Jesse James Kane

BAINBRIDGE — Jesse James Kane, 19, of Bainbridge, went to heaven at 12:25 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, after a courageous battle with Hodgkin's disease and complications at Wilson Memorial Hospital.

He is predeceased by his maternal grandfather, James L. Quick; one uncle, Michael Lutonsky; and his paternal grandparents, Jesse J. Kane and Edith E. Kane.

He is survived by his loving parents, John and Jay Kane of Bainbridge; three stepbrothers, Eric and Lena of Arizona, Aaron and Sarah of North Carolina and Jason of Endicott; maternal grandmother, Johanna Quick of Binghamton; a niece and nephew, Kassidy and Kileigh; his aunts and uncles, Duane of Afton, Delmar of Florida, Cliff and Sharon of Afton, Ruby and Keith Williamson of Greene, Jim and Kim Quick of Staatsburg; his cousins, Kevin and Jamie; one great-aunt, Thersa Lutonsky of Binghamton; and many other aunts and uncles and cousins.

Jesse is also survived by many friends, including Brandy, Bridgett, Jenn, Traci, Rob, Jon and Adam, who were very special to him.

Jesse graduated in 2000 from Afton Central School, where he played varsity basketball. He also played for AAU/Oneonta Boys and Girls Club. He attended the State University College at Cortland and Broome County Community College.

He had a great love of hunting and fishing.

A memorial service to celebrate Jesse's life will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, at the Afton United Methodist Church, Spring Street, Afton, with the Rev. Tony Hipes officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those who wish make memorial contributions in Jesse's name to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Central New York Chapter, Learburry Center, 401 N. Salina St., Syracuse, N.Y. 13203-1770.

Josephina Pijnenburg

LAGRANGE, Ga. — Mrs. Josephina Henrika VanLoon Pijnenburg, 97, formerly of 14 Walnut St., Cooperstown, N.Y., passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, at the Florence Hand Nursing Home in LaGrange, Ga.

She was born on Feb. 14, 1904, in Berlicum, Holland.

She married Alfons Pijnenburg on May 23, 1930, in Tilburg, Holland.

Josephina immigrated to the United States on Jan. 22, 1952, and, with her eight children, made her home in Cooperstown.

She greatly enjoyed needlepoint; however, her true love was gardening. Spending many hours tending to her yard, she will always be remembered for the beautiful roses and tulips and many other flowers and plants she raised until moving away from Cooperstown in 1987.

While she was living in Cooperstown, Josephina was an active member of St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, as well as the Double X Club.

She was currently a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in LaGrange, Ga.

Josephina is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Maria and Charles A. Dimick of Cooperstown, Elssie and Jack Tipsword of LaGrange, Ga., Johanna and Peter Rotter of Canastota, N.Y., and Anna and Jim Rasmuson of Balston Spa, N.Y.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Wilhelmus ("Willy") and Eileen Pijnenburg of Cooperstown, and Alfons and Edna Pijnenburg of Hogansville, Ga.; one daughter-in-law, Willy Fae Pijnenburg of LaGrange, Ga.; 21 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Maria Van Grinsven; and one brother, Martien VanLoon, both of Holland; and several nieces and nephews in Holland and Canada.

She was predeceased by her husband, Alfons Pijnenburg; and two sons, Andreas and Hubertus Pijnenburg.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John P. Rosson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. John R. Sise, pastor emeritus. Burial will follow in the Pijnenburg family plot in St. Mary's Cemetery, Index.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 2, 2001, after 1 p.m. when Josephina's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Double X Club, care of Jane Homburger, 115 Phoenix Mills Road, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326. This is an organization that donates the money it raises to area charities during the Christmas season. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Robert Constable

SIDNEY — Robert V. Constable, 78, of Union Street, Sidney, and formerly of Sidney Center, passed away Friday evening, Sept. 28, 2001, at the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford.

He was born Feb. 15, 1923, in Walton, the son of the late Andrew and Blanche Van Akin Constable.

Bob was first married to M. Alliene Hoy in December 1946. She predeceased him on May 3, 1979. On Aug. 9, 1986, he married Margaret Steigleman in Sidney.

Robert was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving his country during World War II.

For several years he was employed at the Amphenol Corp. in Sidney until his retirement in 1983.

