Robert W. Shafer

MARGARETVILLE — Robert W. Shafer, 82, of Margaretville, passed away Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

He was born Oct. 20, 1918, in Roxbury, the son of Amasa Shafer and Eva Weed.

He married Marie Long on May 14, 1944, in New Brunswick, N.J.

He was in the United States Army from May 1942 to January 1946.

He was a watchmaker and had a jewelry store in Margaretville for 15 years. He was employed at the Peoples National and the National Bank & Trust Co. of Norwich in Margaretville, Audio Sears in Roxbury, General Electric Co. in  Johnson City and IBM in Kingston from which he retired in 1982.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Margaretville; the American Legion Post 216; was former president of the Margaretville Chamber of Commerce; former secretary of Margaretville Rotary Club; exempt member of the Margaretville Fire Department; the Catskill 3500 Club #288; and an avid hiker. He was a Ham radio operator and one of the founders of the Margaretville Amateur Radio Club.

He is survived by his wife, Marie Shafer, of Margaretville; two daughters, Margaret Shafer of Hamburg and Joan and her husband, Thomas Roberts, of Cobleskill; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one brother, Paul, and one sister, Grace Snegoski.

Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at 10 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church in Margaretville, with the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell officiating. Burial will be in Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Contributions may be made to the Ambulance Fund of the Margaretville Memorial Hospital or Catskill Area Hospice Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Paul O. Meadows

ONEONTA — Paul O. Meadows, 78, of Oneonta, died Tuesday evening, Sept. 18, 2001, after a valiant battle with Multiple Myeloma.

He was born on Oct. 24, 1922, in Lynchburg, Va., the son of Paul O. Meadows Sr. and Maude (Grubbs) Meadows. His father died when Paul was 3 and he was raised by his stepfather, the late Guy Place, in Walton.

He married Marthe-Marie Methot on Nov. 19, 1956, in Fall River, Mass.

Paul earned degrees from State Teachers College, Albany, the University of Wisconsin and Columbia University.

He taught at Hadley-Luzerne Central School, Hobart and William Smith College, the State University College at Potsdam and from 1957-1990, at the State University College at Oneonta. At Oneonta, he rebuilt the foreign language department, which he served as coordinator from 1957-1969 and as chairman until 1975.

Paul loved languages and had a special interest in Latin, Hebrew, Arabic, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian and French.

He was a Fulbright Graduate Scholar in France in 1955.

Paul was a gifted photographer, a talent he shared generously with his children. He was a devoted husband and father and a brilliant, patient and caring teacher.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Martie at home; his three children, Monique of Phoenix, Ariz., Marc and his wife, Janice of Buffalo, and Denise of Keene, N.H.; six grandchildren, Alison, Rebecca, Jarrod, Emmylou, Queline and Theo; his brother, Guy Place and family of Fayetteville, N.C.; cousins, LaVenna Alger of Walton and Virginia LaRose of Selma, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews.

Paul was a member of St. Mary's Church, Oneonta.

At Paul's request, he will be cremated and a memorial liturgy will be held later at the convenience of the family. His ashes will be interred in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

There will be no calling hours.

To support students preparing to teach foreign languages, a scholarship has been established in Paul's name. Memorial gifts are appreciated and may be directed to the College at Oneonta Foundation, Office of College Advancement, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Arlene E. Bell

COOPERSTOWN — Arlene Elizabeth Bell, 87, died early Wednesday morning, Sept. 19, 2001, at Woodside Hall in Cooperstown.

She was born on Jan. 1, 1914, in Valley Falls, a daughter of William and Nellie (Haggerty) Dorr.

She married Joseph Edward Bell on Jan. 14, 1945, in Fort Monmouth, N.J. Mr. Bell died on Jan. 14, 1983.

Arlene grew up in Valley Falls and graduated from Troy High School. She later graduated from Russell Sage College in Troy and then received her master's degree in education from Syracuse University.

She taught home economics in several high school systems, including Hunter-Tannersville, Huntington, Long Island and Watertown.

Following their marriage, Arlene and her husband operated the family dairy farm in Valley Falls until their retirement in 1978. After retiring Arlene and Joseph moved to Milford, and for the past three years she has made her home at Woodside Hall in Cooperstown.

She was a member of St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, the American Legion Ladies' Auxiliary in Milford and was a former active member of the Hoosic Valley Central School Board of Education.

She especially enjoyed sewing, quilting and gardening.

Arlene is survived by three daughters, Marilyn Barretta and her husband, Anthony of Holland Patent, Lorraine Ives and her husband, Thomas and Eloise Campbell and her husband, Christopher, all of Cherry Valley; and seven grandchildren, Joseph Barretta, Ann Barretta, Kathryn Ives, Kristina Ives, Samuel Campbell, Benjamin Campbell and Dakin Campbell.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Cherry Valley at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, with the Rev. John R. Roos officiating. Committal services and burial will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. John's Cemetery in Schaghticoke.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. when Arlene's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, Arlene's family has requested that expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts be made to the New York City Disaster Relief Fund, in care of the American Red Cross, 101 Main St., Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Mary F. Russell

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. — Mary F. Russell, 85, of Ellicott City, Md., and formerly of Unadilla, N.Y., passed away Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, in Ellicott City, Md.

