Thelma B. Brown

OTEGO — Thelma B. Brown, 76, of Otego, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001, after a long extended illness, with her loving family present at her side.

She was born Jan. 6, 1925, in Otego, the daughter of Charles and Dorothy (Scofield) Hamilton.

She married Donald A. Brown on Feb. 14, 1942. He died June 26, 1990.

Thelma was a lifelong area resident of Otego. She was an assessor for Otego for 23 years and had served as chairwoman of the assessors from 1988-2001.

At one time she worked for Bruno's Grocery Store in Oneonta, and had also worked as a school aide at the Otego Elementary School. She also was employed at the Gardenview Nursing Home in Otego, as well as having sold real estate for DeMulder Mang Real Estate.

She is survived by her children, Donna Rose of Otego, Donald F. Brown and his wife, Patti, of Stuart, Fla., James D. Brown and his wife, Tammi, of Otego, Terry E. Brown and his wife, Ellen, of Otego, Stephen D. Brown and his wife, Julie, of Jensen Beach, Fla., Michael A. Brown and his wife, Roxi, of Otego, Deborah L. Bresee and her husband, Randy, of Mount Upton, Janice E. Miller and her husband, Ron, of Wells Bridge, Douglas C. Brown and his wife, Karen, of Otego, and Jill L. Brown of Otego; one brother, Charles Duane Scofield of Schenevus; 38 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Thelma was predeceased by a sister, Betty Jubar; a granddaughter, Kerrie Ann Brown; and a great-granddaughter, Sheri Lea Mowers.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 34 River St., Otego, with the Rev. Stephen Miller, pastor of the Otego Christian Church, Otego, officiating.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego, after 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31, 2001. The family will be present at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31, 2001. Burial will be in the Bundy Cemetery, Otego.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Otego Emergency Squad, Catskill Area Hospice or to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in memory of Thelma's granddaughter, Kerrie Ann Brown.

The family would like to thank the Catskill Area Hospice workers who attended Thelma during her illness.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Lawrence M. Swift

SOUTH NEW BERLIN — Lawrence M. Swift, 75, of South New Berlin, N.Y. died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at home in Amblerville, N.Y.

He was born Feb. 28, 1926, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to William and Aldona (Czarnomski) Swift.

He married Pauline Anne Hixson on June 26, 1948. She died April 27, 1993.

His childhood was spent in Staten Island, N.Y., and Changewater, N.J. He attended Brooklyn Tech, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and  Washington High School in  Washington, N.J.

He was a U.S. Postmaster in Changewater from 1952 to 1972. He formed a partnership with his brother called "Swift Brothers," manufacturing leather goods for binocular, camera and instrument cases. The Swift brothers also owned and operated Stewart's Drive-In in  Washington, N.J., from 1956 to 1972.

He was a charter member of the  Washington Township Fire Department in New Jersey, and served on the  Washington Township Board of Adjustment. He also served on the town of New Berlin, N.Y., Planning Board and Board of Assessment Review.

He served his country in the United States Navy as an aviation machinist mate from 1944 to 1946.

He is survived by a daughter, Anne Cullen of Strafford, N.H.; four sons, Richard Swift of South New Berlin, N.Y., David Swift of Las Vegas, Nev., William Swift of Belvidere, N.J., and Frederick Swift, of Parkton, Md.; 12 grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth Swift of South New Berlin, N.Y. and sister, Jane Duryea of Changewater, N.J.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.

A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at 1 p.m. in the Riverside Cemetery, South New Berlin, with the Rev. Larry Bailey of the Church of Christ in Sidney, officiating.

Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, South New Berlin.

Donations may be made to the South New Berlin Emergency Squad, South New Berlin, NY 13843.

Arline G. Kenny

SIDNEY — Arline G. Kenny, 84, of Sidney, passed away Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at The Hospital in Sidney.

She was born March 2, 1917, daughter of the late William and Eleanor (McDermott) Murphy in Brooklyn.

Arline married Thomas J. Kenny on Oct. 29, 1938. He predeceased her on March 13, 1990.

Mrs. Kenny was employed as an office manager for Sears and Roebuck for more than 35 years before retirement.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Camille Kenny of Sidney; two grandchildren Michael Kenny of Sidney, Denise and Dale Miner of Sidney; four great-grandchildren, Robert and Ashley Kenny and Nicole and Brianna Miner.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at Sacred Heart Church, Sidney at 11 a.m. The Rev. Father Gordon Polenz, pastor, will officiate.

Friends may call Tuesday. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Sally W. Collins

MILFORD — Sally Woodrow Collins, 93, of Milford, died unexpectedly, Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at Fox Hospital.

