Elaine Haynie

ONEONTA — Elaine Haynie died peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at the age of 87.

She was born in Altoona, Pa., on July 7, 1914, and married Louis F. Haynie in Miami, Fla., on Dec. 28, 1941.

They lived in Rockville Centre for 35 years, and then moved to Davenport and wintered in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Fla., until 1988. Louis, who was secretary-treasurer of Harper-Row Publishers, predeceased her on Jan. 22, 1994, also at the age of 87.

A multi-talented, sensitive woman, Elaine was an accomplished pianist, artist, seamstress, hostess, and interior designer. The passion of her life was sharing her love for the Lord Jesus Christ; and her most abiding accomplishment was seeing dozens of people come to know him, including everyone of her descendants and their spouses.

She is survived by her daughter and "son-in-love," Fran and Al Baldanza of East Meredith; her grandchildren, Elisabeth and Chad Baldanza, of East Meredith; a grandson, Daniel Baldanza of New Paltz; a granddaughter, Rebecca Baldanza Meston, her husband John, and their son Rendon, of Suffolk, Va.; a grandson, Adam Baldanza, of Ithaca; a grandson, Steve Baldanza, his wife Lori and their children, Matt and Erica, of Oneonta; and a brother, Richard C. Richards, and his family in California.

The funeral will be at the home of Al and Fran Baldanza on Dehning Road in East Meredith on Monday, Oct. 29, at 2:30 p.m.

Lawrence J. Powell

GRAND GORGE — Lawrence John Powell, 74, of Grand Gorge, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at Bassett Healthcare in Cobleskill following a long illness.

He was born June 17, 1927, in the Town of Hempstead, Franklin Square, to William L. Powell and Madeline Jachensky.

He married Helen Cook on April 29, 1949, at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Roxbury.

He was a United States Army veteran having served from 1945-46.

He was employed by the New York State Department of Transportation and later worked for Laborers International Union, Local 643, of Oneonta.

He had lived in Grand Gorge since 1959 and was a member of Sacred Heart-St. Philip Neri Parish.

He enjoyed gardening and operated a vegetable stand at his home.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Powell of Grand Gorge; three sons, Lawrence Alan Powell, of Grand Gorge, Ronald and Mary Powell of Grand Gorge and John and Dawnie Powell of Eatonville, Wash.; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Jerry Warner Jr., of Stamford; eight grandchildren, Patricia and Craig Chipman, Erica Powell, Aaron Powell, Danielle Powell, Justin Powell, Jerry Warner III and Brian Warner; a great-granddaughter, LeAnn Chipman; two brothers and a sister-in-law, William G. and Margaret Powell and Richard Powell, all of Grand Gorge; two sisters Margaret Cocker of Sun City West, Ariz., and Vera Prianti of Newark, Del.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at Sacred Heart Church in Stamford. The Celebrant will be the Rev. Anthony Ligato.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Contributions in memory of Lawrence Powell made be made to the Grand Gorge Rescue Squad or Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Esther P. Snel

DELHI — Esther Pearl Snel, 85, a resident at the Countryside Care Center in Delhi, passed away peacefully Friday morning Oct. 26, 2001, at her residence.

She was born April 28, 1916, in Chester, Iowa, the daughter of the late Arthur and Emma Lamphrect Hadley.

She first married Vincent Lyon on May 13, 1938, in Walton. He predeceased her on March 4, 1973.

On Sept. 4, 1976, she married Jack Snel in Rockdale. Jack passed away July 22, 1997.

Mrs. Snel had been a Delhi resident for the past eight years and was formerly of East Guilford.

Pearl was a member of the Rockdale Community Church, Rockdale.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Katherine Armstrong Bird and Robert Bird of Walton; two sons and daughters-in-law James A. and Joyce Lyon of Oxford; David C. and Gayle Lyon of Apple Valley,  Calif.; a brother and sister-in-law, Cecil and Violet Hadley, of Delhi; sister, Mabel Eelman, of Prescott, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Also surviving are four step-daughters and numerous step-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel 21 Main St., Sidney.

Burial will follow in the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Friends are invited to call Monday with her family in attendance from noon until services at 1 p.m.

Memorial gifts may be directed to the charity of one's choice.

Frances E. Baldwin

MONTROSE, Pa. — Frances Emma Baldwin, 80, formerly of Oneonta and Great Bend, Pa., died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at the Meadow View Senior Living Center in Montrose, Pa.

She was born Oct. 16, 1921, in Livingston Manor, the daughter of Philip Browne and Cala (Copper) Browne.

She was married to Harold Baldwin who died several years ago. She was a Gold Star Mother and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary of Oneonta.

She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Colleen and Bruce Ehrhard of Treadwell and Gloria and Harold Abrams of Linwood, N.C.; three sons and their wives, Patrick and Susan Baldwin of LaMarque,  Texas, Michael and Jane Baldwin of Oneonta, and Sidney and Jacqueline Baldwin of Kirkwood; 10 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also survive her.

