Eugene Doroski

FORT EDWARD — Eugene (Gene) Doroski, 60, of State Street, passed away Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at the Glens Falls Hospital.

Born March 12, 1941, in Hobart, he was the son of Stephen Doroski and the late Blanche (Marschilock) Doroski.

Gene retired from Kamyr, where he was an engineer.

He enjoyed fishing, golfing and taking vacations.

Gene was a family man and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Besides his mother, a sister, Helen Briggs; and a brother, Francis Doroski, predeceased him.

Survivors include his father, Stephen Doroski of Hobart; his wife, Patricia (Brockway) Doroski of Fort Edward; a daughter, Dawn Horstmyer of Queensbury; two sons, Glen Doroski and his wife, Cheryl, of Hudson Falls and Clifford Doroski Sr. and his wife, Tracee, of Hudson Falls; seven grandchildren, Heather and Adam Gannon of Hudson Falls, Clifford Doroski Jr. of Hudson Falls, Steven and Dyna Horstmyer of Queensbury, Cheyenne and Dallas Doroski of Hudson Falls; a sister, Marge Moore of Davenport; a brother, John Doroski of Davenport; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, at the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, at 82 Broadway in Fort Edward.

At the family's request, there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Gene's memory to Fort Edward Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 226, Fort Edward, NY 12828.

Louise E. VanWie

DELHI — Louise E. VanWie, 96, a longtime Delhi resident, died Monday morning, Oct. 1, 2001, at home.

The daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Maus) Schneider, she was born April 26, 1905, in Roscoe, moving to Delhi at the age of 13, where she was a graduate of Delaware Academy and married Charles A. VanWie on July 29, 1922. He died March 16, 1986.

A homemaker all of her life, Louise was a member of the United Ministry of Delhi and Past Noble Grand of Delaware Rebekah Lodge No. 318.

Surviving are six children, Dorothy Gregory of Bloomville, Charles VanWie Jr. of Painted Post, Leo VanWie of Temple,  Texas, Harold VanWie of Aransas,  Texas, Joyce Brush of Schenectady and Debra Wright of Delhi; 16 grandchildren; and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Raymond VanWie.

Friends are invited to call today (Tuesday) at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home in Delhi.

Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. David Wheatley at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, at the Delhi Alliance Fellowship, with burial following in the Woodland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family will appreciate contributions to Delhi Fire Department EMS or Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements entrusted to Robert A. Peet and Son of Delhi.

Kenneth A. Merwin

HARPERSFIELD — Kenneth A. Merwin Sr., of Harpersfield, died at home on Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Merwin was born in  Jefferson on Jan. 6, 1922.

He was a resident of Harpersfield for 31 years, living with his loving companion of 43 years, Bonnie V. Hamm (Merwin).

Kenneth was known as everybody's "Pa." Pa was a logger and enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching Westerns. Pa was also known as a sharp-shooter in pool.

In addition to Bonnie, Kenneth is also survived by five sons, William and Clarabell Merwin of Delhi, Jerry and Dorothy Tooley of Davenport, Kent and Dorci Merwin of Davenport, Jeff Merwin and Kelly Gardepe of Davenport and Glen Merwin of Harpersfield; five daughters, Shirley and Walt Cole of Summit, Candy and Bruce VanDuser of Harpersfield, Tammy and Robert Zimmerman of Davenport, Connie Merwin and Todd Duke of South Kortright and Donna Merwin of Harpersfield; one stepdaughter, Sue Sutherland and Butch of Oneonta; one brother, Irv Merwin of  Jefferson; and one sister, Eliza Bonney of Schenectady. Also surviving are 26 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Kenneth was predeceased by a son, Kenneth Merwin Jr.; and two daughters, Patsy Brockway and Penny Merwin.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, at 40 Main St. in Stamford, on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, between 7 and 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Waylen Bray officiating. Interment will follow at the Harpersfield Center Rural Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Wayne R. Bunn

LEONARDSVILLE — Wayne R. Bunn, 44, surrounded by his family, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at St. Luke's Hospital in New Hartford.