She was born Nov. 26, 1907, in Lattingtown, L.I., the daughter of William and Margaret (McClenaghan) Woodrow.

She married Lynn Collins in March of 1965 at the Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown. Mr. Collins died in 1967.

Mrs. Collins lived in her home in Milford for the past 40 years. She was a life member of the First Presbyterian Church of Milford and the Susquehanna Senior Citizens Club.

She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law Elizabeth Scutt and Margaret and Robert Steidle; one sister, Ruth Woodrow, all of Oneonta; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and cousins.

There will be no calling hours.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2001, at the Westville Cemetery in Westville, N.Y., with the Rev. Al Bullard, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Milford, officiating.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Naomi Schneider

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Naomi H. Schneider, 77, of Woodland Road, died peacefully on Friday morning, Aug. 31, 2001, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born on May 12, 1924, in Hopbottom, Pa., a daughter of the late Walter and Velma Little Hoppe.

Raised and educated in  Pennsylvania, she graduated from Nicholson High School, Nicholson, Pa. Continuing her education, she graduated from Oneonta State Teachers College with a degree in elementary education. She later earned her master's degree from Adelphi University, Long Island.

On July 23, 1955, she married George Schneider.

For more than 37 years she enjoyed a rewarding teaching career with the Hewlett-Woodmere School District, Long Island, focusing on elementary education. In the 1970s her primary teaching was in special education until retiring in 1988.

The family spent more than 40 years of summer vacations at their camp on Lake Canadarago. After her retirement, Naomi and her husband moved to Richfield Springs, spending the winter months with each of their five children.

For 63 years she had been involved with the Grange. She was a current member of the Otsego/Susquehanna Valley Grange #1417, receiving a 50-year member recognition in 2000, a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association, an alumni of SUNY and a member of the Mask and Hammer Society theater group of Oneonta State University.

A fun-loving person, she had many diverse interests. Reading, traveling, cross-stitch, sewing costumes for the children's school plays, swimming, cooking and putting on skits for the Grange were among her leisure-time pleasures. She was an avid sports fan, enjoying all sports, especially baseball, basketball and football. She was an accomplished vocalist and musician who played the piano as well as the tuba.

Surviving are her husband of 47 years, George; two sons and their wives, Timothy and Shirley Valdez-Hall of Littleton,  Colo., and George M. and Janet Schneider of York, S.C.; three daughters and their husbands, Margaret and Douglas  White of Rome, Jean and Carl Coakley Jr. of King George, Va., and Madeline and Thomas J. Mills Jr., of Lynbrook; seven grandchildren, Melissa and Andrew  White, Amanda, Timothy and Damien Roser, Katie Coakley and Sean Mills; five great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her two sisters, Esther Robinson and Mary Jerauld.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, at 10 a.m. in St. Peters Church, Rome, with the Rev. Philip A. Hearn, pastor, officiating.

Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Transfiguration Catholic School, 400 S. James St., Rome, N.Y. 13440.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Steven Petriski

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Steven John Petriski, 79, of Parmwood Road, passed away on Friday night, Aug. 31, 2001, in his home after a long illness.

A lifelong area resident, he was born on Jan. 9, 1922, in Marcy, son of the late Roman and Mary Senata Petriski.

In 1932, he and his family moved to the town of Warren where they owned and operated the Bluebird Meadows Dairy Farm.

He was a graduate of VanHornesville High School.

During World War II he answered the call of his country by enlisting in the United States Army. He served in the European Theatre and was awarded the Purple Heart. After being honorably discharged from military service he returned to Warren and along with his brother, Michael, eventually took over the operation of the family dairy farm.

On July 5, 1952, he married Evelyn Frazier in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs. They resided on the family farm to this day. Mr. Petriski along with his son, Steven Jr., was still active in the running of the farm until this past year.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Richfield Springs and the Hugick-Purcell and Shepardson American Legion Post #616 in Richfield Springs.

Steven was a friend to many and will never be forgotten.

Surviving besides his loving wife of 49 years, Evelyn, are a son, Steven J. Petriski Jr. and his wife, Beverly; a daughter, Mary Jo Smith, all of the town of Warren; a sister, Mary Ablamski of Rosedale; two granddaughters, Sarah and Anne Petriski of Warren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Petriski in 1992 and Michael Petriski in 1993; three sisters, Ann Eichner in 1987, Kate McKean in 1992 and Josephine Petavs in 2000.

A funeral service from J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 W. James St. in Richfield Springs will be at 9:30 a.m. today, Tuesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Joseph's Church in Richfield Springs at 10:20 a.m. with the Rev. Alfred Lamanna officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.

The family was present at the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Monday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation. Envelopes will be available in the funeral home.

William Cranston

WALTON — William E. Cranston, 79, of Walton, died at his home on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001.

