Edna H. Cook

UNADILLA — A memorial service for Edna H. Cook, who passed away May 2, 2001, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at the Westcott Funeral Home in Unadilla, with the Rev. Kip Stratton, pastor of the Unadilla United Methodist Church, officiating.

Frederick West

MILFORD — Frederick Napier West, 81, of Milford, went to be with his Lord on Oct. 6, 2001.

He was born Nov. 10, 1919, the son of Fred and Alice (Taylor) West of Binghamton.

He married Virginia Lynch on Aug. 2, 1942, in Port Dickinson. She predeceased him on Jan. 8, 2000.

He was a graduate of Binghamton Central High School, Class of 1938, and of Syracuse University, Class of 1941, where he received his bachelor of arts degree. He did his graduate work at Syracuse University and the State University at Albany.

Following their marriage, Fred and Ginny moved to Milford where Fred became librarian and English teacher at Milford Central School. He later became guidance counselor, English teacher and vice principal. He taught in Milford for 33 years, retiring in 1975. His life was closely intertwined with hundreds of students, many of whom came back often to visit him.

He belonged to the following professional organizations: Milford Central School Teachers Association, New York State United Teachers, American Federation of Teachers and National Education Association.

He also was a past Rotary member and later received the first Rotary Community Service Award. He was a member of the Milford Fire Department for 50 plus years. He drove an ambulance as fireman driver for 25 years. Fred was involved with the construction of the community swimming pool and later worked there as a lifeguard. He was a member of the Milford Methodist Church, serving on the board of trustees for several years.

Fred and Ginny had three children, whom they loved more than life.

Those who survive him are Susan and James Reynolds of Oneonta, David and Christine West of Milford and Richard and Deborah West of Milford. Also surviving are five grandchildren, David Reynolds of Ithaca, Michael Reynolds of Raritan, N.J., Jody Woodrow of Milford, David West Jr. of Oneonta and Damon West of Oneonta. He is survived by two great-grandchildren, Madison  Taylor Martin of Milford and Ryan Michael Reynolds of Raritan, N.J.

Fred was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be missed by all who survive him.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, in the Milford Methodist Church at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Robert Kazinski, pastor, officiating. Anyone who would like to share memories is encouraged to do so at this service. The family will greet relatives and friends at a luncheon in the church dining hall following the service.

Those who wish may contribute to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, the Milford Fire Department or the Milford Emergency Squad, Milford, NY 13807.

Funeral arrangements are by Tillapaugh Funeral Service of Cooperstown and Milford.

Frank A. D'Orta

GRAND GORGE — Frank Andrew D'Orta II, 37, Route 23, Grand Gorge, passed away Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 10, 1964, in Massapequa, the son of Frank A. D'Orta Sr. and Judie Johnston.

He was single. He was a lifelong area resident.

He was self-employed in auto repairs, restoring and painting automobiles. Frank was fond of designing and restoring autos and had a love for all motor racing.

He was the beloved son of Judie (D'Orta) Bravo and the late Frank A. D'Orta Sr. He was the brother of Wanda D'Orta, George D'Orta, Dedra D'Orta and Jacob Bravo. He was an uncle to Jessica, Jason and Rebecca Mudge, Christopher Locke, Ari D'Orta, Nicole Shavers, Danelle Shavers, Cheryl Prestigiacono. He was a great-uncle to Vivian LeMudge and Morgan Key. He was the grandson of Irene Hare.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at 6 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Committal services will be private.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Thursday from 5 p.m. until service time at 6 p.m.

Contributions may be made in memory of Frank A. D'Orta to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are by Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Frances Breitnitz

ONEONTA — Frances Breitnitz, 85, of Oneonta, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

She was born Aug. 3, 1916, in the Bronx, the daughter of Charles and Margaret (Reinaward) Lienau.

Frances had lived in Oneonta since 1984, having spent most of her life in the Bronx.

She was an artist and enjoyed painting.

Frances is survived by her sister, Mildred Rybacki of Richland, Mich.; several nieces and nephews, who include Christine Warunek of Richland, Mich., James Rybacki of the state of Maryland, Charles Lienau of Larchmont, Diane Miletti of Long Island, Raymond Lienau and Laura Lane, both of Yorktown Heights; and a sister-in-law, Laura Lienau of Yorktown Heights.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at the Sand Hill Cemetery, Wells Bridge, with the Rev. Jack Stennett, pastor of the Lutheran Church of the Atonement in Oneonta, officiating.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes of Oneonta and Otego.

Patricia Fitzgerald

DELHI — Patricia Ann Fitzgerald, 54, of Elk Creek Road, died at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi, on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001.