He was born Sept. 18, 1957, in Oneonta, the son of Richard and Luva (Washburn) Bunn.

He married Maureen K. Hammond on July 29, 1977.

Wayne was employed by Vineall Ambulance Inc. of Oneida, where he served faithfully as a paramedic.

He was a loyal volunteer for the West Winfield Fire Department and Ambulance and the Bridgewater Emergency Squad.

He loved his family, but his greatest love was being Grampy to Ethan.

He is survived by his wife and friend, Maureen; his daughter, Cheryl Bunn, her boyfriend, Mark, and their son, Ethan Alexander Bunn; his daughter, Carrie Bunn and her boyfriend, Scott; his in-laws, Joseph and Marylee Hammond; several brother- and sister in-laws; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; the Vineall Ambulance crew; and Dale and Bill DeKing.

Wayne was predeceased by his mother, Luva, on July 31, 1982; his father, Richard, on July 6, 1995; and his sister, Deborah Stocking, on Oct. 3, 1998.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home in Edmeston, with the Rev. Wallace Brown officiating. A luncheon will be held at the Bridgewater Fire Department after the service.

Calling hours are Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, from 6 to 9 p.m. with a fire department service to be held at 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Wayne's memory to either the Bridgewater or West Winfield Ambulance Fund, or the American Kidney Foundation.

John X. McConkey

MINERSVILLE, Pa. — Dr. John X. McConkey, 76, formerly of Oswego, N.Y., died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, in Minersville, Pa.

He was born in Oswego, the son of the late Joseph and Emma Schneider McConkey.

He attended Rochester schools, received his bachelor of education from the State University College at Oswego, dual master's in education and history from the Maxwell School of Syracuse University and a doctorate in history at Syracuse.

He was vice president of Dowling College in Oakdale, Long Island, N.Y., from 1969 to 1978; and president of Lackawanna Junior College in Scranton from 1979 to 1985.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II and Korea; he was a fourth-degree Knight of Columbus, a member of Rotary and the New York State Retired Teachers Association.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Patricia Doyle, in 1991; and two brothers, Joseph and James McConkey.

He is survived by two daughters, Sharon McConkey of Minersville, Pa., and Elizabeth McConkey of South New Berlin, N.Y.; a brother, Robert of Rochester, N.Y.; two grandchildren, John and Jessica Schumann of Minersville; a great-granddaughter, Linda Johns of Minersville; and nieces and nephews.

Viewing at Dutcavich Funeral Home in Minersville, Pa., will be Wednesday, from 6 to 9 p.m. and Thursday, from 6 to 9 a.m.

Mass will be at 10 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Church in Minersville. Further services will be Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at noon from St. Mary Church in Oswego, and interment will be in St. Peter Cemetery in Oswego.

Russell C.  White

SOUTH NEW BERLIN — Russell C.  White, 73, of South New Berlin, passed away Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, in South New Berlin.

He was born June 9, 1928, in Norwich, the son of Ralph and Catherine (Chapin)  White.

He married Ruth Elaine (Ganoung)  White on Nov. 28, 1953, in Mt. Rose, Pa. She predeceased him June 17, 1985.

He was a retired employee of DHIA.

Russell will be missed by his friends and especially by all of his loved ones.

He is survived by two daughters, Susan and Jerry Burgess of Barstow, Fla., and Cindy Holbert of Edmeston; one son, David and Kelly  White of Pineville, La.; six grandchildren, Russell Burgess of Bloomington, Ill., Jason Burgess of Alpharetta, Ga., Erin and Nathan Holbert of Edmeston and Tucker and  Taylor  White of Pineville, La.; two great-grandchildren, Jerica Burgess of Bloomington, Ill., and Brooke Burgess of Alpharetta, Ga.; and one brother, Donald  White of South New Berlin.

Calling hours will be Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at 10 a.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin with the Rev. Romeyn Kipp of the Holmesville Baptist Church in New Berlin, officiating.

Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in South New Berlin.

Frances McMullen

BLOOMVILLE — Frances E. McMullen, 34, of Bloomville, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born June 14, 1967, in Stamford, the daughter of Shirley Whispell.

Her husband, Terry McMullen, who she married Aug. 20, 1993, survives, as do a daughter, Tara Ann McMullen; and son, Michael McMullen, at home. Her mother, Shirley of Hobart; an uncle, Clarence Whispell of Hobart; uncle and aunt, Cliff and Betty Mott of Hobart; aunt, Helen Havrish of  Jefferson; her mother- and father-in-law, Georgieanna and Francis McMullen of Hobart; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; and lots of loving friends survive.

Frances worked in housekeeping at the Holiday Inn in Oneonta for two years; at Graham Labs for five years; and in the packaging department at Tyco Healthcare Mallinckrodt of Hobart for six months.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Hobart, with the Rev. Richard Elder officiating. Burial will be in Locust Hill Cemetery in Hobart.

There will be no calling hours.

A trust fund is being established for Tara and Michael through NBT of Hobart in care of Mrs. Evelyn Goodspeed, P.O. Box H, Hobart, NY 13788.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Hobart.

Joann K. Stull

GERMANTOWN, Md. — Joann K. Stull (nee Kresge) passed away on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001.

She was the beloved wife of the late Charles Thomas Stull.

She was a dear mother of Stephen Charles Gray and Christian Boyd Gray. She was a devoted sister of Charles B. Kresge, Carol J. Eisenberg and Jared L. Kresge. She also is survived by three grandchildren.

Donations may be made to the ALS Association of Rockville, Md.

Services were held Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at Grace Methodist Church on 119 Frederick Ave. in Gaithersburg, Md., at 2 p.m.

Helen Louise Ashe

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Helen Louise (Hawelka) Ashe, 86, died Sept. 29, 2001, at home in Melbourne, Fla.

She was born May 26, 1915, in Auburn, N.Y.

She received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Rochester and was a registered nurse.

Helen met her husband, Arthur J. Ashe, of Unadilla, N.Y., while in college, and they were married in 1936. Mr. Ashe was a mechanical engineer for Westinghouse Corp. and predeceased her.

Helen resided in West Nyack, N.Y., for many years while her husband was employed in New York City.

She was a homemaker, was employed as a nurse and did survey work in early Leukemia research.

Helen was an active member of AAUW as well as many other civic organizations. She was active in centralization which led to founding the Clarkstown School District and involved in the planning and founding of Rockland Community College.

In 1973, the Ashes retired and moved to Melbourne, Fla.

Helen continued her activities with AAUW and did volunteer work reading for the blind. She was also an accomplished watercolor artist.

Helen is survived by two sons, Arthur J. Ashe III, a professor at the University of Michigan, and Bill Ashe of Unadilla, N.Y., a New York City photographer; two grandsons, Chris Ashe of Ann Arbor and Arthur J. Ashe IV, a doctor in Palo Alto,  Calif. She has one great-grandchild, Aidan Ashe of Palo Alto.

A third son, Frederick predeceased her in 1971. Frederick served in Vietnam, was awarded the Bronze Star and was a senior at Cornell University at the time of his death.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Donations can be made to the Frederick G. Ashe Memorial Scholarship Fund at Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.

Arrangements are entrusted to Brownlie Maxwell in Melbourne, Fla.

John Aaron Burks

VANHORNESVILLE — John Aaron Burks Sr., age 52, formerly of 2406 State Highway #80, VanHornesville, was called home to the Lord from the Cleveland Clinic, on Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, with his devoted wife, Karen and daughter, Jana at his side, after a courageous battle with end-stage heart and kidney disease.

He was born on April 2, 1949, in Belglade, Fla., to John Will and Lois Iona Boykins Burks. When he was 2 weeks old, the family moved to Jordanville. John remained a lifelong resident of Herkimer County.

He attended the VanHornesville School and graduated from Herkimer High School in 1967.

