Theological Seminary.

As an ordained Methodist clergyman, the Rev. Bartz served churches in Mount Upton-Rockdale, Afton-North Afton, Schenevus-Westford, and Bainbridge-Union Valley. Pastor Jim was a leader in the Christian Friendship Caravan, taking groups of young people to Western Europe in 1955, 1958 and 1965.

Between 1967 and 1980, Jim was a guidance counselor at the Mount Upton and Afton Central Schools, and taught classes at Greene Central School and SUNY Morrisville.

Throughout his life, Jim was interested in emergency medical care. He joined the Afton Fire Department, served with the Bainbridge Emergency Squad, and was instrumental in forming the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, of which he was a lifetime member.

In 1980, Jim and Maxine moved to Orlando, Fla., where he was employed in the Human Resources Department at the Orlando Regional Medical Center. After assisting in the development of ORMC's Pastoral Care Department, the Rev. Bartz served as a staff chaplain and education coordinator, creating a cancer residency program for Orlando area clergy. Retiring in 1989, he continued with ORMC as a part-time chaplain until 1999.

Jim's daughter, Cynthia Jean Maisey of Oneida, N.Y., predeceased him in 1999.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine, Fern Park; his daughters and sons-in law, Judith Ann (Edwyn) Simon, Fern Park, Alane Claire (Phillip) Strong, Worcester, N.Y., Carol Ellen (Richard) Jordan, Unadilla, N.Y., Susan Keigh (Mark) Williams, Orlando, and Jonathan Maisey, Oneida, N.Y.; his grandchildren, Karen (Victor) Accurso, Bradenton, Jennifer Curtis, Bainbridge, N.Y., James Benson, West Palm Beach, Brenda (Shane) Winchester, Unadilla, N.Y.,; Heather Maisey, Worcester, Mass., and Elaine Maisey, Oneida, N.Y.; his great-grandchildren, Marc and Darren Accurso and Haley Winchester; his brothers, Harold, Newark Valley, N.Y., and Ernest, Sidney Center, N.Y.; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family will be in attendance at the C.H. Landers Chapel, Sidney, Friday, July 27, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. for calling hours. A memorial service will be held Saturday at the Bainbridge Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Interment will be at the Ouleout Cemetery in Franklin.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations for the Orlando Regional Healthcare Foundation, Account #7040, 1414 Kuhl Ave., Orlando, Fla. 32806.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

John B. Campbell

SCHUYLER LAKE — Mr. John B. Campbell, 72, passed away Friday, July 20, 2001, at his residence after a short illness.

He was born April 21, 1929, in 5 Railway Buildings, District of Thornton, County of Fife, Scotland, the son of Alexander and Jeannie (Monroe) Campbell.

On March 5, 1957, he married Elizabeth Logan in St. Ninians Church, Dunfermline, Scotland. She survives.

Mr. Campbell served in the Royal Air Force in England for seven years.

He was a United States resident for 36 years in Schuyler Lake.

He was a certified child care worker for more than 30 years, and spent 18 years working at St. Colmans Home in Watervliet.

He was a member of the Delhi Masonic Lodge #439.

Survivors besides his wife of 44 years, Elizabeth Campbell of Schuyler Lake, are three sisters, Sheena Palmer and Helen Bean of Scotland, and Alexandra Euden of England; one brother, Brian Campbell of Africa.

Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley. There will be no public services.

Contributions in Mr. Campbell's memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or the Louis Busch Hager Cancer Center at Bassett Hospital.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Lila E. Southern

ONEONTA — Lila E. "Kay" Southern, 77, of Oneonta, died Sunday morning, July 22, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Emergency Room, Oneonta.

She was born April 30, 1924, in Laurens, the daughter of Clayton and Ella (Colegrove) Harrington.

She married Carlton J. Southern on June 25, 1950, in Great Bend, Pa., who survives her.

Kay was a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker.

She grew up in Laurens and later moved to Oneonta where she has spent most of her life.

Kay had a green thumb and enjoyed caring for her flowers and plants. As a pastime, she enjoyed writing poetry.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Carlton J. Southern of Oneonta; one stepson and his wife, Brian and Eileen Southern of Binghamton; two sons and their wives, David and Mary Southern of Otego and Robert and Mary Southern of Oneonta; a brother and sister-in-law, Nelson and Marion Harrington of Otego; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Agnes Sullivan of Cooperstown and Virginia and Gerald Place of Laurens; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. The Rev. Fred Albrecht, pastor of the Otego United Methodist Church, will officiate.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the American Lung Association of Mid New York Inc., 587 Main St., New York Mills, N.Y. 13417 in memory of Lila E. "Kay" Southern.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Mae Hitt Sandin

BLOOMVILLE — Mae Hitt Sandin, 63, of Bloomville, succumbed after a lengthy illness Friday, July 20, 2001.