She was born in Brooklyn, March 13, 1947, the daughter of the late Fred and Loretta Dashnaw Fitzgerald.

She was employed as a home health provider.

Surviving are two sisters, Mary Fleckinger of Stone Ridge and Catherine Fitzgerald of High Falls; and nieces and nephews.

Two brothers, James and Dennis Fitzgerald, died previously.

Cremation will be in Wiltwyck Crematory, Kingston.

Private service and burial will be in Saint Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001.

Cremation and memorial arrangements are by the Joseph V. Leahy Funeral Home Inc., 27 Smith Ave., Kingston.

Donald C. Hulbert

LAURENS — Donald C. "Farmer" Hulbert, 78, of Laurens, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Aug. 31, 1923, in Otego, the son of Harry and Pearl Holbrook Hulbert.

He married the former Geraldine Timewell on June 29, 1941, in Auburn, who survives him.

Farmer had been a truck driver for the Otsego County Highway Department before his retirement.

A lifelong area resident he had been a life member of the Laurens American Legion Post 1688. He served as its commander at one time and had been active in all Legion activities.

He was a veteran of World War II, having received the Purple Heart serving in the United States Army.

He was an avid baseball fan and had managed the Laurens Town and American Legion teams during their time. Farmer was an all around outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting. He enjoyed decorating his home during the Christmas season and last year was awarded first place in the town of Laurens annual event.

Most of all Farmer was very proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Farmer is survived by his wife, Geraldine "Gerry" Hulbert of Laurens; his children, Sandra Faulkner (her late husband, James) of Fort Plain, Ceylon G. Hulbert, Charles and his wife, Brenda, Hulbert, Priscilla and her husband, Russell, Galbreth, Donald "Gary" and his wife, Pat, Hulbert, all of Laurens.

Farmer also raised Sandra VanDuesen of Oneonta and Kathy Dvoracek of  Pennsylvania. His survivors also include one brother and sister-in-law, Clifford and Letha Hulbert of West Oneonta; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren all special to "Poppa."

He was predeceased by a daughter, Paula Wikoff and her husband, Ronald Wikoff, of Oneonta; and a brother, Ralph Hulbert.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St. in Oneonta, with the Rev. Jack Stennett, pastor of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Laurens, officiating.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m., when the family will be present at the funeral home. Laurens American Legion Post 1688 will accord military honors at the Cook Cemetery, West Oneonta, following the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to either the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the Laurens American Legion Post 1688, Main Street, Laurens, NY 13796, in memory of Donald C. "Farmer" Hulbert.

The Hulbert family wishes to thank the Catskill Area Hospice for their loving care during "Farmer's" illness.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes of Oneonta and Otego.

Grace Presby

UNADILLA — Grace Suzanne Presby, 55, passed away peacefully on Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at her home on Church Street in Unadilla.

Susie was born on Jan. 29, 1946, in Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of Arthur and Ida Swartley.

She grew up in Chalfont, Pa., and graduated from Central Bucks High School in Doylestown, Pa., in 1963. She earned a bachelor of science in education from Millersville State College in  Pennsylvania in 1967. Twenty years later in 1987, she earned her master of science in education degree from Nazareth College in Rochester.

On July 27, 1968, she married Allen L. Presby in Chalfont, Pa., with whom she enjoyed 33 years in a loving, supportive relationship. They lived together and raised their family in Victor, where her husband served for 17 years as pastor of First Presbyterian Church. Susie was active in the life and ministry of the church, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school and serving on the board of deacons.

Susie taught in the secondary school system of the Diocese of Rochester, first at Our Lady of Lourdes and later at Siena Catholic Academy. She was a dedicated, conscientious teacher whose work was valued by her colleagues and students.

Susie enjoyed reading, quilting, bird-watching, flower gardening and walks with her friends. She and her husband were avid tent campers, hikers and back packers.

Surviving is her husband, the Rev. Allen L. Presby of Unadilla; a daughter, Aimee DeYoung with her husband, Mark, and grandson, Gabriel, of Decatur, Ill.; and a son, David Presby of Fairport; her mother, Ida Swartley, of Chalfont, Pa.; two brothers, Robert Swartley and his wife, Judy, of Malvern, Pa., and William Swartley and his wife, Kay, of Apex, N.C.; and a sister, Bonnie Martin and her husband, Bill, of Pittsford.

Calling hours will be held at the Westcott Funeral Home in Unadilla on Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Unadilla on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at 2 p.m.