He was a member of the Sidney Center United Methodist Church, Loyal Order of the Moose #277, Sidney, Sidney Lodge #2175 BPOE, Charles L. Jacobi Post #183 American Legion, Sidney, Corp. R.H. Arrandale Post 7914 VFW and the I.A.W. & A.W. Local 1529 Sidney. He was a life member of the Sidney Center Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Constable, Sidney; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald and Nancy Constable, Bainbridge, and Terry and Cindy Constable, Sidney Center; three daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Roger Benedict, Walton, Robin and Joe Gossoo, Sidney Center, and Roxanne and James Knight, Otego; two stepsons and daughter-in-law, Gary and Linda Scott, Sidney, and Thomas Scott, Hollywood,  Calif.; three sisters, Iris Elderkin, Walton, Dorothy Tweedie, Walton, and Blanche Michael, Hernando, Fla. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Kip Stratton, pastor of the Sidney Center United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Cemetery, Sidney Center. Friends are invited to call at their convenience today at the funeral chapel with his family in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. The Sidney Center Fire Department will conduct memorial services at 8 p.m.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Sidney Center Fire Department or to the Sidney Emergency Squad if desired.

Marion Merante

WALTON — Marion Etta Hall Merante of Walton died on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at Roscoe Community Nursing home. She was 82.

She was born Jan. 29, 1919, in Richmondville to Dr. Ralph M. and Nellie M. Fox Hall.

Mrs. Merante was the director of nursing personnel at the East Point Nursing Home in Cold Spring until her retirement. Previously she worked at the Park Medical Center in Beacon, and was a nurse and office manager for her father, Dr. Ralph Hall, in Cold Spring.

She received her bachelor's degree in home economics from Syracuse University in 1941, and her master's from Yale School of Nursing in 1944.

On Oct. 22, 1955, she married Sylvester P. Merante in Cold Spring.

Mrs. Merante lived in Walton for the past 10 years. Previously she lived in Fishkill for five years and in Cold Spring for 60 years.

She was a member of the Cold Spring United Methodist Church, where she was a board member and church treasurer for 25 years, and Walton United Methodist Church; the Order of the Eastern Star, Phillipstown Lodge, where she was a matron and officer; the New York Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Phillipstown Community Council, where she was its treasurer. She was also a Red Cross volunteer.

Following a debilitating stroke, Marion knitted numerous afghans for community organizations and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Sylvester, of Walton; her son, the Rev. Ralph A. Merante; a daughter-in-law, Carol Merante; and grandsons, Caleb and Joshua, all of Shokan.

A service will be at 11 a.m. today at Ashokan United Methodist Church, Shokan. Interment will be in the Cold Spring Cemetery, Cold Spring.

Howard W. Oldick

MOHAWK — Howard W. Oldick, 84, formerly of 17 N. Otsego St., Mohawk, passed away Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at Heritage Heathcare in Utica.

Survivors include his twin brother, George Oldick of Albany; one sister-in-law, Edna Oldick of Richfield Springs; one niece, Diana and her husband, Ken Buell of Burlington Flats; three nephews, Donald Oldick and his wife, Nancy, of Richfield Springs, Charles Oldick and his wife, Dale, of Little Falls and Steve Oldick and his wife, Linda of Springfield; and several cousins.

He was predeceased by his sister, Viola M. Tufts in 1997; and his brother, Harold Oldick in 1993.

Mr. Oldick's funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at the Graves-Applegate-Day Funeral Home, 48 E. Main St., Mohawk. Family and friends are invited to visit Tuesday morning from 10 to 11 prior to the funeral service at the Graves-Applegate-Day Funeral Home, Mohawk.

Ralph Jungermann

BAINBRIDGE — Ralph E. Jungermann of Bainbridge died on Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, at 10 a.m. at his residence.

He was born on May 28, 1939, in Weehawken, N.J., the son of George and Doretta (Reis) Jungermann.

He was a graduate of Seton Hall University.

He married Patricia Dougherty at St. Augustin Catholic Church in Union City, N.J., on Dec. 30, 1961.

