Evelyn Tepfer

STAMFORD — Mrs. Evelyn Burns Tepfer of Stamford and Pomfret, Md., but a longtime resident of Grand Gorge, died on Oct. 28, 2001, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia and Robert Mudd, after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Tepfer was born in Ferndale, Sullivan County, on Aug. 27, 1913, the sixth of seven children to William Daniel and Mary (Wilkinson) Burns.

Upon graduation from high school in Monticello, Mrs. Tepfer enrolled in the Brooklyn College of Nursing and graduated in 1934 as a registered nurse.

In 1935, she married Dr. Gustav Tepfer in Elkton, Md., and made their first home in Grahmsville.

Upon the outbreak of World War II, they were asked to relocate to Grand Gorge so there would be a doctor to serve the Grand Gorge area. Mrs. Tepfer lived in Grand Gorge for more than 30 years and became a beloved member of the community.

She was a member of the Eastern Star, member of the Grand Gorge Methodist Church and a great supporter of the Grand Gorge School and all the activities associated with it.

Upon the death of her husband, Dr. Tepfer, in 1972, she remained in Grand Gorge for a number of years but spent winters at her youngest daughter's home in Charles County, Md. She then lived briefly in Prattsville, and spent the past six years in Stamford.

Mrs. Tepfer traveled extensively after the death of her husband, visiting most of Europe, the Scandinavian countries, Canada and Alaska.

Mrs. Tepfer was an icon throughout the entire Grand Gorge and Stamford communities and much of the surrounding area. She was a true friend to all, young and old and was often sought out for her advice. She loved to shop, travel and do crossword puzzles and was one of the most active and well informed "seniors" of her age.

People marveled at the energy she had and her interest in everything from local news to international events. But her greatest pride and joy was in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Over the years, Mrs. Tepfer's courage, strength, attitude and outlook on life was a real inspiration to her family and friends alike.

Mrs. Tepfer is survived by her five children, Alice Tepfer Stephens of Stamford, Lawrence (Tim) Tepfer of Port Chester, Helen Tepfer Eckman of Severn, Md., Sylvia Tepfer Mudd of Pomfret, Md., and Dr. Stanton Tepfer of Geneva; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Bruce; and a large number of nieces and nephews.

For those who wish, memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Funeral services will take place on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Stamford Presbyterian Church in Stamford, with the Rev. Tracie Martin officiating.
