Norma W. Swift

ONEONTA — Norma W. (Mrs. Frederic Fay) Swift, formerly of Oneonta, died on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, following a brief stay at Kirkhaven in Rochester, N.Y.

Born Norma Caroline Wood on Jan. 21, 1920, in Bridgcport, Conn., Mrs. Swift grew up in Ilion, N.Y. Following her graduation from Ilion High School, she completed her bachelor's and master's degrees in music education at Ithaca College.

While teaching in the Tully (N.Y.) Central Schools, she was also the director of the famed Tully Melody Men and oversaw their coast-to-coast radio broadcasts during World War II.

Following an extended hospital stay from a near-fatal car accident, she resumed her teaching career in the Cato-Meridian (N.Y.) Central Schools.

In 1951, she married Dr. Frederic Fay Swift of Hartwick College and moved to Oneonta.

A lifelong Presbyterian and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oneonta, Mrs. Swift was also a sister of Sigma Alpha Iota international fraternity for women in music and was responsible for the charter of the Hartwick College chapter.

She maintained her membership in the Order of the Eastern Star, served in various offices of the Hartwick College Women's Association, was an honorary member of Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, was one of the founders of the New York State Music Camp (now the Hartwick College Summer Music Festival and Institute) and an avid NY Yankee fan. As a professional proofreader, she partnered with her husband on his 54 text books and hundreds of choral compositions.

Although pre-deceased by her daughter Nancy S. Cook and granddaughter Donna S. Stagg (both of Ohio), Mrs. Swift is survived by her children and their spouses/life partners, including Dr. Robert F. (Margot) Swift of Plymouth, N.H., David W. (Patricia) Swift of Braham, Minn., the Rev. Deborah Fae (Tina Horth) Swift of Rochester, N.Y., her son-in-law Jack M. Cook of Canal-Winchester, Ohio; her grandchildren, A. William Sprague of Canal-Winchester, Ohio, Kimberly A. Swift of Sunberg, Minn., William Frederic ("Rick") Swift of Braham, Minn., Jeffrey Robert Swift and Jennifer Huffman-Swift (Duncan) of Seattle, Wash., and Carly Fae Swift-Horth of Rochester, N.Y.; as well as seven great-grandchildren.

Norma Swift's life will be celebrated at a memorial service at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at the First Presbyterian Church in Oneonta, N.Y. A coffee-hour sponsored by the church will begin at noon before the service with interment following at Glenwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions may be made in her name to either the Future For Oneonta Foundation or the First Presbyterian Church of Oneonta.

Arrangements are being handled by Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta.

Esther A. Olmstead

WALTON — Esther Archer Tinklepaugh Olmstead, 86, of Walton, died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, in Walton.

She was born June 23, 1915, in Greene, N.Y., to Wallace and Rachel (Wells) Foster. She graduated from Mount Upton High School and the State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill. She married Harry Olmstead on Aug. 18, 1995.

Esther was a member of the Masonville Federated Church, Nineveh Presbyterian Church and Walton First Congregational Church of Christ. She was a past member of Masonville Grange, Delaware County Grange, Past Matron of Masonville Order of Eastern Star #345, 4-H leader in the Afton community and also a member of the Afton School Board of Education.

She served on Chenango County Cooperative Extension Service, worked on the Board of Election and was active in making quilts for the homeless.

Esther Olmstead is survived by her husband, Harry Olmstead of Walton; three daughters, Mrs. Earl (Mary) Reiling of Afton, Marion Harris Martine of Atlantic Beach, N.C., and Maryln A. Pease of Hancock; a son, Olon B. Archer of Emerald Isle, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Benjamin and Blaine Reiling, Barbara Boudreau and Christopher Archer of Afton, Jacqualine Murray of Waterford, N.Y., Tracy Harris of Pacific Grove,  Calif., Robert Marvin of Bainbridge, N.Y., Steven Pease of Oakridge, N.J., and Matthew Archer, of Raleigh, N.C. Many nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren and step-children and grandchildren also survive.

She is predeceased by husbands Rufus B. Archer and Gorton Tinklepaugh, a daughter, Mrs. Joseph (Marcia) Homlak, and two grandsons, Michael Pease and Gregory Harris.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home at the corner of North and Delaware streets in Walton, where friends may call Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, from 3 to 5 p.m.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 24, at the First Congregational Church of Christ on North Street in Walton, with the Rev. Paul Cronin and the Rev. Doug Horne officiating.