He was the cemetery director at Modonna Cemetery in Fort Lee, N.J., until retiring.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia, of Bainbridge; his children, Christopher and Marie Jungermann of Knoxville, Tenn., Dian Jungermann of Paulsboro, N.J., Jennifer and Raymond Newbauer of Bainbridge, Timothy and Patrice Jungermann of Teaneck, N.J., Suzanne and Kevin Owens of Hasbrouck Heights, N.J., and Brendan and Janet Jungermann of  White Haven., Pa.; 10 grandchildren; three brothers, George Jungermann of Minnesota, Peter Jungermann of Dearborn, Mich., and Gerard Jungermann of Bainbridge; a sister, Eleanor Malia of Scarborough, Maine; and several nephews and nieces.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Dorothy Memorial Home, 58 West Main St., Bainbridge. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at the Dorothy Memorial Home, Bainbridge, and at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church on South Main Street in Bainbridge, with the Rev. Donald Bourgeois officiating at a Mass of Christian Burial.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Diabetes Association.

Arrangements were entrusted to Nick E. Ferrentelli & Arthur N.  Jones and the Dorothy Memorial Homes of Afton and Bainbridge.

Steven Stern

POUGHKEEPSIE — Steven Stern, 51, of Worrall Avenue, died suddenly Sept. 28, 2001, at his residence.

He was born June 30, 1950, in the Bronx, son of the late Albert and Mary Quinn Stern.

He had lived in Poughkeepsie for the past 10 years, having formerly resided in the Bronx.

He has been employed for more than 30 years by Metro North Railroad, currently serving as car inspector. He had been a union representative for Metro North Railroad for many years.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served from 1967 to 1970.

Surviving are his sisters, Ann Marie Stern of Arkville, Mary Sebald of Shandaken, Susan Fairbairn of Margaretville, Catherine Earl of Oneonta and Josephine Parsons of Olivebridge. Several nieces and nephews and his beloved pet, Augie, also survive.

A service to celebrate the life of Steven will be held on Tuesday at a time to be announced at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home, Main Street, Phoenicia. Burial will be in the Hudler Cemetery, Route 28, Mt. Tremper.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ulster County SPCA.

Henrietta Marshall

WORCESTER — Henrietta Marshall, 83, of Worcester, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Albany Medical Center.

She was born April 30, 1918, in Matapedia (Runnymede), Quebec, Canada, the daughter of Robert and Annie (Haley) Lodge.

She married Raymond R. Marshall on March 14, 1942.

Mrs. Marshall was a graduate of the McDonald College at the McGill University in Montreal, Canada. She was a school teacher for several years at the Waterloo Public School in Waterloo, Quebec, Canada.

Mr. and Mrs. Marshall moved to Worcester in 1972. They owned and operated the Marshall Food Market from 1972 to 1981.

Mrs. Marshall was a longtime member of the Worcester United Methodist Church and the Worcester Women's Society.

She is survived by a brother, Russell Lodge of British Columbia, Canada; two sisters, Lou Bowker of Scarborough, Ontario, Canada, and Joyce Lequin of Waterloo, Quebec, Canada; three children, Shirley and her husband, John Engler, of Worcester, Joyce and her husband, Richard Bohne, of Greenville and Raymond and his wife, Catherine Marshall, of Lindenhurst; seven grandchildren, Timothy Engler, Donna Wood, Steven Engler, Raymond Marshall Jr., Heidi Bohne, Lori Bohne and Jason Marshall; five great-grandchildren, Nicole and Kyle Wood and Steven II, Sarah and Heather Engler; a stepbrother, Dennis Marshall, and his family of Oshawa, Ontario, Canada; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1981; two brothers; and three sisters.

Calling hours will be held at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester, on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., with the family in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral service will be held 10 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at the Worcester United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jane Pykus, pastor, officiating.

There will also be calling hours and a funeral service held at the Bessett & Files Inc. Funeral Home in Waterloo, Canada.

Burial will follow at the DuBoyce Cemetery in Knowlton, Quebec, Canada.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Marshall to the United Methodist Church, Main Street, Worcester, NY 12197.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Mary Butenhoff

RHINEBECK — Mary Butenhoff, 87, of Rhinebeck, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at the Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck.

In 1966, she and her husband moved to Rhinebeck from Gilbertsville, where they owned and operated a farm for many years. After moving to Rhinebeck, she worked at Kem Cards in Poughkeepsie for a number of years.

Mrs. Butenhoff was a member of the Third Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Women of the Evangelical Church in America and of the AARP in Rhinebeck. She was also a Lutheran Braille Worker at the church, printing the Bible in Braille.

Born in Mount Carmel, Pa., on Sept. 10, 1914, she was the daughter of Theodore and Pearl Kurey Legutko.

