Eileen Pizzolongo

FRANKLIN — Eileen Pizzolongo, 85, of Franklin, passed away Friday, July 27, 2001, at the A.0. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born Sept. 30, 1915, in Northwich, England, the daughter of Richard and Caroline (Foster) Rowbottom. She married Joseph Pizzolongo on Sept. 8, 1943, in Northwich.

Eileen has been a resident of Franklin for the past 20 years moving to the area from Lodi, N.J.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph of Franklin; a son, Joseph Pizzolongo of Franklin; a son and daughter-in-law, Martin and Susan Pizzolongo of Rochelle Park, N.J.; a daughter and son-in-law, Theresa and Andrew Rieder of Hawthorn Woods, Ill.; two sisters, Teresa Cheetham and Maria Witenshaw of England; and one brother Tom Rowbottom of England; along with several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, John and Delbert Rowbottom and one sister, Wyn Woods.

A funeral service will be held Monday, July 30, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin with the Rev. Mr. Michael Donnell, Deacon, officiating.

Friends may call at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home in Franklin on Sunday afternoon from 2 to 5, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home of Franklin.

Margo Mason

SIDNEY — Margo Mason, 70, of Sidney, passed away at The Meadows Nursing Facility on Friday, July 27, 2001.

She was born April 30, 1931, in Watertown.

Margo was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sidney and very active in the ARC program.

She is survived by Sharon Kent-Cole and Donald Cole of Sidney; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Eunice Mason of Carson City, Nev.; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 31, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St. in Sidney, at 8 p.m. Visitation will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Burial will be on Wednesday in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney at 10 a.m.

Memorial contributions can be made to Catskill Area Hospice 542 Main St. in Oneonta.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Inc. of Sidney

Margaret E. Steere

HARTWICK — Mrs. Margaret E. ("Sis") Steere, 76, of Hartwick, died Friday afternoon, July 27, 2001, at The Meadows.

She was born on July 27, 1925, in Rahway, N.J., a daughter of Charles William ("Bill") and Margaret Lucy (Gibbs) Schweitzer.

She married Nelson E. Steere on June 22, 1946, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Rahway, N.J. Mr. Steere died on Sept. 23, 1998.

Raised and educated in Rahway, N.J., Sis worked for a time in a plant during World War II.

In 1969, she and her family moved to Hartwick from Canajoharie.

For 20 years she was employed by the A.R.C. in Hartwick as a bus monitor, retiring in April of 1999.

At one time she was active in Girl Scouts and with the Home Bureau.

Sis is survived by her four daughters, Linda Winsman of Fultonville, Shirley Steere of Tucson, Ariz., Lorraine (Lori) Butler and her husband, David, of Hartwick, and Jacqueline (Jackie) and Michael Earle of Bradenton, Fla.; six grandchildren; four great-granddaughters; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Fran and Dee Schweitzer of Babylon, and Herb and Rose Schweitzer of Stone Harbor, N.J.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by one sister, Elizabeth Bunt; three brothers, William, Donald and Thomas Arthur (Art) Schweitzer; and one son-in-law, Richard C. Winsman.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at the Hartwick Christian Church, with the Rev. Laverne H. Saxer, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Hartwick Center Union Cemetery on the Hinman Hollow Road.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or Hartwick Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 208, Hartwick, N.Y. 13348.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Shirley Hollenbeck

GILBERTSVILLE — Shirley Hollenbeck, 51, of Gilbertsville, died Friday, July 27, 2001, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born Dec. 26, 1949, in Oneonta, the daughter of William and Wanda Cane.

She was a graduate of Morris Central School and the Otsego Area School of Practical Nursing.

The loving and kind organization and staff of the Catskill Area Hospice had employed her until her death. They have always given faithful support to her during times of sickness and the family appreciates this loving kindness.

Shirley was a born-again and faithful Christian to the Lord's service and a member of the West End Community Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Hollenbeck, of Gilbertsville; her daughters, Laura Weill and Victoria Ouimet; a son, Robert Hollenbeck Jr., all of Oneonta; three grandchildren, April Weill, Jennifer Hollenbeck and Hannah Ouimet. Her mother, Wanda Predmore of North Norwich; a brother, William Cane of Oneonta; and a sister, Barbara Cane of North Norwich also survive her.

Our heart-felt thanks goes out to each one who has, and will continue to support, our family.

Visitation was held Sunday evening and funeral services will be Monday, July 30, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the West End Community Baptist Church, 128 Winney Hill Road, Oneonta, with the Rev. Keith Vandewerker officiating. A fellowship gathering will be held after the funeral service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in Shirley's memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Ronald Eldred

COOPERSTOWN — Ronald LeRoy Eldred, 67, of Cooperstown, died late Friday evening, July 27, 2001, at his home.

Ron was born in Cooperstown, on Oct. 25, 1933, to Dorr E. and Sara Belle (Clinton) Eldred.

He married Betty Bird on Dec. 31, 1953, in Cooperstown.

He grew up in this area and attended Richfield Springs Central School.