She was born July 21, 1916, in Reading, Pa., the daughter of Charles F. and Lena (Fredenburg) Ferry.

She was married to Howard T. Russell on June 30, 1938, in Masonville, N.Y. Mr. Russell predeceased her on May 7, 1996.

She was a graduate of Sidney High School, Class of 1933, and a 1936 graduate of Oneonta State Normal School.

She was a retired elementary school teacher and had taught in Masonville and Mount Upton schools.

Mrs. Russell was a member and former elder and member of the choir of the First Presbyterian Church of Unadilla, a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association and a past member of the Unadilla Women's Club.

She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Beth Schultheis of Beltsville, Md., and Karen and George Shaver of Glenwood Springs,  Colo.; her sons and daughters-in-law, Dana and Marsha Russell of Moravia, N.Y., and Theron and Pamela Russell of Baltimore, Md.; also 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Clydie Ferring of Kerrville,  Texas; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her sister, Helen F. Gould, and her brother, Harvey B. Ferry.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, at the First Presbyterian Church of Unadilla, with the Rev. Allen L. Presby, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Unadilla, Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Unadilla, or to the charity of your choice.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Sam T. Stam

ONEONTA — Sam T. Stam, 85, passed away at the New York State Veteran's Home in Oxford on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, after a long bout with Alzheimer's.

Sam was born on April 26, 1916, in Lawrence, Kan., to Thomas and Artemisia Stam.

He graduated from Chapman High School in Kansas, and attended Emporia State University in Kansas, where he was a star football player.

During World War II, Sam served with the Army's 231st engineering company in the Aleutian Islands as a first sergeant. He was awarded the American Defense Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

Sam lived in Los Angeles after the war.

He later visited his sister, Mary, and brother-in-law, Nick Farmakis, in Oneonta and decided to move to Oneonta in 1953.

He married Helen Lambros on May 17, 1954.

Sam joined LaMonica Beverages in 1953, as a salesman, later becoming sales manager until his retirement in 1985. Sam was respected widely throughout the sales region for his diligence and professionalism.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter, Nick and Linda Stam of Newtown, Pa., and Tom and Carol Stam of LaPine, Ore., and his daughter, Stephanie, and Gunter Steege of Beverly, Mass. Sam is also survived by five grandsons, Christopher and Gregory Stam, Alex and Nikolas Steege and Darle Stam. He is also survived by his brother, Nick, and his wife, Barbara Stam, of Glendora,  Calif.

He leaves many dear nieces and nephews and two brothers- and sisters-in-law, Nick and Sharon Lambros and George and Mary Lambros, all of Oneonta.

Sam was predeceased by his sister, Mary, and brother-in-law, Nick Farmakis.

Sam was a member of the Oneonta Elks Club and the American Legion, and he was an avid Oneonta sports fan and loved socializing with people. You could always find him at every Oneonta Yankees home game in his box seat, along the first-base line, and every Hartwick College basketball home game coached by his brother-in-law, Nick Lambros. Best of all, he was just a great all-around person who really knew how to enjoy life.

Funeral services will be held at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home at 51 Dietz St. in Oneonta, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, with the Rev. Douglas Gray, Presbyterian minister, officiating. Burial will follow in Plains Cemetery in Oneonta.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Leatherstocking Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 1364, Oneonta, NY 13820 or the New York State Veteran's Home, Oxford, N.Y.

Philomenia Booan

COOPERSTOWN — Philomenia J. Booan, 86, of Cooperstown, died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born Nov. 26, 1914, in Bethel, Vt., daughter of Vincenzo and Angelina Perno.

Philomenia was a graduate of Cooperstown Central School, Class of 1934.

She married Carmen V. Booan on Aug. 25, 1934, at St. Mary's Church in Cooperstown. She was predeceased by her husband on Dec. 23, 1978.

A devoted wife, she was a lifelong volunteer with the American Red Cross and with Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital.

In later years, she was employed with the Otsego County Court as an attendant.

She is survived by her son, Joseph D. Booan Sr. of Roanoke, Va.; her daughter, Mrs. Gerald O'Neil of Rensselaer; and her eight grandchildren, Joseph D. Booan Jr. of Cooperstown, Theresa Schmitt of Salem, Va., Alisa Buchanan of Roanoke, Va., James Booan of Roanoke, Va., and Gerald O'Neil, Stephen O'Neil, Jeniffer O'Neil and Maureen O'Neil, all of Albany; and her eight great-grandchildren, Katherine, Carmen, Thomas, Emily, Vincent, Jocyline, Jasmine and Kimberly.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Mary's Church at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, with the Rev. John Rosson, administrator, officiating. Burial will immediately follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, located in Index.