She was born May 25, 1938, the daughter of Fred E. and Susan (Smith) Hitt in Bloomville.

Mae was employed by the Delaware County Office of Employment and Training from 1988 to present. Prior to this she was employed as a nurse's aide at the Delaware County Infirmary.

She graduated in 1956 from South Kortright Central School.

Her husband, Ken, of Crowe Road, Bloomville; his five children, Christine, Scott, Linda, Jeff, Laura and their spouses and children, survive Mrs. Sandin. She is also survived by her only son, Ricky G. Martin and wife, Susan of Austin,  Texas; and her "special daughter," Lisa (Goodspeed) Sandin. She is also survived by sisters, Dorothy (Dot) Johnson, Anna Martin, Margaret (Peg) Smith, all of Bloomville; brothers, Richard (Dick) Hitt, Bloomville, Samuel (Sam) of Largo, Fla., John of Norfolk, Va., Melvin of Long Beach, Long Island, and their spouses; and several nieces and nephews.

Two brothers, Fred and James (Jim) Hitt, predeceased her.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Bloomville, with Fr. Paul Hartt officiating. Calling hours will be at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, on Monday evening, July 23, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville, following the service.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Louis Busch Hager Cancer Center, 1 Atwell Rd., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Joseph M. Ross Jr.

JENSEN BEACH, Fla. — Joseph M. Ross Jr., 75, of Jensen Beach, Fla., formerly of Bradford, Pa., passed away Monday, July 16, 2001, in the Martin Memorial Hospital, Stuart, Fla.

Born Oct. 30, 1925, in Lewis Run, Pa., Mr. Ross was a son of the late Joseph Ross and Fannie Piscitelli Ross who survives.

He was the husband of Shirley Hampson.

Mr. Ross graduated from Bradford High School and Pierce College of Business in Philadelphia in 1948.

He served in World War II with the 8th Air Force and was assigned to the 427th Squadron of the 303rd Bomb Group. He flew 36 missions and was credited with shooting down a ME-262 German Fighter for which he received an air medal.

He was a public accountant in the Bradford area for many years. He then went to work for Holiday Inns of America as a comptroller and traveled the eastern United States until he settled in south Florida. At that point in time he became comptroller of Schrieber Development Corp. in Hillsboro Beach. While there his business career expanded to include business administrator for Graham, Hedge and Swan Law Firm to vice-president for Gramco Development Corp. He later formed Ross Consulting Services of which he was president until his death.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a past president of the Elks Lodge in Bradford.

Guiseppe, as he was known to his beloved friends, was an avid golfer who won many tournaments over the years, including one at Pine Acres and the Penn Hills Club.

During the course of Mr. Ross's career he was also a very accomplished musician who owned an accordion studio in Bradford and taught the instrument to many young students.

In addition to his wife and his mother, of Lewis Run, Mr. Ross is survived by a brother, Frank Ross, Lewis Run; two sons, Stephen X. Ross, Ft. Lauderdale, and David J. Ross, Oneonta, N.Y.; a daughter, Pamela A. Gascon, Unadilla, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; two stepchildren, Lori M. Hemings, Palm City, and Terry Hemings, North Miami Beach; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Friends are invited to call Wednesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes Inc., East Main Street, Lewis Run, Pa. A prayer service will be held Thursday, July 26, 2001, in the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church, Lewis Run, with the Rev. Leo Gallina, pastor of St. Bernard Church, officiating. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery.

Memorials if desired may be made to Molly's House, 430 SE Osceola St., Stuart, Fla. 34994.

Wayne A. Utter

VALRICO, Fla. — Wayne A. "Gramps" Utter, 78, of Valrico, Fla., passed away Thursday, July 19, 2001.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor of Valrico; son, Wayne Utter Jr. of Apex, N.C.; daughter, Sue Lynn Wilson of Guilford, N.Y.; four sisters, Kathleen Maggio of Valrico, Barbara Doremus of Brandon, Betty Beardslee of Goshen, Ala., and Carol Ackley of Oneonta, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.

He was a native of Oneonta, moving to the area in 1996, coming from Sherburne, N.Y.

He was a manufacturing supervisor with Kenyon Press in Sherburne, a Baptist and a member of the Strawberry Ridge Veterans Club, past president of Otego Volunteer Fire Department of Otego, N.Y., a previous member of Strawberry Ridge Neighbor Watch program, a sergeant in the United States Army and World War II veteran.

