Clement Roberts

UNADILLA — Clement Berkley Roberts Jr., 43, of Unadilla, passed away Tuesday, July 31, 2001, after a long battle with Sickle Cell disease at Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton.

He was born Dec. 22, 1957, in Brooklyn, the son of Clement Berkley Roberts Sr. and Neomia (Lemon) Smith.

Clement has lived in the greater Oneonta area since 1975, and most recently in Unadilla.

He was a counselor for New York state at Camp Brace, Masonville, for the past 17 years.

He was a 1979 graduate of State University College at Oneonta.

Clement enjoyed raising Doberman dogs as a pastime.

He is survived by his father, Clement Berkley Roberts Sr. of Brooklyn; and his mother, Neomia Lemon Smith of Sidney; his stepmother, Sheila Roberts of Brooklyn; one brother, Christopher Smith of Oneonta; one sister and brother-in-law, Olretha and Ray Fleming of Oneonta; his aunts and uncles, Lilly Lemon of Oneonta, Alice and George Dickey of  South Carolina, Daisy and Rudolph Stevens of  South Carolina, Mattie Lemon of Brooklyn, Ray and Laverne Lemon of  South Carolina, Raymond and Emma Lemon of  South Carolina, Matthew Boyd of  South Carolina and Arthur Boxill of the West Indies. Also survived by three nieces; two nephews and several cousins.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. David Seaver, Lourdes Hospital chaplain, officiating. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at the funeral home before the funeral service, when the family will be present.

Clement will be cremated following services at the Hillington Crematory, Morris, with burial of his ashes in  South Carolina at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Georgia Sickle Cell Foundation, 2391 Benjamin E. Mays Drive S.W., Atlanta, GA 30311 in memory of Clement Berkley Roberts Jr.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

William W. Sanford

MARGARETVILLE — William W. (Bill) Sanford, 44, of Margaretville, died July 29, 2001, at his residence.

He was born June 27, 1957, in Margaretville, the son of Winton H. and Marjorie (Williams) Sanford.

He was single.

He was employed at Belleayre Mountain Ski Center, where he worked in the ski shop. For several years he was a self-employed painter and had also worked at Kiddie Lites, Roxbury.

He graduated from Margaretville Central School in 1976. Bill graduated from Herkimer and Cortland colleges majoring in physical education.

He was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing. He was always interested in the youth of the community following them in many youth activities.

He is survived by one brother, Thomas Sanford of Southington, Conn.; three sisters, Anne Sanford of Plattsburgh, Joan Miller of Kingston and Carol Sanford of Deadwood, S.D.; nephew, Kevin Conrad, and children, Alissa and Ryan; nephew, Patrick, and wife, Heide Sanford of Palm Coast, Fla.; and by aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh officiating. Burial will be in the Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home.

Contributions in memory of Bill Sanford may be made to the Margaretville Fire Department or to the Ambulance Fund of Margaretville Memorial Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Charles McWherter

FRANKLIN — Charles I. McWherter, 64, of Franklin, died July 31, 2001, at his residence after a lengthy illness.

He was born April 7, 1937, in the town of Franklin, the son of Millard and Lillian (Mudge) McWherter.

He married Betty Beers on July 10, 1955, in Sidney Center.

Mr. McWherter had previously been a research engineer for Bendix Corp., in Sidney, and more recently was a self-employed carpenter.

He was a lifelong area resident and was a graduate of the Kellogg Central School in Treadwell and Broome County Community College in Binghamton.

He is survived by his wife at home; three daughters and their husbands, Cindy and David Smith of Norwich, Karen and Bill Hamalainen of Franklin and Nancy and Mike Carroll of North Franklin; four grandchildren, Matthew Safford, Heather and Kristina Hamalainen and Michael Carroll Jr.; two brothers, Paul and David McWherter; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Pamela; and a grandson, Jerimiah Safford.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at the McWherter homestead on Carey Road, for anyone wishing to attend. The Rev. Lyle Linder will officiate.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will be later in the Sidney Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make contributions to the Treadwell-Franklin Emergency Squad, Franklin, NY 13775.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Ruth L. Pfeiffer

WALTON — Ruth L. Pfeiffer, 89, of Walton, died on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at the Roscoe Community Nursing Home.

Ruth was born July 6, 1912, in Jamaica, the daughter of Charles and Catherine Fitzgerald Taylor.

She married Charles Pfeiffer in 1940 in Jamaica. He predeceased her in 1967.

A longtime resident of Elmont, Long Island, Ruth has been in Walton for the past 14 years.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Anthony Contello of Walton and Ruth and James Halton of San Diego,  Calif.; three grandchildren, Janine Halton, Mary Contello and Anthony Contello; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Clark & Winter Funeral Home in Walton on Thursday when the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Burial will be in Cypress Hills Cemetery, Brooklyn, at the convenience of the family.

Johanne M. Prager

WESTFORD — Johanne M. Prager, 95, of Westford, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at The Meadows.

She was born April 30, 1906, in Bramsche, Germany, the daughter of Heinrich and Anna Busch.