Bill was born Oct. 31, 1921, in Delhi, the son of Wilbur and Amelia (Evans) Cranston.

He married Frederika Vanderzee on Sept. 29, 1945, at the Walton Methodist Church.

He served in the Air Force during World War II as a pilot with the 490th bomb group stationed in England. Lt. Cranston flew 30 missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He also held the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America and was a Scout leader.

Bill worked as an agent for Prudential Insurance for more than 30 years, retiring 24 years ago. He remained active as a real estate appraiser for banks, the VA and the private sector.

As a member of the Walton United Methodist Church, Bill was a Sunday School teacher and treasurer of the board of trustees. He was a member of the administrative board and choir member.

Also active in community affairs, Bill belonged to the Walton Lions Club and was a past president; served as Walton town councilman and was on the Walton village Planning Board; Townsend Hose Co. of the Walton Fire Department; American Legion post and past commander and VFW post of Walton; and was a member of the board of the former Delaware County Federal Savings and Loan, and the Sidney Center O&W Railroad Club.

Surviving are his wife, Frederika, of Walton; daughter, Sally Cranston of  Washington, D.C.; sons, Gerald of Eldon, Iowa, and James of Fernley, Nev.; sister, Alice Neice of Walton; and three grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his son Thomas in 1983.

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 4, 2001, at the Walton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Chervelle Phillip, pastor, officiating. Burial following in Walton Cemetery.

Memorials to Catskill Area Hospice or the United Methodist Church Board of Trustees in the name of William Cranston will be appreciated.

Dorothea Bartholomew

GRAND GORGE — Miss Dorothea E. Bartholomew, 92, of state Route 23, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, following a long illness.

Miss Bartholomew was born in Grand Gorge on Feb. 8, 1909, a daughter of Ford and Mae Dickson Bartholomew, and had been a lifelong resident.

She retired in June 1970 following 39 years of teaching junior high in the Middleburgh Central School District. Previously she had taught in the Grand Gorge School District.

Miss Bartholomew was a graduate of Stamford Training School and had further studies at the Oneonta Normal School and State University at Albany.

Surviving Miss Bartholomew are a brother, Charles Bartholomew of Grand Gorge; and several cousins.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, in Fair View Cemetery in Grand Gorge, with the Rev. Larry Major, pastor of the Grand Gorge Pilgrim Holiness Church, officiating. A calling hour will be held on Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 63 River St., Middleburgh.

Memorial contributions may be made to Pilgrim Holiness Church, Grand Gorge, N.Y. 12434.

Beverly Mae Ball

CHARLOTTEVILLE — Beverly Mae Ball, 64, a resident of Charlotteville for more than 40 years, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, after a long illness.

She was born Jan. 18, 1937, in Summit, the daughter of Maurice and Carrie (Helligas) Terrell, both of whom predeceased her.

She was the loving wife of Gary Ball, who she married on Aug. 2, 1958, in Northville, and the beloved mother of Cindy and her husband, Phil  White, of Charlotteville, Sharie and her husband, Duane Normandin, of Middlegrove, Gary Ball Jr. of Charlotteville and Allyson and her husband, Jeff Lorrette, of Prattsville.

Also surviving are her brother, Glen and his wife, Betty Terrell of Broadalbin; two sisters, Shirley and her husband, Richard Bailey, of Northville and Joan and her husband, Kenneth Monroe, of Johnstown; her mother-in-law, Emma Ball of East Worcester; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

At Mrs. Ball's request, she was cremated and a memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Ball to Bassett Healthcare Hospital, 1 Atwell Drive, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Bertha Sheffer

ROCKVILLE, Md. — Bertha Marie (Tegen) Sheffer, 69, recently of Rockville, Md., died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at her home after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born Dec. 18, 1931, in Kennan, Wis., the daughter of Steffen Carl Tegen and Helen C. Arndt Tegen.

She was a graduate of the Eau Claire School of the Milwaukee Accredited Schools of Beauty Culture.

She married George A. Sheffer on June 6, 1954, in Kennan, Wis. Bertha is predeceased by her husband, George.

She is survived by her son, Karl, his wife, Monica, and their daughter, Courtney, of Pottstown, Pa., a son, Kenneth, his wife, Joanna, and their children, Christopher and Nicole of Spring City, Pa.; daughter Karen of Rockville, Md., daughter Susan Boest and her husband, Gary, and their children, Erin and Daniel of Morris, N.Y., and daughter, Kimberly of Utica, N.Y. She is also survived by her brother, Walter Tegen; and sisters Evelyn Heise and Dorothy Tegen, all of Kennan, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are by the Robert A. Pumphrey Funeral Home of Rockville, Md.

Sally W. Collins