She was predeceased by a son, Gerald L. Baldwin, who died in Vietnam on July 7, 1968.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at noon at the Elm Park Methodist Church, 401 Chestnut St., Oneonta, N.Y.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time at the church.

Burial will be in the Glenwood Cemetery in Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris, N.Y.

Leta E. Geiger

ALBANY — Leta E. Geiger (Betty Tweedie), 83, died at home on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001.

She was born and raised on a farm in Delhi and was one of six children of the late Robert and Pheba Mae Tweedie.

She studied business and home economics at the Delhi Agricultural and Technical College, now the State University College of Technology at Delhi, graduating in 1936.

She resided in Altamont for 20 years before moving to Albany in 1971.

She was employed by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance until she retired in 1983.

From 1985 until the onset of her illness in July 2000, she was employed by the Albany County Finance Department.

She had lifelong interests in gardening, cooking, nature, conservation, environmental issues and scientific advances.

She was the wife of the late David K. Geiger.

She was the mother of Barbara Leibert of Seattle, Elizabeth Geiger of Albany, and Bill (Joanna) Geiger of Lakeville, Conn. She was grandmother of Mark (Narin) Leibert, Justin Bernard and Olivia Geiger. She is also survived by several cousins, nephews and nieces.

She was predeceased by an infant son, Richard Geiger.

Leta has donated her body to the AMC Anatomical Gift Program for medical education and research.

Services will be private.

Contributions in Leta's memory can be made to the charity of donor's choice or to Community Hospice of Albany, 445 New Karner Rd., Albany, NY 12205 or to Capital District Community Gardens, 295 Eighth St., Troy, NY 12180.

Gertrude Natoli

ONEONTA — Gertrude Broe Natoli, 83, died on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in East Orange, N.J., on March 4, 1918, the daughter of Christopher and Rose Mangan Broe.

On May 1, 1943, she married Thomas J. Natoli, who died last year.

Mrs. Natoli, a graduate of the Flushing Hospital School of Nursing, was a registered nurse who worked for many years at Homer Folks Hospital and in private duty.

She was a longtime member of St. Mary's Church and the Rosary Society.

Mrs. Natoli is survived by her three children, Peggy and her husband, Thomas Duffy, of Williamsburg, Va., Eileen and her husband, Michael Crowe, of Asheville, N.C., and Thomas C. and his wife, Terri, of Alexandria, Va.; and by her 11 grandchildren, Brigid Duffy and her husband, Douglas Prevelige, of South Riding, Va., Jennifer Duffy and her fiance, Ian McIntyre, of Oneonta, Kate Duffy of Boston, Mass., Karen Crowe of Charlotte, N.C., Gretchen and Michael Crowe of Asheville, N.C., and Christopher, Ashley, Kelsea, Bethany and Carey Natoli of Alexandria, Va.

In addition, Mrs. Natoli is survived by her brothers and sisters, Gerald Broe and his wife, Ruth, of Oneonta, Thomas Broe and his wife, Delores, of Atlanta, Ga., James Broe and his wife, Joyce, of Colliersville, Mary Broe Otvos of Colliersville, Elizabeth Broe Priore and her husband, James, of Rochester, Mich., and Lorraine Broe of Colliersville.

She was also "Aunt Gert" to many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Mrs. Natoli's brother, Joseph Broe, preceded her in death.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Oneonta. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, where family will be in attendance from 3 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heart Association or to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, National Capital Area Chapter, 5845 Richmond Highway, Suite 630, Alexandria, Va. 22303.

John 'Tom' Healy

BOVINA CENTER — John Thomas "Tom" Healy, 66, of Bovina Center, passed away after an extended illness on Friday evening, Oct. 26, 2001, at his home.

The son of the late John Thomas and Anna T. (Plunkett) Healy, he was born May 15, 1935, in Flushing, and married Patricia (Haas) Schroeder on July 15, 1978.

Tom was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier Jesuit Military Academy in New York City, and also attended Hofstra University, American Institute of Banking, New York Institute of Technology and graduated from the New York City Police Academy in 1956.

A detective for seven years with the Office of Management Analysis of the Police Commissioner's Office, he retired in 1977, with 21 years of service in the NYPD. Subsequently, he was contract administrator for EDO Corp in College Point, supervisor of security for the NYC Board of Education, finally retiring from the U.S. Postal Service in 1990.

Formerly of Flushing, Tom moved to Bovina Center in 1987, where he served as town chair of the Delaware County Democratic Committee, Delaware County Shields treasurer, Delhi Rotary Club past president, Catskill Area Hospice volunteer, nd Catholic Charities dispute resolution mediator.

Tom was also parish council past president of the Church of the Most Precious Blood, South Kortright; served as parish social minister of St. Peter's Church, Delhi; lay minister of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany; and member of Joseph Lamb Council, Knights of Columbus, Plainview.