In lieu of gifts, please send donations to the Cooperstown Central School Alumni Association.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service of Cooperstown and Milford.

Kenneth Gielskie

DELANCEY — Kenneth H. Gielskie, 52, of Miramar, Fla., and formerly of DeLancey, passed away Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, in Miami.

The son of the late John and Mary P. (Burk) Gielskie, he was born Dec. 10, 1948, in Albany, attended Delaware Academy in Delhi and, subsequently, Christian Brothers Academy in Albany, graduating in 1967. He continued his education at Syracuse University and, later, at State University College of Technology at Delhi, where he received his associate's degree in 1985.

Ken was an avid reader, had a keen interest in horses and worked on the family farm in DeLancey before moving to Orlando, Fla., in 1990, where he was employed by SAS Truck and Equipment Inc., until illness forced his retirement several months ago, at which time he moved to Miramar, Fla.

Surviving are his brothers, David Gielskie and family of Hamden and Alex Gielskie and family of DeLancey; sisters, Virginia Bartkow of Huntington, W.Va., Alice Beatty and family of Miramar, Fla., Margaret Conner and family of Walton, and Marian and her husband, George Fountain, of Afton; and several nieces and nephews.

A brother, Francis "Frank" Gielskie, predeceased him in 1984.

The Rev. Bert More will conduct graveside committal services at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, at the Gielskie family plot in Hamden Cemetery, with burial under the direction of Hall & Peet Funeral Home of Delhi.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet and Son of Delhi.

Elma L. Halbert

BRADENTOWN, Fla. — Elma L. Halbert, 76, went peacefully to be with the Lord after a brief stay in A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, on Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at 4:40 a.m.

Elma Linnie Lobdell was born in Otego on Sept. 24, 1924. Her parents were Linnie Carvin Lobdell and Ivan Lobdell, affectionately known as Ma and Pa Lobdell. She attended Lobdell School District on Briar Creek, where she was raised. She attended Gilbertsville Central School from 1936, graduating in 1942.

She was married to James Bard Halbert in Otego on Nov. 25, 1942, at the home of her sister, Norma Lobdell Bundy. The Rev. MacPherson of Otego Baptist Church officiated and Gertrude Halbert, sister-in-law, and Burton Lobdell, brother, were in attendance. Both were employed at Bendix at that time.

They resided in Gilbertsville for a time and then at Copes Corners, later living in Otego after her husband returned from World War II. Shortly after surviving cancer operations in 1958, they moved to Bradenton, Fla., there to spend the next 41 years.

She spent many, many years as a waitress, beginning at age 14, at Wilber Mansion in Otego, Maple Terrace Motel and Oneonta Country Club in the Oneonta area, Harts Hill Inn and Blue Moon Cafe in the Utica area, and many establishments in Florida, ending with The Seafood Shack in Cortez, Anna Marie Island, Fla.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, James B. Halbert of Bradenton, Fla.; two sons, Richard and his wife, Carolyn, of Otego, N.Y., Dennis and wife, Robin, of Mililani, Hawaii; two daughters, Sandra Halbert Powers of Bradenton, Fla., and Cynthia and her husband, Reed Schulz, of Colon, Panama; a sister, Norma and her husband, Burnette Bundy, of Otego, N.Y.; one brother, Burton Lobdell and his wife, Lenora, of Oneonta, N.Y.; sisters-in-law Marion Lobdell of The Hampshire House Adult Home in Oneonta and Helena Lobdell of  Pennsylvania.

Elma is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Helen and her husband, Charles Prentice, of Montrose, Pa., Georgianna Halbert of Gilbertsville, Joyce Halbert of New Berlin, N.Y., and Palmetto, Fla., Gertrude and her husband, Peter D'Ambrosio, of Yeadon, Pa., Charlotte and her husband, Melvin Oliphant, of Chenango Bridge, N.Y. She was predeceased by a brother-in-law, Robert W. Halbert, in 2001 and brother-in-law T. Russell Halbert in 1990.

Elma is predeceased by three brothers, Raymond in 1991, Stanley in 1977 and Cecil Lobdell in 1968; and by a sister-in-law, Eva Wilber Lobdell of Otego.

Elma will be missed by her many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. She loved to travel throughout the country spending time with her children.

The family will be in attendance Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. with a special prayer service at 4 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Sept. 24, at 11 a.m. at Susquehanna Valley Baptist Church, County Highway 48, Back River Otego Road, Oneonta, with Pastor Bruce McCardle officiating.

Graveside committal services will be at Brookside Cemetery, Gilbertsville, N.Y., at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Don Boardman officiating.

Elma is a past member of Otego Baptist Church, Otego, and Bayshore Baptist in Bradenton, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, as Elma was a 1958 cancer survivor or The American Baptist Church of the Resurrection, 5129 72nd St., East Bradenton, FL 34203, of which Elma was a charter member.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.