Following the service and interment at Evergreen Hill Cemetery a time of fellowship will be held back at the church. The Rev. Willem Bodisco-Massink of Deposit and the Rev. Kip Stratton of Unadilla will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box Z, Unadilla, NY 13849, the United Presbyterian Church of East Guilford, P.O. Box 147, Sidney, NY 13838, and the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home of Unadilla.

Anthony Canino

VESTAL — Dr. Anthony Carmine Canino Sr., 73, of Vestal, died Monday evening, Oct. 8, 2001, at our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, with his wife and children by his side.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Virginia Canino of Vestal; his children, Dr. Anthony and Denise Canino of Vestal, Salvatore and Suzanne Canino of Seattle, Wash., Mary and Charles Gucciardo of Oneonta, Patrick and Eleanor Canino of Vestal, Janine and Thomas Fox of Otego; six grandchildren, Anthony III, Jennifer, Candice, Michael, Brittany and Cassandra; and a sister and brother-in-law, Theresa and Vincent Russo of Staten Island.

Dr. Canino was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church in Vestal; and he was a graduate of Downstate Medical Center in 1955. He completed his residency and internship at Brooklyn Hospital, Brooklyn.

He was director of emergency medicine at St. Vincent's Hospital on Staten Island for many years. He continued in emergency medicine at The Hospital in Sidney and at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta. In all Dr. Canino devoted more than 45 years to providing dedicated and professional service.

Funeral services will be held at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main St., Binghamton on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Church, where a funeral Mass will be offered.

Burial will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the McCormack Funeral Home on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy in memory of Dr. Canino may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Church, 165 Clifton Blvd., Vestal, NY 13850.

Barbara Boecke

ONEONTA — Barbara Ann Boecke, 22 years, of Oneonta, died suddenly Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born June 3, 1979, in Walton, the daughter of Charles and Lillian (Pierce) Boecke Sr.

Barbara Ann was a lifelong resident of Oneonta.

She is survived by her parents, Charles Boecke Sr. of Mohawk and Lillian Boecke of Oneonta; one sister, Theresa Boecke of Sidney; 11 brothers, Danny Boecke of Sidney, Kevin Boecke of Sidney, Charles and Tonia Boecke Jr. of Walton, Joe and Tina Boecke of Franklin, John Boecke of Oneonta, Henry and Connie Boecke of Oneonta, Raymond and Theodore Boecke of Schenevus, Steven Boecke of Franklin, Ronnie Boecke of Oneonta, Timmy Boecke of Oneonta, Donald Boecke of Oneonta and Jimmy Boecke of Florida; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. William D. Bouton, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Rita Johnston

PINEHURST, N.C. — Rita Rosine Barry Johnston, 89, died at her home in the Pinehurst area on Oct. 8, 2001.

She was predeceased by her husband, William Graham Johnston.

She was an avid golfer. She and her husband moved to Pinehurst in 1986 to enjoy the golfing amenities of the area.

She enjoyed traveling and was devoted to her family. The family had operated a dairy farm for many years in the Roxbury area.

Mrs. Johnston is survived by sons, David Barry Johnston of Pinehurst, N.C., Douglas Johnston of Cary, N.C., and Russell Johnston of Raleigh; and daughters, Joan Fruisen of Pinehurst and Beverly Hornak of Montrose, Pa.; 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. On Friday at 10 a.m., a prayer service will be held at the funeral home before the interment service at Roxbury Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First Health Hospice, P.O. Box 1956, Pinehurst, NC 28370.

Angie Loucks

STAMFORD — Angie Loucks, 81, died Oct. 4, 2001, at Bassett Hospital, Cobleskill.

She was a lifelong area resident.

She is survived by her brother, Clarence, of Hobart.

Friends may call Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Hall Funeral Home at 40 Main St. in Stamford.

Graveside services will follow at 10:30 a.m. at the Stamford Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home under the direction of William A. Tari.

Dorothy Diaz

TUCSON, Ariz. — Dorothy Crosby Diaz passed away Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, in Tucson, Ariz.

She was born Feb. 4, 1924. She was a graduate of Oneonta High School, Class of 1942. She was the first drum majorette and was one of Panny's Girls.

She married Michael Diaz in Tucson, Ariz. They worked for the Valley National Bank, Tucson. They retired from the bank and spent their retirement in Pinetop, Ariz.

She lived at the Desert Life Care Center, Tucson, Ariz., for five years.

She is survived by her husband, Michael Diaz of Pinetop, Ariz.; her son, Tim Conklin of Lynnfield, Mass.; her brother and his wife, Melvin R. and Alma Crosby of Oneonta, N.Y.; grandchildren, Jesse and Julie of Lynnfield, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

At the request of the family there are no services. Interment will be in the Diaz family plot in Tucson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
