Arlene M. Jester

DELHI — Arlene M. Jester, 73, of Delhi, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, in Hamden.

She was born Feb. 11, 1928, in Hamden, the daughter of Vernard and Hazel (Densmore) McDonald.

She was married to the late Aubrey Jester in 1946. He died in 1984.

Mrs. Jester worked for the Delaware County Highway Department for 44 years as the payroll clerk.

A daughter and son-in-law, Verna and Victor (Pete) Loker of Hamden; a granddaughter, Nicole Loker and her friend, Gary Secor, of Rochester; a grandson, Tim Loker of Hamden; sister, Agnes Miller of Hamden; and several nieces and nephews survive.

Two sisters, Ruth Miller and Dorothy Clark, and a brother, Arthur McDonald, predeceased her.

Funeral services will take place Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Delhi, with the Rev. Bert More officiating. Calling hours will be this evening, from 7 to 9, at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Woodland Cemetery in Delhi.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Delhi Emergency Squad or Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

L. Edward Hughes

ONEONTA — L. Edward Hughes, 84, of Oneonta, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital following a long illness.

He was born May 16, 1917, in Worcester, the son of Joseph and Rose Anne (Reilly) Hughes.

He married Helen Truax in St. Mary's Church in Oneonta in 1948. She died in 1972.

Ed owned and operated Ed Hughes' Service Station at 478 Main St. in Oneonta from 1947 until his retirement in 1985. Before opening his business, he was a driver for Oneonta Bus Lines.

Mr. Hughes was a graduate of Worcester High School. He was also communicant at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta and was an active member of the Oneonta Lions Club. He was honored as Lion of the Year in 1986.

He is survived by a son, Gary Hughes of Schenectady; a daughter-in-law, Susan L. Hughes; and two grandsons, Patrick and Adam Hughes. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Ernest Truax; sister-in-law, Alice Truax of Scotia; several nieces and nephews, Rosemary Miller of East Greenbush, Maynard and Shirley Fancher of Worcester, Morris and Jean France of Phoenix, Joan Lawton of Cranston, R.I., Gordon and Darlene Truax of Scotia, Marilyn Truax of Voorheesville and Richard and Joyce Truax of Leominster, Mass.; several cousins; and his close friend, Theresa Northrup of Oneonta.

He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Hughes Jr.; and three sisters, Gertrude Fancher, Elizabeth France and Lillian Simmons.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Worcester.

Friends may call Thursday evening, Aug. 16, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lester R.
Grummons Funeral Home — 14 Grand St. in Oneonta — at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, Mr. Hughes' family requests that contributions be made to the Oneonta Lions Club in his memory.

His family also wishes to thank the physicians, nurses and medical staff of Bassett Hospital whose professionalism and compassion was a source of comfort during Mr. Hughes' last days.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Fredericka Silvernail

SHARON SPRINGS — Mrs. Fredericka Waid Silvernail, 61, passed away Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, at The Meadows Nursing Home after complications from a severe case of diabetes.

She was born Feb. 10, 1940, in Cherry Valley, the daughter of Frederick and Marion (Moore) Countryman.

In 1956, she married Robert Waid in Worcester. He predeceased her after 39 years of marriage. On Aug. 30, 1996, she married Earle Silvernail at Freddy's home on Slate Hill in Sharon Springs. He survives.

Mrs. Silvernail worked as a nurses' aide and home health aide.

She was a member of the Moose Club and Sharon Springs Conservation Club.

Besides her husband, Earle Silvernail of Sharon Springs, she is survived by a son, Barry Waid, and daughter, Brenda King, both of Sharon Springs; grandchildren, Cheri of Yonkers and Alisha and Robert of Sharon Springs; brothers, Mike Piccolo of Warnerville, Lee Countryman of Sharon Springs, Fred Countryman Jr. of Burlington Flats, Steve Piccolo of Las Vegas and Ken Mcphialin of Hartwick; and her sister, Lillian Ilowiecki of Carlisle.

Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc. in Cherry Valley.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at 10 a.m. in the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Richard Bean of the Biking for God Ministries officiating.

Contributions in Mrs. Silvernail's memory can be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Sharon Springs Rescue Squad.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home of Cherry Valley.

William Daniels

ALVARADO,  Texas — William Albert Daniels Jr., 64, a maintenance supervisor, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at a Fort Worth,  Texas, Hospital.

William was born Nov. 24, 1936, in Otego, the son of William Albert and Imogene Walton Daniels.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the presbyterian church.

William Albert Daniels Jr. was preceded in death by his father, William Albert Daniels; brother, Adrian Lee Daniels; grandparents, Frank and Elma Culver Daniels and Charles and Anabell Walton; and his first wife, June Lenihan Daniels.