On Sept. 1, 1934, she married Karl W. "Charles" Butenhoff. Mr. Butenhoff died on Aug. 15, 1983.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Peter W. and Linda Butenhoff of Red Hook; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol Ann and Larry Anderson of St. Charles, Ill.; two brothers, Theodore Legutko of Elmwood Park, N.J., and Michael Legutko of Garfield, N.J.; three sisters, Mildred Peto of Clifton, N.J., Olga Kinz of Wayne, N.J., and Dorothy Barcelona of Mahwah, N.J.; four grandchildren, C.G. Butenhoff and Lisa Butenhoff of Red Hook, Lori Henkel of Naperville, Ill., and Eric Anderson of Peoria, Ariz.; four great-grandchildren, Kelly, Annelise and Ian Henke and Sean Anderson. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Third Evangelical Lutheran Church, at 31 Livingston St. in Rhinebeck. The Rev. Albert R. Ahlstrom will officiate. Interment will be in Rhinebeck Cemetery in Rhinebeck.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the  White Funeral Home, at 91 E. Market St. in Rhinebeck.

Memorial donations may be made in Mary's memory to Rhinebeck Rescue Squad, 76 E. Market St., Rhinebeck, NY 12572.

Jeanne I. Gorton

BAINBRIDGE — Jeanne I. Gorton, 72, of 18 Bixby St., Bainbridge, passed away peacefully Sunday afternoon, Sept. 30, 2001, at her residence.

She was born Feb. 26, 1929, in the town of Coventry, the daughter of the late Arthur J. and Eva Haight Ives.

Jeanne was a graduate of the Harpursville High School Class of 1946.

On June 10, 1951, she married Bruce I. Gorton in Nineveh.

From 1950 until her retirement in 1986, Mrs. Gorton was an inspection supervisor for the Amphenol Corp. in Sidney.

Jeanne was a member of several bowling leagues in the Tri-Towns area for several years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bainbridge.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Bruce I. Gorton of Bainbridge; three daughters and a son-in-law, Cynthia Callaghan of Sidney, Deborah Kimball of Bainbridge and Lisa and Jamie Page of Bainbridge; son, Edward I. Gorton of Woburn, Mass.; sister, Alice I. Barnhart of Sidney; brother and sister-in-law, Louis and Virginia Ives of Rochester; six grandchildren, Shawn and Jeremy Ostrander, Christopher Callaghan, Ben Kimball, Bryan Callaghan, Kate Kimball and Samantha Page; sister-in-law, Doris Cook of Sidney; brother-in law and sister-in-law, Lynn and Loretta Gorton of Unadilla; several nieces and nephews; and cousins.

Three brothers, Roger, Clayton and Richard Ives, predeceased her.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, at 21 Main St. in Sidney, with the Rev. Katherine Evans, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Bainbridge, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge. Friends are invited to call at the funeral chapel after 3 p.m. Tuesday and her family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815.

James P. Morrow

HIGHLAND FALLS — James P. Morrow, 69, of 208 Seitz Drive, formerly of Highland Falls, passed away of natural causes Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at home.

He was born in Brooklyn, and he resided in Highland Falls for the past 10 years.

He was a splicer for the New York Telephone Co. for 25 years; he retired in 1978.

He was a member of the Holy Family Church, at 119 Chapel Drive in Fairmount, a member of Ancient Order of Hibernians, Veteran of Foreign Wars in Highland Falls and a member of the American Legion in Highland Falls.

He was in the United States Marine Corps, serving in the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife, Edith (Scott); three daughters, Lois Favre of Highland Falls, JoAnne Hedrick of Antioch,  Calif., and Beth Wood of Camillus; one son, Scott Morrow of Bainbridge; four sisters, Nancy Regan of Long Island, Betty Schmucker of Montclair, N.J., Joan Lauer of Long Island and Katie Manning of Brooklyn; one brother, Robert Morrow of Long Island; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Whelan Bros. Funeral Home, at 3700 West Genesee St. in Syracuse.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at 9:30 a.m. at the Whelan Bros. Funeral Home, at 3700 West Genesee St. in Syracuse. Church services will be held Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at 10 a.m. at the Holy Family Church, at 119 Chapel Drive in Syracuse.

Burial will be Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at the Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, at 4069 Howlett Hill Road in Syracuse.

Contributions may be made in memory of James P. Morrow to the Veterans Hospital Voluntary Services.