Burial will follow in Andes Cemetery, Andes, N.Y.

Memorial contributions to the Cancer Society, Heart Association or Diabetes Association of Chenango or Delaware County would be appreciated.

Elly Bremser

SOUTHBURY, Conn. — Elly Bremser, 95, of Southbury, Conn., and formerly of Sidney, N.Y., passed away Friday morning Sept. 21, 2001, in Connecticut

She was born Oct. 26, 1905, in Hayerswwerda, Germany, the daughter of the late Hugo and Johanna Sachs Karnatz.

On Jan. 31, 1928, she married Albert T. Bremser in Darmstadt, Germany. He predeceased her on Sept. 28, 1950. Mrs. Bremser came to the United States in March of 1928 and lived in Sidney, N.Y., since 1937. For the past 10 years, she had been a resident of the Mediplex of Southbury, Conn.

She was a member of the Sidney First Congregational Church and was a deaconess for many years. Elly was also a member of the Monday Club, Life Member of the Sidney Historical Society, Town and Country Garden Club, Hospital Guild, the Red Cross and a former member of Sidney BPW.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Hannelore and Richard Dunne of Canton, N.Y., Helma and R. Donald Chartier of Monroe, Conn.; one son and daughter-in-law, Albert H. and Shirley Bremser of Lynchburg, Va.; seven grandchildren, Kerrie Dunne of Cheshire, Conn., Kathleen Waters of Watertown, Conn., Donald A. Chartier of Chicago, Ill., Peter Chartier of Camarillo,  Calif., Eric Chartier of Monroe, Conn., Albert Bremser of Oakton, Va., and Michael Bremser of California; and seven great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, from the First Congregational Church, Sidney, N.Y. with the Rev. Robert Pope officiating. Burial will be in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney, N.Y. at her family's convenience.

Memorial gifts may be made to the First Congregational Church, Sidney, N.Y., or to the Sidney Emergency Squad, River Street, Sidney, N.Y. 13838.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Wayne L. Anderson

BAINBRIDGE — Wayne L. Anderson, 58, of Bainbridge, formerly of Delhi, died unexpectedly Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at The Hospital, Sidney.

The son of the late Milton and Alice (Holling) Anderson, he was born June 1, 1943, in Brainerd, Minn., where he graduated from high school, and he received an associate's degree from the State University of Minnesota at Anoka.

He later moved to Arizona, where he married Debra F. Kathmann in Tempe on April 25, 1981, coming to Delhi that year where he subsequently received an associate's degree in drafting from the State University College of Technology at Delhi.

A machinist by trade, he was employed by the Raymond Corp. in Greene and had been a Bainbridge resident since 1984, where he did extensive volunteer work and took great pride in the General Clinton Park.

Surviving are his wife, Debbie Anderson; three daughters, Wendy (Donald) Finch of Franklin; Denita and Cristal Anderson of Bainbridge; a son, Andy, of Appleton, Minn.; five grandchildren; a sister, Lois (Donald) Britt of Salem, Ark.; and his parents-in-law, Henry and Charlotte Kathmann of Delhi.

Friends are invited to call on Sunday evening at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where the family will be in attendance 7 to 9 p.m., and funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 24, by the Rev. John Priest at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Delhi, where Wayne was an active member.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bainbridge Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet and Son, Delhi.

Donald B. Scofield

WALTON — A memorial service for Donald B. Scofield, 64, of Walton, who passed away Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, N.Y., will be held from his home on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at 1 p.m.

The family will be at home for friends to call from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The Rev. David Galje will officiate.

Born in Walton on June 18, 1937, Donald was the son of Earl and Leona (Engert) Scofield.

He had been a resident of this community his entire life.

Donald was married to Myra Higley on Sept. 15, 1956, at Trout Creek. She survives at home.

He was an electrician at Bendix-Amphenol Corp. in Sidney, retiring after 39 years. He was a member of I.A.M. Local 1529 of Sidney and had been a Cub Scout leader in Trout Creek.