Survivors are his wife, Mary Ballard Daniels of Alvarado; children, William A. Daniels III and wife Kristi of Mansfield, Jane Williamson of Pasadena, Sharon Meyers and husband Bill of Bainbridge, Barry Daniels of Alvarado and David A. Pierce Jr. of Alvarado; mother, Imogene Walton Daniels Hover, and husband Kenneth of Bainbridge; grandchildren, Mindi Walls of Arlington, Holli and Jenni Daniels, both of Mansfield, and Helena and Chloe Meyer of Bainbridge; sister, Elma Daniels  Taylor and husband Raymond of Bainbridge; stepgrandchildren, Lacey and Clay Williamson of Houston; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at Blessing Colonial Chapel in Mansfield,  Texas. Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.

Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral arrangements are by Blessing Funeral Home of Mansfield,  Texas.

Thomas Hasson

STAMFORD — Thomas Jerrimiah Hasson, 51, died at home Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, after a lengthy illness.

Thomas was born March 3, 1950, in Norristown, Pa.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara S. Hasson; and his stepmother, Marjorie Hasson. Thomas was the beloved father of Teresa Hasson, Katherin Hasson, Michelle Vogt and Kurt Vogt. He was the loving brother of Kathleen Reilley, Patti Angelucci, Tim Hasson and Gerry Hasson. He was the devoted grandfather of Shane, Tristan, Aaron, Angelica and Shelby.

He was predeceased by his father and mother, Thomas J. Hasson and Teresa English Hasson.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home — 40 Main St. in Stamford — on Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, at 10 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Stamford.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home under the direction of William A. Tari.

Gilbert D. Matteson

SIDNEY — Gilbert D. Matteson, 85, of Sidney died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, in Sidney.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at the United Methodist Church in Sidney at 11 a.m., with the Rev. David Masland officiating.

Memorial contributions can be made to the United Methodist Church of Sidney.

Raymond Baker

ONEONTA — Raymond Charles Baker, 85, of Oneonta, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta after a short illness.

He was born March 25, 1916, in Oneonta, the son of Louis M. and Grace (Platt) Baker.

On March 25, 1945, he married Jean Stuck at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Ind. Mrs. Baker died May 12, 1998.

Mr. Baker graduated from Oneonta High School in 1934 and received a business administration degree from Hartwick College in 1938.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1939 to 1945, as a finance officer.

In 1946, he and his brother joined Baker Hardware on Main Street in Oneonta, which they owned and operated until 1973. Since 1974, Mr. Baker had been associated with Northrup Plumbing Supply Co. in Oneonta until his retirement in 1997.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oneonta, BPOE 1312 of Oneonta, American Legion Post 259, the Oneonta Country Club and was a former member of the town planning board.

He greatly enjoyed the game of golf and spent the last three winters in Florida.

He is survived by two daughters, Margaret B. Witherbee of Rixeyville, Va., and Suzanne B. Clark of Vestal; six grandchildren, Heather and Tim Gallien of Denver, Holly Gallien of Los Angeles, Justin Gallien of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Jason and Andrew Clark of Vestal; one sister, Mrs. James (Beatrice) Glamore of Smithtown; a sister-in-law, Sherry D. Baker of Oneonta; seven nieces and nephews, Mrs. James (Irene) Konstanty and Daniel L. Baker of Oneonta, Stephen F. Baker of Marysville, Kan., William, Robert and Elizabeth Glamore and Ann Glamore Brady; and several grandnieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at the First Presbyterian Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. Kenneth Baldwin officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Oneonta. The family will be receiving friends in the social hall of the church, following the service.

There will be no calling hours.

Those who wish can make contributions to either A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Hartwick College or the Oneonta Elks Club.

Arrangements are by Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St. in Oneonta.

Raymond C. Smith

BANGOR — Raymond C. Smith, 68, of Bangor, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at his home.

Born July 31, 1933, in Laconia, N.H., he was a son of Raymond and Dorothea Gage Smith.

On Aug. 18, 1962, he married Jane Wilson at the Bangor Methodist Church. She survives.

Mr. Smith graduated from Laconia High School in 1950. He continued his education at Plymouth State Teachers College in Plymouth, N.H., and graduated in 1954. He then attended Albany State Teachers College, graduating in 1963.

He began teaching social studies at Pittsburg High School in Pittsburg, N.H., and also coached girls' basketball.

He taught social studies at Grand Gorge, moved to Bangor in 1962, and taught social studies at Franklin Academy High School. He was the social studies department head.

Mr. Smith was a member of the North Bangor Methodist Church, New York State Retired Teachers, Franklin County Historical and Museum Society, Malone Duplicate Bridge Club, author of the "Bicentennial History of the Town of Bangor" and, in retirement, conducted an old book and antique business.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Jane; three daughters and a son-in-law, the Rev. Laurie Smith of Earlville, Mrs. Wade (Erin) Wood and Stephanie Rae Smith, all of Bangor; three grandchildren, Amanda, Kyle and Rebecca Wood, all of Bangor; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Charles B. Smith and his wife, Gerry, Robert H. Smith and his wife, Donna, Thomas P. Smith and his wife, Muriel, all of New Hampton, N.H., and Richard G. Smith of Manchester, N.H.; and a sister, Mrs. Donald Virginia Haas, also of New Hampton; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Anne Pindor of Grand Gorge; and a brother and sister-in-law, Keith and Harriet Wilson of Burnt Hills.