Ron served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict as a member of the 187th Airborne Division.

Ron was employed as a painter for the Leatherstocking Corp. for 15 years and for the past 27 years was a self-employed general contractor.

A founding member of the Fiddlesticks Riding Club, for many years Ron enjoyed riding and doing blacksmith work. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and, as a member of his son's pit crew, he especially enjoyed stock car racing.

Ron is survived by his wife of 47 years, Betty; his son and daughter-in-law, Stephen J. and Bonnie Eldred of Cooperstown; three grandchildren, Angela Eldred and Chad Eldred of Cooperstown and Marcy Eldred of West Sand Lake; one great-granddaughter, McKenna George of West Sand Lake; one sister, Mrs. Hazel Chance of Port Charlotte, Fla.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Shirley and Frank Vila of Anthony, Fla., Barbara and Earl Walrath of Hartwick Seminary, Nancy and Glen Hurry of Citra, Fla., Lois and Neil Deuel of Fruitland Park, Fla., and Robert Turner of Fly Creek; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by one son, Robert ("Bobby") James Eldred, who died May 14, 2001; and one sister, Mrs. Myrtle J. Turner, who died Oct. 6, 1987.

A military honors service will be held at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Cooperstown Veterans' Club according honors.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or the American Cancer Society, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905-4797.

Robert J. Hosford

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Robert J. (Iggy) Hosford, 88, of Richfield Springs, passed away July 24, 2001, at the home of his daughter in DeLand, Fla.

He was born May 28, 1913, in Richfield Springs, the son of Clinton L. and Bertha Van Valkenburg Hosford.

He graduated from Richfield Springs High School in 1931. Following graduation, he served in the United States Army for three years including more than a year in Italy.

His wife, Frances Gidley Murphy, who he married in May 1947, predeceased him in July of 1978. His brother, Gordon (Toddy) Hosford, also predeceased him.

Mr. Hosford owned and managed Harris Gun Stocks, known all over the country, for more than 35 years, manufacturing gun stocks for rifles, shotguns and pistols. He also owned and operated Richfield Springs Sports Center, selling sporting goods.

A member of many clubs and organizations, Mr. Hosford was a 50-year mason of the Richfield Masonic Lodge and served one term on the Richfield Springs Village Board. He belonged to the VFW Post 6659 for 55 years, serving as quartermaster for 50 years. At one time, he served as secretary-treasurer of Richfield Springs Veterans Club, as well as treasurer of the Richfield Sportsman Club for more than 15 years, the Chamber of Commerce for more than 25 years and the Richfield Springs Fire Department for 42 years during his 60 years of service.

He is survived by two daughters, Patricia Burkholder of DeLand, Fla., and Roberta Fernalld and husband, William, of Richfield Springs; a son, Michael Hosford and wife, Anna, of Richfield Springs; six grandchildren, two great-grandchil-dren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at 10 a.m. at the Church of Christ Uniting on Church Street, Richfield Springs, followed by a service at 11 a.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Richfield Springs Fire Department.

William Richards

COOPERSTOWN — William ("Will") George Richards, 79, of Delaware Street in Cooperstown, died Saturday afternoon, July 28, 2001, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica.

Will was born on Sept. 27, 1921, at home on Walnut Street in Cooperstown, a son of Claude Pickens and Anna (Hull) Richards.

He married Wanda Olmstead on March 28, 1942, in Baltimore, Md.

Raised in Cooperstown, Will graduated from Cooperstown High School with the Class of 1941. He then attended Defense School in Richfield Springs and became employed by Martin Aircraft in Baltimore, Md., as a tool and die maker.

A World War II United States Army veteran, he served in the Philippines with the Army Corps of Engineers and attained the rank of T5. Upon his honorable discharge, he became employed as a plumber for McEwan's Hardware in Cooperstown. He later became a meter reader for NYSEG, retiring in 1983.

Of the Episcopal faith, Will was a member of Christ Church in Cooperstown, where he was a loyal attendee and at one time served on the Vestry. He was also a member of New York State Historical Association, the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown and the Train Collectors' Association.

Will is survived by his wife of 59 years, Wanda, of Cooperstown; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lynn and David  Jones of Boca Raton, Fla., and Elisabeth ("Beth") and Robert Jerson of Utica; three grandsons, Dr. Matthew William Richards  Jones and his wife, Cora, Jeremy Louis Clark  Jones and his wife, Katherine, and Michael Robert Richards Jerson; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. He is also survived by his beloved Pembroke Welsh Corgis, Oona and Paige.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at Christ Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas C. Smith, rector, officiating. Committal services and entombment will follow at the Columbarium Wall in the Church-yard at Christ Church.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made in Will's memory to a scholarship fund to be established for a graduating art student at Cooperstown Central School, Linden Avenue, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Gertrude E. Hoy

DOWNSVILLE — Gertrude E. Hoy, 98, of Downsville, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at the Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

She was born April 11, 1903, in Downsville, the daughter of Wilson P. Hoy and Elizabeth Bennett.

She was never married.