Services will be conducted on Tuesday, July 24, 2001, 7 p.m. at the Stowers Brandon Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Mary R. Eckler

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Mary R. Eckler, 97, formerly of Cooperstown, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at the Eastern Star Home in Oriskany.

She was born in Unadilla on July 15, 1904, a daughter of Lester and Clara (Green) Rogers.

After graduating from Unadilla High School she went on to graduate from Oneonta Normal School as a teacher.

She married Harry O. Eckler on Sept. 7, 1926, in Newark Valley.

Mary resided in Cooperstown for 31 years before moving to Whigs Corners for 17 years.

She was a member of the Otsego Chapter Order of the Eastern Star #201, since 1946, having served as matron in 1958. She was also a member of the United Methodist Church of Cooperstown and former president of the United Methodist Women as well as a Sunday School teacher for many years.

Mary enjoyed crocheting and taking long walks, but her passion was her family.

She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Joan Eckler of Fort Plain and Wayne Eckler of Burnt Hills; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth and George Zogby of Frankfort and Gerry and Fred Sousa of Oneonta; 12 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren; one niece and one nephew.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Lynn Snyder, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Cooperstown, officiating.

Calling hours will be on Tuesday, July 24, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown from 1 to 2 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will follow the funeral service at the Springfield Center Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Kenneth E. Bubko

EAST MEREDITH — Kenneth E. Bubko, 43, of East Meredith, passed away July 21, 2001, at his residence after a brief illness of lung cancer.

He was born Jan. 9, 1958, in Teaneck, N.J., son of Leonard and Margaret (Proksch) Bubko.

He was the devoted husband of Maria Prochilo, who he married on Aug. 2, 1992, in Wappingers Falls.

He served in the United States Army.

Mr. Bubko was a tractor-trailer driver for Freehold Cartage, where he made many friends.

He was a former resident of  Pennsylvania and New Jersey, until seven years ago when he and his wife moved to East Meredith.

He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Maria at home; five children, Christopher, Kevin, Kenneth of Paramus, N.J., and Anna and Louis of East Meredith; two sisters and a brother, Kim Petsch, Lynn Bauer, and Brad Bubko; and aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at the Main Street Baptist Church in Oneonta, with John Wessells officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta. Friends may call at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, from 7 to 9 p.m. today, July 23, and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, when the family will be in attendance.

Contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Louise Burdick

HOBART — Louise Burdick, 84, of Hobart, died June 23, 2001, at home after an extended illness.

Survivors include two granddaughters and their husbands, Roberta (Larry) Van Valkenburgh and Bobbi Jo (Larry) Johnson; as well as five great-grandsons. Her nephew, Gus F. Polli and his wife, Louise, also survive her.

Her husband, Pete Burdick, and her son, Robert Hitchcock predeceased Louise.

A graveside service will be held at the Stamford Cemetery, Stamford, on July 28, 2001, at 11 a.m.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Blenheim Hose Company, Blenheim, N.Y., or Catskill Area Hospice Inc., Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the William A. Tari Funeral Home, Stamford.

James H. Montanya

NORWICH — James H. Montanya Sr., 65, or Norwich, passed away on Sunday, July 22, 2001, at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.

He was born on Oct. 16, 1935, in Oakland, N.J., the son of the late Paul L. and Margaret W. Winter Montanya Sr.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Joyce A. Peraino Montanya in 1977; and a brother, Paul L. Montanya Jr. in 1980.

He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Elizabeth Burgher Montanya of Norwich; his children, James H. Montanya Jr. of Winston-Salem, N.C., Laurie Young and her husband, Lawrence of Bainbridge, Jamie Carkees of Fly Creek, Victoria Miller of Norwich, and Veronica Stacey and her husband, David of Norwich; his grandchildren, Lawrence Young, Christopher Young, Joyce Carkees, Jamie Carkees, Nicole Robinson, Jeffrey Robinson, Adam Robinson, David Stacey Jr., April Stacey and Angel Stacey; two nieces, Mary E. Montanya and Debra M. Ward, both of Hartwick; one nephew, Paul J. Montanya of Bloomville; one great-aunt, Jane Greene of New Jersey; and several cousins.

Mr. Montanya was a resident of the area for more than 23 years, coming from Oakland, N.J.

He was a United States Army veteran, and a mason's attendant before working with his brother, Paul in auto body service. From 1990 to 2000, he was employed with the Oneonta Country Club as a groundskeeper.

Memorial services will be 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until the time of services at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Norwich Emergency Medical, care of Fire Chief, 1 City Plaza, Norwich, N.Y. 13815 in loving memory of James.