Calling hours for family and friends will be Thursday at the Spaulding Funeral Home of Malone, beginning at 10 a.m. until the funeral service in the funeral home chapel at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Tom Davis presiding. Interment will be in Bangor Cemetery.

The family requests memorial donations to Hospice of the North Country.

Funeral arrangements are by Spaulding Funeral Home Inc. of Malone.

Alice M. Platt

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Alice M. Platt, 91, of Cooperstown, died early Tuesday morning, Aug. 14, 2001, at The Meadows.

She was born on Oct. 2, 1909, in Hornell, a daughter of William and Elsie (Seifert) Horn.

She was married to Clarence D. Platt on March 22, 1930, in Oneonta. Mr. Platt died on May 18, 1988.

Alice was a resident of Oneonta and Cooperstown for most of her life.

She attended Oneonta schools and, for many years, was employed as a seamstress by the Oneonta Dress Factory. She retired in 1975.

She was a member of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church and its W.S.C.S. She was also a member of the Milford American Legion Unit 1566 Auxiliary and a former volunteer at Bassett Hospital.

Alice especially enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald C. and Gloria Platt of Blairsville, Ga., and William G. and Honey Platt of Westford; two daughters and sons-in-law, Evelyn and Charles Winkler of Blairsville, Ga., and Alice and Donald Roseboom of Toddsville; four grandchildren, Rebecca Platt, Robin Roberts and Charlene McCredie of Blairsville, Ga., and Jeanette Nelson of Crystal Rock,  Colo.; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a sister, Edith Morin; a brother, Alfred Horn; and a grandson, Darryl Platt.

Graveside services and burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, with the Rev. Thomas E. Pullyblank, pastor of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations can be made to the activity fund at The Meadows, P.O. Box 400, Cooperstown, NY 13326, or the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 128, Fly Creek, NY 13337.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home of Cooperstown.

Meta Foster

BAINBRIDGE — Meta Foster, 77, of Juliand Street in Bainbridge lost her quiet battle with cancer at the Valley View Manor Nursing Home in Norwich on Monday evening, Aug. 13, 2001.

She was born July 31, 1924, in Newbliss, Co. Monaghan, Ireland, the daughter of the late Samuel and Tillie Sloan Foster and the little sister of Victor and Howard. The family immigrated to the United States in the early 1930s, settling in Bainbridge.

Meta graduated from the Bainbridge High School Class of 1944, and went on to become a licensed practical nurse. The family opened Chenango County's first nursing facility, The Conamore Home on Front Street. Meta spent her entire life caring for others at The Conamore, and at the Juliand Street residence she shared with her mother, Tillie, until her death in 1984.

Meta had a strong faith in Christ, which sustained her throughout her entire life.

She is survived by her brother, Victor; and his children, Gary and Kathie Foster of Bainbridge, Vickie and Mitch Glover of Sidney and Dale and Liz Foster of Bainbridge; and Howard's children, David and Kathy Hohreiter Foster of Gonzales, La., Alicia and David Palmer of Union Springs, John and Mary Foster of Auburn and Richard and Penny Foster of Union Springs. Several great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. in Sidney. Burial will follow in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge.

Friends are invited to call from 1 p.m. until service time at 3 p.m. with her family in attendance at the funeral chapel.

Memorial gifts can be directed to the Bainbridge Emergency Squad, Bainbridge, NY 13733 or the Greenlawn Cemetery Association, 47 Greenlawn Ave., Bainbridge, NY 13733.

Ida B. Moss

OXFORD — Mrs. Ida B. Moss, 86, a resident of the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford, and formerly of 11 Knapp St. in Sidney, passed away peacefully Monday morning, Aug. 13, 2001, at her residence in Oxford.

She was born May 29, 1915, in Unadilla, the daughter of the late Newton and Mable Holliday Burton.

On Dec. 8, 1979, she married Clarence E. Moss in Unadilla. He predeceased her Aug. 1, 1999.

Ida was a lifelong area resident. She was a member of the Women of the Moose #502 in Sidney.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Pat Hamilton Sr. of Sidney and Kenneth and Linda Hamilton of Little River, S.C.; daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and George Walker of Norwich; brother and sister-in-law, Ernest and Beverly Burton of Otego and Florida; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews and cousins.

A brother, Harold Burton; and three sisters, Frances Kinch, Nora Welsh and Edna Edwards predeceased her.

Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. in Sidney. Burial will be private in the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Friends are invited to call from 7 p.m. until services at 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in her name can be directed to the N.Y. State Veterans Home, Oxford, NY 13830.