She was a telephone operator for a local telephone company.

She was a lifelong Downsville resident.

She was the last charter member of James S. Moore Unit #167 of the American Legion Auxiliary, Downsville, a member of the Eastern Star, Downsville and the Colchester Community Church, Downsville.

She is survived by two nieces, Patricia Hoy McRae of Conesus and Salenda Hoy of Saugerties; one nephew, David Hoy, Port Richey, Fla.; and several great-nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Page Cemetery, Downsville. Burial will be at Page Cemetery, Downsville.

Following the graveside service, family and friends are invited to Gertrude's home on Maple Avenue, Downsville.

Contributions may be made in memory of Gertrude to Countryside Care Center Memorial Fund, Delhi.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Walnut Street, Margaretville.

Ernest D. Bloomer

HERMON, Maine — Ernest Dales "Ernie" Bloomer, 62, of Hermon, Maine, died unexpectedly July 17, 2001, at Dover-Foxcroft Hospital, Maine.

He was born in Cooperstown on Jan. 13, 1939, the son of John Emory and Wilma (Curry) Bloomer.

Ernie was a graduate of Cooperstown Central School, Delhi Tech, attended the University of New Mexico and was a graduate of Beal College, Bangor.

At the time of his death, he was employed as a civil engineer with the Barrett Paving Co. of Dover-Foxcroft.

He was a member of Otsego Lodge No. 138 AF & AM of Cooperstown, Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Bangor, Maine Consistory 32nd Degree, Anah Shriner's and the Provost Guard, where he had served as secretary/treasurer.

Surviving are his wife, Lois (Titus) Bloomer of Hermon; one son, Kirk D. Bloomer and his wife, Lisa M. of Ellsworth, Maine; a daughter, Kim B. Gray and her husband, Mark E. of Brewer, Maine; two grandchildren, Ashley and Alexander Bloomer, both of Ellsworth; his mother, Wilma (Curry) Bloomer of Hyde Park, N.Y.; three brothers, John, Malcolm and Kenneth; four sisters, Lillian, Elaine Genevra and Velma; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends called from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, Maine, where relatives and friends were invited to a Masonic memorial service at 7:30 p.m., conducted by the officers and members of St. Andrew's Lodge No. 83 AF & AM of Bangor. Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Robert T. Carlson, pastor of the East Orrington Congregational Church, officiating.

Gifts in his memory may be made to the Shrine Burns Hospital, care of Anah Shriner's, P.O. Box 735, Bangor, Maine 04402-0735.

Marjorie Ann Foote

SHERBURNE — Marjorie Ann Foote, 51, of Sherburne, formerly of Otego, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich.

She was born Aug. 15, 1949, in Oneonta, the daughter of Donald A. and Ruth H. (Hymers) Foote.

She is survived by her parents, Donald A. and Ruth H. Foote of Otego; one brother, Don Foote of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two aunts, Dorothy Root of Sidney and Claudine Smith of  Pennsylvania. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family. The Rev. Craig Merritt, pastor of the Otego Baptist Church in Otego, will officiate.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Otego Baptist Church, Main Street, Otego, NY 13825 in memory of Marjorie Ann Foote.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes of Oneonta and Otego.

Dorothy Hummell

MECHANICVILLE — Dorothy E. Hummell, 91, formerly of Stamford, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, in Mechanicville, at Cooks Adult Home, where she lived for the last six years.

She was born Dec. 20, 1909, in Shandaken, the daughter of William and Bessie (Rosa) Coons.

She married the late Richard R. Hummell on Oct. 9, 1937, in Allaben. He predeceased her Oct. 26, 1995.

A son, William, and his wife, Jean, of Ballston Spa; and three grandchildren, Kristi Hummell, Jason Hummell and Amy Hummell, Ballston Spa, survive her.

Mrs. Hummell lived in the Stamford area for many years and enjoyed membership in the Stamford Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school.

She had a strong passion for quilting and was known to quilt lovingly for family and friends.

A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family, with Pastor Elliott Oakes officiating. Burial will be at the Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Saratoga County Hospice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home in Hobart.

Faith E. Kesel

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — Ms. Faith E. Kesel, 78, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., formerly of this area, died Friday, July 27, 2001, at home.

She was born in Morris on Sept. 21, 1922.

She was a first lieutenant in the United States Army, serving in India during World War II.

She was a graduate of Syracuse University and Boston College.

She moved to Florida in 1955 from Oneonta.

She had been a night supervisor at A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta.

She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the Coronado Shuffleboard Club and the Little Theater, New Smyrna Beach, Fla.

She is survived by her son, Michael Kesel of Topeka, Kan.; a brother, Paul Edgerton Jr., of Spencertown, N.Y.; a sister, Mary Wojcikowski of High Point, N.C.; and two grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia County, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, Fla. 32119.

Elizabeth Coleman

COOPERSTOWN — Committal services for Elizabeth A. Coleman, who died April 29, 2001, will be held on Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at 10 a.m. at the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery in Hartwick Seminary, with the Rev. John C. Young, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
