Thomas Duffy

ROCHESTER — Thomas William Duffy, 52, of Rochester, and formerly of Oneonta, passed away Sept. 11, 2001, in the World Trade Center disaster.

Tom was a man of many accomplishments. God blessed him with a love of life and the ability to enjoy it.

He was born in Utica in 1949. After graduating from Union College in 1971, with a degree in mechanical engineering, he married Cyndy Wayman. This would be the beginning of what would become a 30-year marriage that was blessed with two sons and the birth of a beautiful grandson last year.

Tom's creative vision, tenacity and integrity opened many doors to him in the business world of corporate risk management. Tom held several senior management positions with  Johnson and Higgins before their merger with Marsh & McLennan in 1997. Most recently Tom held the position of senior vice president and managing partner of the Northeast Energy Division, a division responsible for consulting with utility companies throughout the world.

Although Tom found his work to be rewarding and challenging, he was first and foremost a devoted family man committed to making time for his true love and passion — involvement with his sons.

If Tom wasn't coaching Jason or Ryan's sporting teams (which he usually was) such as T-ball, baseball, basketball, soccer, swimming or lacrosse he was the most enthusiastic and supportive parent on the sidelines from their preschool years on into college.

Tom grew up spending summers at the family summer home in the Adirondack Mountains. This would be the place that he returned to every year with his family — the one place he truly called home.

His love for the outdoors and enjoyment of sports included mountain biking, cross-country skiing and kayaking. Golf was another pleasure in Tom's life; he was always ready to "pick up" a game.

Tom thrived on the challenge and competition as well as the friendships that developed on the fairways and putting greens.

His faith in Jesus Christ deepened in recent years and was the anchor that he and Cyndy trusted in through the uncertainties of life.

Tom's love for his family and his little grandson, Dylan, loyalty to his friends and commitment to honesty in the workplace reflected a life lived with joy and appreciation for all that God abundantly provided each day.

On Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, the senseless attack of the World Trade Center took Tom suddenly from our lives and into God's hands. This great man, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, with his easy laugh and quiet wisdom, mixed with humor has enriched and strengthened our lives — we will miss him all of our days.