Surviving are his wife of 23 years, Patricia Healy, at home; two daughters, Maureen Healy of Plainview and Annemarie Healy of Levittown; a stepson, Kenneth Schroeder of Ware, Mass; stepdaughter, Susan Schroeder of Ft. Myers, Fla.; grandson, Dennis Michael; a sister, Dorothy (Frank) Scocca of East Meadow; a brother-in-law, James Shea of Flushing; a niece, two nephews and several cousins.

He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Catherine Shea.

Friends are invited to call today at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where the family will be in attendance from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., and a vigil service will be held at 8:30 p.m.

The funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville, where Tom was a parishioner. The Rev. John Burns, the Rev. Paul Hartt and the Rev. Judith Thistle will officiate, and final commendation and burial will follow in the Bovina Cemetery.

Memorial contributions to Catskill Area Hospice will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

James Donald Bain

NEW LISBON — James Donald Bain, 75, of New Lisbon, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at his home in New Lisbon, with his family at his side.

He was born in  Johnson City, on Sept. 23, 1926, the son of James and Prudence (Collins) Bain.

He married Venena Ward on Aug. 4, 1951, in Edmeston.

He was a lifelong area dairy farmer and enjoyed all types of cars and the great outdoors. He also enjoyed water skiing and particularly enjoyed his children and his grandchildren.

He was a former member of the Eastern Dairy Milk Producers.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Venena,of New Lisbon; his four children, Donna Bain and her special friend, Earl, of  Johnson City, Joyce Giacoma and her husband, Peter, of Weston, Fla., Nancy Burns and her husband, James, of  Johnson City, and Kenneth Bain and his wife, Kitty, of Oneonta; his grandchildren, Karen Elizabeth Bain, Peter Joseph Giacoma, Andrew James Giacoma, Jill Elizabeth Burns and Adam James Burns. He is also survived by two brothers, Thomas Bain of Port Orange, Fla., and Allen Bain of Satsuma, Fla.; four sisters, Lillian Mount of Canajoharie, Gladys  Johnson of Port Orange, Fla., Lois Bain of Garrattsville and Jean  Johnson and her husband, Robert, of Port Orange, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Donald's remains were donated to the Anatomical Gifts program of the State University of New York at Syracuse.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Morris, with the Rev. Patricia Olmstead, pastor, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in Don's memory.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Edward Swislosky

SIDNEY — Edward William Swislosky Sr., 76, of Sidney, passed away Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, at his home.

He was born in Bayside on April 10, 1925, son of the late Vincent and Pearl Shafer Swislosky.

Edward served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He married Irene McKinnon on Sept. 6, 1947, in College Point. She predeceased him on Aug. 1, 1994.

Mr. Swislosky was a master mechanic for Reynolds Metals when he retired.

He was a member of the V.F.W. Corp. R.H. Arrandale Post #7914 in Sidney.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Edward W. and Joanne Swislosky Jr., Greene, and Robert and Clair Swislosky, Sidney; a daughter and son-in-law, Irene M. and Dan Dean, Masonville; three sisters, Virginia Kercher, Blackbird, Mo., Clara Kingsley, Long Island, and Dorothy Markland, Palm Bay, Fla.; 23 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

His brother, Vincent Swislosky, predeceased him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at Sacred Heart Church, Liberty Street, Sidney, with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz officiating.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

John P. Cribbs

SIDNEY — John P. "Jack" Cribbs, 76, of Sidney, passed away Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at his home.

He was born Jan. 14, 1925, son of the late Daniel A. and Emma Klein Cribbs in Danville, Pa.

Jack served his country in the U.S. Army from 1950-1952.

He married Marian Russell on May 15, 1954, in the Sacred Heart Church in Sidney. She predeceased him on Dec. 24, 1995.

Jack was employed as a postal carrier for more than 40 years.

Mr. Cribbs was a member of the Sacred Heart Church and the Knights of Columbus Council #4937, Sidney. He was the treasurer for the Charles L. Jacobi Post #183 American Legion in Sidney.

He loved baseball and coached in the Peewee, Little League, Babe Ruth and American Legion leagues.

Mr. Cribbs was also devoted to the Boy Scouts of America; he saw many young men become Eagle Scouts. He has received the St. George and the Silver Beaver awards for his dedication.

In 1996, Jack carried the torch for the Olympic Games in Atlanta, Ga.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, John and Cindy Cribbs, San Jose,  Calif., and Robert Cribbs, Kansas City, Mo.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Kevin Ku, Overland Park,  Colo., and Anne and Robin Davis, Carthage; a brother, Thomas Cribbs, Riverside,  Calif.; two sisters and brother-in-law, Helen and Lawrence Halbert, Sidney, and Jean Eldridge,  Johnson City; seven grandchildren; brother-in-law, Perry Shelton, Trout Creek.

His son the Rev. Fr. James M. Cribbs; brother, Robert M. Cribbs; and sister, Theresa Shelton predeceased him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, at the Sacred Heart Church, Liberty Street, in Sidney with the Rev. Fr. Joseph Schuck officiating.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Boy Scouts of America or the Gilead House of Prayer.

Arrangements are under the directions of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.