In addition to his wife, Myra, he is survived by four sons, Donald B. Scofield Jr. and his wife, Cathy, of Walton, Timothy J. Scofield and his wife, Joann, of Sidney Center, Carl E. Scofield of Sidney Center and Raymond C. Scofield and special friend, Penny, of Bloomville; one daughter, Rhonda Stanton, and her husband, David, of Walton; also a sister, Doris Brink, and husband, Hubert, of Prttville, Ala.; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Scofield, of Ulster Heights, N.Y.; 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Robert, George and Paul.

Anyone wishing to do so may make memorial contributions to the Foothills District Boy Scouts or the Indian Hills Council Girl Scouts.

Kathleen A. Ludde

MARGARETVILLE — Kathleen A. Ludde, 63, of Margaretville, N.Y., died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, N.Y.

She was born Aug. 4, 1938, in Queens, N.Y., the daughter of John and Mary (O'Neil) MacBain.

She married Edmund Ludde on Aug. 16, 1952, in Queens, N.Y.

Kathleen worked as a bookkeeper for her husband with his business in New York City, moving to the Margaretville area in 1991 from Queens.

She is survived by her husband, Edmund Ludde of Margaretville; one son, Edmund John Ludde of Long Island; a daughter, Debra Ann Chalmers of North Carolina; and four grandchildren, Kieron, Rory, Keri and Ryan Ludde.

A funeral Mass is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Margaretville with the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell, celebrant.

Committal services will be private.

Calling hours are Saturday and Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

The family will appreciate flowers or donations in memory of Kathleen Ludde to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Joan K. Murphy

WASILLA, Alaska — Joan Kunkel Murphy died Sept. 6, 2001, in Albany, N.Y.

A private memorial service at the request of her sisters, Maureen Kunkel Basquin and Jacqueline Kunkel Gustafson, formerly of Oneonta, and brother-in-law, Allan Gustafson, was held at the Sacred Heart Church, Wasilla, Alaska, on Sept. 11, 2001. The Rev. Kasper Mallavaeapu, OFM, was the celebrant.

May she rest in peace.

Jesse James Kane

BAINBRIDGE — Jesse James Kane, 19, of Bainbridge, went to heaven at 12:25 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, after a courageous battle with Hodgkin's disease and complications at Wilson Memorial Hospital.

He is predeceased by his maternal grandfather, James L. Quick; one uncle, Michael Lutonsky; and his paternal grandparents, Jesse J. Kane and Edith E. Kane.

He is survived by his loving parents, John and Jay Kane of Bainbridge; three stepbrothers, Eric and Lena of Arizona, Aaron and Sarah of North Carolina and Jason of Endicott; a niece and nephew, Kassidy and Kileigh; his aunts and uncles, Duane of Afton, Delmar of Florida, Cliff and Sharon of Afton, Ruby and Keith Williamson of Greene, Jim and Kim Quick of Staatsburg; his cousins, Kevin and Jamie; one great-aunt, Thersa Lutonsky of Binghamton; and many other aunts and uncles and cousins.

Jesse is also survived by many friends, including Brandy, Bridgett, Jenn, Traci, Rob, Jon and Adam, who were very special to him.

Jesse graduated in 2000 from Afton Central School, where he played varsity basketball. He also played for AAU/Oneonta Boys and Girls Club. He attended yje State University College at Cortland and Broome County Community College.

He had a great love of hunting and fishing.

A memorial service to celebrate Jesse's life will be held on Oct. 2, 2001, at 7 p.m. at the Afton United Methodist Church, Spring Street, Afton, with the Rev. Tony Hipes officiating.

The family asks that those who wish make memorial contributions in Jesse's name to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Central New York Chapter, Learburry Center, 401 N. Salina St., Syracuse, N.Y. 13203-1770.

Alice R. Arnold

UNADILLA — Alice R. Arnold, 90, of Unadilla, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, at Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich.

She was born April 7, 1911, in Brooklyn, the daughter of the late Elisha K. and Lucille Hazelton Ramee.

On June 26, 1936, she married Rudolph Arnold in Mineola, where they resided until moving to Sidney in 1968. He predeceased her on April 7, 1982.

She was a graduate of the Hempstead High School and Jamaica Training. Alice received her bachelor's and master's degrees in elementary education at Hofstra University in Hempstead.

She retired as principal of the Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School in Roosevelt in May 1966, after a career of more than 30 years.