She married August Prager in 1932. He predeceased her on Jan. 5, 1969.

Mrs. Prager moved to the United States in 1932. She has been a Westford resident since 1945.

Mrs. Prager was a member of the Schenevus United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a son, Henry and his wife, Millie Prager; two grandsons, Kurt and Augie Prager; and her great-granddaughter, Lea Prager.

There will be no calling hours.

A private graveside service will be held at the Elk Creek Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Prager to the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus, NY 12155 or to the Westford First Responders, P.O. Box 187, Westford, NY 13488.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Marion Cornelia

CHERRY VALLEY — Mrs. Marion  Johnson Cornelia, 76, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at her residence.

She was born in Jersey City, N.J., the daughter of Elmore Ellsworth and Madeline (Hauck) Johnson.

She was married to David B. Cornelia, which ended in divorce.

Mrs. Cornelia was a 1942 graduate of Somerville High School, and a 1946 graduate of New Jersey College for Women (now Douglass).

Marion taught school at Roxbury High School in Succasunna, N.J. (1946-1956), Cooperstown Central School, Cooperstown, (1958-78), Oppenheim Ephrata School for one semester in 1981, and Cherry Valley School, from which she retired (1982-1988).

Survivors include one son, David E. Cornelia, and his wife, Tina; three grandchildren, David J., Danielle and Desiree, all of Cherry Valley; one sister, Arlyne Dentz, and her husband, Franklin, of Somerville, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Cornelia was active in the Presbyterian Church, Cherry Valley, the Cherry Valley Historical Association and many dramatic productions in New Jersey and Cherry Valley.

She wrote for many years for the Courier-Standard-Enterprise, Fort Plain. She ran the "Old Timers Shop" in Cherry Valley for several years and worked for Central National Bank, Cherry Valley. She was an election inspector for 15 years.

She loved to travel and had been on numerous trips to Europe, Florida and Myrtle Beach, S.C.

She played bridge on Tuesdays and was active in a Bridge Club. She also loved antiques, knitting, crocheting and needlepoint.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Ron Fralick officiating.

Public calling will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Cornelia's memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Alden Street, Cherry Valley, N.Y., 13320; the Cherry Valley Historical Association, P.O. Box 115, Cherry Valley 13320, or the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Mary C. Utter

DELHI — Mary C. Utter, 63, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs,  Colo., with her family by her side.

She was born April 15, 1938, the daughter of James and Isabel (Peck) Cahill in Stamford.

Mary graduated from Stamford Central School, where she was an All-State French horn player. Mary received a bachelor's degree in music from Hartwick College in 1960.

She taught music at  Jefferson Central, Delaware Academy and Treadwell Central School, and played the French horn with the Oneonta Symphony Orchestra.

In 1971, Mary received a master's degree in counseling from the State University College at Oneonta. She was a career counselor at SUCO for 24 years.

Mary was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Delhi, lovingly donating her musical talents as organist for 34 years. She was an honorary member of the Delhi Fire Department and served as captain of the Delhi Volunteer Emergency Squad. Mary was a certified emergency medical technician, instructor and proctor.

Mary enjoyed skiing, playing golf and quilting. She was a loving mother and grandmother.

Her husband, Robert G. Utter, to whom she was married for 42 years, marrying on Aug. 1, 1959, survives her. Her brother and his wife, James and Mary Cahill of Middleburgh; her son and his wife, Robert Utter and Dana Capozzella of Colorado Springs,  Colo.; her daughter and her partner, Christine Utter and Emily Warren of Colorado Springs,  Colo.; her three grandchildren, Nathaniel, Alexander and Lauren, born to Rob and Dana; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

There will be calling hours Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, from 4 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Rosary at 7 p.m. at MacArthur Funeral Home, 131 Main St., Delhi. A Funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Delhi, with the Rev. Edward J. Ryan celebrant. Burial will be in Stamford.

Gifts in her memory may be made to St. Peter's Catholic Church, the American Lung Association, Delhi Fire Department and Emergency Squad, Delaware County Cancer Association or Delaware County American Red Cross.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Michael Monser

OTEGO — Michael Shane Monser, 58, of Otego, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born May 10, 1943, in Seattle, Wash., the son of Thomas F. and Marguerite (Davis) Monser.

He married Gretchen Erhardt on Aug. 18, 1990, in Otego.

He served in the United States Air Force from 1961 to 1969, and was discharged as a staff sergeant.

Michael was the proprietor of Second Time Around Antiques in Unadilla, and before that he was affiliated with Oneonta Tire and Auto.

He was a member of BPOE 1312, the Oneonta American Legion, and the American Association of Antique Dealers.

He is survived by his wife, Gretchen E. Monser of Otego; his children, Mary Margaret Bruni and her husband, Nicholas, of Ambler, Pa., William F. Monser of Lansford, Pa., Melissa Monser of Ambler, Pa., Susan Monser of Jim Thorpe, Pa., Katherine Monser of Ambler, Pa., and Thomas F. Monser II of Ambler, Pa.; and 12 grandchildren. He is also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins and many special friends.

There will be no calling hours.