John embraced the entrepreneurial spirit of the American dream and spent most of his life self-employed, starting many businesses: J.A. Burks Packing Co., Burks' Associates, JKA Sales Inc., AJK International Inc., Burks' Sportswear, UIC International Inc., United Credit Association Inc., Arab-American Business Funding Corp., International Proposal Services Inc., Aaron Consulting, Burks' Firewood, Coordinated Properties Inc., National Legal Research and Document Center, Delta Partner Properties Inc., Independent Research Associates Inc. and Equity Press Inc.

Next to his family, however, the law was his passion and he spent 20 years as an independent paralegal, first starting with the National Legal Research and Document Center and then the Independent Research Associates.

John received his law degree from the Southland University. He sat for and passed the Professional Responsibility portion of the New York State Bar Exam in November 2000. Hospitalizations precluded him from sitting for the remainder of the New York State Bar Exam first in February 2001, and then in July 2001, as he had planned.

Always remaining hopeful and optimistic about the future, on Aug. 17, 2001, John married his best friend and love, the former Karen Kasold in the Heart Transplant Unit at Albany Medical Center, where he was awaiting heart and kidney transplants.

John is survived by his devoted wife, Karen; and daughter, Jana; seven children from his previous marriage to Grace Merrick; daughter, Dr. April Burks of Schenectady, daughter, Kim Burks of Rochester, son, John Burks Jr. of Tampa, Fla., son and daughter-in-law, Reginal Burks and his wife, Christine, of Germany, daughter, Faith Burks of Virginia Beach, Va., and daughter, Victoria Burks of VanHornesville; two stepchildren, Billy Cartier of Buffalo and Erica Cartier of Hadley; five grandchildren, James  Washington of VanHornesville, Lanaie and Lanair of Rochester, Devon Burks of Germany and Raekwon Willis Burks of Herkimer; and his mother-in-law, Janet Kasold, of Gansevoort.

He is furthered survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Iona and Johnny Jenkins, of Somerset, N.J., sister, Earledean Burks of Cleveland, Ohio, sister and brother-in-law, Maureen and Robert Coles, of the Bronx, brother and sister-in-law, Jerome and Pat Burks of Rochester sister, Mary Hales, of Buffalo; brother and sister-in-law, Evon and Teresa Burks, of Frederick, Md., brother and sister-in-law, Delmonte and Philman Burks of Alvarado,  Texas, brother and sister-in-law, Freeman and Blandine Burks of Rochester, brother and sister-in-law, Eral and Diane Burks of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, sister and brother-in-law, Lisa and George Burrows of Canada; brother and sister-in-law, Zack and Donna Burks, of Jordanville; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Michael and Brandy O'Neil Kasold of Abbington, Pa., sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Patrice and Kenneth Hicks, of Ganesvoort; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

John was predeceased by his parents, John and Lois; a sister, Elaine; two brothers, Oscar Neil and Willie Arthur; and his father-in-law, Raymond Kasold.

John enjoyed conversation, walks, bicycling, movies and family outings.

John would most like to be remembered for his faith in God and his love for his family. He was deeply loved and will be sorely missed but will be remembered always.

Funeral services will be on Saturday at 11 a.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. John Roos officiating.

Interment will follow in Highland Rural Cemetery, Jordanville. Calling hours on Friday 1 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Robert DuBois

PORT RICHEY, Fla. — Robert DuBois, 80, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at the Tandem Healthcare, Hudson, Fla.

He was born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. He moved to Port Richey 12 years ago from Falmouth, Mass.

He was a carpet salesman. He worked for Bresee's Department Store and Carpet Barn.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Marines.

He is survived by his wife, Norma; two daughters, Ann Louise Hupf of Clarksville, Tenn., and Ruby Jan Ohlson of Beaver Dam, Wis., and four grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are by Bell Funeral Home, Hudson, Fla.

FRANKLIN — A memorial service for Richard Downs will be on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Franklin United Methodist Church, Franklin.