She was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Unadilla and was a former member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Sidney. She was also active in the Sidney Senior Citizens Club, Sidney Chapter #255 O.E.S. and the New York State Retired Teachers Association.

She is survived by her two daughters, Jane Foley of Unadilla and Judith Miller of Swan Lake; and a sister, Hazel Campbell of Sidney. Also surviving are five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; a nephew and several nieces.

A sister, Mabel Bashforth, and a brother, Allan Ramee, predeceased her.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Joel Grigg, rector of her church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney. Friends may call at their convenience Tuesday at the funeral chapel with her family in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m. Eastern Star services will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel.

Memorial gifts may be directed to the local chapter of the American Red Cross to aid the victims of the attack on Sept. 11, 2001.

Mary Kenney

SCHODACK — Mary Zuchero Kenney, 67, of Clearview Blvd., died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at the Community Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, after a long illness.

Born in Albany, she is the daughter of Jennie Zuchero and the late Dominick Zuchero.

Mrs. Kenney had been a Schodack resident since 1964.

She was employed by Hoffman and Silverman Optometrist in East Greenbush for many years as an office manager.

She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Castleton.

Survivors include her mother, Jennie Zuchero of Colonie; her husband, James Kenney of Schodack; two sons, Stephen Kenney of North Syracuse, and Thomas M. Kenney of Schenectady; two daughters, Patricia M. Kenney of Schenectady and Nancy E. (Gerrit) Bakhuizen of Morris; a brother, Thomas Zuchero of Scotia; grandchildren, Michele Kenney, Katherine Bakhuizen and Jenna Bakhuizen; and a nephew, Michael Schott.

She was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Schott.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Ray Funeral Home, 59 Seaman Ave., Castleton, and at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 3 Catholic Way, Castleton, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home today from 4 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the March of Dimes, 80 Wolf Road, Albany, N.Y. 12205.

Leo McKenny

MOUNT VISION — A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at 11 a.m. for Leo McKenny Sr. of Mount Vision, who passed away Aug. 29, 2001, at Our Lady of the Magnificat Chapel, located on Miller Road, Kinnelon, N.J. Services will be conducted by Msgr. John R. Ryan.

Janette Sturrock

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Janette (Jeanne) Special Sturrock of Melbourne, Fla., passed away Sept. 19, 2001, at the Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne.

She was the daughter of Maurice and Margaret Peake of Franklin, N.Y.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Sturrock, and son, Jeffery Special.

She is survived by her two daughters, Judy Bloomer of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Michelle Special of West Melbourne, Fla.; a son, Micheal Special of Melbourne; four granddaughters and two grandsons; a brother, Jacob Peake of Franklin; her sisters, Carolyn Jordan of Unadilla, N.Y., and Elizabeth Neish of Sidney Center, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

She will be missed so much.

Christopher  White

GAINESVILLE, Va. — Christopher Todd  White, 17, of Gainesville, Va., died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at Prince William Hospital in Manassas, Va., from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

He was born on Aug. 28, 1984, in Fairfax, Va., a son of Dr. Michael W. and Cynthia (Kukenberger)  White.

A lifelong resident of Virginia, Chris was a senior at Stonewall  Jackson High School in Manassas, Va., where he was an honor roll student and captain of the golf team.

An avid horseman and car enthusiast, he was also a member of the Evergreen Country Club.

No one who met Chris walked away without a lasting impression.

Chris is survived by his mother, Cynthia Kukenberger  White and her companion, Robert S. Kolka, of Gainesville, Va.; his father, Michael W.  White, Ph.D., and his wife, Sandra Wood of Virginia; his maternal grandparents, Mary and Frank Kukenberger of Cooperstown, N.Y.; his paternal grandmother, Marlys  White of Marshalltown, Iowa; one brother, Matthew M.  White of Gainesville, Va.; two sisters, Michelle W. Bricker and Jamie J.  White, both of Gainesville; two stepbrothers, Joseph R. Kolka and Robert P. Kolka, both of Milford, N.Y.; and one stepsister, Shannon D. Kolka of Los Angeles,  Calif.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Index.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Friday evening, Sept. 28, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. when Chris' family will be in attendance.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Stonewall  Jackson Athletic Boosters for the Chris T.  White Golf Scholarship, 8820 Rixlew Lane, Manassas, VA 20109.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