A gathering to celebrate the life of Michael Shane Monser will be held on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at 10 a.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta.

Memorial contributions may be directed to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Richard K. Staff

MISSISSIPPI — Richard K. Staff, 63, formerly of Conklin, N.Y., passed away March 31, 2001.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne Staff, Cathy and James Gardner and Ellen and Virgil Piercy; one son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Cindy Staff; sisters and brothers-in-law, Caroline and Larry Furman, Marlene Staff, Mary and Donald Lambert and Linda and James Homkey; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Walter and Marion Staff and Willard and Sharon Staff; stepchildren, Tracy Morris, Tonya, Tammy, Lance, Loren, Larry and Rick DeGroat; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Elizabeth Staff; a sister, Virginia Short; and one brother, Thomas Staff.

Graveside services will be Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at 10 a.m. at Forest Homes Cemetery, Taylor, Pa., with the Rev. Alan Swain officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Little  White Church, Conklin, N.Y.

Walter F. Judd Sr. NOR
Health Care Center in Syracuse.

He was born Aug. 9, 1926, in Oneonta and had lived in North Syracuse since 1958.

Walter was a senior field engineer for Power Generation Services of General Electric Co. in Syracuse for 34 years, retiring in 1986.

He was a third- and fourth-degree member of the Bishop Curley Council 3717 Knights of Columbus and the Assembly Color Corps of North Syracuse.

Walter was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (B.P.O.E.) Lodge No. 31 of Syracuse, a member of the South Shore Rod and Gun Club, a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church in North Syracuse and a charter member of the funeral reception committee of St. Rose.

He served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a Navy Seabee veteran and a member of American Legion Post 259 in Oneonta.

Walter is survived by his wife of 47 years, Beatrice H. "Bea" Shubert Judd; a daughter Cynthia Burns of Brewerton; three sons Walter F. Jr. of Annapolis, Md., Ronald J. of Westborough, Mass., and Robert L. of Mattydale; three sisters, M. Patricia Ladstatter of Baldswinville, Margaret Downing of Tallahassee, Fla., and Barbara Catlin of Albany; two brothers, Joseph H. of Oneonta, and William R. of Huddleston, Va.; 11 grandsons, including WZOZ on-air person Sean Burns; and three granddaughters.

The funeral will be at 9:30 am. Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at the Fergerson Funeral Home, 215 South Main St. in North Syracuse, followed by a church service at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church.

Entombment will be in St. Mary's Resurrection Chapel Mausoleum in Dewitt.

Calling hours are from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001 at the funeral home.

Contributions can be given to the St. Rose of Lima Church Food Pantry, 409 South Main St., North Syracuse, NY 13212.

Lois S. Haney

BELMAR, N.J. — Lois Salisbury Haney, 82, of Belmar, N.J., died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at her residence.

Born in Hinman Hollow in the town of Hartwick, she was an elementary school teacher. Her first position was in a one-room rural school in The Clove, near Cobleskill. She substituted for 15 years while her children were young. She also taught in East Meadow, Hightstown, Pennsauken, Tinton Falls and Salem, N.J. Mrs. Haney was a master teacher, serving in positions of head teacher, unit leader and student teacher mentor. She was a graduate of Oneonta Normal School and later earned a degree from Glassboro State College.

She was active in children's, youth, women's and music organizations in the churches of which she was a member. She was most recently a member of the First United Methodist Church of Belmar, N.J.

She was predeceased by her parents, Edgar and Ida Salisbury; and two brothers and a sister, Robert and Clyde Salisbury and Gladys Pidgeon.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, the Rev. Sanford M. Haney, a retired Methodist clergyman; two sons and their wives, David and Margaret Haney of Glassboro, N.J., John and Janene Haney of Fair Haven, N.J.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Cremation will be private.

Interment will be in Old Tenant Cemetery.

A memorial service for Mrs. Haney will be held at the First United Methodist Church, Seventh Avenue. and D Street in Belmar, on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at 3:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta, Mrs. Haney's home church.

Harry A. Wayman

PRATTSVILLE — Harry Arthur Wayman, of Prattsville, 84, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, after a lengthy illness.

A veteran of World War II, he was the son of Ella (Ree) and Arthur Wayman. He was born Feb. 20, 1917, in Charleston.

He is survived by three brothers and six sisters, Clayton of Stamford, Robert of Ashland, Nola Barlow of Caroga Lake, Ginny Conklin of Grand Gorge, Wanetta Porter and Evelyn Drake of Stamford, Shirley Scott of Grand Gorge, Pat Van Hartwick of South Kortight and Richard Wayman of Grand Gorge. Also surviving are several nephews and nieces with one special nephew and niece, Rick and Maxine Porter, with whom he made his home for several years.

He was predeceased by one sister, Laura Wayman.

He was employed for several years by A.W. Demerest Feed Co. and retired from Eklund's Farm Machinery, both of Stamford.

Harry never married and loved working on cars, country music and playing guitar and harmonica.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St. in Stamford, on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Waylen Bray officiating.

Interment will follow immediately in Stamford Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, under the direction of William A. Tari.
